106 - How This Law Firm Partner Went from Exhausted Technician to Thriving Business Owner
Rob started his first firm shortly after he qualified when he was 28 and, as one of his then partners commented, they “had all the confidence of ignorance”. In 2006, Rob set up the first iteration of the Atkins Dellow business with Graham Atkins, his very good friend from law school. They operated under the umbrella of Atkins, with Graham offering boutique media and libel services and Rob focusing on company, commercial and property. That business has evolved into Atkins Dellow LLP, now a fairly ‘full service’ firm with 78 team members, five offices across Suffolk and one in South Kensington. The firm has nearly quadrupled in size in the last four years.
In this episode, we speak about how Robert had got to a point where, in his fifties, he was a successful but exhausted partner of his firm and how he finally removed himself from most operations and now enjoys significant profits while having a life at the same time!
Rob read many books about business management and personal development. He understood many theories but finds it frustrating that it’s taken him to this point as a law firm partner to implement some of the crucial tenets of being a business owner.
He made the classic mistake of creating a job for himself, working in the business, with many clients as his bosses. He advises finding someone else to manage the business for you, as it should be managed.
Also, to gain clarity of purpose and goals, differentiation, being adequately funded, and understanding management and delegation is crucial.
He also advises getting the external perspective of a coach or mentor and being prepared to be held accountable.
