When was the last time you stopped going down your to-do list in order and actually asked: "Is this the right thing to do right now?"

If you've ever:

  • Felt like you're doing a million things but nothing is actually moving the needle
  • Realized you're spreading yourself too thin but don't know what to cut
  • Gone straight down your to-do list without any regard for your energy or what your body is primed for
  • Hit the end of the month wondering where all your time went
  • Known you need a strategy but feel too overwhelmed to figure one out

In this episode, I'm breaking down the P in POWR: Plan. This is your follicular phase — your internal spring. Days 6-13 of your cycle. And your superpower? Strategic, big-picture thinking.

Here's what I want you to know: You don't need more discipline. You don't need to do more. You need to stop doing everything and start doing what actually matters — at the time your brain is wired to do it best.

Last week during my R phase (Rest), I set an intention. I asked my soul: "What does my business need from me?" The answer was clear: I've been spreading myself too thin. My old burnout habits caught up with me.

So during my P phase this week, I took that answer and turned it into a plan. A strategic game plan that respects my body, honors my energy, and actually moves my business forward.

In this episode:

  • The exact 3-step process I use every follicular phase to plan my month
  • The 4 D's framework: Do, Delay, Delegate, Delete (and how to filter your massive to-do list through them)
  • How to match tasks to the phase your brain is primed for (spoiler: accounting does NOT belong in follicular phase)
  • My monthly planning board system (and why I never have more than 2 tasks per phase)
  • How this prevents you from falling back into burnout patterns disguised as productivity
  • Why you can't skip the R phase reflection if you want the P phase planning to actually work
  • How to apply this framework even if you're on birth control, pregnant, or breastfeeding (hint: sync with the moon)

This episode is for you if:

  • You're a solopreneur, business owner, or busy woman with a mile-long to-do list
  • You keep doing all the things but still feel behind
  • You're wired for burnout and know you need a different approach
  • You want to work smarter, not harder — but don't know where to start
  • You're ready to let your body lead the charge instead of just grinding down the list

"Plan to do the right things at the right time. When you do this, tasks get easier, your time gets freer, and life gets easier."

0:00:00 - (Carly): Foreign. Welcome to Coffee with Carly, your weekly wake up call to a happier, healthier life. I'm your host, Carly Shade and I'm here to uncover how good life can get. 0:00:51 - (Carly): Do whatever you want. So the Power Method this framework is by far one of my favorite tools as a business owner who is wired for burnout and has a tendency to overdo things. When you utilize power, you achieve more by doing less. You free up your time and mental energy for things you actually enjoy and support your creativity, all while using your cycle as a compass. In short, you find your power in your period.

0:01:23 - (Carly): So power is spelled. P, O, W R. Four letters. Just like the four phases of your menstrual cycle. And a quick reminder. The P stands for plan. Your follicular phase, internal spring, right after your bleed. The O stands for outward ovulation phase, your internal summer. The W stands for work, your luteal phase, the internal fall. And your R stands for rest, menstrual phase, internal winter. So last week I threw you all a curve ball and I started with R.

0:01:59 - (Carly): The rest and reflect phase, your menstrual phase. But I did this because I was in that phase myself. And what better way to share this framework than in real time. Plus, the first day of your bleed signifies day one of a new cycle, new beginnings. Today we're going to take it back to the top and we're going to talk about the P in power. Your follicular phase. This phase immediately follows your Bleed, typically days 6 to 13 of your cycle.

0:02:33 - (Carly): And your unique power here is planning. If you forget what kind of energy is associated with this phase, just take a look outside your window. If you live in Seattle like me, you'll see it everywhere. Right now, this is your internal spring, full of new life, brainstorming, creativity. So here's how I use this inside my business. Last week during my R phase, I set an intention. I asked myself, what does my soul want me to know about my business?

0:03:10 - (Carly): And then I waited. I rested. And I let the answer come to me. And it sure did. Because what became very clear to me late one night was that I have been spreading myself way too thin. My old burnout, productivity obsessed habits caught up with me. I was letting everyone else's definition of consistency and just push, push, push produce every week they want more, right? I just let all of that cloud my own judgment.

0:03:41 - (Carly): I've just been doing too much. On top of that, I have a ton of travel coming up. I leave for my mentor's retreat in Palm Springs. I'm going to a biohacking conference with my mom in Austin. I've got a girls trip in Cape Cod. Lynn, life is, you know, I've got a lot, and it's great. It's amazing. But on top of that, I've also been constantly thinking about my rebrand launch, creating curriculum for the second cohort of my signature group program in sync and trying to refurnish my house.

0:04:13 - (Carly): So this is what it looks like, though, to be in the upward cycle of success. Your same patterns and habits will continue to pop up. We know mine, the productivity, the hustle, the push, the do everything all the time, right? I will continue to face that pattern probably for most of my life. But each time your pattern, your habits pop up, you've moved up a notch, right? There's a greater level of separation between you and the pattern.

0:04:46 - (Carly): Just the fact that I have the awareness to recognize that this pattern is here, right? That I kind of caught myself, that means it's no longer as tied to me as it used to be. But what do I do about it? Well, now that I'm in my follicular phase, it's time to do some thinking, planning, brainstorming, right? Instead of just blindly pushing forward in my business, doing all the things all the time, I utilize a little strategy.

0:05:18 - (Carly): So here's the exact process that I just used this this past week to help address the fact that I was doing too much, right? I asked myself a question. I got the answer, and here's what I do about it. So step one, I create a master list, and I utilize the four Ds. So I wrote down everything I wanted to do in my business. Every meeting, every collaboration idea, every project, everything. And then I went down the list, and I filtered each item into one of four categories.

0:05:54 - (Carly): I call them the four Ds. Okay? One of them is do what must be done right now. The second D is delay what's a great idea but just doesn't have the time it deserves. The third D is delegate. What could I hire someone else to do or maybe automate? And then the fourth is delete what is not worth my time or won't move the needle. Realistically, with all my travel in May and June, I had to get honest about what actually deserves my attention.

0:06:28 - (Carly): So now I have filtered my master list once. Step two is to filter it again, but through the lens of my cycle. Okay, so for example, I need to catch up on accounting and implement my new system. I need to brainstorm curriculum for the new in sync cohort and I need to start my substack. All very different skills required to do those things. So brainstorming curriculum for NSync. Perfect for where I'm at right now. Follicular ovulation energy.

0:07:02 - (Carly): My brain is creative and big picture and I'm really primed for communication, accounting and posting old blogs. That's meticulous, detail oriented work. Let's save that for my luteal phase when my brain is more wired. Okay, so now I have filtered my list twice. The master list between the four Ds and the second. Now that I have my list of do's, I take that and filter it through my cycle based on those four phases.

0:07:33 - (Carly): Okay, and now step three is the monthly planning board. So I have a big whiteboard. I think I got it at like, I don't know, Ross or TJ Maxx or Home Goods or something. And I have this big whiteboard that just shows one month at a time, right? So you can use it for every single month and every follicular phase, I take time to fill it out. I write like the month at the top along with the projects that I need to do.

0:08:00 - (Carly): Right, Those ones that I just filtered my actual to DOS right from the 4ds. I put those projects at the top so that I can kind of see big picture what I'm focusing on. Then I fill in the calendar. But instead of just writing the day, the date of each day, I also write the day of my cycle next to it. So you'll see two numbers in my top corners. And then I'll kind of take a line and I'll mark which days I'm in which phase with a different color, just a simple line, you know, for each phase.

0:08:33 - (Carly): So then from there I add the appropriate tasks to the appropriate weeks. So if you were to look at my calendar right now, you would see days six through 13 highlighted in pink, which is my follicular phase color. And then you would just see brainstorm in sync curriculum written across those days. There's not five things written in every single day like old me used to do. I now see the main focus of this week, of this phase is to brainstorm my NSYNC curriculum.

0:09:09 - (Carly): Very rarely Do I have more than two tasks per phase anymore? And the result? It's pretty incredible. I have a game plan for the whole month, okay? I've utilized my creative big picture brain to see things strategically. I've taken the guesswork out of my tasks for the rest of the month, which is really important. Once I hit my luteal phase and my brain starts to shift a little bit, I'm also no longer falling prey to simply just going down my to do list in order without any regard, regard for how it contributes to my business, how it respects my body, or how it honors my energy.

0:09:50 - (Carly): And when you do this, tasks get easier, your time gets freer, life gets easier. And this doesn't just need to apply to business. If you are in my world, I already know you do a million things. I already know that you are the high achieving, high capable, amazing woman. Which also probably means that in the society that we grew up in, you probably always have a mile long to do list. And most of the time you just go straight down it.

0:10:24 - (Carly): You can take this exact framework and apply it to anything. You don't have to be your own business owner. You can apply it in your job, your family's plans, your life, and remember, for those who are on hormonal birth control, pregnant, breastfeeding, or you just don't get a true bleed anymore, you can still tap into this power by timing your cycle with the moon. Okay? So this phase is associated with the waxing moon.

0:10:53 - (Carly): Your energy is growing as it gears up for a full moon. That's the P in power we plan. We plan to do the right things at the right time. And you can see how this all starts to, to layer on, to work together. Right? I mean I set an intention during my period. I reflected, asked my body about my business and I got an answer. And then I took that answer and I brainstormed during my planning phase. So next week we will see how I utilize my ovulation phase, the O, which stands for outward.

0:11:34 - (Carly): If you are a solopreneur, a business owner or just a busy ass woman, I hope you found some gold here, okay? Because maybe you're starting to see that there's another way to do business. One where your body leads the charge. It's not just about doing nothing and canceling all my life and you know, like I think cycle syncing, people really think that it just means we do nothing. No, we use our body as the strategy.

0:12:03 - (Carly): We work smarter, not harder. So I just hope that you start to see that there is a different way to achieve, right? We can be anti hustle, we can be anti productivity at all costs without being anti achievement. I still have big dreams, I got real big plans for myself, but I'm just not going to sacrifice my body in the process. And when we learn how our body actually works again, that's how we go further, faster.

0:12:35 - (Carly): Female so if any of this landed with you, if you have a friend who needs to hear this, be sure to share it to them. Subscribe of course. And like a good cup of coffee, my friend, stay bold, stay balanced, and I will see you next week. It.
