How to Build Focus in a Distracted World | Grace Najean

Anthony Craiker | Fulfilling Work, Meaningful Life Episode 34

Feeling stuck in survival mode and craving real purpose? In this episode, Anthony Craiker talks with Grace Najean—transformational leadership strategist and creator of the SoulFluence® Method—about moving from stress and distraction to clarity and flow. Her approach is shaped by Dr. Joe Dispenza’s meditation work and eight years of coaching with Tony Robbins, blending science-backed mindset practices with embodied leadership. Grace breaks down her Body–Mind–Soul framework into everyday practice: align your energy and body, create mind–heart coherence, and tap conscious focus so you can lead yourself first and lead others better. You’ll learn simple tools to cut anxiety and regain attention—box breathing, a quick count-down meditation, personal SWOT and Ikigai exercises, and practical phone-use rules that protect your focus. Grace also shares why tech should serve your humanity (not the other way around) and how to rebuild self-awareness even when life is busy. If you’ve been busy yet unfulfilled, this conversation is your invitation to slow down, listen to your inner voice, and create a life that actually fits.

Interview with Grace Najean

Anthony: [00:00:00] Welcome everybody, to another episode of Fulfilling Work Meaningful Life. I'm your host, Anthony Craiker, and I am joined today by Grace Najean transformational leadership strategist and creator of the Soul Fluence Method. Grace, it's so wonderful to have you on the program today.

Grace: Thank you so much for inviting me.

I'm so honored to be here today and, you know, hopefully I can bring something, you know for your audience and listeners. Also, they can get out something from this conversation.

Anthony: Absolutely. So let me kick this off by asking you what is the most meaningful experience you've had in the last week?

Grace: Oh, so last three week.

There are many things happened, but one thing really touched me was one of my new client so she's so busy. She has three kids and she's working two, two jobs and one business. But she's from Africa country and her kids, I'm, I'm living in Australia, in Perth, in Australia by the way.

Mm-hmm. And her [00:01:00] kids were born here in Australia, so they are citizen Australia. But somehow they had a problem since 16 years. So she was on bridging visa. For 16 years. So can you imagine that fear and a sense of uncertainty? They've been worked through her husband and herself and two weeks ago, three weeks ago.

Yeah. She decide. Do something change in herself. She realized, okay, I'm exhausted. I'm chasing everything. I'm not doing anything for myself. And she's doing study for master degree as well. Oh, wow. So, yes. PG one very high achieve, and she was like, oh. Between doing my master degrees and coaching, I had to choose.

So I called my sister and she said, okay, investing in yourself is the best, right? Mm-hmm. So she made that decision coaching, and guess what? The next week they got the visa.

Anthony: Wow. [00:02:00] The stars aligned.

Grace: So that's it. So I, I'm not saying that coaching is a, you know, miracle is a fixed magic. It's not about that.

Yeah. But it's like your intention, your decision in life. You need to make a decision, you know, for yourself. And, but we are so busy doing other things for other people, you know, chasing the things we don't hear. We don't listen what is important for us. And then she made that decision. And universe bang, you know?

Okay, I hear you. I'm telling what is important. Here you go.

Anthony: That's beautiful. Well, thank you for sharing that. That's a, that's a great experience. I, I love that. Well. Tell us about the Soul Fluence method, how, how that came about, and how it can help those who are seeking greater meaning and purpose in their lives.

Grace: Yes. The soul Fluence is a influenced by soul, so leading by soul. Mm-hmm. So, you know, we can often say a soul is like a [00:03:00] maybe religious or, you know, spiritual but soul. For me, it be present. Yourself. Mm-hmm. Really connecting with who you are. So your inner voice your true self, right? Yeah. So soul flu is really how we can become.

Our soul. And then leading others. And leading ourselves first. Right. And, and then leading others.

Anthony: Mm-hmm. So

Grace: how it came to me is because I've been in this personal development since 12 years, and I'm, as you get on my profile, and by the way, that's why I attract really high achiever clients because, you know we, we understand each other.

Sure.

And, I was Tony Robbins coach for eight years. So, you know, I studied two years, but I didn't know what, what coaching is. I was like, what is it? I can help everyone. And anyone. That's how I felt really. And I went to see Tony Robbins. I did all his events four events in five months. And that changed [00:04:00] really my life, I would say.

And I started my coaching business and then six months later I was invited by my coach, Tony Robbins coach, to become Tony Rob Robbins coach. So I worked for him for eight years and then I ended up. Last three, four years as a master and platinum coach. So really serving his top clients. And then after that I did a I did a vipasana, I don't know if you heard about it, the Vipasana meditations, silence meditation.

Mm-hmm. So I've doing a lot of spiritual journey like you know, not, not religious, spiritual journey, but Right. I'm Catholic though. So I did all these things and last. Three years. I do Doctor Dispenza work so lots of his meditations, his re and, and all that. Now I look back my journey. I think I'm in really, really good space now because I'm in the flow.

I, I think I really. Know who I am, and then I have that kind of faith, you know, in my life.

Anthony: [00:05:00] Mm-hmm.

Grace: So in from that space, I look back, okay, what was missing? What made me to, to this space? Now, it's not only one thing, really, I think it's a, everything really supported me and gave me who I am today. So it's a physical body and your mindset and the soul, the consciousness, what do you call?

Yeah. Mm-hmm. So if I end up, I categorize everything I've done. It comes down to three things. Body, mind, soul. Yeah. Body mindset. So it was quite like you know, very popular world. Like I, 10, 15 years ago, everybody talked, body, mind, soul, yoga, and then all these things. Yeah. But when I say really body, mind, soul is I call body as a vessel.

Mine as compass and the consciousness of the soul as a light, so. In fact body. When I say body, of course it's a body, physical body, but it's really body energy. Yeah. You can be very fit and healthy and not having [00:06:00] energy. Right. Energy in your body. Yeah. Yeah. So we have a that seven and eight body energy cha chakra, what do you call Indian people or body energy centers.

Right. So I think that, opening and connecting with that each center of energy is very important. So it aligns your body energy and after the mindset. Yeah, so mindset. It's really your limiting beliefs or whatever, you know, your, your how can you say ceilings, you know, everything is stopping you as a, you know, in, in a mindset.

But mind doesn't work by itself. I think it goes with a heart, but most of people nowadays, a problem is disconnected. Yeah. You're using so much brain, brain work. You know so, really that coherence of mind and heart together. So that's what I call mind and unconsciousness. Once you have that body really aligned with the right mindset and.

You can tap into that consciousness, what we call quantum [00:07:00] fish nowadays. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Frequency manifestation and all these things. Yeah. So I, I, I think that that's in a nutshell, in summary, I think that's what I learned all 12 years. So I try to bring all these things together as much as I can under, so.

Anthony: That's great. One of the things I wanted to ask you about was it seems like at, at least in the Western world, it seems like anxiety is like at an all time high espec. And we know from the data especially young, young people you know, they're, there's, they're more anxious than ever. Why do you think that is?

What is it about our modern. Society that kind of brings on this anxiety, and then what? What can we do about that?

Grace: Yes. So there are few different way I can say about that anxiety. So first is a really body physical reaction, [00:08:00] isn't it? Mm-hmm. So what you call like a survival mode. Yeah. So we are.

Mammals arent, aren't we? Yeah, we are. We are born as a body. As a animal body. Yeah. We evolved. So we are not animal anymore because we have a brain, we have a consciousness. But in the time when we are in jungle, we had to survive. Yeah. So we have that primitive brain, which protect us. That survival model.

Yeah. Yeah. So when we are like a, you know, front of lion for instance. We become like a protective, yeah, we become survival mode in that moment. It's not the moment you're gonna think about, about your dream or you know, loving and then think about others and then caring. It's not that really you become, that stress hormone is dominating you to survive.

Mm-hmm. And that gives you that.[00:09:00]

In that time you know, the of jungle, we need have that only to survive in the moment of risk, in the moment of danger. Now, in the, this modern society, we don't live in jungle, but we feel still like a living in jungle. We created our own jungle, isn't it? Mm. Where does that come from? So. We don't need to protect ourselves from you know, the, the, the other animals.

But when we are attacked our ego, that's exactly how you feel back. You feel like you're attacked by animals, other animals, right? And then you become straight that survival mode and defense mode and you become really ego centered. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. In the survival mode, because you can think about others right in the moment.

Yeah. So. Now, since young age, we are [00:10:00] conditioned to compete with others and compare with others, and we are judged consistently. Right? Yeah. In that moment, it's all about your ego. You need to protect yourself. Yeah. And of course you become that survival mode and protect mode and anxiety mode, fear mode, everything becomes a fear.

Mode.

Anthony: So it's really, it's it's fear that's driving our actions a lot of the time.

Grace: Exactly. But the bad news is even anxiety, that stress hormone, you can be addicted.

So once you are in that mode of, you know, functioning without the stress all the time, once you don't have, you know, I have my clients even me like, like, you know, many years ago when you stop like, oh.

Should I do something? Yeah. Am I, am I right to stop and I enjoy this, you know, that like a rest or not do nothing [00:11:00] because you have a feeling, okay, you have to do something right in the world. Yeah. Or you have to do more. Yeah. So I think that we are addicted, that stress hormone when it's missing. So therefore we create up again more and more, and.

And of course social media, so you know, all the, all the other young people as you mentioned, right? It plays even more that you know, competitiveness and then a judgment and in stress mode, and then all.

Anthony: Yeah. And we, we, yeah. We live in such a fast-paced world now with the technology that we have. And I, I was just having a conversation yesterday with somebody about this.

Like, the, the irony of it all is the, the tools that we have are supposed to make our lives easier. We're supposed to be more efficient so that we can have more time to do the things that we want to do and focus on the things that matter most. And yet we're, we're busier than ever. And, and. Like you said, we're, we're addicted to productivity in a way in, in a, in a not so healthy way.

I think. So what are some [00:12:00] practical strategies that we could implement to to try to deal with that problem of being in survival mode and focusing too much on, you know, productivity versus focusing on the things that matter most?

Grace: Yeah, it is very interesting you mentioned that I still believe, I, I, I'm, I'm a, I'm a believer.

AI can really support our life even better. Yeah. Mm-hmm. It's like a mobile phone, you know? It depends on how we use it. AI, for me is the same thing indeed. There, there to really do the robotic, you know, the systematic work. So we supposed to human. Are not supposed to do that type of work. We are eight hours a day in the office or in the factory.

Right. We created that word now and then we you know, we are, we need to fit into it. Right? But the, the problem with the AI is the same thing because we are, we are not master of [00:13:00] ai. We are. Why? Because we, we are not a human being. We are not connected our soul, we are not connected to who we truly are.

We pretend we become like a robot. We become like a ai. So we are competing against the AI as if we are another ai, isn't it? So I think the only way we can have that how can say the, the big master or, you know, the, the or even partner of the AI is becoming human being true human being. What makes a different human being than ai?

It's your heart, it's your, you know, the consciousness. Yeah. Yeah. Doug, come back to your question is what? What do we need to do is you need to know who you are really. First of all, you don't even know who you are, how you can support others or lead others or lead ais. It's impossible. Yeah. So I really, really, even my corporate clients, [00:14:00] entrepreneurs or, you know, even any clients, I really start with a self-awareness because we are so busy to take taking care of others, especially, you know, moms or parents, our kids first, you know, job after that and everything else, and then you don't know even who you are.

So, I have so many clients come and Grace, I wanna be happy and I ask. What makes you happy then? Big silence. Yeah. I dunno. I don't know what makes me happy. So how can you get happiness if you don't know what makes you happy? Right? Yeah. So I think it's a simple step. You need to know who you are, what do you want in your life?

Really not what other thing other people want you be.

Anthony: Right. What does that process look like to, to try to figure out who we are, what, how, how do we go about doing that?

Grace: So how many hours do you

[00:15:00] spend to know about yourself?

A day?

Anthony: Yeah. Not, not many, if, if any. Right.

Grace: Hello? Right. So. We, yeah, we listen to podcasts, we, you know, read the books, you know, or we go to the events and all that.

But that's still teaching. Yeah. Because if you don't do it, if you don't on yourself it's just a teaching. Yeah. So knowing something and doing it is a different thing, but people think if you know. It's done. I know it. So therefore it's good. No, you have to do it. Yeah. So simple things really put some time, you know, for yourself.

Sit down. So that's, I think coaching is also, you know, valuable. Yes, of course there are good coaches, you know excellent coaches or who can support you. But having your own time for that one hour per week or 45 minutes even, you know, it's time for you and to sit down and reflect on yourself. With the [00:16:00] support of coaches.

Yeah. Mm-hmm. So I do give, I give a really simple exercise, like a swo analysis. Yeah. Swo analysis is a marketing tool. So strengths is weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Mm-hmm. So strengths and weaknesses are your internal and opportunity threats are your external elements. So just to brainstorm your personal and professional SWOT analysis.

Start to write down, you know, some people type, but I really personally like you know, writing down because it gives you a different way of learning you know, to your brain. Mm-hmm. So write down, brainstorm, what are my strengths, what are my weaknesses? Yeah. And what opportunities do I have with this?

Strengths, this dynamic. Weaknesses. Yeah. And threats. Same thing. Second work I usually give is Ikigai. There's a book, it's a Japanese philosophy. So if you wanna be fulfilled in your life, you need to admit four things at the same time. One [00:17:00] is what you love to do. Second is what you're good at. Third is what you can be paid for.

And the fourth is what the word needs. So if you, so it means you're living in your passion, mission, vocation, profession, everything in one. Yeah. Yeah. So it's a quite interesting exercises very simple as well, because it's four things. Yeah. Like sweat analysis, but sometimes simple is powerful. So you can write down everything you love to do, you know even when you're young, you don't do anymore singing, dancing or drawing, whatever, right?

And what you are good at, what you can be paid for beyond your job. Not only your job mm-hmm. When you, not only your degrees. Yeah. But whatever, whatever you can be paid for and what you think the world needs. So I do once a year for myself, because I evolve myself, so all my strengths has changes and my what I, you know, what I'm good at is changes, you know, so I, I do that exercise [00:18:00] every er, I go somewhere myself, and then I isolate myself and I do exercise.

When you start to write, you see it's obvious. Oh, okay. I used to do that. Are you, I am good at this. You know, all these things. So yeah, it's a very simple step, but I think you can start from there. And of course there are so many, like a personal profile test. Yeah. I love Gallup strengths finder because that gives you really focus on your strengths.

Not, not weaknesses. Oh, weaknesses, okay. So knowing your strengths is because so many people focus on weaknesses. They always focus on what do I need to improve or what am I good at? You know, that's, that's our conditioning from school, you know, you know, you are not good in math. You need to do more. And then, you know, there's things, no, you are good what you're doing.

You know, focus on your strengths. And really develop that, you know? And of course after that so many other things that, you know the lifeline exercises and all these different things, you know, I use to have the self-awareness. Once [00:19:00] they have that funny, you know, they start to have self confidence.

Anthony: Mm-hmm.

Grace: But people. Avoid to know themselves because they have a fear of facing themselves because they focus so much on weakness and then they have a fear of, what if I'm not good enough? I find out I'm not, you know, that good person or I'm not, you know, whatever. Yeah. So they avoid it, but once they, you know, discover it, then like, oh, I'm like that.

Oh, I have this. Oh, you know, and that gives such self confidence.

Anthony: Right, right. Another question I wanted to ask you about is. We, you know, we talked about social media and the technology and, you know, the fast-paced world that we live in, it's so easy to become distracted these days. And, I don't just mean on a macro level, I mean, you know, just day to day, like just.

Working, you're, you're doing your job, but you're, you're checking email and you're looking [00:20:00] at social media and, and it's hard to like focus, right? I mean, I think a lot of people struggle with that. How can we increase our ability to sustain focus and concentration?

Grace: Don't go there.

Do you think a successful people they are on Instagram? They are on Facebook. Do you think they're going to Facebook and scroll?

Apparently average people do 3000 kilometers. That's it. Of scrolling

Anthony: 3000 kilometers.

Grace: Yeah.

Anthony: Wow. That

Grace: that's what we do. Yeah.

Anthony: Yeah.

Grace: So

that's a, that's a lot, isn't it?

Anthony: Yeah.

Grace: And so I support some of the, you know, 'cause I love high performance.

My daughter is a tennis player as well. She's in college tennis. So I supported some [00:21:00] professional tennis players, right? And when we trained as a mentor coach, I supported them. Two things. Two things I tell them. One, no phone on the table when you eat second. You put Tracker no more than one hour and a half a day because I was surprised.

I dunno how that happened. Usually. So between five to nine hours

Anthony: Yeah.

Grace: Of screening.

Anthony: Yeah.

Grace: And they play tennis, they do exercise, they do everything. So when do they do that? Five to nine hours. So imagine if you are not tennis player, if you're not doing exercises, what do you do? Do more.

Anthony: Right? Right.

Grace: So I think you need to have that discipline and knowing this is not real word.

It's not real word, you know? Mm-hmm. It's like ai. You can leverage them, [00:22:00] but don't be, how can say slave? Yeah. Of the technology who supposed to serve us. Yeah, it's so easy. Go there. But again, you know, the, the people who, who live their life fully and then, you know, successful and then living, you know, fulfilled life.

They don't go there.

Anthony: Yeah.

Grace: Guarantee. Guarantee

Anthony: you, you mentioned earlier in the interview you, you talked about meditation. Is that something that's, that's helped you to be able to focus and concentrate more on, you know, what, what you're trying to do?

Grace: Absolutely. So myself, I was a corporate word, you know so before studying this personal development for me, meditation was like after retirement.

And yoga was like after the death,

Anthony: you know, like

Grace: pouring kind of things, right? Yeah. But I really realize [00:23:00] it's fascinating. Meditation is not just a spiritual feeling good and make you good person. It's not about that. It's really scientific. Evidence behind it. Yeah. So I'm not going there because it's not topic today, but seriously, the meditation helps you train your brain and in getting that state of, as you mentioned, the focus and annoying yourself and then all that.

Yeah. So it's a more like a, for me, it's a self control tool. Self mastery tool. Yeah. Rather than just feeling good thing. Yeah. So yes, definitely I do. You know, one hour and a half of meditation every morning.

Anthony: Oh, that's a long time.

Grace: Yeah. But again, everything can be addicted. I'm addicted to meditation.

It's so good. I go first thing I do, I wake up. Oh, my meditation. I wanna go and I feel good. Yeah, same thing. It's better to addicted to meditation than stress.

Meditation definitely helps, you [00:24:00] know, having that quiet state of your brain.

Mm-hmm. Not agitated and under stress. So, so meditation. Some clients, as I mentioned, you know meditation is a more like a spiritual connotation, so they don't like it. Yeah. And I give to counting down, simply counting down to 50 to one. So what you need to do is just close your eyes and visualize the number.

So 15. 49, 48, visualize and you speak out loud 50 49. Or if you have a spouse or somebody else next to you, then you know, in your mind eyes just so 49 and then you know, in your mind 48, 47, 46. So you visualize if you how can I say, reading the number at the same time, your brain can think at the. In the, in the same moment.

Yeah. Mm-hmm. So the goal is really [00:25:00] switching off your brain from your thoughts. So therefore you visualize and then you speak out loud the numbers and either give you at least 50 seconds of break for your brain. Yeah. So then after that, you can increase 200 or 150. Yeah. Guess what? I have lots of clients try that and a, a client call me, say, grace, you know what?

I can't do this 52, 1 so hard, 37. Each time I just go somewhere and my thoughts comes, I can't finish it. So she's very high achieve and she was like, so therefore I started from 20 to feel like I can finish it. Yeah. So 20 to one, she couldn't do it, so she did it 10 to one. So 10 to one, and then once she got used to it, 20 to one and then you increased 30, 40.

Anthony: Work your way up. Yeah,

Grace: exactly.

Anthony: Yeah. I've I've found that even. You know, 10 minutes or so a day of just mindfulness meditation can make a [00:26:00] real difference. I remember a few years ago, I, I'm, I'm an attorney in my professional life, and so I was sitting for the bar exam in a, in, in the United States.

You know, each state has its own exam. And so I was taking another state's bar exam and it's a two day exam and it's broke. You've got. Four, two hour sessions each day, you know, so it's a, it's a lot. And so I found that right before each two hour session, if I took just, you know, five, 10 minutes and just breathed and focused on, you know, being mindful, being present in the moment, that that really helped me to be able to concentrate during, during the exam.

And so I think it's a, it's a small thing and you can build up over time. And it sounds like you've, you've built up to you said an hour and a half that's, you know, that that's. That's amazing. But it's, it's worth a, an investment of your time has been my experience.

Grace: Absolutely. And then you're spot on.

Breathing is one. Under the exercise people think, you know, you need to put [00:27:00] candle and doing it is not only that, right? Yeah. So anything k keep you away from your thoughts? Meditations like even like a, you know, people playing high level sports or sports, you know, when you are, while you're playing, that you're focusing on one thing, what they call the zone, right?

Yeah, that's kind of a meditation too. So walking meditations or breathing meditation. So simple. Like a four. Four, like a box. We call it box breathing. Mm-hmm. So you breathe in for 4K? Four four. Breathe out for four. And K. Four. Four.

Yeah.

Very easy to remember. Yeah. For. So you can alternate between that breeding box breeding and counting numbers, right?

So you can use a few things to really switch off your brain even a few minutes a day if.

Anthony: Yeah, absolutely. Well, I, I wanna be sure to ask you before we finish I, what was it like working with Tony Robbins? Tell, tell us about a little bit about that [00:28:00] experience.

Grace: Oh, he, he's amazing guy. I daily really respect and love him as a, you know, mentor.

And then as well how can I say, my boss and then, you know, he changed my life. I think he. Because I'm, now, I'm, nowadays I'm doing lots of Doctor Dispenza as well, right? Mm-hmm. So if I may compare like two different you know, personalities in school Tony Robbins is really more about body energy and mindset.

So how you can control and being master of your mindset yourself. Mm-hmm. And a amazing strategist and a doctor. Dispenza is more like a consciousness, really, also how you can tap it into that. Field of energy frequency and having that higher consciousness. So some different school and a different method

Anthony: And they work together. Right? The the two, I mean, it's like you were talking about earlier with the, your your method, the, the soul fluence method. It's it's body, mind, [00:29:00] spirit or soul.

Grace: Absolutely. That's why I put it their soul fluence thing together because s spiritual teachers teach you about spirit.

Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yoga teachers to teach you about body. And that I think it needs to be all together, you know? So that's why I created the simple things, you know? I'm not teaching like a, you know, PhD degrees, a theory. It's not about that. It's not all, but every day life. Everybody can do something simple every day.

So therefore they can you know, find themselves and connect with themselves. So therefore, there are leaders. For themselves and for others. Yeah. Because there's a, there's not like, you know, nothing like you know, you serve everybody else, but you feel alone. Yeah. And you feel lost still. Yeah.

It's a good feeling to serve and help others in that moment, but end of the day, if you are not connected with yourself, you are not, your life can't be really fulfilled.

Anthony: [00:30:00] Yeah. We, we only get one, one life. Right. That's that's all we get. Well I, I wanna be sure that you have an opportunity to tell my audience about how to, how to connect with you, but also you have a, a retreat that you do.

Is that right? To tell us about that and, and how people can learn more about you and, and what you do?

Grace: Absolutely. So you can connect with me through my website, www grace Najean my name, so Grace, N-A-J-E-A n.com. So you can find all the information about me, the SoulFluence, and my retreat and my coaching and, and everything.

My retreat is in Lobo, Indonesia. Really beautiful magical place. A near Bali. It's 30 minutes from Bali. Oh, wow. Yeah, so it's a seven days retreat as I mentioned earlier. We have seven energy centers. So

few months later, or even few weeks later, they just straight go back and then become like a past

person.

Yeah. Yeah, same. Why? Because [00:31:00] you have the same wife, same husband, same children, same bed, you know, same colleagues. So it's a very hard to keep. That transformation in life. Yeah. Yeah. So the reason why I keep that seven weeks, every week we meet together same people, hold the space energy and being accountable to make that happen.

And after that, I do seven month of individual coaching to apply with the implementation of the transformation for seven months in daily life. So that, that's a whole year of program of transformation.

Anthony: Yeah. So 7, 7, 7.

Grace: Seven program. That's it.

Anthony: I love it. Love it.

Grace, it's been a real pleasure talking to you. It's been a very enlightening conversation, and I, I appreciate. The, the actionable strategies and ideas that you've been able to share for my listeners, and I think our, our audience will get a lot out of this conversation. So thank you so much for coming on the show today.

Grace: Oh, thank you so much, Anthony. Thank you.[00:32:00]
