Seven Sayings of Christ Series Introduction

Speaker 2

All right , men , welcome back to the Daily Blade this week as we prepare for Easter , which is coming up in a couple of weeks . What we're going to do is we're going to look at the seven sayings of Christ on the cross . We're going to do them in order . We're going to cover seven sayings in five days , so there'll be a couple of days that we squeeze them together . We'll start in Luke 23 , beginning of verse

Jesus's First Words on the Cross

Speaker 2

32 . The Bible says and two others others , who were criminals , were led away to be put to death with him . And when they came to the place that is called the skull , there they crucified him and the criminals , one on his right and one on his left , and Jesus said , father , forgive them , for they know not what they do , and they cast lots to divide his garments .

Speaker 2

Now , if you've been around church for any length of time at all , you have heard that Jesus died on the cross for you so many times you can't even count . You've heard that Jesus was crucified for our sin and you know , oftentimes we just run right past these verses

The Reality of Crucifixion Explained

Speaker 2

. And I just want to remind you that the Romans had perfected crucifixion . The crucifixion was the most excruciating way that one could die . In fact , the word excruciating comes from the root word crucifixion , which means to suffer , to face extraordinary pain . The nails would go through the hands and the feet of the criminal , that they would be lifted up onto a cross , a cross beam that they carried to their place of death would then be nailed to a post that would be put in the ground , and that most people died , not from blood loss , though some did , but most people died by what is called asphyxiation . That you would have to push up on your nail pierced feet in order to draw breath and to say words . It was to dissuade anybody from ever getting out of line with the Romans . And God , the Son , the second person of the Trinity , was crucified at the place of the skull , and the first thing that he says when he pushes up on his nail pierced feet is this Father , forgive them , for they know not what they do .

The True Purpose of Jesus's Coming

Speaker 2

I want to remind you of why Jesus came . Jesus did not come to this earth to primarily be a good moral teacher . He didn't come to tell us stories . He didn't come to tell us how to treat people . He did not come to primarily teach us stories so that we would know about our Jewish history better or how to treat one another better .

Speaker 2

That the reason that Jesus came , the reason that he lived the perfect life , the reason that he fulfilled every promise and prophecy of the old covenant . The reason , every single time the enemy tempted him with every temptation known to man , and he rejected that and said yes to the will of God . Temptation known to man , and he rejected that and said yes to the will of God . The reason that Jesus was put on trial and did not call down a band of angels to free him . The reason that he submitted himself to Pontius Pilate . The reason that he was beaten and that a crown of thorns was pressed down on his head . The reason that the blood dripped out of his hand and out of his feet and out of his side . The reason that Jesus was nailed to this cross was for this reason , so that he could rightly say Father , forgive them .

Speaker 2

The reason that Jesus came was to pay our sin debt that you and I owed , our sin debt that you and I owed that when Jesus Christ died on the cross , he was the substitutionary atoning sacrifice for you and me . Atone means to make one with at one with . It also means to make payment for . So when Jesus Christ died on the cross , he did not simply die for you , he died instead of you . That when you and I sin against an almighty , everlasting , holy and just God , then we should incur an eternal punishment . And so Jesus takes our place and God made him , who was without sin , to be sin for us . That we would be made the righteousness of God .

Speaker 2

That the reason that Jesus came was to seek and to save the lost . The reason that Jesus came was to give his life as a ransom for many . The reason that Jesus died on the cross is so that we didn't have to . And anyone who would believe that when Jesus died on the cross , that it counted for you , then you can receive the forgiveness that Christ purchased for you at the cross . Let me ask you do you believe it ? The one thing I want you to know is that Christ died to forgive you of your sin . Would you please receive that forgiveness right now ?
