You know, Julie, when people come up to me on the street and they ask, what's it like working with Julie? I always say the same thing each and every time. Do you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Wonderful, phenomenal. She runs the show. I couldn't survive without her.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let's fucking happen. What I was going to say is, you know, Julie, she's one cool funky cat. That's what I say. I like that. Yeah, you know what? It kind of covers all the bases. You know who else is a cool funky cat?
SPEAKER_01Tell me.
SPEAKER_00Wes Meadows.
SPEAKER_01Wes Meadows.
SPEAKER_00Who just so happens to be here in our studio today.
SPEAKER_01Wes Meadows.
SPEAKER_05Welcome to the show. Oh my gosh. Thank you for having me. Julie, I can already tell that Julie really runs the show around here. It's like, Andrew, at this point, you're just a puppet. I am. And Julie really is just, he's you're Marionette. This is now the the Hey Marionette show. Yes, exactly. And uh yeah, I lent, I I hope the viewers at home can see uh uh Julie is wearing some beautiful glasses. You are a funky cat with those glasses on. I had to give you a pair because you're you're you're just so funky.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I did also want to tell you that when I got dressed this morning, I picked out it is a shirt from my alma mater. It says eat them up cats. Oh my gosh. Because I was like, I have to have something that at least relates.
SPEAKER_00Julie goes the extra mile for our guests.
SPEAKER_01I try to.
SPEAKER_00You really do. It makes a difference. That's why we have guests willingly and and excitedly coming back to our show day in and day out. So thank you. You're welcome for going the extra mile for it. One of Vegas' top musicians. I am so excited you're here, man. You had first of all, thank you for being here. Andrew, thank you for having me, you guys.
SPEAKER_05Thank you for those kind words.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you're so sweet of you. You had we just went to your EP release party at the space on Monday. We had a great time. A blast. I had so much fun. One of the most amazing things that I saw, and we've you know, we're we're friends with a lot of local musicians. We've had some of the best musicians here on our show. One of the most impressive things that I've seen at your show that I haven't seen on any of their others, is you did a couple covers, but you also did mainly originals. The audience was singing along to your originals, which I haven't seen before here in in Vegas.
SPEAKER_05You know, I I literally have chills when you just said that. Yeah, I that is the thing that was the most unexpected moment for me. And it happened uh where where we sort of first crossed paths uh a couple months ago at Frenzy Fest over at the Palms. Um they sang back the song I just put out, yeah, and I was overcome. I I couldn't even handle it. That's still mind-blowing to me, and that wasn't a thing I didn't ever dream about that. You know, you dream about certain things in music and being on stage, and I never thought one day they're gonna sing my song back to me. And then it happened, and I'm like, this is the I I will live in this moment forever.
SPEAKER_00Was Frenzy Fest the first time you witnessed that, or did you sing it really?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they sang the song back to me, and I it was like, oh my gosh, my my head tilted back, tears are well and I'm like, oh my no, I got a key change after this. I can't cry.
SPEAKER_00No, you the the room was packed at Frenzy Festival. Shout out to Bayer and and uh Woody and for everybody setting up Frenzy Fest. That was so much fun. But so what was going on at Frenzy Fest for those uh who didn't get a chance to go or are unaware of it? It was a concert at or a festival at the Palms. And the thing of it was it was basically there were three different stages, and it was once a one show was done, or once one band did 20 minutes, you jump to another stage, you see that band. There's really there's no downtime, really. Some of it there was some overlap, so there were some times where two bands were going on at once and um you know you kind of had a split. But one of the things that I wanted to do is go see band B over here at one of the other stages. But I saw a rush of people going to this other stage, and I'm like, where is everybody going? And we go in, and it was you. It was that's how what that's how you saw me? Your room was packed, man. I mean, shout out to everybody that performed there, it was all great, but your room was packed to the brim. We got stuck in the back.
SPEAKER_01Well, and see what happened, your show actually caused beef between me and Andrew very briefly.
SPEAKER_00First of all, so many things cause beef.
SPEAKER_01It's not just your show, but yes, what happened was we were at one of the other stages, and he was like, Hey, I'm gonna go use the restroom real quick, I'll be right back. And I said, Okay, I'll wait right here, and then we will go to Wes Meadows show together. Fifteen minutes passes. I'm like, where is this man? So I'm like, I'm gonna go over to Wes anyways, and he'll meet me there. He was already in there. He ditched me and I had to come find him. Luckily, I knew where he would be.
SPEAKER_05I Andrew, I lured you like a siren.
SPEAKER_00I lured me like you had a white van and told me you had candy in the middle. There was a white windowless van, and you said you had candy in the middle.
SPEAKER_01You were so blinded by Wes that you forgot I even existed.
SPEAKER_00My girlfriend was there too. I forgot she didn't do this.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00That was it. But no, you did a great job. But actually, I and I have to admit, I'm gonna try to get this set up, and if I can, I'll just turn my screen around. That wasn't the first time that I was introduced to you. The very first time that I was introduced to you was when we had Janjan on. My dear friend. We love Janjan. Shout out Janjan. Shout out Janjan. She dressed up like Bruno Mars. Jan Omar's, we called her.
SPEAKER_05I know where this is going.
SPEAKER_00And we saw this video. We'll we'll put it in post. Oh you are dressed up as Jesus. Yes. She is dressed up as Jan O'Mars. What's going on here?
SPEAKER_05So here's the story. And I hope I, you know, I hope the audience at home doesn't think this is extremely sacrilegious. You know, we I now, but an iconic moment was presented to us where the opportunity for Bruno Mars and Jesus to both sing Locked Out of Heaven together, a brut an iconic Bruno Mars song, and we we did that, and that was a moment. Look at that. Yeah, I'm not saying it's so bad. Okay, that was incredible. Yeah, no, I I love that. Well, and what happened was I I kept at that moment in time, this was like two years ago. Yeah, I was I just started growing out my hair, and the Jesus comments started, and I'm like, you know what? Here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna I I leaned into it, and uh yes, I love Jan Jan so much. Yes, we're seeing so good. Oh, look at that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You got moves. Look, you know what? I can move the hips just a little bit. There might have been a tequila or two.
SPEAKER_00That's okay. That's all right. You turn water into wine. I love that. You turn water into tequila.
SPEAKER_05That's why they call me funky Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Funky, funky Jesus, Jesus Meadows.
SPEAKER_00But I'll tell you what, you really are nailing the not only the sound of your music now, and I feel like but the look also. And I feel like you really found your groove. Because when we were doing research on you, your music, you we could tell you're kind of trying new things of you know what worked, what didn't work, but now you found this like how would you describe your music now?
SPEAKER_05You know, I took a lot, oh my god, it took me a long time to bake. That's my line. Yeah, is like I needed a while to bake. I always knew I had it in me, and people would tell me, but I I I needed some some crafting for the sound. Um, I'd say I'm definitely a soul singer. Okay. That's what I found. You can say I'm RB, you can say I'm I'm a little funky, um, but I'm a soul singer, you know. I I I'm so inspired by the classics. Um, and I had a lot of iterations. So I had I had a couple original bands that were great, and and we had fun, and and those, you know, bands are tough. It's really hard to get them off the ground and to and to move it. Um, I did a lot of work with like one-on-one producers, so everything is done digitally. I found my sound finally when I decided to go all analog. Uh the entire record, Timeless for a day, the new EP, is all analog. The only digital processing is the mixing. So we recorded it all live. Um and yeah, and and I I found the sound. I found the horn section, everything just sort of led to each other like, oh, what should be in this song? Yeah I know some badass horns. And now I have the most badass horn section in Vegas. I really do. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01What was the the name of the guy you said you said it at the show who arranges your horns?
SPEAKER_05Yes, my the guy who arranges my horns, his name is Jamar Perez Mendoza. Incredible. He has another band called City Boys, and they're the baddest horn band ever. Um, and so I have sort of uh stolen uh the the horn section. Uh Casey Bibiano and Aries Harper are the other two trumpet players. So how did you how did you put the band together? Um you know what? I just decided shoot, I gotta get a band, and I need the baddest. Yeah. Uh the baddest people.
SPEAKER_00You just pick and chose if you know I want you or you, and then you is it because you could hear that they would mesh well together, or did it take a little trial with error?
SPEAKER_05Um, there honestly was no error. I I was I have been blessed uh with the universe just putting all the puzzle pieces together for me. And I'm like, thank you so much, God universe. I I love you, I appreciate you. Um I they're kind of the best musicians in Vegas. Like I hate to I hate to say this. If any musicians you talk to, so my guitar player Sean Carbone, bass player Sam Kurzatowski, I think many people in the scene would say that they're literally the best guitar player and best bass player in the city. And I'm just lucky that they are playing with me, you know. My drummer Santiago Luna, he produced the album, he mixed the album at his studio Cutie Bros. So I just somehow assembled the Avengers, and I please nobody take my eye out. I don't want to be Nick Fury. Um, but yeah, I like I got the Avengers and they're freaking badass. My two background singers are also the most incredible vocalists in the city, Dre Woods, Chiminioka. And uh yeah, I think I just got lucky that people wanted to work with me. And I'm like, thank you guys.
SPEAKER_00It really worked out so well because they all just seem like they've been playing together for for years. It seems like they all just kind of got together and they knew each other, you know, in terms of who carried what and what you know who was responsible for what. And it just it as the audience member who I don't really have the ear for music as you do, I just enjoy music. It it sounded like it was uh per perfection. Oh, that means you you and your Nick Fury style style of uh putting together a team. Julie didn't get that joke because she's also never seen the event.
SPEAKER_05Oh gosh, it's it's it's there's an I can't see what I'm dealing with. I know.
SPEAKER_01Julie, we need a there are probably so many things that I have seen or read that he has no idea about.
SPEAKER_05Debatable. Well, it's because you're a scholar, Julie. And and we we are just men of the mud. Yeah, we we don't, you know, men of the mud. Men of the mud. We're we're farm folk. We don't know, we don't know what Julie. I I should say before, you know, we were talking about different references. I won't bring up what's going on behind Andrew, the Star Wars, because Julie's never seen Star Wars. We definitely avenge that apparently. No, Julie only watches like you know high high class films. She calls them films, not movies. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01All of my true crime films. That's the back of it.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So music has been in your life for since almost the you were born. What's the earliest memory of music that you have for yourself?
SPEAKER_05You know, the earliest memory. Um, my family is wrapped up in music. Um, the first moment that I hit the stage was second grade, Frosty the this is so funny. Frosty the Snowman, and I'm playing Frosty, and I it's I know this is so funny. I look into the audience and I'm like, oh my god, I'm making people happy. This is the only thing I can do. Yeah, so thank you, Frosty the Snowman. Since then, I've melted slightly.
SPEAKER_01Definitely, physically and spiritually, and emotionally.
SPEAKER_05I love that.
SPEAKER_01Um, so I know in your show the other night, you talked a little bit about your mom and her musical influence on you. Can you tell us a little bit more about the family aspect and how it ties into who you are as an artist today?
SPEAKER_00Beautiful, beautiful performance uh of that song uh that you dedicated to your mom. That was that was really like the whole room.
SPEAKER_01Everybody felt it. Yeah, the whole room. Even when there was a little bit of a comedic relief when the mic stand fell.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh but even after that, you know, you you laughed it off, and then immediately you sucked the whole room back into that feeling. You did such a great job with it. But sorry, please can you tell us about thank you guys?
SPEAKER_05I know when that mic stand fell, I love I I was like, this is God testing me. Like during the most dramatic song out of all, you know, half the time I'm boping, I'm dancing, and then the most dramatic song. Not only does the mic stand fall, it falls onto the keyboard, it makes out blank, and I'm like, shit.
SPEAKER_00I can't believe it was at the the worst and best timing the the entire at the entire time. I kind of loved it.
SPEAKER_01I think it kept everything very on brand.
SPEAKER_05It did, because I'm so I I'm on serious. I don't I I I enjoy serious tones, serious um uh messages. However, the I want the delivery to be on serious, yeah. Um back to my mom. Uh I love telling her story. She is she's my hero. Um, and she's a hero, I I I feel like to a lot of people. Um so she had two parts of her story. Um her and her my aunt Kathy, uh, they were the Rocco sisters. Okay. Uh and also my Aunt Sally for a little while. They were the Rocco sisters when they were eight years old, uh small kids, my grandma put them all together. They're like, you girls are going out to sing. They they both hit the road at 16. Wow. So they didn't even finish high school uh uh in and uh they were they were growing up in Pittsburgh. Um they they hit the road at 16, they played Atlantic City, they played Vegas, they were just doing everything. They're doing what I'm doing right now, playing in like all the Vegas uh restaurants, lounges, and uh she was a singer for 34 years, uh, did some original stuff, uh, you know, uh had some originals that uh made the charts. Um she never uh the they they didn't you know make it make it to on the original scene, but a lot of people, there are a lot of people that are still around in Vegas that say, Oh my gosh, I saw your mom at X, Y, and Z, you know, 30 years ago. And I'm like, oh my gosh. So they made a lasting impact. Um she had me, and uh four years after that, she got diagnosed with breast cancer. Um and that was uh that was tough on the family. She was you know, this incredible woman with vitality. She was an incredible performer, a good heart, and uh it was it was really tough that our family went through that. Uh it metastasized to her brain, so she had to have a brain operation. And the doctors said she would live another year. She lived 22 years after after that entire ordeal. Um and the cancer came back a couple times. Uh, but she then went on to found a local nonprofit called the Caring Place. And she uh through that she brought help to uh thousands and thousands of cancer patients in Las Vegas, and that's still going. It's now under the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. Beautiful. Um and she's my hero. You know, I can it's so funny. La loss is this I can I I'm recognizing what a beautiful thing it is because I can at any moment in life I can cry about this. It's it's that real and it's that deep for me. Um and I know that that deep wound that that where that's where all the love was. That's where all the love is. Um, it's just taken a new form of loss and longing for my mom. And uh she's an incredible woman. And as much as I do it for myself and the music, I'm doing it for her. I love it. Because it's it's her dream, but it's it's I love that. She's passed it on to me.
SPEAKER_00The way you describe, obviously, I've never met her, but the way you described her, I see a lot of those qualities in you. The the love and the passion for the music, and just the the passion for what you do. Uh, she sounds like an amazing woman. Um, do you are your aunts uh still around as well?
SPEAKER_05Yes, yeah, yeah. My aunt, my one aunt, Kathy, she's still uh she kept on singing after my mom. She's an incredible, incredible jazz singer. And uh shout out, Kathy. Come on, Kathy.
SPEAKER_02What's good, Kathy? Yes.
SPEAKER_00I love that. One of the uh other parts of your show that were it was a good uh, I guess, segue into the next section was when Seth came out. Oh Seth is I would do an injustice if I try to describe what Seth is to you and who Seth is to the Vegas community. He's basically your your right hand. Can you kind of give the Vegas audience who or a description of who Seth is?
SPEAKER_05And how how words cannot describe uh picture picture a sequin, uh a sequin wall with the face of Betty Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, and Judy Garland.
SPEAKER_01All in one.
SPEAKER_05All in one. All in one, that is.
SPEAKER_01Um if a sequin, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe had a baby.
SPEAKER_05It would create Seth Roba show. He is one of my dearest friends. We've been doing a show together called Too Glam to Give a Damn. It's it was once called Till Seth Do His Part um for about two years now, which is incredible. I met him, this is full circle. I met him at Jan Jan's birthday party almost two years ago, and it was in a movie theater, the movie screen was going on, but the audio cut out, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was playing. Okay. And he then narrated for an hour and a half Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. And I am like, who is this creature? I need to know who this person is. And now, Julie, I don't think you would know any of the references that were said during this because it's way before your time.
SPEAKER_01We are the same age, but okay.
SPEAKER_05I know, I get it. Well, see, you're you're more learned. You, you know, you know, you know uh scholar?
SPEAKER_01Mudman.
SPEAKER_00Hello. We are the mud man.
SPEAKER_01Kind of I want to be a mud man. It seems more, it seems more fun.
SPEAKER_00You know how to be a mud man? You gotta watch these movies. You're gonna watch Avengers.
SPEAKER_01I'll watch them, I'll research the references, and unfortunately, that's still the thing that the scholar would do.
SPEAKER_05I'll get the shirts made. The Mudman. We are the Mudman. Good band name. I think we made it around.
SPEAKER_01All three of us. I think Andrew used to rap, but that's a whole different thing.
SPEAKER_00This show's about this show is not about me.
SPEAKER_01It's about okay. But Seth was narrating.
SPEAKER_05Seth narrated Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I'm like, I need to work with you. So then I saw him, I saw him while dressed up as Jesus. That day. It's crazy. It's all coming. This is what full circle. They we didn't plan this you guys. They he I'm dressed up as Jesus, and I'm like, hey, if you ever need a piano player, yeah, let's work together. And then the next month, a couple a month, a month or two later, he calls me and he's like, Hey, I've got a show that's gonna happen. We're uh it needs to happen in a month. Yeah, can you do it? And I'm like, absolutely. And Seth is just he what I feel I'm trying to do with like soul and And and and that classic music with uh you know sixties, seventies. He's doing that with his style of comedy, with his references, with with everything that he is. He's he is uh sort of the consummate entertainer. Yeah. Like that's what that's what Seth embodies. And so he's someone that I'm just so excited for the world to like really discover. I love it. Because it's so easy to fall in love with what he does. He's he's the best.
SPEAKER_01With your your show with Seth, excuse me, forgive me for not knowing the correct title, but are you also like do the show directing or show managing?
SPEAKER_05You know, the title of musical director, I've never felt more I I don't. I I am not I feel pretentious. Really? I know. Oh god. Let it out. I don't know. Don't be shy. It's well, yeah. So I we we work on the music together, it's a joint uh collaboration. And uh, you know, every month uh we we just pick some some fun music to do. And uh I'm I'm his little sidekick back there, and I I say my quips. It's so great. Yeah, I'm I'm the Julie. I get to I get to be the Julie. I I can't I'm the Seth. You're the Seth. I'm Seth, he's he's Julie. I think that's okay.
SPEAKER_01Sequin Mud Man.
SPEAKER_05You just want to be the Mud Man so bad.
SPEAKER_01I do.
SPEAKER_05Well you have a camo hat on.
SPEAKER_01It's he bought me this hat. Oh, I see.
SPEAKER_05The mud man bought it.
SPEAKER_01But what is uh the difference of like your your role or your attitude approaching a show when you are musical directing versus when you are like the main person out front, like in your show?
SPEAKER_05You know, there is I experienced this for the first time. This is kind of it's again it's real. Uh when your name is on the poster and people have bought tickets, there is something that happens where you are like, oh shoot, yeah, but I need to deliver now. When you're in the band, it's like, don't worry, I support you. You got this. Yeah. But then when you're when you are center stage, it's like, oh my god. And uh and you were uh talking about the EP show. Yeah, uh there were the the room is packed, and I'm like, oh no. That was I I'm like, oh god, I need to make it happen for you people. You paid money for this. This is terrible.
SPEAKER_00You could have come out and just done stand-up comedy the whole time, and we would have we would have loved it regardless. You did such a great job, and everybody there was so supportive of you. Were they uh other like people that uh kind of follow you around to a shows to shows? Like you you have a pretty strong support system.
SPEAKER_05I do, and it's I'm so grateful. Yeah, my friends, my family, the people that just listen to the music, fans. I guess I do have fans. And I they're my fans, but they're they're my my friends, you know. I I feel like every every person I have met who who has has been a fan is is my friend, and I I love to communicate and I love to to talk with them. I I I there are people there who have seen so many iterations of me. Yeah, like as as I was, you know, DMing people to come see the show. Um I'm like, oh some some of these people are gonna be so proud of me. Cause I'm like, finally all of them. Oh thank you. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01I didn't even know you and I was proud of you.
SPEAKER_05I love you, Julie. Oh my gosh. You're a mud man in my heart. You know what?
SPEAKER_01Honorary mud man.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, honorary mud man. If they skip past the first two minutes of this, they're like, what's with the mud man?
SPEAKER_01And then they'll have to go back.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yes, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Uh the show that you just did on Monday for your EP, Timeless for a Day. I feel like I kind of understood the message through listening to what you were saying and then also like the musical scoring with it and whatnot. But why did you choose the title Timeless for a Day?
SPEAKER_05You know, uh my friend, uh I was on a gig with my friend Monroe, who's an incredible musician as well. She said, Your music is timeless. And I thought, oh my gosh, I think that encapsulates everything that I want to do with this art form. Is I don't I don't want to chase a trend. I don't want to chase um a viral song. I just want to make good music that will stand the test of time, hopefully. And that's you know, that's that's that's up to the audience. Um so then I I just I made I made the CP. It's it's a little conceptual. It starts off where people are talking, people are chattering, it's like you're in a jazz room, and uh and then the mu and then the band starts and you're you're seated, you're in the audience. And so uh yeah, I just want to make timeless music. That's that's the goal. Timeless music with the message of love, and as corny and and as cheesy as that sounds, uh that's that's what I want the basis of all my music to be.
SPEAKER_00We love the corny, we love the cheesy, we want all of it. G give us more of that.
SPEAKER_01And I actually I didn't think it was corny or cheesy at all. And when you were you you had said essentially that same quote the other night on stage, and I was thinking about it throughout the songs, and I was like, really, every single one is about love, just different variations of it of it. Whether it's like like to me, Funky Cat is a very like self-love song. And then you sing about like love and loss, and that grief is really just you know, love trying to figure out what's next, and then obvio you know, the obvious like romantic type love too, but you cover all different variations of it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I'm you know, I'm real woo-woo, so I'm like, love is the basis of the universe, man. I love it. It's the I hey, I know no, you she's getting her second college degree, folks. She she knows woo-woo. Woo-woo! She knows the woo. Um no, I I think love, the word love encapsulates everything that you could ever talk about with music. So you funky cat, self-love. I I and that's I've always wanted to make a song like that. I'm a funky cat living in a dog's world. It's so funny and stupid, but it's it's real to me. Um and sometimes it's about you know love of the world, love of um, you know, romantic love. Uh but at the end of the day, I just want the feeling of joy or your perspective to shift through through my music. Those are the main two things. And that's where I those are the places I write from. It's either one-on-one, it's a concept, or it's here's here's my perspective.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting. Yeah, you wrote you write a lot about love and loss in in in your songs, and they're they're two powerful uh messages that you do a gr a great job at. So everything that you're trying to accomplish, I feel like you definitely have been, at least from the two shows that we've seen that you performed. You also both opened up opened up both shows with Funky Cat, right?
SPEAKER_05I did, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we have little we uh here in the office, we there are four of us here. We have little ticks or little isms that we do, and yeah, we'll randomly yell out like bruh or something like that.
SPEAKER_01We had to teach him the uh the new Gen Z way of using the word stimming.
SPEAKER_00Stimm, yes, yes, the stims. Yes, okay. So the our newest stim is I'll just be in my office and I'll randomly yell out, I'm a funky cat. Stop.
SPEAKER_01And then normally the response is one of us singing it in the the same tune that you do. I'm a funky cat.
SPEAKER_00You gotta we're stimming you, dude. Uh you're s and I felt if I say that right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you don't stim other people.
SPEAKER_05Okay, well, we stimmed west, whether we like it or not.
SPEAKER_01We're we're stimming west.
SPEAKER_05I thought we wouldn't talk about that, you guys. Um reminder, Andrew.
SPEAKER_01Stim is short for stimulate.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, regardless.
SPEAKER_00We're all getting that was you, that was me. Okay you're welcome.
SPEAKER_05Um we gotta snort. No, you know what's crazy? You're not the first people who have told me funky cat is now a stim.
SPEAKER_04People love I'm a funky cat. It's catchy, it is so catchy.
SPEAKER_00Uh so take me. So when you recorded your EP, you kind of talked a little bit about it on the show, but take us through the process of recording the entire thing. You you recorded it at your drummer/slash friends studio.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Cutie Bros Studio, uh, right in in downtown Las Vegas. Um, they do a lot of the local bands. Okay. What they specialize in, and you know, I'd I'd known them for a year, and I'm like, I'm gonna work with you. We we gotta do something. We're like, yeah, whenever it lines up, it's gonna happen. Um what they specialize in is live performance. So like bands going there, you know, people who are not necessarily in the box, so like everything's uh being processed digitally. Um that's that's his bread and butter. So what we did is I'm and I'm gonna give the process. Please, we want to because because I for me, I didn't I don't want to do it like everybody else. And not not that that's anything is bad with uh producing digitally, like it's it's great, incredible music. Explain the digital analog thing for people that maybe aren't aware of it like that. When when you create something digitally, you can edit, you can you you can do a lot of things that you can't do when it's uh a live performance in the moment. Um there's a lot of after effects, you know, and we we mixed digitally, um, but everything was tracked, uh everything was recorded in the moment, the band is there. Um we we we sort of do it in phases, drums, bass, guitar, and keys. Is that usually the process?
SPEAKER_00Usually always drums first and then Yeah, and we do it all at once.
SPEAKER_05Okay. So it's like the band is in it, and it it's I I wanted that to capture the feeling of those old classic records that are timeless, that uh fe have this feeling to them that you can't really get when you're layering uh, you know, okay, I just laid down the drums, I'm gonna I'm gonna do the guitar an hour later, or let me go back and and re-record it. And and there are parts where, you know, we we layered and and we did some stuff, but overall the main feeling was in the room of the moment of recording. And then we do the the horns separately. So I love that.
SPEAKER_00And like I said, like you really we could see the the uh evolving of of who you are as as a musician, and you definitely found your foot and you definitely found your groove with the sound, the style, and I love the fact that you know you're you're like, hey, I want it I want to I want to produce the the record this way, I I want it to be this way, even though it's not necessarily the most commonly way, or the maybe the even the easiest way today, but it's your way, and uh you're kind of you know you're trusting the process of what got you to where you are now, and you're trusting the process to of that EP to turn out the way you want it to.
SPEAKER_05And it the it was the gamble. Yeah, it was the gamble, and it turned out all right. I you know would you do it again? We're doing it again. I'm we already have the next two songs on the next album recorded. Um I'm I'm tracking it. The this one, the next album. Oh god, I'm tired. I'm I'm exhausted. Like, I oh my gosh. I wanted to get Wes a blanket real quick. He's gonna leave quick.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_00Take a quick power now.
SPEAKER_01Can't go in the studio. Wes is sleeping in my guys.
SPEAKER_00Julie, sing to Wes a lullaby so he can fall asleepy.
SPEAKER_01I'm a funky cat.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna end up like John Bone Jovi. Uh John Bon Jovi or no, that's right.
SPEAKER_01We'll sing it softly to get you to go to sleep, and we'll sing it loudly as your alarm clock.
SPEAKER_05That's right.
SPEAKER_01I'm a funky and that song is mine.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um no, I am this one is gonna take it all out of me, and that's okay. Yeah, because this upcoming one? This upcoming uh album. Um when I when I write, if it's okay I talk about this, when I write, I don't feel like I'm writing it. I feel like I am sort of okay, got the connection to the to the I'm woo, I'm getting woo-woo here to the divine, to the universe, to God, and I'm like, what's what is today? What what is the song? Um and they've been coming to me lately because now that I am playing this music in front of people, who I am as an artist has has now completely morphed into something else where I feel as though I have a responsibility and a duty for the message to make people happy, to to bring people joy, and to make them feel something. So yeah, this next one, oh my gosh. And we're doing it the same way, we're tracking it the same way, it'll have the same feel, the same sound, and I owe my sound so much to the guys that record with me, to to Santiago who who mixed it, who produced it. Such uh a lot of my sound uh is uh is completely reliant on my incredible band.
SPEAKER_00Uh real quick before we do that, somebody just cast it onto our see what they're doing here. What's going on? Who's uh who's casting here? They're so confused as to Tyler. For reference only. Is this legal documents that we're seeing? Like Clark County. Oh kind of entertained.
SPEAKER_05I thought you were doing this.
SPEAKER_01And then they I know I did too. I was about to message you and be like, turn your volume off.
SPEAKER_00Julie, do you mind unplugging that TV?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I was like, what floor plans? Did you build me a house? As Wes is opening up his heart. I'm just over here doing some work while I'm like, yeah, so my mom died. Anyways, like Julie, can you send me that PDF real quick?
SPEAKER_01That would be awful. I did 100% think it was you and I was about to tech type to you.
SPEAKER_00How disrespectful.
SPEAKER_01Well, I was about to say, stop doing that. Like, I was about to tell you, like, that is the rudest thing I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_05You've got a dull moment here on Pighead. That's right. I thought you were like surprised. I'm like, what's he about to bring up? I saw I th as I was coming here, I'm like, this is your life. Do you know that show? You don't know. I don't know. Again, I know Julie. Listen, she knows real things, she knows quality things.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna look it up while you reference it.
SPEAKER_05Perfect. And it goes, This is your life, and they take you through your life.
SPEAKER_01Okay, this is British, and it's from 1955. We could I feel like it's weird that you know. I know I know.
SPEAKER_00I'm weird. I'm weird. We're all a little weird. Well, one thing I'm I'm very excited for. Not only am I excited to have you here and listen to your story, but you're also gonna perform a few songs for us. Yeah, yes, awesome. Um we're gonna this is what we're gonna do. We're going to take a quick break. We're gonna get the and you're gonna perform. We've only had one other performance in this new performance area. Mojo Juju played for our block party uh in this new setup. So I'm very excited to have you perform here. You're gonna perform on you, this incredible keyboard that you brought in, which is miles better than the one that I have here.
SPEAKER_06I'm very glad you brought yourself.
SPEAKER_00We had Dara perform one of her songs, and she was she asked us, uh Dara Jazlin, she asked us, Do you have a keyboard there? And I said, Yeah, we have a great keyboard here. And she came in and she performed and she nailed it. But then afterwards, she was like, Do you mind if I bring my keyboard in and come back tomorrow? And redo it. And it I I couldn't tell the difference, but she sounded tremendous on her keyboard. So yeah, I I totally get it. I'm so glad that you brought your keyboard in because I had to. Mine's child's play compared to what you have.
SPEAKER_05You know, stop. Don't sew that keyboard short. It's you've heard it's so sweet.
SPEAKER_00I'll work on that. I'll do that during the break. Okay. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. All right. Well, we are back, and I am very excited for this because West, like I said before, is just our second performer using this new performance area. What do you think, West?
SPEAKER_05Oh my goodness. It's beautiful. I this is your Johnny Carson. Julie, do you know who that is? No, I don't. I'm not lying right now.
SPEAKER_00It's okay. It's okay. The audience knows that Julie probably doesn't know Johnny Carson, but that's all right. Um, I'm very excited because today you're going to perform a couple songs for us. What's the first song you're going to do for us?
SPEAKER_05This first song is named Clementine. Uh, you know what? Uh my line for this song is it's a song about inflation and fruit. Um, but it's really just a song about the world is crumbling around you, but you still have that place of hope and love in your heart that gets you through the day.
SPEAKER_00I love it. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_03Went out to breakfast, coffee at a new spot, said your head hurts from last night. You forgot anything to cope with, sad state of affairs, regular band, not going anywhere. Price of living, living on the grind, it's believing Mama you'll be fine. Take a vacation hotel down the street, no destination, life feels incomplete. Feeling tiny coming on top of fame pretty pigeon Come on time, take so sweet, even though the world comes seems to be falling a part of the shape. Come on, time better time least it's something from time Oh come on time Go to the movies Forget about yesterday Leave it to Hollywood Giving that sweet scare the price of living Living on the ground Everything gone stuff There's no surprise Quick then got two jobs again Remember your way Because life feels incomplete Feeling coming on your senses occur my dumb really peace your name is so sweet even though seems to be so Clement.
SPEAKER_00Beautiful. Oh wet. Man, you could wake me up with that my every every day at an alarm clock, please, because I will wake up bright-eyed bushytail. That was so just soothing. I I I feel soothed after listening to that.
SPEAKER_05You rock. I am here to soothe.
SPEAKER_00That's what you do. You're a soother. Soothe till it hurts. Is there any inspiration from Stevie Wonder? Because you really do give Stevie Wonder vibes.
SPEAKER_05You know, he's I mean, he might be my greatest inspiration. Really? In terms of phrasing with the words, um, in terms of stylistically the way I sing, the way I play the piano, like a lot of the chord changes are very reminiscent, you know, of of him. Sure. And I and I'm I'm not gonna hopefully I'm not plagiarizing Stevie, but I love it. Um but he is he's a hero. Um the music, the message, and the delivery from him really is just okay. I gotta do it like that.
SPEAKER_00I love it. Uh Stevie actually just texted me. He said that he's a big fan of West Meadow. So it works out fine. We're we're good.
SPEAKER_05Mr. Wonder, he's here. Is he oh my god? He's in the back.
SPEAKER_00Oh this is your life, West Meadow. This is now Stevie Wonder. Callback. Call the callback. Uh, that was beautiful. When you play, because you've played Clementine, you played it at the show as well. Does it where do you where do you where does your mind take you when you're playing that?
SPEAKER_05Do you just turn your brain off and just kind of just zone out or or are you just kind of in that Well, sometimes on stage I black out, and that's usually from the alcohol. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Do you do you drink when you're performing? I actually know. I am I it's uh I'm actually completely sober because I I feel like it messes with the it messes with the mojo here. I don't know. I don't wanna I don't wanna involve any anything else, any other energy. I can give.
SPEAKER_00I get that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I I I am often a visual, the song's always every song has a visual to it. And I see this as like, you know, here the camera pans, it's city block, it's grayscale, and there's just like a a a glimmer of orange through all this. And it's like that's like a hope. That's Clementine.
SPEAKER_00That's Clementine. It's not just a fruit, which is a delicious fruit, by the way.
SPEAKER_05Very much so. Shout out, we should get them to sponsor.
SPEAKER_00Shout out Clementine. Julie, can you make that happen? She's on it. Excellent. Uh beautiful. That was so good. And again, like one of the the the one of the many you words I would use to describe your your style is just soothing. You uh just have that soothing vibe. And I know I know that you're you're you're trying to go for love and you know, shut up funky and all that, but soothing has to be up there because it's just so just so mm-mm-mm.
SPEAKER_05That means a lot. I'm I I'm pretty chill, and I want to, you know what I I make music to? I want to make music that you can groove to. You're in your car and you're just driving along. You don't gotta, you know, it might not be a dance party all the time, but maybe you can give a little shimmy, you know, a little shoulder shake.
SPEAKER_00So with your when you're when you're doing these these performances, uh, how do you keep the vibe going? Or is there a strategy of how you want the feelings in the room to go? Like you obviously strategize what uh in what order of songs you perform. What's the strategy behind all the the whole set list you have?
SPEAKER_05You know, I really care about the run of the show in terms of what is this song going to lead to? You know, I think that's an important part of live performance that is sometimes overlooked where the show format has to make sense. So I and it's peaks and valleys, you know. I want there to be peaks and valleys. I want I want to go from an upbeat dance, I'm going over with the sax player and I'm scattering, to like a a you know, a gritty ballad where I'm like, you know, I I gave the audience that high, and then we can bring it down, and then you do a mid-tempo after that. Um and and the rest in between is sort of spur of the moment. I don't really plan anything I'm going to say on stage. There are I I there are key points that I uh that I want to say in between the songs, but the main thing is do these songs thematically fit next to each other.
SPEAKER_00Well done. Again, I I say this all every time we have a musician on, but one of the best parts about having a podcast is you get to have these per personal live uh performances here, and this is no exception. So I I am so excited for this. What's the next song you're gonna do for us?
SPEAKER_05The next song is the first single off the EP. All I know. I love this song so much. Uh it was the first song we fully tracked, fully recorded on the EP, and there was a little time in between doing the others. Yeah. And so for like two months, I I would just sit in my car every day and listen to this song, and I'm like, oh my god, it's happening. This is it. You knew it. You knew it. I knew it. And then I gave it to people, and it was magical. It was uh we were talking about when people started singing the song back to me. Yeah, I'm like, oh my god, the people like it.
SPEAKER_00The entire room was belting out this this the these words on the end of your show. It was it's such a good it's such a good song. I'm so excited for you to perform it for us, so please take it away, Wes. Thanks, Andrew.
SPEAKER_03Found something simple in a complicated life, don't have a name for it, but I don't what feels right. Love shouldn't be something you're trying hard to keep, baby.
SPEAKER_00Oh my baby on another You came into my work Give me good feelin' good feeling baby on another came into my word Give me good feeling How to see Baby all anno is that I love you that that I love you, baby on an hour Yeah There you are standing a vision to my Ooh you got a little phone to cute and you like my phone too no need to compromise Come on come on I say Yes I know you like riding with me and I can't wait for the possibility to come true Yeah Let's take a chance and settle down It's gonna feel like going up and around the moon Goin' up going up Baby Oh K it's you have Kerfe Baby Oh King too Cave Give her feeling Baby All Give Give me Yeah You got a little funky there towards me I like that man God that song No matter how many times I hear that song I I I'm just I'm hooked it it just it just it's so catchy and it's so upbeat and you nailed you really did nail that song when you when you first came up with that song what was the was it did you start with the the melodies first or did you start with the lyrics or how did you start that?
SPEAKER_05You know, I really drew from the influences of the time for that song. I I studied uh a bunch of people. I I I'm like, what I I I told myself I want to make a song that Shaka Khan would sing. And then that's what it is. So I know shout out Shaka Khan. Shout out Shaka Khan, my girl up there with Stevie. Oh, her hair. This is one of her wigs that I that I borrowed. Um, I'd also like to say, thank you so much for having me on. I know I'm a uh you you went from I don't know who books this show. Oh, I Julie. You need to work on that because you went from uh Congresswoman Susie Lee to weird out Russell Brand impersonator on the strip. And so the hey big head show, times are tough here. So if you can donate to the link below so they can get better guests than me.
SPEAKER_00So we can eat and and uh you know have feed the children.
SPEAKER_05The uh governor governor candidate, uh oh my gosh, wow. Aaron Ford. Aaron Ford, yes, yeah, I do oh but you're so weird, Al Russell Brandt. Yes, yes. So they missed the the people are gonna be like, who do you have on? What's going on here?
SPEAKER_00You know, it's it I you know you say we're on the decline, I say we're on the incline. I because we we go from Congresswoman to potential governor to one and only West Meadows.
SPEAKER_05Wow, hopefully I can keep up the legendary run of the Haven.
SPEAKER_00Are you uh are you a fan of Rid Al?
SPEAKER_05You know what I should be more of. Uh-huh. I kind of have many characteristics. I mean, he's he doesn't take himself seriously. I don't take myself seriously. Um yeah, you know I'm fat. Oh, maybe I can't uh copyright. Copyright. Um, but I need to go see him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he just performed. He just had that that show here. A bunch of my friends went and I didn't win, but he was uh I grew up on Weird Al. I loved Weird Allen. You know, now that you said it, now I see it, but I I didn't I didn't see it before.
SPEAKER_05But Weird Al, Russell, Brand, Jesus. Those are the big three.
SPEAKER_00The Holy Trinity right there.
SPEAKER_05What more do you need in life?
SPEAKER_00I love it. Oh my god. Wes, this is so much fun. I am having way too much fun. I I I want you to do your next album release party here on the show. That's what I want. That's truly what I want.
SPEAKER_05I'll do it. I'll do the whole darn album. I'll do it in spoken word. And you can all get I'll sign it.
SPEAKER_00We'll get Shaka Khan, we'll get Stevie Wonder Hero. It'll be great.
SPEAKER_05Do we have that poll?
SPEAKER_00I feel like Julie's got that poll.
SPEAKER_05Well, I know Julie runs the show.
SPEAKER_00Julie does. Julie, she she really does run the show, and God bless Julie because Julie knows people. Julie knows people. Julie, see if we can get Weird Owl uh on the show, too, and we'll play in this performance. It's gotta be easier than Stevie Wonder. It's gotta be easier than Stevie Wonder. Well, I don't know. Listen, Weird Owl's pretty hot right now. We'll see.
SPEAKER_05I'll take a DNA test for Weird Owl.
SPEAKER_00I you know what? You may be long lost relative. Anything's possible. You never know. You got one more song you're gonna do for us. What are you gonna do for us, Wes?
SPEAKER_05One more song. Uh this is one of my most heartfelt songs. It's called Johnny Boy. Uh it's a it's a real one.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05The story of this song is, you know, it's a song born out of loss. Um I had the hook of this song in my head for an entire year. Um I it just kept coming to me. Johnny Boy, what you say? And I'm like, okay, Johnny. Chill.
SPEAKER_00Is there a Johnny boy?
SPEAKER_05There is a Johnny boy. So it's sort of born out of, it's a bit of a personal story. My um uh in my life, you know, I've I've taken care of a lot of people. I uh, you know, I had I had two grandmas that I love dearly who passed away in the in the last two years, and then and then my mom passed. Um my my biological grandma, she um she had seven kids, and uh uh all of them came out except for one before she passed. And that was that was uh you know, I'm not a resentful person, I just write a song about it. Um I I felt it and uh it's it's the love for my grandma, but also um the sorrow I feel for um people that don't get to say that goodbye. So that's what this song is born out of.
SPEAKER_00Beautiful Johnny boy, let's hear it.
SPEAKER_05Come on, Johnny.
SPEAKER_03Come home, Johnny. It's been a while since you called. Things are moving faster than expected. Not what we wanted, but all that matters now is if you're by mama's side on a way to heaven. Johnny boy, won't you see your mother again? It is the final time, my friend. Though it only hurts a little right now, you'll regret it in the end. Johnny Boy, it all comes too close. Where we go from there, heaven knows. Decision making time is happening. Johnny Boy, where have you been? Where have you been? Don't cry, Johnny, your tears are falling fast, already made your decisions, too busy working on a moment that'll pass. That's a burden you have to live with. Johnny won't see your mother again. Though it only hurts a little right now, you'll regret it in the end. Johnny Boy all comes too close where we go from there, heaven knows decision making time is happening. Johnny Boy, where have you won't see mother again? It's the final time, my friend. Though it only hurts a little. Right now, you'll regret it in the end. Johnny boy, it all comes too close. Where we go from there Decision making time is happening. Johnny Boy. Where have you been? Where have you been?
SPEAKER_00I gotta stand up. I gotta stand up for this one. That was fantastic one. There was a moment, I forgot I was on a podcast. I thought I was just rocking out. That was so good. You're so good. It's just I I looked at Julie, Julie was in the was in a moment, I was in a moment, like we were just West, that's such a beautiful song. Thank you. I'm so, so grateful for you to come on and share not only that story, but all the stories you share, because you are just fucking awesome, man. I I'm so excited to have you here on the show. And I'm honestly, I'm excited to have these performances uh part of the show too, because I can just play play them back over and over and over again that I do with all of my musical guests that we have on. God, that was beautiful.
SPEAKER_01I'm moving back to my mic so I can participate.
SPEAKER_00Yes, you're you're you're not on camera, but what do you want to say to Wes? Because I I have so many more things to say, but I feel like I'm hogging the mic.
SPEAKER_01Literally, I think at least once in every song you performed, me and him locked eyes, me and Andrew locked eyes, and I mouthed, what the F? Because I mean, obviously, we just saw you earlier this week, but every time I hear you, it's like the first time, like first time. It's just wild. The talent and skill that you have. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You you you really have something special going on, Wes. And uh I hope you I I know you see it, I know you feel it, and I know that other people do too. And I hope you just keep moving forward with it because I am excited to see the next chapter of Wes Meadow and his band and the music you you put out, man.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that means the world, you guys. I'm I'm really trying to make it happen. I I just want to spread a little kindness and joy and love. And uh I'm I've been telling people this was the beta version. We're heading into 1.0. That's what we're heading into.
SPEAKER_01If this is beta, I can't imagine where it's going. Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_00I'm excited for 1.0, 2.0, yeah, all of the point oh. Not at all.
SPEAKER_05I'm I'm grateful you had me on. Of course, man. This was such a joy. This was so much fun. Oh, the coming soon.
SPEAKER_00Yes. That's what I love the Where can people find more West Meadow in their life?
SPEAKER_05Where can you find more? Um, you can follow me at West Meadows Music on uh all the platforms, you know, Facebook, TikTok. Uh if you got MySpace, I'm gonna friend you there. I'm gonna meet you where you're at.
SPEAKER_00Uh you're in my top eight on MySpace, West Meadows. I hope you know this. I hope you know this. Yeah, you're my guy. Uh I know. I like it. I just love you. We got a thing going on. I love it.
SPEAKER_05Club Penguin, do you get that reference?
SPEAKER_01I literally was playing Club Penguin last night.
SPEAKER_05You oh no.
SPEAKER_00I don't understand her.
SPEAKER_01We'll play together.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes she gets the references, sometimes she doesn't.
SPEAKER_01What about Toontown? Toontown. That's back as well. Get on online later tonight, Wes.
SPEAKER_05At Julie and I on Club Penguin and Toontown and Pop Tropica. Yes. We just the they've left. The audience has left. What the hell's going on there? No, no, no. You can find me there. You can find me on my website, Wesmeadowsmusic.com. And I play every weekend in Vegas at a bar called 1923 Prohibition Bar. It's inside the Venetian. We have a fun, fun time. I'm I'm doing covers. I'm funking them up. I'm giving a little soul spin to them. Getting funky with it. Yeah, I hope I uh And come out to see me perform one of these days. Yes.
SPEAKER_00So when you perform, do you do covers or uh originals or a mix of both? I do a mix of both.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. I do whatever the the people want. Like I'm I do a lot of requests. I'm just like I'm when it's just me at the piano, guys. Pick my set list. Like you tell me what you want to hear, and I will provide that.
SPEAKER_00Can you give me like 30 minutes or 30 minutes? Yeah, 30 minutes of performances. Can you give me 30 seconds of Michael McDonald's?
SPEAKER_05I got you. Okay, now copyright. That's okay. I'm gonna give you 30 seconds of Michael McDonald doing funky cat. Please do. Yes. I love that. Unplanned. Oh shoot. Oh no. He might sue.
SPEAKER_01He might sue. In impression, you cannot sue over it.
SPEAKER_00If he sues, well, we'll have him on the show and tell him why he ask him why he's suing us.
SPEAKER_05Please, if I might also be his child, too. Goes in the news.
SPEAKER_04Alright. I need to get he came from somewhere. Okay. How my fucking cat living in a dog's world. Howmafucky cat. Tryna make it work now. He came from somewhere back in a long ago. Sit a motherfuck. That's what a fool believes. Okay. Michael, say you I never fitted with the dogs. They got too much buck. Boom, and then it comes share. Ho, birds are fun. I'm already a bitch flying over the place. Bunny hop and sounds a real cute to hop right off the cliff. I keep to myself, hope none the dog is get a whiff. Funky cat. Funky cat.
SPEAKER_01Love it. I that love it.
SPEAKER_00I I'm such a big Michael McDonald fan. So when you did that at the show the other day, I was so thrilled. And then you you mixed you once you said share, then I couldn't unhear share.
SPEAKER_05I know it's the it's a problem. Well, I I'm obsessed with Michael McDonald. And it's honestly, it's probably Michael and Stevie. A lot of the chord changes, Clementine, uh, the the first song I did was born out of that yacht rock doobie brothers, Steely Dan. Because they they're doing all the so I I I and that's having a note in the bass that isn't usually in the chord, and then you go down. Yeah. Wow. I I I love some doobie uh and the brothers too.
SPEAKER_01What about doobie with the doobie brothers? Oh that would be something better than Snoop Dogg, actually. I think so too. That's it's the dream rotation. Yeah.
