All right , let's keep rolling with the 10 elements of a godly man , because that's what we've been studying all week this week and we're going to be keeping it going next week . But so far we've looked at element one a godly man has surrendered his life to Christ . Element two a godly man is selfless . And element three a godly man strives for holiness . Element four of a godly man is this a godly man is repentant . A godly man is repentant . A godly man is repentant . Now let me just go and tell you what repentance is not okay . Repentance is not . I'm really , really , really , really sorry , and I mean it this time , because that's what people think . People think that repentance is like saying sorry , but like extra fervently , with a lot more words and a lot more gusto . But that's not what it is . Repentance is a sincere that's important a sincere 180 turn away from our sinful desires and actions and towards God . So we're going this direction and we're literally turning 180 degrees and going the opposite direction now . And repentance has to include heart change , it has to include mindset change
, it has to include behavioral change , it has to include mindset change , it has to include behavioral change and it has to include a real demonstration of remorse and , again , actions contrary to previous actions . If you don't have those things , you're not really repentant . And what normally gets in the way of us repenting of our sins and sinful behaviors ? Us , we do . We get in the way . We get in the way because we think we're special ,
we think we're unique , we think there's no one else that's like us , we think that our sins have a viable excuse attached to them . Well , if you only knew what they did to me first , you know . Well , if God didn't want me to be gay , then why do I have homosexual desires ? Well , if you drink too , if you had to deal with my wife again , on and on and on . We love to just give these excuses as to why we don't have to do the things that God is telling us to do through his scripture . But here's the reality we can never successfully repent of our sins and sinful behaviors if we don't acknowledge them first . Because , duh , and to help me drive home that point today , I'm going to bring in the Apostle Paul . So the Apostle Paul is a gangster . Can we just say that he wrote a gospel , which is awesome . Also , emperor Domitian tried to kill him by boiling him alive in a vat of oil and he came out completely unscathed . So he's like all right , just put him on the Isle of Patmos , so I don't have to deal with him anymore . And that's where he wrote the book of Revelation .
Speaker 2And he also gave us a tremendous letter , which is 1 John . So 1 John has a lot of stuff in it , a lot of great stuff , but it mainly seems to be concerned with false teaching concerning Jesus . That's kind of an overall theme of that letter , 1 John . So I want to read 1 John 1 , verses 8 through 10 . To read 1 John 1 , verses 8 through 10 .
Speaker 2If we say we have no sin , we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us . If we confess our sins , he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness . If we say we have not sinned , we make him a liar and his word is not in us . So , guys , that removes all excuses . Okay , I feel like it's it's necessary to repeat this again .
Speaker 21 John 1 , 8 through 10 . If we say we have not sinned , we make him a liar and his word is not in us Again , enough with the excuses , guys . Hey , here's all the reasons why I can't repent . Here's all the reasons why I can't change . At what point did you think that was currency , fellows ? At what point did you think that that was a good idea to lean on your excuses ? Right , that hasn't worked since you were a kid , okay , but John in this passage is giving us a three-step process really to being a godly repenter .
Speaker 2Number one admit we have sin . Number two confess those sins . Number three study the Word of God . It's right there in the passage If we don't admit that we have sin , it's impossible for us to repent . So that's step one . Step two confess those sins . Okay , now I've acknowledged that I'm a sinner . Here's my specific sins , here's my specific sinful behaviors . Now I need to confess those things , right , confess those to your brothers . And then , step three study the word of God .
Speaker 2Okay , because if you say that you've not sinned again at the very end of verse 10 , and his word is not in us , how do we know that we're a sinner ? How do we know that we need a savior . How do we know that we can't possibly repay the sin debt we owe to a holy and just God ? You study the word of God . You don't get your theology from TikTok or for some random dork pastor on YouTube or something like that . We study the word of God and we treat it as if it is actually the word of God . So element four of a godly man a godly man is repentant . You guys should chew on that today . If you've got some areas of your life that you need to repent on , you need to repent of right now is that time . If you're waiting for a sign , this is it .
