Ryan and Hannah talk about some fascinating trips and vacations throughout their lives. They talk about trying new things, souvenirs they kept, and how the places they went to are different from Kentucky. Ryan also talks about his thoughts on the Michael Jackson movie.
Hello and welcome back to another episode of a simple discussion. I'm Ryan and I'm here with my partner in crime, Hannah. Hannah, how are you doing?
SPEAKER_00I am doing so good. I hopefully you can hear me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can hear you.
SPEAKER_00Let's hope it's recording because I don't see the waves on my computer and can you on yours?
SPEAKER_01I can see it. So we're doing good.
SPEAKER_00Sweet.
SPEAKER_01So how has your summer been so far?
SPEAKER_00It's been interesting. We've had a lot of rain. We've been staying in while also enjoying the sun. And I've been in the pool.
SPEAKER_01Okay. How was that?
SPEAKER_00The water's not warm yet, but it's not as cold as it was this time last year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I went swimming for the first time last week and it was cold. I went to my dad's apartment to swim.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Honestly, the only way it's gonna get warm is if we have enough warm days. Or if you're just working out in the pool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You want to hear about how my summer's been going?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's go forward.
SPEAKER_01It's been going good. Last week was my busiest week so far because it was the Taylor County Fair in Camelsville. You know where that's at?
SPEAKER_00Yes. There's a college in that town.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Camelsville University, yeah. So I got to go to the fair. We actually went to a lot of stuff last week. So Wednesday we went to a demolition derby. That's where cars crash into each other, basically. It's basically like a fast and furious, but they're mostly furious, you know?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There was this one event called the Enduro Derby, and basically they just do laps around the track, and there's a lot of contact since there's a lot of cars in it. They can crash into each other while they are racing those laps. So that was pretty fun to watch. I've never watched anything like it before.
SPEAKER_00Is it new?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Enduro Derby's new, but demolition derbies have been going on for a long time. My dad was actually in some demolition derbies.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yes, he drove a Monte Carlo, I think. I might be wrong. That is a question from my dad. Anyways, on Thursday, they had a special needs day at the fair. So we just thought to take my brother. There's a few rides that he could ride, but not all of them. But his favorite ride was the Ferris wheel.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the funny part was that's my dad's least favorite ride. He's afraid of fights. When we were riding on the Ferris wheel, it was me, my brother, and my dad's girlfriend. He was just looking away, like covering his face so he wouldn't see us go up in the air. It was so hilarious.
SPEAKER_00It's becoming more common for fairs to do special needs days.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm glad they're doing it because and it was cool because I saw this one ride that you spin around. Used to be called the Tempest, but you basically just spin around and go back and forth. They can adjust the speed for the people with special needs.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I was hear hearing about that last night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they can go as slow as they want. I thought that was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, I actually found that interesting too because they did that on some rides like that in some neighboring counties where I am.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I passed out while riding the ride. It wasn't funny at the time, but now it is. It was a ride called The Superman. And it goes back and forth. It like spins you around like for a couple minutes you're riding around backwards. And then once I start going frontwards, I was out of it. My dad was so scared he had to tell the person to stop it so he can put me down. And he checked on me, and I was alright because I felt the ride stopping, so I knew something happened.
SPEAKER_00I think we call that the pirate ship ride.
SPEAKER_01That's the one that rocks you back and forth. You're actually spinning around backwards and then going forwards, and I guess it went too fast for me. I passed out.
SPEAKER_00Maybe I'm getting my rides confused. Because I know they can tone down the speed on the pirate one as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then Friday we went to the truck and tractor pool. That's our thing. My dad and I.
SPEAKER_00I guess Reed can't handle that.
SPEAKER_01No, there's one class they can't handle. It's based on classes. It's different. There's like trucks, then tractors, then they actually had semi-trucks that night. It was pretty cool to watch.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, one went the highest feet because you have to go a certain amount of feet to win in your class. And it went 353 feet.
SPEAKER_00Dang.
SPEAKER_01And they're pulling this sled that carries a lot of weight. So it's actually pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00I'm surprised the engines don't go out because of that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've seen it. Some have actually blown up, and they have given my dad and I a heart attack. Yeah, when a car explodes, you know it. Okay. Or your heart knows it. You want to talk about what we want to talk about today?
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. I gave you the task of figuring out a last minute topic in less than 48 hours.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I just thought since it's summertime, we could talk about our favorite vacations or trips we've been on. It doesn't necessarily have to be during the summer either. Like it could be like during winter or fall, whenever you went to those vacation or trips. But it can't be inside Kentucky. I don't count those as a vacation or trip.
SPEAKER_00Well, I've done a lot of mini vaces in other counties, so yeah. Because I grew up making small long stays like down in Bowling Green in Scottsville because most of my dad's family is from that area. So I've seen Bowling Green change over the years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Has it changed a lot?
SPEAKER_00You would be surprised. A lot of stuff that you have seen like during college was not there when I was a kid.
SPEAKER_01What is your favorite thing to do? Like go to the beach, sightseeing, or just go to different states you've been to?
SPEAKER_00I would say I'm a mix.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that's me.
SPEAKER_00I like going to the beach, I like going to amusement parks, and I like sightseeing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's me. The last thing that I've done that I've thought about was San Antonio.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_01And that was in January. That was mostly to see my cousin's brother. He's in the Air Force. And so he was doing training there. And she invited me. And I was like, yeah, sure. I had nothing else going on. I went with her and I actually had to fly a plane. That was my first time flying a plane. Wow. It was cool flying a plane, just seeing the view. It literally looks like a map. It looks like Google Maps. I'm not kidding.
SPEAKER_00Well, I've flown several times, so okay. So I'm like, I don't look at windows.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So in San Antonio, I got to see the Alamo, which my cousin didn't know what that was. And I make fun of her for that. Because you're supposed to remember the Almo.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm pretty sure I learned about it and forgotten about it.
SPEAKER_01The big line is remember the Almo. That was supposed to be a joke, but it wasn't. Anyways, we went to they have different missions, which is churches. Alamo wasn't mission. It's basically churches that people fought around, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_00That does. And for it being in Texas, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_01There was one mission that looked pretty cool. It reminds me of an old western that I would watch with my grandparents. They had these three bells hanging, and that just reminds me of an old western I watch.
SPEAKER_00Never watched a western. Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there's some westerns that are good and some that are overrated.
SPEAKER_00We'll talk about that later down the road.
SPEAKER_01We went to this place called the River Walk that's big in San Antonio. It's underground, so we had to walk downstairs to get to it.
SPEAKER_00Was it cooler down there?
SPEAKER_01Yes. And it was funny because I went around the winter time and it was 70 something there.
SPEAKER_00That sounds really nice.
SPEAKER_01We hung out at the river walk, and they were trying to dare me to jump into the river. I was like, I bet's two or three feet deep, and I'm like, I'm not gonna break myself, so I'm not doing that. Then a few days later, we went to this place called the Tower of the Americas.
SPEAKER_00Never heard of that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's kind of like this base needle, but it's shorter in feet. We got to eat at a restaurant there, and they had this restaurant that was where you were seating at, it could rotate you to see the view of San Antonio. Wow. And that was probably my favorite part of the whole trip because I love sightseeing too. I got to see the Alamo from up there, the Alamo Dome, where the San Antonio Spurs play. I thought that was pretty cool. That was a fun trip, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_00Did you try any famous Texan food?
SPEAKER_01I tried Tex-Mex. Okay. And it's basically Mexican food that I've eaten before.
SPEAKER_00Tex-Mex is pretty popular in certain Mexican restaurant chains.
SPEAKER_01I also went to a In N Out burger. No, it's Whataburger. There's a lot of Whataburgers in Texas.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I was like, yes, that was what I was thinking of.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Did you go to a Whataburger?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think it's the biggest food chain in Texas.
SPEAKER_00And Bucky's originated out of Texas.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's right. What was the last place you went to that was like a vacation or a trip?
SPEAKER_00I just went on a trip a couple weeks ago, but it'll probably be Lord knows down the road, probably a month. By the time this comes out, I went to St. Louis to just go see a musical.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to be honest, St. Louis was probably one of my least favorite trips. I got to see the St. Louis Arch, which was awesome.
SPEAKER_00That's what we did. That was one of our main things we hit up while in St. Louis. And other than going to see MJ the musical was like going to the arch. And also, it was a very well-known theater we saw the musical in. And it was a very beautiful theater. Okay. And it was a huge, huge theater.
SPEAKER_01The thing was there was a lot of stuff for just kids to do there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, one of the things my parent one of my parents wanted us to do, I was like, I don't know. I feel like I've outgrown that phase of life, even though they're well known. And I was also more interested in the arch than that. And I didn't realize they had a whole museum underneath the arch.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they also have the Mississippi River there too, which is cool to me.
SPEAKER_00And part of the tickets, which was right across the street, was the old courthouse. And apparently it's a very big deal because Frederick Douglass and his wife tried to get their freedom at that courthouse.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really?
unknownMm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00If I'm understanding it correctly, because I was dead tired and thirsty.
SPEAKER_01We were trying to get tickets to go up to the arch, but it was just sold out.
SPEAKER_00Well, the day I was there, apparently they still had it, but we didn't go up the arch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_00We wish we could have seen a St. Louis Cardinals game, but they weren't in town.
SPEAKER_01Do you want to hear something funny?
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01I had the chance to watch the Spurs play the Lakers.
SPEAKER_00Dang.
SPEAKER_01But we didn't do it.
SPEAKER_00Ticket prices?
SPEAKER_01No. The thing was Hayden, oh, my cousin's brother, my bad. But he could get into the Spurs game for free. And he could bring people, but it was up to what he wanted to do, and he didn't want to do it. And I was like, oh man.
SPEAKER_00There's times where you almost like need to be like the better host and like take them to stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I'm like, oh man, I could have saw LeBron James.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01But I'm alright with it. At least I got to see Lovell play Western, by the way. That's foreshadowing because that was before I went to college.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00You like to you like to rub that in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I do. I would say like a top trip. My mom asked me what was my top three favorite trips. And I would have to say one is probably Memphis for me. Because this was my 16th birthday.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And my parents got me tickets to go to Graceland.
SPEAKER_00I've heard it's not as big as they show it.
SPEAKER_01It's not, but it was awesome for me though. We went to all the different Elvis exhibits, got to see all his cars. There was an exhibit of people who were influenced by him.
SPEAKER_00And who was? I'm curious.
SPEAKER_01Kiss, The Rock, Freddie Mercury for sure.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Those were the big ones, in my opinion. Like any pop? Probably Adam Lambert. I don't remember like the pop ones.
SPEAKER_00I could see Adam Lambert.
SPEAKER_01Everybody loves Elvis. And it was awesome because we went around Christmas time because that's my birthday around Christmas time. And they had everything up for Christmas. And it was all blue for some reason.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like there was a song called Blue Christmas.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, he did sing that. Maybe they change out the themes every year.
SPEAKER_01They always put it up for Christmas though. And we got to see it is racquetball building. Racquetball is basically tennis. You have tennis rackets and then you bounce the ball off the wall and let it bounce and hit it with your racquet, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense. I mean, I've seen that game in movies a lot, so Yeah, I I don't remember the last movie I watched that had racquetball.
SPEAKER_01Big.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01With Tom Hanks.
SPEAKER_00It's been a while since I've watched that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there was a scene where they played that and then they got a into the fight at the end of the scene.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Then he then he has a bloody nose. And then he had a garden where him, his twin brother, he had a twin brother, his mom and dad, they're all buried there.
SPEAKER_00The movies don't talk about him having a twin.
SPEAKER_01They did for a little bit.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01They like told it at the beginning of the story. It was like talking about when his dad went to jail for $14.
SPEAKER_00Man, jail used to be cheap.
SPEAKER_01Hey, that was how much it was back then, and it was a lot for back then.
SPEAKER_00Like that's nothing, but I don't know what it comes out to today.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. We went to Bill Street in Memphis. It's awful now. That used to be the big music scene that you saw in Elvis. Like Lil Richard played there.
SPEAKER_00I know who that is.
SPEAKER_01I was actually gonna ask if you knew who Lil Richard was. Because there's some people in our generation who don't know who Lil Richard is, and that makes me feel sad.
SPEAKER_00The only reason I know is because it's part of the history of rock and roll class. And why I know this is Little Richard, I think, wanted to sue Elvis for stealing his music if I'm remembering.
SPEAKER_01Tootie Fruity.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01I think that was it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because Lil Richie and Elvis kind of had a little spasm.
SPEAKER_01Lil Richie. Anyways, the thing about Elvis is he would cover a lot of African American music. And the thing was he wanted those people to get royalties. He wasn't trying to make them better. He was trying to get the other people royalties.
SPEAKER_00But I feel like little Richie was big before Elvis was.
SPEAKER_01Actually, it was Chuck Barry.
SPEAKER_00That's who I'm thinking about.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, everybody thinks Chuck Barry's the king of rock and roll in St. Louis. Don't say Elvis is the king of rock and roll in St. Louis. That's what I heard.
SPEAKER_00I didn't run into that issue.
SPEAKER_01But I do like Chuck Berry too. He has good music. But we also went to the zoo in Memphis. That was the best zoo I went to because I saw two grizzlies wrestling each other.
SPEAKER_00If I'm gonna pick a zoo, I'm gonna pick San Diego Zoo.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, I heard San Diego Zoo's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've been to that one. And I was in elementary school.
SPEAKER_01It was crazy. We were in Mississippi, but we were close to Elvis' childhood home, but we didn't go.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if it's a museum or not.
SPEAKER_01I bet it turned into a museum so people can see in there what his house was like.
SPEAKER_00Now I know that Jackson Fobbs not yet because his mother is still alive. The one in Gary, Indiana.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Did you know they were from Indiana?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01My mom didn't. And I was so shocked.
SPEAKER_00Well, they talked about it when Michael died.
SPEAKER_01And my uncle's a fan of Michael Jackson. And I'm like, you didn't remember they were from Indiana?
SPEAKER_00I knew that, like, because of it was talked about like in many news articles or on TV. He's from Gary, Indiana, and it was brought up pretty heavily in other projects that talked about the Jackson 5.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but going back to the Bill Street, it was terrible there. There's like people in garbage bags there. The day after we are somebody got killed there. Like the day after we went there.
SPEAKER_00That's sad.
SPEAKER_01Bill Street has definitely changed from the 50s.
SPEAKER_00A lot of places have.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, changing to a more fun topic. What is one of your top vacations or trips?
SPEAKER_00That's hard because I've been in in the US and outside of the US.
SPEAKER_01That's okay. You could say outside the US.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna say outside the US because I really liked going to London, England.
SPEAKER_01What is that like?
SPEAKER_00A lot of fish.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I can see that. Was there many places that you got to see?
SPEAKER_00Uh we jam-packed a lot into 10 days, and we went around Christmas time, and I was in high school during this time. This was our Christmas gift. Like, we did no gifts but go over to Europe for three weeks.
SPEAKER_01See, that's what I want to do for Christmas. I don't care if it's outside the US, but just go somewhere.
SPEAKER_00It's fun, but it's also something hard to like wrap your brain around when it comes the day of Christmas. I am glad we did it the age I was. I liked going overseas during the Christmas season because of England celebrates Christmas just like we do whereas Spain does not.
SPEAKER_01Yeah Spain's a little different I heard.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's like they celebrate Christmas when the three kings came.
SPEAKER_01I could see that because it was around it was around Spain.
SPEAKER_00I like Spain but I liked England more because we saw a lot of shows because they were all in English. I like trying all the different foods we don't have here in America.
SPEAKER_01Ooh what did you try?
SPEAKER_00Their chips are very different.
SPEAKER_01Aren't chips aren't the chips basically fries?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah that's why I heard about chips I mean they really have fish and chips.
SPEAKER_00Yes and I ate my weight in it it was like a safe food. Oh I ate my weight in it. I don't like mashed peas. Did you did you eat beans and toast no I didn't that was something I'm surprised I didn't eat I think I would I think I would eat it.
SPEAKER_01I like baked beans I don't know how beans would taste on the toast that would just be that just sounds weird to me.
SPEAKER_00No there's a youtuber I watch where she likes to put beans on toast yeah she's probably from England. No she's from the Midwest apparently it's a Midwest thing as well oh she must be outside city limits anyways did you see like Big Ben we went past it we didn't go inside I rode the London eye I really liked it at night that was really fun my favorite thing was going and seeing the crown jewels.
SPEAKER_01How was that?
SPEAKER_00It was really cool you just ride a conveyor belt when you're looking at 'em you can't touch like you just ride this conveyor belt and they switch out what they put out every so often yeah that sounds cool because they have so many they have to trade out did you see the guards there like at Buckingham Palace? Yes it was good you just can't go up to them I get that but did they do anything? No they just stand straight on those horses like they're sitting up straight and if I'm understanding correctly if their flag is flying at Buckingham Palace that means the royal person is in but Queen Elizabeth was still alive at the time when I went so it would have been the queen was there when the flag was flying and if they're not there then there's no flag oh okay and I might have this vice versa I hope I'm right it's been so long I would go back to England there was stuff I didn't get to see or do I didn't get to do the Harry Potter experience. Oh man you kind of have to travel a little bit out of London to go do that. But it's a full it's a full day and I'm a big potter head oh I think everybody knows now on here I was sad we didn't get to go do that the Sherlock Museum I really didn't get to go in and I like Sherlock. I did do high tea though and that's very common to do in England. That was an interesting experience oh did you have to do it properly and stuff like drink with tea? Yes I like tea I know I love tea too but I don't want to do stuff properly you know like grab it with my two fingers and drink it and hold my pinky out I don't think I held my pinky out I think I just drank it like how I drink a mug at home.
SPEAKER_01You didn't drink it properly then no but you like had the setup of like the proper foods to eat at tea oh were there people that went like no oh okay that was the guy from Titanic okay I need to watch that yeah there's this one guy in Titanic they're very upper class and he goes yeah yeah that's hilarious and dad makes fun of it every time he watches it that's so funny probably my number two trip or vacation I would have to say Washington DC because we jammed all we could into three days and we can't do that.
SPEAKER_00No and me who spent a lot of time up there is like shaking her head going why did you do that?
SPEAKER_01Of course we had to see the Holocaust museum first to get that out of the way so we weren't crying the whole time it's just sad. Like there was like there was one exhibit where it showed all the piles of hair oh what about the shoes one yeah the shoes the hair got me though more than the shoes it was just crazy seeing all the hair and then they have like this big memorial wall and that got my mom seeing the memorial wall.
SPEAKER_00No I can hold it together through that but like my heart was just wrenching.
SPEAKER_01The shoes and hair got all of us we did see the Washington Monument. It was awesome to see it was very high. So you went up in it no we didn't okay I wanted to but we didn't have the tickets that's the thing about these trips you have to get tickets before going it was okay because it was just cool seeing it yeah then we went to Ford's theater yes that was awesome to me because I don't know if you heard but I'm from Hodgerville Kentucky and that's really where Abraham Lincoln was born at a lot of people say Illinois or Indiana. Well he was raised in other states but born in Kentucky yes Hodgerville and it was cool seeing where he was sitting and you could actually see the gun that John Wilkes booth shot him with.
SPEAKER_00I forgot that I've actually done the museum tour.
SPEAKER_01Yeah it was a tiny it was a tiny little thing I'm gonna be honest. What'd you think about the stack of books of how much people have written about Lincoln it's crazy because I've read books about Lincoln because Lincoln's my favorite president like in history well I might be biased because I do live in Hodgeville we celebrate Lincoln we have Lincoln days didn't know that it's a big parade that goes on the first weekend of October everybody a lot of people dress up as Abraham Lincoln it was funny one time my dad and I were walking and this Abraham Lincoln came up to us and was like hey Billy because that's my dad's name oh my gosh dad you know Abraham Lincoln and he was like I guess I do I was like you were born in 1809 that is funny and it's funny because both of their birthdays are in February okay I have seen a show at Ford's theater and the seats are not as comfortable as you think no because you know how tall I am I was so uncomfortable sitting through the show uh because they do Christmas carol every year they're known for doing that they still do shows we went one year and saw a Christmas carol and the seats are still like like they've been redone but they're still kind of like what they were like back when Lincoln was president. Then we went to Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool that was pretty cool. That's amazing yeah and then we went to the war memorials oh I forgot about Arlington Cemetery oh yeah that's a whole day yeah that was my that was my favorite part of the trip because we watched the changing of the guards there oh yeah they do that once an hour they do and they do 21 steps and then do the click of the heels to turn around and then they switch and it's like most quiet you can't make noise or they will get on you. Now you can't control a baby or toddler if they make noise oh there was this one time my dad told me the story a kid went towards the tomb of the unknown soldier the guard yelled at them what yes they're very serious about the tomb of the unknown soldier well how's a little kid supposed to know well the parents are supposed to control them we also went to my favorite war memorial was probably the World War II memorial. I guess I haven't been to many memorials up in DC yeah that one is awesome because they have one side that's the Pacific and one side that's the Atlantic and it has all the states for the Pacific and the Atlantic okay and territories. Wow yeah and they have different wars that went on inside the memorial that's crazy yeah the fountains represent the wars that occurred yeah we should have been going out to these memorials a little bit more but we just didn't make it it's all good but I don't know why I freaked out when I saw Pearl Harbor though probably because I knew about Pearl Harbor more.
SPEAKER_00It is talked about in the school system the most yeah and it's can you believe they'll be 85 years old in December no I can't believe that yeah December 7th 1941 wow I'm good with numbers and a history buff it was crazy that Declaration of Independence was 250 years ago I know it's wild and it was cool seeing that what was your second favorite trip or vacation what would be my second I always love when we go to New York City I always love New York ooh you like the dirty places it sounds like no offense New York or London oh but I've seen the bigger cities it's like yeah I enjoy the beach but I just like the cities more because there's more to do I want to go around it'll be busy but I just think it would be cool to go around Christmas time to see the Rockefeller tree. Yeah I would too I'm honest I'm gonna be like yeah I want to do that too some of my favorite parts about New York is going to see Broadway shows.
SPEAKER_01Yeah that's the the original Broadway so I have seen several Broadway shows in New York I have seen wicked so not something rotten Finding Neverland oh Hamilton was your favorite I was gonna ask what was your favorite to see there but I bet it was Hamilton.
SPEAKER_00I would say between Hamilton and Deer Evan Hansen I love Deer Evan Hansen and I saw it with the OG cast oh man and that's the one playbill I lost because I brought it back for like my parents to see because we went from New York to DC after the time I saw Dear Evan Hansen and that was about the time I noticed I wanted to start collecting playbills and it got thrown away I was so sad. Yeah we saw Wicked in Nashville and I've also been to the 9-11 museum what was that like it was very chilling it was like the Holocaust museum my mom was like I can't believe grown adults are crying over this and I'm like well it was a big tragedy and think about now they'll be 25 in September yeah I'm just great I'm just grateful people weren't talking through it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah because the younger generations don't know the biggest impact we were young I wasn't even around oh okay but while I was it's big because my cousin was almost a month old wow I was a couple years old but I don't remember it I just remember my mom and dad saying what they were doing I was probably with my grandmother is probably what I was doing because my grandmother kept me and my cousin when we were younger so we didn't go to daycare really my mom was working at daycare and my dad was working so they were just working doing their normal thing and dad said they had the news on during work.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense and I think some companies sent people home that day yeah and some I remember some teachers tell me they would actually put the news on during that yeah that's what I've heard over news stories when it comes around that time of year. And like they had actual news clips within the museum playing during different parts of the museum from different networks. I think I saw more today show than like GMA or the other one because I think the today show I guess did the best job in the museum side of how it was reported because Katie Kurick was a very big well news person. Yeah 9-11 and so they I think used her voice the most and I think possibly someone on CNN as well it's been a while.
SPEAKER_01I remember hearing stories about I forgot who the person was but they had to go up and host SNL like a week after 9-11. That I heard that was hard going back to SNL after that yeah I feel like it was a country artist. I forgot who the actor or actress was I don't know but it was someone big because they've talked about it I don't remember who it was I remember Toby Keith did something Alan Jackson did a song yeah it's and there's a musical play based off of 9-11 Alan Jackson was probably the biggest own because it was where were you when the world stopped turning oh yeah and that song gets me where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day do you want to hear my favorite trip so I would say my favorite trip was South Carolina and it was because I went to the beach that was my first time ever going to a beach and I was really young and I remember it vividly.
SPEAKER_00I was like six or seven when we went I'm about to go there this summer it's awesome it was awesome when we went I don't know how it is now but we were at the very top and it was right in front of the ocean and it was just so cool to see how the ocean looked because it just looked like a wall I I've never been to Myrtle I it seems to be the most popular place people like to go to I like Myrtle beach it's gonna be big but I like Myrtle beach better than Gulf Shores because I remember all the things I did at Myrtle Beach more than Gulf Shores. I was gonna say one thing I don't like about the Carolina beaches is like when you're first walking in there's a lot of broken shell into the ocean.
SPEAKER_01I mean when I was walking on it the sand was it was the softest sand and I didn't step on anything when I was in the ocean I just remember this one time dad and I walking on the beach there and a wave knocked me back to the land and dad and dad thought he lost me he was looking for me and then I was waving like hey dad and he was like oh there you are nice and so he found me I went to one of the Carolina beaches and there was just a lot of broken shell in the sand walking into the water. I don't remember which one it is Myrtle was not like that but we went to a place called Broadway at the beach boardwalk at the beach and the biggest thing we saw there and dad was excited about seeing it was the Kiss coffee shop. Yeah I think they still have it there but it's a coffee shop and it has I don't even know if you know who Gene Simmons is they have his big boot there. I've heard of Gene Simmons he's my favorite in Kiss but he has they have like a replica of his boot and it's huge.
SPEAKER_00Dang that was my favorite thing seeing that that thing I just remember playing on the beach most of the time that was a fun time what was your favorite trip vacation that's hard because I liked going out to California because I've been out to California now it feels wild to say I'm gonna have to say going to San Diego. I've been to the beach I love the beach I love going to Disney I love I love them but it doesn't be going out to California which is something not talked a lot in our history classes like I vaguely remember but I know how fresh the Mexican food was and I'm a big foodie. Ooh you're probably near Mexico too were you at the southern San Diego southern part isn't it yeah it's like really really close to San Juan or or not San Juan Tijuana and like I had some of the best Mexican food I liked rock walking around old San Diego they have a very big known hotel out there the Grand there's a very big hotel out there that's fun. You probably know the hotel that I'm talking about if you looked it up and their chili is very different from our chili.
SPEAKER_01What did they put in their chili?
SPEAKER_00It's a lot lighter it's more of a black bean corn base.
SPEAKER_01What was the traffic like in California? I vaguely remember because I was in late elementary when this happened our traffic is terrible in California well Los Angeles I think it's more Los Angeles that it's worse.
SPEAKER_00I heard there's like eight to ten lane roads and that's the same way in DC when you hit rush hour and I bet the gas is high there like I bet it was like eight bucks when it was at four something here. Probably all I know about Californians from when I was a kid to now is like people complain about the prices of cigarettes. Like I heard about it as a kid and I was so freaking confused until like I was doing my internship back in 2024 because a certain individual who's been on our podcast before like he went out to California at the week of our spring break to go DJ a wedding that's an interesting story and he like complained to me off air about he said the price of cigarettes are like so expensive and he showed me and I was like dude I don't smoke and I have no interest in smoking and I thought it would get him to quit yeah me neither I thought the people in San Diego were complaining about the price of cigarettes.
SPEAKER_01I could see them complaining about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah and it was a lot of out of staters because of we were going there as a vacation for my mom and I but my dad was at a work conference.
SPEAKER_01Are you those people who keep stuff from your vacation or trips it depends like we buy souvenirs. That's me everywhere I go I get a souvenir I try to find something I ended up in St.
SPEAKER_00Louis getting an arch hoodie because I forgot To pack a jacket, and then we got an ornament for our Christmas tree from the arch as well.
SPEAKER_01I got a lot in Memphis because Grayson, I got an Elvis blanket, and I still get into that blanket. It's my favorite blanket. I have this sign that says Elvis Presley Boulevard on it. I always try to give my grandparents something. I got my Papa a Cadillac postcard. My Nana a Elvis dress up as Santa postcard.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I got a keychain from Graceland as well. And it has my name on it.
SPEAKER_00My mom has one of the pink Cadillac on her key ring.
SPEAKER_01I think I got my Peppa the pink Cadillac postcard.
SPEAKER_00And we might have a Graceland ornament. They went to Graceland without me. And they got a few things. My mom got a keychain. And they got me a Graceland sweatshirt. I haven't worn it yet because when I let my mom buy me souvenirs, she always buys me the wrong size.
SPEAKER_01San Antonio, I got a remember the Almo shirt.
SPEAKER_00That's hilarious.
SPEAKER_01And it has the Almo on it.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_01And Washington, D.C. I got a shirt. It has the lighthouse on it with the American flag in the back.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I have a gajillion things from DC. Between playbills of theaters we've been to, because there's three theaters in DC. You had the Fords Theater, another theater. I forget the name of it, but I've been to it. And then the I've been to the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, Kennedy Center?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've been a lot of times.
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's really cool, especially on New Year's Eve.
SPEAKER_01I was actually shocked about that when you said the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, that's what's known. It's nothing else. It's just the Kennedy Center.
SPEAKER_01I think at Myrtle Beach, I still have it, but it's like this bottle I have with many seashells in it and sand, and it has my name on it. And I got some seashells from the beach. I was in elementary school, so I wanted to get some seashells from the beach.
SPEAKER_00I would say my favorite thing from DC is I have a baseball cap with the DC flag on it. I really love the DC flag out of all the state flags.
SPEAKER_01My favorite thing I've gotten from anywhere is probably the Elvis blanket. I'll never get rid of that blanket. I don't blame you. So it's from the movie Jailhouse Rock. And it's him in that prison suit just doing his different dance moves.
SPEAKER_00I like that song.
SPEAKER_01Is up there in one of my favorite Elvis songs.
SPEAKER_00Everybody's been to Graceland Without Me.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry. I didn't know you back then.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but my parents just went without me and then told me they went. I was like.
SPEAKER_01Man, I still have just looking at it now, I have a lot of Elvis stuff in here. I may have to put the camera on with you one day and show you all the Elvis stuff I have in here. But my mom and dad, I still have the Graceland ticket. Yeah, and it's cool looking.
SPEAKER_00I get a lot of t-shirts, and usually like after so long, they shrink on me, and I have to get rid of them. I'm very tall torso.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I did get Graceland shirts, but they shrunk.
SPEAKER_00Like I said, they last for so long.
SPEAKER_01Well, actually, one didn't shrink. I still wear it every once in a while, so.
SPEAKER_00And a lot of my t-shirts I've gotten over the years are now in a t-shirt blanket.
SPEAKER_01I need to do t-shirt blankets, but it's just hard to pick like which t-shirts I want on the blanket, you know?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, mine is a mix of stuff. A lot of it's stuff from my high school years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_00I like how mine turned out. We did a lot of my high school stuff. I threw in one t-shirt I got during college when I saw Hamilton because I was I became obsessed with Hamilton in high school. Because you Hamilton like came out when I was in high school. You were probably middle school.
SPEAKER_01I remember hearing about Hamilton when I was in middle school. Yeah. Hamilton, I heard the good musical. I like the songs on it. My favorite's probably My Shot. Is that the song?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's probably my favorite song on there.
SPEAKER_00I like Skylar Sisters. One thing I think I haven't talked about, but it was like one of those because I traveled back and forth to DC. That's why I kind of didn't count it as a vacation, but it was during vacationing times for me. Was I went to out to Washington's house out in Virginia.
SPEAKER_01Oh really?
SPEAKER_00On Martha Washington's birthday.
SPEAKER_01What was his house like?
SPEAKER_00Very interesting. And I love that my mom's favorite part of the whole tour was how he ran his outhouses. She goes, it's so cool. Because most of them are just plain normal, and how like he invented something where you pull it out to dump it.
SPEAKER_01That people around those times took showers once a year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was more of they did baths like once a week.
SPEAKER_01I heard once a year.
SPEAKER_00That's weird. I think it was once a week.
SPEAKER_01There was a trivial pursuit question, and dad asked us in the 1700s, how often would people take showers or baths? And the answer was once a year.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Whoever thought of that didn't pay attention in history class.
SPEAKER_01Eh. I still like the once a year answer though.
SPEAKER_00It is hilarious. But it was so hot and huggy the day we went to. Because Mart Martha's birthday is in the summer.
SPEAKER_01When is it?
SPEAKER_00June or it's June or July. I can't remember off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_01I can't either. Anyways, it was good talking to you, Hannah. I know. I need to make more episodes, but another episode, which I'm excited for other people to hear.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm not a fan of this genre, and you're and I'm still working on that other one. It running two podcasts is hard.
SPEAKER_01It's hard when you did a podcast over two hours long.
SPEAKER_00Uh close to two hours, and I've just barely started working on it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what I did.
SPEAKER_00I'm thinking yours is more two hours. Uh that one was close to an hour 40.
SPEAKER_01I just found two guys who love talking about movies and stuff. I do too, so.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I can't wait till we have this round table sometime. It's gonna happen by the end of the year.
SPEAKER_01I feel like if we do round table stuff, it'll take like two hours because you'll want to hear everybody's answers.
SPEAKER_00And I'm gonna be like a sheep on the wall or a fly on the wall the whole time.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna try to be.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna be outnumbered. I'm just I'm just gonna say one of my answers as soon as I say it, y'all are gonna lose your mind. I already know because I wrote it down just to play with y'all.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I've wanted to do an Elvis episode.
SPEAKER_00You need to do that with Tommy.
SPEAKER_01I would want to do it with him and two other people, and they're pretty big from Kentucky. I'll have to ask Tommy about that one.
SPEAKER_00Honestly, I would like to get I would like to get a musical artist on, honestly.
SPEAKER_01I'm going to talk to Tommy about the big one for me. I don't want to say on here yet.
SPEAKER_00Do I know?
SPEAKER_01Oh, you know. Well, I'm between two, so I'll tell you the artist after the episode. I won't do it after I edit all these episodes.
SPEAKER_00Like how many do you have to edit?
SPEAKER_01I do this one.
SPEAKER_00But I want to hear your review of the Michael Jackson film since I put my review out before we leave.
SPEAKER_01Oh, do you want do you want to just a quickie? It was good. I knew they were gonna do a part two because they still needed more to it. I love how they did the Jackson 5 and how their dad was because I knew how their dad was. I still thought their dad was the best performance, though.
SPEAKER_00I am gonna have to agree.
SPEAKER_01He had more of a transformation, Colin Domingo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he did. Honestly, he played the dad the best.
SPEAKER_01And that was Jafar Jackson's first movie. He's been acting like he's been doing it for like 20 years or something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like he's really good. And I don't know if he's gonna be in part two or if they have if he's not in it.
SPEAKER_01I'm just guessing. If he's not in it, the movie won't be as good.
SPEAKER_00Well, they're gonna have to do an aging Michael, so who's gonna play the aged Michael?
SPEAKER_01I mean, do you remember the end? Bad? Yeah, they whitened his skin for bad.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I didn't know that. Well, I wasn't watching because there was quite a bit of strobe, and I don't watch because I'm epileptic.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00But that was the only part I didn't see because of all those strobes at the end.
SPEAKER_01The young Michael did a good job.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_01And that was his first movie. I love watching him in interviews. It's weird.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I think they found him through social media.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because he was doing the later Jackson, Michael Jackson moves. I just loved how they did Thriller. I mean, Thriller's the best album of all time. Oh yes. And it's the best music video of all time.
SPEAKER_00That and probably Billy Jean.
SPEAKER_01Billy Jean was my favorite, actually, because I might embarrass myself, which I don't care. I did the dance to Billy Jean. It was that Motown 25 performance, and I could do that dance move, move for move.
SPEAKER_00I actually I think that was one of the videos that was shown to me when Michael Jackson died, and I was like, who's Michael Jackson?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that was his first moonwalk performance. That's why it's memorable for me. I didn't like how they ended it with bad. That's why I didn't like because bad is another best-selling album, and I feel like they should have kept it for Michael too.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well, and they might go back to it again.
SPEAKER_01Bad is one of the most best-selling albums of all time, too. And yes, I think they should do the whole album because they have Man in the Mirror. They have to do the smooth criminal video.
SPEAKER_00Also one of his most iconic moves.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, Bad is iconic too. The music video Way You Make Me Feel is iconic too. Have you seen the music video for Way You Make Me Feel?
SPEAKER_00Uh, I don't think so, but I've heard this song.
SPEAKER_01It's a good music video. I mean, all his music videos that I've seen are good.
SPEAKER_00I like The Scream.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Scream one is a good music video.
SPEAKER_00And they don't care about us. Those have been playing on repeat since I saw MJ the musical.
SPEAKER_01I love black or white. They need to do that. They have too much to put in Michael 2.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they do. And it'll be interesting. It's probably gonna be longer.
SPEAKER_01I did love I mean the off the wall thriller and bad are my favorite Michael Jackson eras.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what mine would be.
SPEAKER_01I'll put Jackson 5 in there too because I love Jackson 5. And that was portrayed really well. Well, that was my mini review of Michael. It was good talking to you, Hannah. I bet we'll talk some other time, I bet, in the near future.
SPEAKER_00In the near future, either as a round table or another topic, or texting each other. That is totally fair, anyways.
SPEAKER_01This was a simple discussion.
