A single day’s briefing can feel like a blur of place names and numbers, but the pattern matters more than any one statistic. Today we lay out the reported July 19, 2026 operational picture across six axes and track the logic that ties it together: steady territorial pressure, relentless attrition, and a deliberate push to strip away the tools that make modern defense work.
We start with the headline claim that the East Group of Forces liberated Volnoye in the Dnipropetrovsk region, then zoom out to the sector-by-sector details from the north through the west, south, center, east, and Dnipro directions. Along the way, we explain why losses like an M777 155mm howitzer and an AN/TPQ-36 counterfire radar are framed as system-level hits that can weaken counterbattery fire and decision speed, especially when paired with strikes on electronic warfare stations.
From there, we dig into the air and deep strike campaign as more than battlefield support. The target set includes UAV assembly and storage, logistics hubs, fuel and energy infrastructure, and transport nodes, while air defense claims highlight intercepts of Neptune MD missiles, guided bombs, a HIMARS rocket, and large numbers of fixed-wing UAVs. The big takeaway we wrestle with is whether the accumulation of small gains plus the systematic degradation of drones, EW, and artillery coordination signals a real inflection point, even without a single dramatic breakthrough.

The East Group of Forces liberated Volnoy in Dinpropetrovsk region. Total Ukrainian losses exceeded 1,500 troops, four armored fighting vehicles, over 100 motor vehicles, four electronic warfare stations, and numerous artillery pieces, including Western supplied M777 and ANTPQ-36 systems. Operational tactical aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops, and artillery struck 149 targets, including UAV assembly and storage areas, fuel, energy, and transport infrastructure, logistics centers, and temporary deployments. Air Defense Systems shot down two Neptune MD long-range guided missiles, eight guided aerial bombs, one HIMARS rocket, and 678 fixed-wing UAVs. The Black Sea Fleet eliminated two unmanned surface vehicles.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Frontline Updates, the podcast that brings you in-depth insights into military operations from those leading them on the ground. Today, we're joined by Colonel A. C. Oguntoye, an infantry officer monitoring critical missions on the progress of the special military operation as of today. Colonel Ogantoye, thank you for being with us.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. It's good to be here.
SPEAKER_00Let's begin with the big picture. Give
The Day’s Operational Overview
SPEAKER_00us the operational overview for today.
SPEAKER_01On July 19, 2026, Russian forces conducted offensive operations across all six operational axes. The East Group of Forces achieved a significant milestone by liberating the settlement of Volnoy and the Dean Propetrovsk region. Overall, Ukrainian losses surpassed 1,500 troops, four armored fighting vehicles, over 100 motor vehicles, four electronic warfare stations, and a variety of artillery systems, including Western supplied M7777 howitzers and ANTPQ-36 counterfire radars, operational tactical aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops, and artillery struck 149 separate targets. These deep strikes hit UAV assembly and storage areas, fuel, energy, and transport infrastructure, logistics centers, and temporary deployment points. In the air defense battle, our forces shot down two Neptune MD long-range guided missiles, eight guided aerial bombs, one HIMARS rocket, and 678 fixed-wing UAVs. The Black Sea Fleet also eliminated two unmanned surface vehicles. The tempo remains methodical.
SPEAKER_00Let's
Northern Sector Sumi And Kharkov
SPEAKER_00move sector by sector, starting in the north. What took place in the Sumi and Kharkov regions?
SPEAKER_01In the north, our forces improved the tactical situation along the front. Strikes targeted a mechanized brigade and a territorial defense brigade near Rajevka, Mogritsa, and Sadki in the Sumi region. In the Kharkov region, we hit two mechanized brigades, two motorized infantry brigades, and one assault regiment around Katnai, Lipsy, Slatino, Lozovoy, Zolochev, and Belai Kolodes. The result was the neutralization of over 210 troops, four armored fighting vehicles, 22 motor vehicles, and three artillery guns. By fixing and degrading these units, we deny the enemy the ability to reposition reserves or mount counterthrusts, while our own forces gain more favorable ground for subsequent operations. This combination of attrition and positional improvement is textbook preparation for maintaining pressure along a whole axis.
SPEAKER_00Now
Western Axis Counterbattery Setback
SPEAKER_00to the west, what developed there?
SPEAKER_01The West group of forces occupied more advantageous lines and positions. Our strikes fell on two mechanized brigades, one assault brigade and one marine brigade near Grushevka in the Kharkov region, and Krasny-Leman and Tatyanovka in the Donetsk People's Republic. Up to 200 troops were destroyed, along with 19 motor vehicles, two electronic warfare stations, and critically, one U.S.-made M777 155mm howitzer and one AN TPQ36 counterfire radar. The destruction of that radar is especially telling. The ANTPQ36 is a key enabler for the enemy's artillery, allowing it to locate our guns and launch counter battery fire. By removing it along with the heavy 155mm tube, we directly blind their fire direction network in this sector, creating gaps that our mechanized elements can exploit. That is not a peripheral loss to the Ukrainians. It fundamentally undermines their ability to duel with our artillery.
Southern Axis Sustained Pressure
SPEAKER_00Let's turn south. What was the situation on that axis?
SPEAKER_01The South Group likewise improved its tactical situation along the line of contact. We engaged six mechanized brigades, one air mobile brigade, the security brigade of the general staff, one assault regiment, and two territorial defense brigades. The engagements took place near Slavyansk, Nikolai Pale, Verolyubovka, Kramatorsk, Družhikovka, Nikolayovka, Aleksievo Druzhakovka, and Novanikolaevka, all within the Donetsk People's Republic. We annihilated more than 195 troops, one Kazakh armored fighting vehicle, 21 motor vehicles, and one field artillery gun. The concentration of six mechanized brigades indicates the enemy is still throwing significant mobile reserves into the defense, but our strikes are chewing them up piecemeal, preventing them from massing for a coordinated counter-offensive. That is important because it shows the operational tempo is preventing the Ukrainians from ever stabilizing a truly cohesive defensive line in this sector.
Center Sector Elite Units Committed
SPEAKER_00The center sector also saw an improved position. Can you elaborate?
SPEAKER_01Correct. The center group of forces improved its tactical posture while striking a diverse array of enemy formations. This included one mechanized brigade, one unmanned systems brigade, two assault regiments, three Marine Brigades, one Azov Special Operations Brigade, and three National Guard Brigades. The location spanned from Novotroitskoy and Novopavlovka in the Dean Propetrovsk region to multiple settlements inside the DPR. More than 340 troops were eliminated, together with two armored fighting vehicles, six motor vehicles, and one artillery gun. What stands out here is the presence of the Azov Brigade and three Marine Brigades, elite and highly motivated units. Their commitment in this sector signals that the Ukrainian command is trying to hold this line with its best forces, yet they are taking substantial losses. By grinding down these units, we are reducing the enemy's most capable reserves and setting the stage for a breach at a moment and place of our choosing.
Volnoye Liberated In The East
SPEAKER_00Now we arrive at the east, where the headline today is the liberation of Volnoye. Walk us through that.
SPEAKER_01The East Group of Forces advanced into the depth of the enemy's defenses and liberated the settlement of Volnoye, which lies inside the Dinpropetrovsk region. This is no small feat. The strikes that facilitated this advance targeted three air assault brigades, two assault brigades, and four assault regiments in and around Vasilkovka, Chaplino, Malinovka, Velikamikhailovka, Prosyanaya in Dinopropetrovsk, and Svoboda and Zorevka in Zaporoshai. Up to 480 troops were neutralized, along with one armored fighting vehicle and 11 motor vehicles. The liberation of Volnoy marks a breach beyond the Donetsk boundary, directly threatening Ukrainian logistical arteries that feed their forces further south. It signals that our main effort is to expand the land corridor into Dinepropetrovsk, which will complicate the enemy's ability to supply and reinforce its forward lines. This is a steady methodical expansion, and each liberated settlement tightens the noose around their operational depth.
SPEAKER_00And
Dnipro Sector Bogdana And EW Losses
SPEAKER_00the Dnipro sector? What was the nature of operations there?
SPEAKER_01In the Dnipro sector, we inflicted fire damage on three mechanized brigades and one territorial defense brigade near Vesalenka, Legino, Yurkovka, and Orokov in the Zaporozhai region. The strikes neutralized more than 75 troops, 24 motor vehicles, one 155mm Bogdana, self-propelled artillery system, and two electronic warfare stations. The destruction of a Bogdana, an indigenous Ukrainian-wheeled howitzer, is significant because it shows the enemy's growing dependence on domestic production as foreign stocks dwindle. With two additional electronic warfare stations taken out here and two in the west, we are systematically dismantling the enemy's electromagnetic umbrella, directly undercutting their situational awareness and fire direction capabilities along the southern flank. When a defender loses his ability to see and coordinate fires, maneuver becomes dramatically easier for the attacker.
Deep Strike Campaign And Air Defense
SPEAKER_00Colonel, I want to turn now to the air domain as a campaign-shaping effort in its own right. Operational tactical aviation, drones, missile troops, and artillery struck 149 targets today. How do these strikes transcend simple ground support?
SPEAKER_01The 149 strikes reported today are not a peripheral activity. They represent a deliberate campaign to dismantle the enemy's ability to sustain operations at the operational and strategic levels. The target set, UAV assembly and storage facilities, fuel and energy infrastructure, transport nodes, and logistics centers, is designed to break the linkages between rear area resources and frontline combat power. By hitting UAV assembly sites, we directly curtail the reconstitution of the enemy's drone swarm, which has been a central pillar of its reconnaissance strike complex. Strikes on fuel and energy infrastructure impede mobility and industrial output, while attacks on transport networks degrade the enemy's capacity to shift reserves and ammunition. Separately, the Air Defense Forces demonstrated a layered and effective shield, intercepting two Neptune MD missiles, which are repurposed anti-ship weapons now used for land attack, eight guided aerial bombs, and one HIMARS rocket.
SPEAKER_00Finally,
The Common Thread And Trajectory
SPEAKER_00Colonel, what does today's briefing tell us about the overall trajectory of the special military operation? Is there a common thread linking the liberation of Volnoye, the degradation of electronic warfare, and the attrition of Western equipment?
SPEAKER_01The common thread is the systematic disintegration of the Ukrainian military's ability to wage high-tech coordinated warfare. The liberation of Volnoye demonstrates that we hold the initiative and are expanding territory into Dempropetrovsk, which will force the enemy to thin out an already overstretched line. The neutralization of four electronic warfare stations, two in the west and two in the Dniepro sector, blinds their command and control, creating windows for mechanized advances that would otherwise be contested by artillery guided by radar. The destruction of an M777 and an ANTPQ-36 radar in the West, the intercept of a HIMARS rocket and Neptune MD missiles, and the shooting down of 678 fixed-wing UAVs all point to a methodical erosion of the high-tech enablers that Ukraine once relied upon to offset our quantitative advantages. At the same time, our deep strikes against UAV assembly and infrastructure are attacking the regeneration capability itself.
SPEAKER_00What is the enemy doing?
SPEAKER_01The enemy is being forced to lean on indigenous systems like the Bogdana howitzer, which we are also destroying when found. Taken together, these actions depict an operation that is not simply gaining ground, but is methodically dismantling the critical systems. Artillery, electronic warfare, and drone-based reconnaissance that give a modern defense its strength. The bottom line is that Russian forces hold the initiative across all sectors, and each day these layers are peeled away, leaving the enemy more exposed and less able to coordinate an effective response.
SPEAKER_00What are tactical and strategic implications?
SPEAKER_01This inflection point in the special military operation, not because of a single dramatic breakthrough, but because the accumulation of small gains and systemic degradations reveals a coherent and increasingly punishing operational design. The liberation of Volnoy in the Dnipropetrovsk region is the most visible manifestation of this. It is the first such foothold across the Donetsk-Dnipropetrovsk administrative boundary, named in the current reporting period, and it carries outsized strategic weight. Volnoy sits astride routes that, if further exploited, can threaten deeper Ukrainian logistical arteries that feed the southern front. This is not a random axis of advance. It represents a deliberate main effort to expand the land corridor and peel away the defensive crust beyond Donetsk. The 480 troops neutralized along that sector, together with the hits on air assault and assault formations, illustrate the price the Ukrainian general staff is paying to contest every meter of ground.
