00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:28.320 Here it is on the screen. 00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:32.240 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:35.439 What a great way to open up the Bible. 00:00:35.600 --> 00:00:55.200 Those words read by astronauts on their way back from the moon, those words have echoed down through the centuries and kind of divides people because there are some people that don't think that the universe had a beginning or that there's such a being as God or a creator. 00:00:56.399 --> 00:01:13.599 But we find that the Bible begins to answer all of the really big questions of life right there in verse 1, the very first verse, and from Genesis all the way through to Revelation, the story is of a God who's in pursuit of a people he can call his own. 00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:25.760 And if you're here and you're reading through and studying through Genesis with us, as well as the other books of the Bible that we've uh studied, uh you know, you sense that he's been calling you. 00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:30.000 You sense as well this hunger and this longing to know your creator. 00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:31.920 So where did everything come from? how do we tell the difference between right and wrong? 00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:53.680 Is this world going somewhere, or is it just fade to black and disappear? 00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:57.280 Uh these are great questions that have been asked for a long, long time. 00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:00.640 And I love it that our Bible begins to help us with all of those. 00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:11.360 Now we're gonna read a text that describes uh today, anyway, that describes some of the generations from Adam down through a person named Noah that most of you have probably heard of. 00:02:11.520 --> 00:02:16.639 And uh this will be uh filled with some uh of what they call a genealogical record. 00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:20.560 There are ten different names, ten different fathers that we'll read about here. 00:02:20.719 --> 00:02:26.719 And uh some of the stories are just really amazing and fantastic, although we're not told a lot about a lot of them. 00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:51.199 But I just want to remind you that when we read a text like this, as old as it is, and if Moses indeed is the author of much of the book of uh Genesis, uh, we should expect, uh, just as old as it is, with all the gaps that we've got to jump to understand it here in our, you know, sort of modern contemporary world, uh contemporary that is of this time and this day, we should expect to struggle a little bit. 00:02:51.280 --> 00:03:05.120 Uh there are gonna be some cultural issues, there are gonna be some uh uh time gaps, there's gonna be some references that are gonna sound strange and wild to us, and that's okay, that's normal when we're reading literature that's this old. 00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:14.879 Um, as well, I think we should uh be prepared as we read it to understand what Jesus thought of the Old Testament. 00:03:15.199 --> 00:03:18.639 Not only did he quote it often, but he believed every bit of it. 00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:24.639 And I'm even gonna tell you that in John's Gospel, Jesus himself is called the Word. 00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:30.639 John's Gospel opens up within the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:38.479 And John goes on, John, one of Jesus' closest friends, goes on to describe Jesus as the living word of God. 00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:44.960 And so I side with Jesus on his view of Genesis and the rest of the Old Testament as well. 00:03:45.199 --> 00:04:03.039 Um, and then I think we also, when we approach a text like this, we not only should struggle with some of it just because of all the gaps, and not only should we consider it the way Jesus considered it, but I think I think as we read it, we ought to decide that we're gonna let God be God in this book as we study this book. 00:04:03.199 --> 00:04:15.360 That is, if God is doing things like creating everything out of nothing, then all of the rest of the miraculous deeds of God that we'll read about throughout the Bible actually are just a cakewalk for him. 00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:18.399 There's no big deal to him at all. 00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:31.920 So he who created everything out of nothing, he who formed the stars and the universe and set them all in place and uh designed you and designed me, fearfully and wonderfully made, as we're told in the book of Psalms. 00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:37.279 That if that one is the he's the only one really qualified to be God, right? 00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:46.480 So let's go to Genesis chapter five and see what we can learn here as we study the lineage or the descendants of uh Adam. 00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:47.199 Here it goes. 00:04:47.279 --> 00:04:49.839 This is the book of the generations of Adam. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:56.079 Verse 1, chapter 5 says, In the day when God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 00:04:56.160 --> 00:05:00.720 Now we've been told that before, but he's driving it home over and over again. 00:05:00.800 --> 00:05:04.079 Sometimes I need to be told something more than once to really let it sink in. 00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:05.839 I don't know if you're that way or not. 00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:20.399 But in the world in which we live right now, um we're real quickly told that you are, I, we're each our own little g God, and we can create our own selves and design our own selves the way that we want to. 00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:25.279 We're ultimately the ones with the last word, the first word and the last word, actually. 00:05:25.439 --> 00:05:27.360 Um, but I don't think that's true. 00:05:27.439 --> 00:05:29.120 I that has not proven to be true. 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:37.600 I saw a church sign uh here in Nashville uh this week uh that said, looking into myself is where I'll find the true answers. 00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:40.160 And I don't think the Bible agrees with that at all. 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:44.959 And I know I don't agree with that because I look into myself and I see all kinds of crazy stuff. 00:05:45.120 --> 00:06:06.800 So I need outside help, I need redemption, I need rescue, and I'm so glad there's a God who isn't me and isn't you, and has uh set his love on me and has decided to call me uh to be in relationship with him, and he's I hope calling you uh as well, and that you'll respond to him. 00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:07.680 But here he is. 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:12.639 This is the book of the generations of Adam in the day that God created man. 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:15.439 He made him in the likeness of God. 00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:21.759 So there we have that Imago Day, the image of God, such a beautiful, unique thing about human persons. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:28.639 He created the male and female, and he blessed them, and he named them man or Adam. 00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:38.160 And so Adam is not only the personal name of the first male, but Adam is actually uh the it's humankind. 00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:44.079 It's the uh it's the kind of uh being that male and female both are. 00:06:44.319 --> 00:06:48.560 And so he named them man in the day when they were created. 00:06:49.199 --> 00:06:58.319 And when Adam had lived 130 years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness according to his image, and named him Seth. 00:06:58.399 --> 00:07:07.759 Now he's already had, he and Eve have together already had Cain and Abel, and we studied that passage last week, and Abel has now died at the hands of Cain. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:17.839 But Seth has come along, as we studied in the end of chapter four, and we were told at the end of chapter four uh that Seth also had a son. 00:07:18.079 --> 00:07:20.240 His name was uh Enosh. 00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:24.319 And then we were told that that beautiful last line of chapter four that I just love. 00:07:24.639 --> 00:07:28.399 Uh, then men began to call upon the name of the Lord. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:53.120 And this is when uh a great turning point happens, and even though humanity has fallen into sin and begun to unravel in a lot of ways, through the line of Seth will come, and Seth's name means appointed, through the line of Seth will come the true, the ultimate appointed one, Messiah, Jesus himself, God's Redeemer, the one who's come to rescue us from uh the our sin. 00:07:53.199 --> 00:07:58.800 And this is just a wonderful bit of good news that goes all the way back to the book of Genesis, like we said. 00:07:58.959 --> 00:08:06.079 So when Adam had lived 130 years, that's when he fathered Seth according to his image, and he named him Seth. 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:12.399 Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:16.160 And so, uh, how many other sons and daughters did Adam and Eve have? 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:19.759 Could not tell you that wasn't what was kept in the record here. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.079 Just that they had other sons and daughters, that's told to us. 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:24.959 And that's great. 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:57.279 If Adam and Eve are sort of the fountainhead of humanity, if uh they are the uh uniquely uh created by fiat design, you know, fiat creation as God just spoke and uh created the universe, created everything that exists, including creating humanity, uh scooped up the dust of the earth and created the first and formed the first human being, breathed life into them, uh, took the rib from Adam, uh, created and fashioned this beautiful um um uh partner for Adam, and Adam, her partner as well. 00:08:57.360 --> 00:09:01.200 And there they are together, the first couple having the first children. 00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:03.279 And it's just a fountain head of humanity. 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:04.879 It's a great story, isn't it? 00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:11.440 But here he's gonna live, it says, literally uh 800 years. 00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:15.840 The days of Adam were after he uh became the father of Seth. 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:17.039 And he had other sons and daughters. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:17.600 Verse 5. 00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:22.080 So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years and he died. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.960 930 years, folks, that's a long time. 00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:26.480 Um Wow. 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:32.799 I mean, we'll talk about that in a little bit because there's some other astonishing numbers that we'll read about in this chapter as well. 00:09:33.440 --> 00:09:37.440 Seth lived 105 years and he became the father of Enosh. 00:09:37.840 --> 00:09:44.080 Seth lived 807 years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:55.279 All right, so this is a pattern that the writer of Genesis is going to use here, at least in chapter five, as we go through these uh this record of generations. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:10:01.440 Um verse eight, so all the days of Seth were 912 years and he died. 00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:05.840 And Enosh lived 90 years and became the father of Canaan. 00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:10.080 So he started having children early, you know, at 90 years, okay? 00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:15.679 And uh, whereas, you know, Adam had Seth when he was like 130, I think we just read. 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:24.000 Um, and then Seth had Enosh uh when he had been already 105 years old. 00:10:24.240 --> 00:10:30.320 So here's here's old Enosh, you know, having a kid at uh literally 90 years of age. 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:32.080 He becomes the father of Kenan. 00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:32.960 That's really powerful. 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:34.240 All right, verse 10. 00:10:34.399 --> 00:10:40.399 Then Enosh lived 815 years after he became the father of Canaan, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:44.879 So all the days of Enosh were 905 years and he died. 00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:50.480 And Kenan lived 70 years and he became the father of Mahalalel. 00:10:50.960 --> 00:11:03.200 Then Kenan lived 840 years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters, and all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died. 00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:07.840 Mahalalel lived 65 years and became the father of Jared. 00:11:08.159 --> 00:11:14.879 Then Mahalalel lived 830 years after he had become the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:11:15.039 --> 00:11:19.759 So all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years and he died. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:21.200 Are you tracking with me on this? 00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:21.919 This is amazing. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:28.639 You watch the numbers, and they kind of fluctuate a little bit, undial a little bit, and I think that's telling us something, which we'll point out a little bit. 00:11:28.799 --> 00:11:32.639 But Jared lived 162 years and became the father of Enoch. 00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:37.519 Then Jared lived 800 years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:38.480 Verse 20. 00:11:38.720 --> 00:11:44.320 So all the days of Jared were 962 years and he died. 00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:48.320 Now something different is gonna happen next. 00:11:48.559 --> 00:11:52.320 Uh, with the uh uh uh appearance of Enoch. 00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:55.519 Uh, this pattern that we've been seeing is gonna be broken a little bit. 00:11:55.600 --> 00:11:56.159 Watch this. 00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:57.360 Verse 21. 00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:01.919 And Enoch lived 65 years and became the father of Methuselah. 00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:13.440 Then Enoch walked with God, that's interesting, 300 years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:23.039 So all the days of Enoch were 365 years, and then verse 24 says, And Enoch walked with God, and he was not. 00:12:24.399 --> 00:12:26.480 For God took him. 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:27.519 Wow. 00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:32.639 Now that's a very unique thing to be said by anybody. 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:39.200 He didn't experience physical death, God took him, which is amazing when you think about it. 00:13:00.720 That's one of the big ones. 00:13:01.759 --> 00:13:05.519 And the Bible says, no, it's not. 00:13:05.759 --> 00:13:18.320 And here we have in this first kind of you know pretty serious genealogy, a reiteration of that fact, that he walked with God, and he lived for a certain number of years, and then God took him. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:20.720 And so this is really awesome, right? 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:25.759 All the days of Enoch, 365 years, he walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. 00:13:25.840 --> 00:13:32.240 Verse 25, Methuselah lived 187 years and became the father of Lamech. 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:38.080 And this isn't the same Lamech that we learned about in chapter four, which was a descendant of Cain. 00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:40.720 This one is a descendant of Seth. 00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:47.039 Just like now, we will have many friends that have the same name, first name. 00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:50.159 And uh here, this is just two different guys named Lemech. 00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:52.000 It's interesting to contrast them. 00:13:52.960 --> 00:13:58.080 Seemed like the one in chapter four was given to arrogance and threats. 00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:04.879 And it'll seem like this one here in chapter five, completely different spiritual dynamic going on in his life. 00:14:05.759 --> 00:14:08.960 Let me read it for you here instead of just telling you. 00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:29.600 So uh Methuselah, who lived 800 and uh uh 782 years after he became the father of Lamech, uh, and he had other sons and daughters all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he'll be the oldest recorded, you know, human person uh in the Bible. 00:14:29.679 --> 00:14:32.320 Uh 969 years. 00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:35.519 That's a that's a long time, and then he died. 00:14:36.320 --> 00:14:44.559 And uh so for Methuselah, you know, his midlife crisis didn't hit till like man, like 620 or something. 00:14:45.039 --> 00:14:47.519 And uh, you know, just think about this. 00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:53.679 This is an amazing thing for this kind of stretch of time to be on the planet. 00:14:54.159 --> 00:14:56.480 And but remember a different planet back then. 00:14:56.639 --> 00:15:09.039 And uh if you just try to imagine that a little bit, and and and how how clean, how pure everything was, how the air, how the the water, how the the land, everything different, quite different back then. 00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:21.440 Um and the Hebrews, the Israelites, not the only ones from the ancient Near East uh to have a record kept that describes persons living this long. 00:15:21.600 --> 00:15:24.399 As a matter of fact, we'll read about that in just a little bit too. 00:15:24.480 --> 00:15:30.799 I'll show you some some writings uh from the ancient Near East a little bit, but watch this. 00:15:31.120 --> 00:15:34.159 So Methuselah, 969 years, and then he died. 00:15:34.240 --> 00:15:39.440 Verse 28, Lamech lived 182 years and became the father of a son. 00:15:39.600 --> 00:15:40.799 Oh, I love this. 00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:48.240 And now he called his name Noah, saying, and see, we get a little more about Lamech than we have these other ones, right? 00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:57.360 Saying, This one shall give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground, which the Lord has cursed. 00:15:57.440 --> 00:16:16.159 And we know the Lord had cursed the land all the way back, especially in chapter four, we read about that because Cain was one who worked the land, and uh as a result of him being the first murderer, as a result of his sin and all that sort of thing, we we discovered that his uh land, his job, his work was going to be very difficult. 00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:26.159 But even before that, back in Genesis chapter three, uh, we learned with the fall, uh, all of creation is cursed because of the entrance of sin into the world. 00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:42.399 And a part of that is that the land itself, um, the physical universe itself, which we're told much later uh in the New Testament that all of creation groans for the redemption that is on offer, and that is that is part of God's plan. 00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:45.519 And so it's leaning forward, looking for that, just as we are. 00:16:45.679 --> 00:16:57.679 But here's Lamech, and uh he calls this this uh son Noah uh because his uh his he'll give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands, or rising from the ground, which the Lord is cursed. 00:16:57.840 --> 00:16:58.240 Verse 30. 00:16:58.399 --> 00:17:04.640 Lamech lived 59 and 95 years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters. 00:17:04.720 --> 00:17:06.400 Again, the same formula is used. 00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:12.000 So all the days of Lamech were 777 years and he died. 00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:15.039 Um, and then this final verse, verse 32. 00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:22.400 Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:25.359 And we'll learn more about Noah in the coming weeks. 00:17:25.440 --> 00:17:27.599 But man, this is just an amazing chapter. 00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:33.759 And some of you might be thinking to yourself, well, what in the world are we gonna get out of the reading of just these names? 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:35.920 And uh I'll I'll I'll tell you a couple things. 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:52.799 I really I really think there are some fascinating lessons in a text like this, and they're they're timeless, and they are the kinds of things that apply to you and apply to me, and impact us in a way that uh, again, begin to help us with some of the big questions of life. 00:17:52.960 --> 00:17:57.279 Let me just throw a few things up on the screen for you here in Genesis 5. 00:17:57.359 --> 00:18:04.240 It reminds us, first of all, these names, especially, the significance of every human life. 00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:08.160 And of course, we've made the point that we're created in the image of God. 00:18:08.319 --> 00:18:13.200 Genesis makes that point more than once here in these first five chapters. 00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:23.519 And it's again driving it home that for the all the way back to the beginning of the Bible and running throughout, you will find lots of names. 00:18:23.680 --> 00:18:28.799 And uh, and we're we're gonna get into some passages where they're gonna be very difficult to pronounce. 00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:44.960 Um, and yet, the beauty of these lists, these genealogies, at least that it begins to tell us that each and every human person has a name, and that person is important in some way, significant in some way to God. 00:18:45.119 --> 00:18:54.559 From Adam to Noah, we've got these ten fathers listed here, and certainly tons of other human persons on the planet during the course of their life. 00:18:54.640 --> 00:19:03.920 And if they, you know, if Adam indeed lived as long as we're told here, if each one of these uh men, these fathers lived as long as we're told, they overlapped quite a bit. 00:19:04.160 --> 00:19:08.559 And likely were sitting around in the tent together, having a meal together for a long, long time. 00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:19.519 As a matter of fact, there are those who have done some of the math that think it's likely that Adam may indeed have been sitting in the tent and eating a meal with Lamech. 00:19:19.920 --> 00:19:25.599 Just when you start adding up how many years they each lived and how much that overlaps. 00:19:25.759 --> 00:19:32.319 But these names are important if you want to think biblically about other persons and about yourself as well. 00:19:32.480 --> 00:19:43.039 And I want to encourage you to do that, especially in a day and time when human life is uh uh discarded easily at both ends of uh of lifespan. 00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:48.880 Uh at uh you know, and so here's the Bible coming along and saying each human life is created in the image of God. 00:19:49.279 --> 00:19:54.799 And from the womb to womb to the tomb, each and every human life matters. 00:19:55.759 --> 00:20:01.519 And that's so important, I think, when you start to think about how you think about and how I think about other persons. 00:20:02.079 --> 00:20:08.319 Um and and by the way, that shouldn't be shaped and molded first and foremost by cultural trends. 00:20:08.559 --> 00:20:20.480 That should be shaped and molded and influenced more and more and more uh by the word of God, by the scriptures, as God speaks to us and reveals himself to us and teaches us what we need to know. 00:20:20.799 --> 00:20:30.319 And so here we have again the importance of the significance of every person, because these names are listed, and I think you can deduce that from this. 00:20:30.480 --> 00:20:32.319 They bear the image of God. 00:20:32.559 --> 00:20:48.000 And even as they begin to make moral and social choices, and even as you make moral and social choices, even as I do, we are reminded of the fact that we're supposed to be reflecting this image of God, bearing it and reflecting it. 00:20:48.559 --> 00:20:52.640 So that when I see others, I should think how God thinks about others. 00:20:52.960 --> 00:20:56.799 That is, I should see them the way that God sees them, no matter who they are. 00:20:57.119 --> 00:21:01.519 Human persons are all created in the image of God. 00:21:01.839 --> 00:21:16.880 And so we want to make certain that we are caring for others, that we are loving others, that we allow no room whatsoever for the kind of uh uh prejudice or racism that takes root in our hearts so easily and so quickly. 00:21:17.039 --> 00:21:23.759 Um uh and you and you you you don't want to leave room for fear, you don't want to leave room for anger. 00:21:23.920 --> 00:21:24.480 Uh why? 00:21:24.640 --> 00:21:32.240 Well, because each and every person call modern day uh Iraq over in that uh area of the Middle East, but there are some records that have been dug up, and here are, as I say, some images of this cuneiform writing, two different ones. comes from the pen of Moses inspired by God, because remember, Moses wasn't there in the beginning, but he spent an awful lot of time talking with God up on that mountain and many other times. 00:27:10.319 --> 00:27:25.519 And uh for the for the best that we can tell from our uh from the biblical historical record, is that somebody like Moses, if not Moses himself, is indeed the one who got the compounding consequences of sin. 00:27:44.559 --> 00:27:54.000 Here we do notice a steady decline in human lifespans, and that's that's part of the you know the consequences of sin entering the world. 00:27:54.319 --> 00:28:07.680 Um the Lord said that in the day that you sin, that you choose to uh uh go against God's commands, uh, told the first our first parents that that is the day that death would enter into the world. 00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:10.960 The result would be that death would enter into the world. 00:28:11.119 --> 00:28:22.240 And so here we're even seeing that in the lifespans that are uh going down, and eight different times here uh we are told and he died. 00:28:23.119 --> 00:28:44.079 And so the length of life is being shortened as we go through chapter five, and then the reality of physical death is also occurring, and uh life spans are shortening, and indeed um uh everybody but Enoch and Noah that are mentioned in this chapter end up dying. 00:28:44.319 --> 00:28:51.119 Well, we'll open chapter six with the sad news that the trajectory of human morality was toward depravity. 00:28:51.680 --> 00:28:52.400 As C.S. 00:28:52.559 --> 00:29:01.359 Lewis used to say, uh, progress is really only good when one is on the right road, and humanity at this point is on the wrong road. 00:29:01.519 --> 00:29:06.480 And so there's this compounding consequences --> 00:30:00.079 Sometimes do you feel the walls closing in, you not only your own sin that you can't get the victory over, not only your own fears, your own uh doubts, your own struggles with uh uh already had it, but here we have another word of hope, this flicker of the hope of faith in this person called Enoch. 00:30:33.039 --> 00:30:39.119 Uh, in the entire Bible, the idea of walking with God is really only said of two different people. 00:30:39.279 --> 00:30:45.119 Walking, this idea, this metaphor, walking with God, Enoch and Noah, believe it or not. 00:30:45.279 --> 00:30:48.960 Enoch is said of twice of him, once of Noah. 00:30:49.039 --> 00:30:57.599 And Enoch and Elijah are the only two people that we know of in the Old Testament, anyway, that didn't experience physical Christ, the Christ who came and died on the cross, who rose again from the grave, and promises you eternal life, the closest thing you'll ever get to hell is this life, and most all of your experience, because this life is just a vapor, will be in the presence of God in his kingdom, when, especially after he comes again to set things right, and you'll spend eternity uh with him forever, which is just wonderful. 00:32:03.759 --> 00:32:07.119 Uh, we refer to it as heaven or eternal life. 00:32:07.359 --> 00:32:19.519 If you're not a believer, conversely, if you're not a believer, if you don't uh trust God, don't believe in God, uh, this life here in this broken world is the closest you'll ever get to heaven. 00:32:20.240 --> 00:32:36.559 Um because what the Bible says is that if you reject God, if you reject God's free offer of salvation by faith in Christ, uh this gracious offer for guilty and deserving sinners like me. 00:32:37.200 --> 00:32:43.519 Guilty and deserving, or
