You were not the problem. But perhaps one of your strengths has been leading alone.

Somewhere along the way, you got the message: too loud, too direct, too intense, too emotional — too much. Or perhaps you received the other version: not confident enough, not patient enough, not accomplished enough — not enough. So you learned to keep that part of yourself quiet, and you called it maturity.

But here is the truth this episode is built around: the parts of ourselves we hide do not disappear. They keep shaping how we lead — our tone, our silence, the reactions we cannot quite explain — only now without our attention or our wisdom. You were never too much. That strength was simply leading alone.

Danita introduces us more fully to "Evie" — the bold, decisive, direct part of herself she spent years trying to keep safely contained — and the morning she discovered what hiding Evie had actually cost.

In this episode:

  • The message many capable people absorb — "you're too much" — and the quieter belief beneath it: that we must become different in order to be good
  • The morning Danita yelled at her boss at Special Operations Command
  • The two parts of herself she found in the same journal entry: the woman who pushed too hard, and the little girl on a mountain of books who simply wanted to help people see
  • Why the answer was never to eliminate the strong part, but to stop asking it to lead alone
  • Kaplan and Kaiser's research on overused strengths — and how decisiveness can become force, care can become rescuing, and patience can become avoidance
  • What it means to hold grace and truth in the same room
  • How hidden parts come out sideways — through anger, silence, resentment, control, and exhaustion
  • What Danita's children, who are first responders, have taught her about honoring the heart that carries difficult things

A line worth keeping: "What we refuse to integrate does not disappear. It continues influencing how we lead — only without our attention or wisdom."

This week's practice: Name one part of yourself you have been told is "too much" — or decided is "not enough." Do not immediately correct or condemn it. Ask what it is for: What does this part notice? What is it trying to protect? What gift might it carry if it were understood and led well? Then ask what quality it needs beside it — perhaps your courage needs empathy, your compassion needs discernment, your patience needs honesty, your confidence needs humility, your vulnerability needs wisdom. The goal is not to shrink that part of yourself. It is to stop asking it to lead alone.

A question to sit with: What part of yourself have you been treating as "too much" — and what has it been trying to contribute all along?
