A net splashes into the sea, drags up everything in its path, and then comes the part nobody likes to talk about: the sorting. We take Jesus’ parable of the dragnet from Matthew 13 and slow it down until its meaning is impossible to dodge. Judgment Day is not a spooky religious rumor. It is a promised, final moment when God separates the righteous from the evil, and every one of us ends up in one of those categories.

From there, we get painfully practical. We talk about death, accountability, and why God’s justice means sin must be paid for. Then we put the fork in the road on the table: either you self-atone and carry the cost yourself, or you trust the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, the One who pays on your behalf. We unpack why Jesus doesn’t soften his language about hell, and why that makes grace even more stunning.

We also talk about common grace and the surprising way it reframes your life today. If you reject Jesus, this may be as close to heaven as you ever get. If you belong to Jesus, this is as close to hell as you will ever be. Finally, we land on the words from the cross that change the entire story: “It is finished,” paid in full, and what that means for your salvation, your righteousness, and your next step.

Welcome And Sharpen Up

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the Daily Blade. The word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit, the primary spiritual weapon in the Christian's armor against the forces of evil. Your hosts are Joby Martin and Kyle Thompson, and they stand ready to equip men for the fight. Let's sharpen up.

The Net Parable Explained

SPEAKER_01

All right, last parable that we're going to study, day five. This is very similar to the first one, but it's a little bit different. It says this, beginning in verse 47. He says, again, the kingdom of heaven, this is what Jesus taught all throughout Matthew. Matthew chapter 4, the Bible says, And Jesus from that day went on preaching, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And he says, again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. And when it was full, the men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers, but threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of

Judgment Day And The Sorting

teeth. A part of what Jesus is saying is this Judgment Day is coming. That in the first century, when they fished, they did not cast a net like we do with a cast net. They used what we would call a dragnet. The two boats would go out a couple hundred yards with weights on the net, they would drop the bottom to the bottom of the Sea of Galilee, they would hold on to the top, they would row the boats forward, and they would just catch every single thing that was in the way of the net.

Two Ways Sin Gets Paid

SPEAKER_01

The reality is this you will stand in judgment before God. You're not getting away from this. Unless Jesus returns before you die, every single one of us will die. I've checked the statistics, and the death rate in America hovers right around 100%. And because God is just, all sin must be paid for. For him to look overlook sin, that would make him an unjust judge. But because God is full of grace, he made the payment on our behalf. And there are two one of two ways that your sin can be paid for. Either you can pay for it yourself, you can self-atone. And the way that you pay for a sin against an everlasting God is with an everlasting punishment. And I'm not here to try to feather Jesus' hair. He does not need a makeover. He makes it very clear that you'll be thrown into the fiery furnace, and in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. That God is the source of all things good and lovely and just and pure, and in hell you get none of that. So if you're not a Christian, I've got some terrifying news. This is as close to heaven as you'll ever get. Because of God's common grace, you get things to enjoy, like a job, like a family to love, like air to breathe, like vacations to go on. But this is it. This is as close as you'll ever get. If you are a Christian, I've got some wonderful news. This is as close to hell as we'll ever be. Because one day when we go to be in heaven with the Lord forever and ever and see him face to face, there'll be no more pain, there'll be no more tears. Nobody walks with a swagger or a lint. But every single one of us one day will stand before the Lord, and we've got one of two options on how to pay for sin.

Paid In Full Through Jesus

SPEAKER_01

Self-atone, that means you pay for it for all of eternity, being cast into hell. Or you could take the substitutionary atonement. Atonement in the Bible simply means to pay for. And Jesus has come to pay for your sin on the cross. And whoever believes that when he died on the cross somehow that counted for me, you receive the right to become a child of God. This is love. Not that we first loved him, but he first loved us and sent his son as the propitiation for our sin, the payment that satisfies the wrath of God, the justice of God. The last thing Jesus said on the cross before he turns his life over to God, he says this. He says, To telestai, it is finished, literally paid in full. And all of us will either be that justified one or that one that is sent to hell. Now, when it's fish, it's good and bad. When it's people, it's evil and righteous. And I know some of you are like, Well, I'm not evil, as compared to who. Jesus says, Be perfect as my Father is perfect. He says, then the greatest commandment in the whole Bible is the Lord our God, the Lord is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. So has there ever been a time in your life where you have not loved him with all? All of your heart, all of your mind, all of your soul, all of your strength. You see, you know what you call that? We call that evil. And then he says, But the righteous will enter the kingdom of heaven. And you may say, Well, I'm not righteous. Well, I've got really good news. Righteousness does not mean that you always get it right. Righteousness means that you have a right standing with God. The book of Romans will say, by works of the law, no one will be justified in his sight. But it is by faith in Jesus that we are justified, that we are made righteous. 2 Corinthians 5 21 says that God made him who is without sin, that's Jesus, to be sin on the cross, so that whoever believes will be made the righteousness of

The Decision You Cannot Avoid

SPEAKER_01

God. So let me ask you, when you stand before the Lord, which one will you be? Will you be evil because you have rejected Jesus and to not make a decision is to make a decision. That you say, Jesus, forget you, I don't need you. And he will turn you over to your own will, and you will spend an eternity away from him. Or have you bent your knee to Jesus and surrendered your life to him and believed on him for your salvation? You see, the Bible says in the book of Philippians, chapter 2, that one day when Jesus returns, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. My question for you is on the day of judgment, when you confess him as Lord, will you confess him the Lord of your salvation or the Lord of your damnation? Because he will be glorified either by his justice or through his grace towards you. Would you please surrender your life to him and receive that grace?

SPEAKER_00

Amen.
