Heinlein said, a family reunion is an effective form of birth control. 00:03:11.840 --> 00:03:12.639 So true. 00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:23.199 So, okay, seriously, families at their best, you know, loving, supportive, caring, awkward, life-giving, intimate. 00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:31.360 But we're gonna see in our chapters today they can also be full of, gosh, lies and hurt and anger and trauma. 00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:53.039 And we're gonna see today how God is using events and circumstances to bring about an unexpected reunion between Joseph and his ten older brothers that sold him into slavery, a reunion that has far-reaching implications for the covenant that God has promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:02.319 We'll see how on Joseph's part, a faith and a trust in God paves the way for forgiveness and reconciliation. 00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:13.919 Uh and I particularly love this passage because, man, I think it shows us a picture of our sinfulness and left. 00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:48.079 And it looked good on paper when we were planning this out, because we really do plan this out, but now I'm like, you know, you remember as a kid when you're learning how to write, you start writing a sentence at the beginning of the sentence, the letters are really big, and then they progressively get smaller and smaller and smaller. 00:04:48.319 --> 00:04:50.160 Okay, so that's kind of what's going on here. 00:04:50.240 --> 00:04:52.480 We've got a lot of ground to cover, but we'll do it. 00:04:52.639 --> 00:05:09.279 Um so this unexpected reunion in today's passage, it's preparing us for the epic conclusion to this story that's gonna lead to the creation of the nation Israel and the salvation and redemption of Israel. 00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:28.720 And to set the stage from last week's passage that Tommy taught us through, remember that Joseph has correctly interpreted these dreams that Pharaoh had that are predicting the seven years of plenty and then the seven years of famine that lie ahead for Egypt and all of the Middle East. 00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:42.480 Pharaoh's wisely appointed Joseph to administer the preparations for this famine, and he's made Pharaoh second in command only to himself, vice Pharaoh, if you would call it. 00:05:42.560 --> 00:05:57.439 And some commentaries have suggested that Joseph is almost a physical savior, if you will, of Egypt and this area of the Middle East because God used him to prepare for the famine. 00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:04.000 So he was able to provide food for that area of the Middle East. 00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:06.399 Famines are often reported in the Bible. 00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:07.680 We see it frequently. 00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:10.079 We've already seen several in Genesis. 00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:20.240 Um if you think about it, that part of the Middle East, it's so arid that even a small season of drought can have dire consequences. 00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:34.160 Egypt typically doesn't share in that so much, especially Upper Egypt, where Joseph lived, because of their proximity to the Nile River and that fertile delta around the Nile. 00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:39.600 But as we'll see in this couple of chapters, the famine reaches even Egypt. 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:46.319 And think about the Dust Bowl, you know, the drought of the 1930s that led to the Dust Bowl in the Great Plains. 00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:49.120 And then I was thinking too, I don't know if any of you remember this. 00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:56.800 In 2007, we had a heat wave and a drought in the summer, and it didn't last very long, but it was miserable. 00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:06.000 And I can remember the feed store where we buy hay and feed for our animals, the drought was so bad that they were bringing in hay from as far away as Canada. 00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:09.360 And that was just a couple of couple of months that it lasted. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:18.079 Um so you can see how this the famine in in Egypt might have had a lot more uh dire consequences. 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:23.680 So there's a few things I'd like you to keep in mind as we read through the chapters. 00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:31.759 Uh, the process of forgiveness and reconciliation can take time, but we're seeing this taking place in the narrative. 00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:41.279 Uh so pay attention to the changes in the brothers, especially Reuben and Judah, are starting to kind of turn and grow in their character. 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:45.199 There's three different camera angles that we're going to be looking at. 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:54.720 We're going to view these circumstances, past and present, through the camera lens of Joseph, the ten elder to know. 00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:08.240 Uh, Joseph's brothers go to Egypt. 00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:14.799 When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, Why do you look at one another? 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:19.679 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.240 Go down and buy grain for us there that we may live and not die. 00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:30.559 Think back to early 2020 when we couldn't find toilet paper and paper towel. 00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:35.360 And you know, you'd see on Facebook, hey, Publix at Cool Springs has toilet paper. 00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:37.279 So that's what's kind of going on here. 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:50.960 Um, so ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt, but Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him. 00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:57.279 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 00:09:57.440 --> 00:10:01.360 So a lot of people are going to Egypt to buy grain and food. 00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:04.960 Now Joseph was governor over the land. 00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:08.879 He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:16.159 And Joseph's brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. 00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:19.679 Remember that from Joseph's dreams when he was a teenager? 00:10:21.679 --> 00:10:28.879 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:30.240 Where do you come from? 00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:30.960 He said. 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:33.919 They said, from the land of Canaan to buy food. 00:10:34.080 --> 00:10:35.519 And here's the repetition. 00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:40.960 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:45.919 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. 00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:55.519 When Joseph got up to go to work that morning, he had no idea he was going to be reunited with his brothers. 00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:57.519 Tommy talked about this last week. 00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:01.679 It's not like these guys had Genesis to refer to, right? 00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:04.080 They're living this in real time. 00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:15.039 And here Joseph is flooded with memories of his dreams, of what's been going on, you know, what happened with his brothers. 00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:21.600 And he had been at a place of intentionally putting that behind him. 00:11:22.240 --> 00:11:32.159 At the closing of chapter 41, where his sons Manasseh and Ephraim were born, the name Manasseh means God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father's house. 00:11:32.320 --> 00:11:37.759 The name Ephraim means God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:45.200 So he had been at a place of being able to leave things in the past and move forward, trusting in the Lord. 00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:55.440 And it's that faith that is propping him up at this moment when he's faced with this unexpected reunion of his brothers. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:12:01.919 So he said to them, verse 9, You are spies, you have come to see the nakedness of the land. 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:05.759 And they said to him, No, my Lord, your servants have come to buy food. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.919 We are all sons of one man, we are honest men. 00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:13.519 Your servants have never been spies. 00:12:13.679 --> 00:12:18.000 And he said to them, No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see. 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:24.639 And they said, We your servants, our twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. 00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:30.159 And behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more. 00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:41.919 So it's been twenty years, and they are still maintaining this lie, this story that they made up, that Joseph got killed by a wild animal. 00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:48.080 They're progressively having to maintain this lie their whole adult life. 00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:53.120 And they don't know Joseph, but Joseph knows them, right? 00:12:53.279 --> 00:12:55.519 So he knows that they're lying. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:59.919 Joseph said to them, It is as I said to you, you are spies. 00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:02.320 By this you shall be tested. 00:13:02.559 --> 00:13:08.559 By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your younger, youngest brother comes here. 00:13:08.799 --> 00:13:17.440 Send one of you and you've got to think that maybe Joseph is wondering, Well, did they kill Benjamin too? 00:13:57.039 --> 00:13:59.200 So he's wanting proof of life. 00:14:00.960 --> 00:14:08.799 Verse 21, then they said to one another, In truth we are guilty concerning our brother. 00:14:09.519 --> 00:14:18.080 In truth, we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he begged us and we did not listen. 00:14:18.320 --> 00:14:21.120 That is why this distress has come upon us. 00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:25.679 And Reuben answered them, Did I not tell you not to sin against the freely in front of Joseph because they have no idea that he speaks Hebrew. 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:53.519 They think he's Egyptian. 00:14:54.320 --> 00:15:00.480 So, verse 23, they did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them. 00:15:00.639 --> 00:15:05.600 Then he turned away from them and wept, and he returned to them and spoke to them. 00:15:05.759 --> 00:15:13.759 And gosh, what's going through his mind when he finally hears them confess to what they had done? 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:18.080 And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:26.320 And you've got to think, was he thinking about when he was bound and sold to the Ishmaelites when he's binding Simeon? 00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:33.919 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to replace every man's money in his sack and to give them provisions for the journey. 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:36.000 This was done for them. 00:15:37.360 --> 00:15:40.480 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:50.399 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, it's about 250 miles from Hebron to Egypt, would have probably taken them like 10 days to two weeks. 00:15:50.480 --> 00:15:53.279 So they're going to stop probably every night. 00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:55.840 every event that happens to them, they're interpreting as some form of judgment. 00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:47.360 Verse 29, when they came to Jacob, their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, Here's some more repetition. 00:16:47.519 --> 00:16:52.799 The man, the Lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. 00:16:52.960 --> 00:16:55.759 But we said to him, We are honest men. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:57.440 We have never been spies. 00:16:57.519 --> 00:17:05.759 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father, one is no more, know, if if we consider that, let's just say that that sin casts a blue tint, a blue shade on us, every one of us has a little bit of blue in our skin color, right? 00:29:49.839 --> 00:29:52.400 The Joseph was ripped from his family, ripped from his home. 00:30:15.759 --> 00:30:17.519 He was sold into slavery. 00:30:17.680 --> 00:30:36.799 And then he endured this up and down process for 20 years of being in the pit, being in a palace, being thrown in prison, back to the palace, and his faith and his integrity in this whole process are remarkable, but he's been the victim in this of this trauma. 00:30:37.519 --> 00:30:43.200 And then the 10 brothers, they they have had to live this lie for the last 20 years. 00:30:43.359 --> 00:30:48.480 This has become the prominent narrative of their lives. 00:30:48.960 --> 00:31:10.079 It's this lie of a tragic death of their father's favorite son, and then they've had to maintain that lie for 20 years, and they've had to deal with Jacob's unassuageable grief and his unrelenting shame and guilt directed at them for how could they have let his son get ripped apart by a wild animal? 00:31:10.240 --> 00:31:21.279 And then Jacob himself, he's lived a narrative for the last 20 years of a grieving husband and son and father who lost his favorite son. 00:31:21.440 --> 00:31:24.319 He's been refused to be comforted. 00:31:24.799 --> 00:31:29.680 He's cling, clinging, has clinged to Benjamin as a result of this. 00:31:29.839 --> 00:31:35.599 And the story might have been false, but the result and the grief are real. 00:31:35.920 00:32:03.359 --> 00:32:16.880 So I think there's a chance that many, if not all of us today, we can identify, right, with each of those three people at some point in our lives, because at some point it, we may have covered it up, but at some point we've been the ten brothers. 00:32:28.079 --> 00:32:41.440 And at some point, undoubtedly, we've been in Joseph's shoes, hurt by someone else, accidentally or on purpose, and we've had to carry the weight of that hurt with us. 00:32:42.400 --> 00:32:48.400 Or like Jacob, we might have been stuck in an emotional pit. 00:32:48.720 --> 00:32:58.640 It's not his fault, but stuck in an emotional pit, and there's been a single event or trauma that has been controlling our lives. 00:33:01.039 --> 00:33:04.880 So, if this is the bad instead, he chose to treat them far better than their sins deserved. 00:33:48.720 --> 00:33:56.160 And that laid the groundwork for the sweet forgiveness and reconciliation that we're going to see in highway, how depersonalized things are, and how we are losing this idea of reconciliation and relationship because it's so easy to blast somebody in anger and untruth when you're not in relationship
