Four settlements secured in a single week sounds like a sudden surge until you look at what gets quietly destroyed first. We sit down with Colonel A.C. Oguntoye for a sector-by-sector military briefing that treats the map as the last step of a longer process: attrition warfare aimed at breaking the enemy’s ability to shoot, see, communicate, and resupply.

We walk through reported results across Sumy, Kharkov, and Donetsk, then dig into the mechanics behind them: ammunition depots wiped out, electronic warfare stations neutralized, artillery and armored vehicles lost, and drones removed from the sky. The conversation keeps returning to a modern battlefield truth: when reconnaissance thins and communications become insecure, counterbattery fire slows, units burn through supplies, and even determined defenders struggle to hold a line.

We also zoom out to the air campaign and strategic targeting, including strikes on defense industry, fuel and power infrastructure, transport networks, USV workshops, and drone production sites. The goal, as framed here, is not just immediate damage but long-term constraint, making it harder to generate combat power tomorrow. We close by synthesizing the “sequence” of attrition and why it can produce abrupt-looking territorial gains once a threshold is crossed.

Frontline Updates, where we delve deep into military strategies and updates from conflict zones. Today, we're discussing the progress of the ongoing special military operation as of today. I'm your host, Sharifa Mohammed MGT.

SPEAKER_00

I'm Colonel A. C. Oguntoye, an infantry officer.

SPEAKER_01

The past week has demonstrated sustained Russian offensive momentum across all sectors, with three settlements secured: Potapovka in Sumi, Peshinoy, and Shivyakovka, Kharkov, and Nikiforovka in Donetsk, liberated. Russian forces executed one massive and five group strike against the Ukrainian defense industry, fuel power infrastructure, transport networks, and drone and USV production facilities. Cumulative Ukrainian losses exceed 8,880 personnel with significant attrition of artillery, electronic warfare, and logistics infrastructure. Air defense claims 3,138 UAVs destroyed.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to Frontline Updates, the podcast that brings you in-depth insights into military operations from those leading them on the ground. Today, we're joined by Colonel A.C. Oguntoye, an infantry officer monitoring critical missions on the progress of the special military operation as of today. Colonel Oguntoye, thank you for being with us.

Why Momentum Suddenly Accelerated

SPEAKER_00

Thank you. It's good to be here.

SPEAKER_02

Colonel, let's start with the big picture. Four settlements in one week across three regions. What does this tell us about Russian operational momentum?

SPEAKER_01

This is a significant acceleration. For months, territorial gains were measured in individual villages, sometimes weeks apart. This week, Russian forces took four settlements across three regions Sumy, Kharkov, and Donetsk.

SPEAKER_02

What changed?

SPEAKER_01

Not the quality of Ukrainian soldiers. They remain determined. What changed is the cumulative effect of the attrition we've been tracking. Week after week, Russian forces have been destroying Ukrainian artillery, electronic warfare stations, ammunition depots, and drones. Week after week, Ukrainian capability has been degrading. This week, that degradation reached a threshold. Ukrainian artillery had fewer shells. Their reconnaissance had fewer drones. Their communications were less secure. Their counterbattery radar was degraded. So when Russian forces advanced, the defenses that should have stopped them weren't there. Four settlements in one week is not a breakthrough. It is the result of systematic preparation.

SPEAKER_02

Let's move to the northern sector, where Russian forces secured three settlements: Podopovka in Sumi, Peshinoy, and Shevyakovka in Kharkov. The weekly numbers show 1,620 Ukrainian losses, 49 depots destroyed, and seven electronic warfare stations neutralized. What made these gains possible?

Western And Southern Lines Give Way

SPEAKER_01

Three settlements in one sector in one week is extraordinary. The northern sector has been relatively quiet in terms of territorial gains. This week that changed. Look at the numbers that made it possible. 49 depots were destroyed in this sector alone in one week. That means Ukrainian units around Potapovka, Peshinoy, and Shivyakovka were running short of ammunition, fuel, and supplies. Seven electronic warfare stations neutralized means their communications were degraded, their drone defense compromised. The unit mix tells the story. Four mechanized brigades, motorized infantry, assault, airmobile, air assault, territorial defense, and National Guard. That's everything Ukraine has thrown into one sector. And despite all that combat power, three settlements fell. They're hard to kill and harder to replace. Losing five in one sector in one week means Ukrainian armored capability there has been severely degraded. 31 armored fighting vehicles. That's not just attrition, that's the destruction of mechanized combat power. These are the vehicles that move infantry, provide fire support, and enable maneuver. 17 ammunition depots means the units that survived are running short. Three electronic warfare stations means their ability to jam Russian drones and protect their communications is compromised. The Western sector had been relatively quiet. This week, Russian forces identified a weakened sector and exploited it.

SPEAKER_02

The southern sector liberated Nikifarovka and Donetsk. The numbers show 1,210 Ukrainian losses, 21 armored fighting vehicles, 22 artillery guns, 31 depots, and 11 electronic warfare stations. Why was this sector able to produce a territorial gain?

SPEAKER_01

The southern sector demonstrates the compounding effect of sustained pressure. Look at the numbers. 22 artillery guns destroyed means Ukrainian fire support degraded. 31 depots means logistics crippled. 11 electronic warfare stations means communications disrupted. When you combine all of that, Ukrainian defenses don't just weaken, they collapse in sections. That's why Nikiforovka fell. The unit list includes four mechanized brigades, motorized infantry, assault, mountain assault, air mobile, and a marine brigade. These are some of Ukraine's best units, and they lost Nikiforovka anyway.

SPEAKER_02

The center sector recorded the highest weekly casualties: 2,395 Ukrainian personnel lost, 63 armored fighting vehicles, 21 artillery guns, 10 electronic warfare stations. What made this sector so intense?

SPEAKER_01

The center sector has been the hottest for weeks, and this week it produced the highest casualties by a significant margin. 2,395 personnel lost in one week is catastrophic. That's a brigade's worth of soldiers. Gone. 63 armored fighting vehicles means Ukraine's mechanized capability in this sector is being systematically dismantled. The unit list tells the story. Three mechanized airmobile, infantry, air assault, two assault regiments, marine territorial defense, two National Guard brigades. That's everything Ukraine has. Professional units, elite units, internal security forces, all being fed into the same meat grinder. And despite all that, Russian forces took more advantageous positions. The attrition in the center sector has reached the point where Ukraine can't hold ground even when committing every available unit.

SPEAKER_02

The eastern sector advanced into the depths of enemy defense with 2,000 CT5 Ukrainian losses. The unit list includes two air assault brigades, an assault brigade, three assault regiments, a marine brigade, and a National Guard Brigade. What does that tell you?

SPEAKER_01

Three assault regiments and two air assault brigades in one sector is significant. Assault units are Ukraine's offensive punch. They're supposed to be used for breakthroughs, counterattacks, and high-tempo operations. Using them to hold defensive positions means Ukraine has run out of dedicated defensive units. 2,065 losses from these units means Ukraine's best offensive troops are being attrited in a defensive role they weren't designed for. That's not sustainable. 16 armored fighting vehicles destroyed, 12 artillery guns, five depots. The pattern continues. But the real story is the misuse of offensive units in a defensive role. That's a sign of desperation.

SPEAKER_02

The DNA sector shows the lowest personnel losses, 310, but the highest electronic warfare attrition, 20 EW stations neutralized. Why the focus on EW in this sector?

Air Campaign Strikes Industry And Drones

SPEAKER_01

20 electronic warfare stations in one week is the highest we've seen. By targeting EW stations here, Russia is disrupting Ukraine's ability to see and communicate across the entire southern theater. Each station destroyed means Ukrainian units somewhere lose jamming protection, communication security, and drone defense. 310 casualties is low because this is a deep strike sector, not heavy ground combat. But the effects are felt everywhere else. When you degrade EW in the rear, the front loses coordination, protection, and awareness.

SPEAKER_02

Now let's address the operational tactical aviation and air defense summary. One massive and five group strikes this week against the defense industry, fuel power facilities, transport infrastructure, USV workshops, and drone production sites. Air defense claims 3,138 UAVs destroyed, averaging 448 daily, plus 47 guided bombs, three High Mars projectiles, four Neptune missiles intercepted. What does this tell us about the air campaign's role?

SPEAKER_01

This week's air campaign was about attacking the sources of Ukrainian military power, not just the symptoms. The one massive and five group strikes targeted defense industry, where weapons are made, fuel power facilities, where energy for war comes from. Transport infrastructure, how reinforcements and supplies move. US V workshops, where maritime drones are built. Drone production sites, where Ukraine's most valuable reconnaissance and strike assets are built. This is strategic targeting. It's not about killing soldiers today, it's about making sure Ukraine can't produce weapons, fuel, drones, or unmanned surface vehicles tomorrow. 3,138 drones destroyed continues the pattern of blinding Ukrainian reconnaissance. 47 guided bombs intercepted means Russian air defense protected ground forces. Three HIMARS projectiles intercepted means fewer precision strikes on Russian targets. Four Neptune missiles intercepted means Ukraine's domestically produced strike capability is being degraded.

SPEAKER_02

Colonel, we've covered every sector and the aviation campaign. Synthesize this week's operations for us. What is the cumulative effect of March 21st to the 27th on the Ukrainian Armed Forces?

Closing And How To Follow

SPEAKER_01

This week proves the thesis we've been tracking for weeks. Attrition warfare works, and it works in a predictable sequence. First, you attack the sources, the defense industry, fuel power, transport, drone production, and USV workshops. That's the deep battle. You reduce Ukraine's ability to generate new capability. Second, you attack the systems that enable defense, electronic warfare stations, counter battery radars. You blind the artillery, deafen the command. Third, you attack the logistics, ammunition depots, fuel depots, and materiel dumps. You starve the front. Fourth, you attack the eyes, drones. You make the defenders blind. Fifth, you advance. This week, that sequence produced four settlements. Not because Ukrainian soldiers suddenly became less brave, but because the systems that were supposed to protect them were systematically dismantled. 8,880 Ukrainian personnel lost, 121 depots destroyed.
