cosmological claims and questions. 00:03:52.319 --> 00:04:00.960 And then the personal hope, which we certainly have seen here in the book of Genesis, that human life has a design with meaning and look at everybody else and changes the way I think about myself. 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:40.240 And as I look at everybody else and as I think about everybody else, this eliminates, when I think of them as created in the image of God, it eliminates any opportunity for any sort of mischief to creep into my thinking, like that I'm better than someone else. 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:48.560 Or that someone else, because of the color of their skin or their lot in life, or the nation that they were born in, is somehow or another lesser. 00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:59.680 And so you can see that we now have a theological basis for the elimination, and there's just no room for some of the biggest problems we have in this world right now. 00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:03.120 There's just no room for those if lots of purpose, uh, lots of hope, lots of meaning there. 00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:30.879 Uh, God has done something about what is wrong in the world, and and the book of Genesis begins to explain that God is offering us. 00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:57.839 So Genesis is a book of beginnings, it's a book of real life stories, real people, uh, walking through the kinds of things we walk through in studied this book together with uh with you. 00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:34.560 So let's take a look then at these last three chapters as we come up on it. 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:47.759 What we have just uh finished studying is how the Lord has arranged in this famine throughout the land, this seven-year famine, the Lord God has arranged for Joseph to be in a place called Egypt. 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:56.800 And God has given Joseph favor with all the authorities in Egypt, and he's literally uh the VP in Egypt at this point. 00:06:56.879 --> 00:06:59.680 He's the vice pharaoh of Egypt. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:12.639 And he's he's he's he's a great manager, and he has literally been used by God to not only save his own family as they moved to Egypt, but he's literally saved the Egyptians. 00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:23.279 He's literally saved a lot of the world through the wisdom that God has given him in terms of uh storing up grain, being able to distribute it and manage it and all of that sort of thing. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:25.279 He's really brilliant in so many ways. 00:07:25.360 --> 00:07:40.240 But his family has now moved down there, including his brothers who we read about early on, uh, hated him so much when he when Joseph lived back up in the land of Canaan, hated him so much that at 17 years of age they threw him in a pit. 00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:42.240 They were gonna leave him for dead. 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:51.120 Instead, they sold him to some Ishmaelite travelers that were coming through, and they knew he would be carried into slavery and bondage and probably never see him again. 00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:59.199 And and for for 22 years, he's down there with no conversation with his family, and he's literally a slave in the household of Potiphar. 00:07:59.279 --> 00:08:04.319 He rises in the household of Potiphar because of the wisdom and the Lord being with him. 00:08:04.399 --> 00:08:08.560 We're told that over and over again in the book of Genesis, that God was with Joseph. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:14.560 It's really an interesting, powerful distinction that God was with him so much. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:20.319 And he rose to a great uh uh position in Potiphar's household. 00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:24.079 But then Potiphar's wife tried to have an affair with Joseph. 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:28.319 He resisted, um, but yet was thrown in jail because she accused him anyway. 00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:30.480 So he's falsely accused, thrown in jail. 00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:43.679 The Lord comes along, gives him the ability to interpret some dreams for the for the baker and and and and uh um and the uh cupbearer of the Pharaoh, and it's just fascinating how you see these sequences go. 00:08:43.919 --> 00:08:47.360 And it leads to him actually being brought into Pharaoh's household. 00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:52.480 So from the pit to the palace, to the prison, and back to the palace again. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:54.559 His life going up and down like this. 00:08:54.720 --> 00:08:56.320 Does your life go up and down like that? 00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:56.799 Yeah. 00:08:56.960 --> 00:09:01.039 But the Lord was with Joseph, we're being told over and over again. 00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:14.799 And here, when we come to chapters 48, 49, and 50, we're gonna see not only the death of Jacob, his father, long-lost father, hadn't seen for 22 years, and now he's now Jacob and the and the other brothers have moved to Egypt. 00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:29.679 Joseph has been forgiving toward them, and he's actually arranged for them to live in the land of Goshen, the best of the land in Egypt, and to bring their flocks and their herds and be able to survive there, not only survive, but to thrive there. 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:31.120 It's really amazing. 00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:42.399 It came about, verse 1 says of 48, after these things, remember, they've been there, uh, let's see, they moved and have been in Egypt now for 17 years. 00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:45.679 Jacob, the brothers, have been there for 17 years. 00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:50.960 So Joseph's probably 56 years old at this point in time. 00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:55.519 And after these things, Joseph was told, Behold, your father is sick. 00:09:55.679 --> 00:10:01.039 So Jacob is now sick after living in Egypt for 17 years. 00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:04.639 He's gonna die at the age of 147 years. 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:07.440 Okay, and we'll see that, we'll read that in just a minute. 00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:13.279 But Joseph gets told that Jacob is sick, so he took his sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, with him. 00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:20.320 And remember, Joseph had these two sons with uh his wife Azenath, who is an Egyptian. 00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:29.360 And so it's interesting that these two who become namesakes of some of the tribes of Israel later, um, are actually of mixed race, all right? 00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:31.279 So Manasseh and Ephraim come with him. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:34.639 When it was told to Jacob, behold, your son Joseph has come to you. 00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:36.960 Israel collected his strength, sat up in the bed. 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:37.600 You can see this. 00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:51.840 I love the live-body detail of this, scooching up, pulling his pillows up behind him, arranging his, you know, his duvet cover, uh, whatever, whatever it was, and getting just getting himself set so he can actually talk with Joseph. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:59.840 And Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Laz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:09.840 And he said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, I will make you a company of peoples, I will give you this land to your descendants, to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:15.679 That's really amazing, that that's what he's gonna drive home, those promises of God. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.240 And it's so important that we pass those promises along. 00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:34.480 It's so important that as we sing about God, as we as we sing about, as we sing scriptures, as we express ourselves to God, that we also remember to be mindful to pass these promises that God has made. 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:39.919 Because really, this book, this library of books right here is all about the promises of God. 00:11:40.080 --> 00:11:51.120 He's been in pursuit of a people he can call his own, and he has made very specific and certain promises that he intends to fulfill. 00:11:51.600 --> 00:12:01.120 And so Jacob passes that along to Joseph and tells him that God himself appeared to him and was in the land of Canaan, blessed be. 00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:05.200 And he said to me, All of this, he's getting the progeny and the place or the land. 00:12:05.360 --> 00:12:10.240 Now to your two sons, verse five, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, they are mine. 00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:13.759 In other words, I'm gonna view Ephraim and Manasseh as my descendants. Joseph, he's already told Joseph, hey, Ephraim and Manasseh, so he already knows their names, but when they step up, it's almost as if he has a little brain kind of a you know freeze thing happen, right? 00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:46.000 Who are these? 00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:46.559 Verse 9. 00:13:46.720 --> 00:13:50.320 Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God has given me here. 00:13:50.559 --> 00:13:53.360 So he said, Bring them to me, please that I may bless them. 00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:58.399 Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. 00:13:59.200 laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, crossing his hands. 00:15:09.679 --> 00:15:12.320 Although Manasseh was the firstborn. 00:15:12.399 --> one, and yet God spoke to Jacob and passed the promise to Jacob, and it was through Jacob's line that Israel, the nation, would be born, and that Messiah would actually come. 00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:35.840 God has that right. 00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:41.519 Um, God is sovereign, it's his creation, every bit of it. 00:15:41.840 --> 00:15:48.639 So the divine prerogative, we we read about that --> 00:16:01.200 And he blessed Joseph and he said, The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked, the God who has been my shepherd. 00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:02.320 And I love that. And this God will be with you, that runs throughout Genesis, or throughout the Joseph narrative in Genesis, is said one more time, and we're reminded of that. 00:17:54.640 --> 00:17:58.400 The presence of the Lord at work in Joseph's life. 00:17:58.480 --> 00:18:08.799 It's interesting because nowhere do we find God speaking to Joseph in the Joseph narrative, like he did, like God spoke to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:18:09.039 --> 00:18:17.039 So if you're here today and you're wondering, well, I don't ever have any of those big supernatural experiences where God speaks to me, you're will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers, which is an interesting thing to say in Egypt when you're about to die and the famine is in the land. 00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:51.839 He
