Joe Schmid from @MajestyofReason announced that he has returned to Catholicism. As an agnostic/atheist YouTuber who left catholicism, I’ve been thinking about how people should respond when someone leaves their religious or ideological group.
In this video, I lay out my “Ten Commandments” for responding to someone whose beliefs have changed. Drawing from my own experience leaving Catholicism and coming out, I talk about listening before arguing, taking people’s stated reasons seriously, respecting their autonomy, avoiding tribal “wins” and “losses,” and remembering that a person is always more important than the culture war surrounding them.
I’ll have plenty to say about Joe’s arguments for Catholicism in future videos. But before we debate his reasons, I think atheists, Catholics, and everyone else should remember how to treat the person making the decision.
