describes the 24 elders and the four creatures that we first met in chapter four, and then the voice coming from the throne, and finally another great multitude, so loud it sounded like roaring waters 00:06:15.040 Did you know that this passage here in Revelation 19, this is the first time the word hallelujah is used in the entire Bible? 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:29.759 There is a Hebrew word, hallelujah, starting with the letter A, that is very similar, and that's used especially in the Old Testament, but this is the first time hallelujah is ever used in the Bible. 00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:32.399 So back to our text. 00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:43.439 Verse 7, let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready. the veil spread over us, that that covering that covers all of us caused by our sin, that that keeps us from a clear view and relationship with God, to heal from us the heartache of sin and suffering, 00:09:02.960 The fine linen, white, bright, pure, that is the wedding gown of the church, the bride of Christ, that material is provided by the righteous deeds of the saints. 00:09:04.720 --> How different than the entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday on the back of a donkey. 00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:11.440 To a resident of Israel in Jesus' time, there was a massive difference. 00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:21.200 A conquering king or military commander would sweep into a city on the back of a war horse, intent on conquering and taking control. 00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:28.240 Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey signified his servant status. 00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:33.200 He was the Lamb of God intent on giving his life away on the cross. 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:37.759 But it's vitally important that we have both images of Jesus. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:46.080 He is the Lamb of God, slain before the foundation of the world, intent on laying down his life for all of us. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:12:01.279 But he is also the resurrected king of the universe, the rider called faithful and true on the back of his white horse, intent on conquering all that is evil, and intent on making all things right again. 00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:11.840 And look at how he judges and makes war in righteousness, not in anger, not in vindictiveness, in righteousness. 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:22.000 And this is who we are longing for, brothers and sisters, that true and just king, the true Prince of Peace who is coming to set all things right. 00:12:24.000 --> you have young kids watching church with you this morning. 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:32.960 Verse 17, then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, come, gather for the great supper of God to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great. 00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:43.600 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him, who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 00:14:44.799 --> 00:14:57.679 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet, who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped its image. 00:14:57.840 --> 00:15:13.919 These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, and the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh. 00:15:14.639 --> 00:15:19.039 Holy cow! What a magnificent, dramatic chapter. 00:15:19.600 --> 00:15:25.759 There is so much rejoicing, so much celebration, so much triumph. 00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:44.000 And then to end the chapter describing this horrific scene of massive roadkill with the buzzards coming to feast on the slain bodies of those who had followed the beast and his false prophet and waged war against the one called faithful and true and his army of heaven. 00:15:44.240 --> 00:15:53.200 What a contrast this feast is at the end of the chapter, the feast of the buzzards, contrasted with the marriage supper of the Lamb. 00:15:54.559 --> 00:15:57.679 Parts of this chapter seem harsh. 00:15:58.240 --> 00:16:11.600 What with heaven rejoicing loudly and fiercely at the destruction of Babylon, and then this terrible battle with massive casualties, but it is the final battle between good and evil. 00:16:11.919 --> 00:16:20.399 And the moment when Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, finally takes to his war horse to make things right. 00:16:20.639 --> 00:16:26.000 In this chapter, we see where God is saying, enough, enough. 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:40.320 And you get a sense, don't you, of thinking of the movie The Lord of the Rings, you get that sense of when Gandalf is standing strong with his staff and he's saying to that monster from the pit, you shall not pass. 00:16:40.480 --> 00:16:42.559 That is what God is saying right here. 00:16:42.879 --> 00:16:49.360 The wrath of God is set against all that is evil and wrong with the world. 00:16:51.440 --> 00:17:01.039 As I was praying this, preparing this week, 00:18:03.920 I've got three thoughts. 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:16.880 Number one, that fourfold hallelujah that we read at the beginning of the chapter is heaven's great rejoicing at God's righteous judgment. 00:18:17.440 --> 00:18:22.160 This is the proper response to the end of evil and wickedness. 00:18:22.960 --> 00:18:38.000 And with everything that has happened in Scripture up to this point, including creation and the resurrection of Jesus, nothing, nothing has merited yet using the word hallelujah until this point. 00:18:38.160 --> 00:18:39.759 Just mind-blowing. 00:18:40.079 --> 00:18:46.480 And that's truly how important it is that justice is finally being realized. 00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:53.200 I think for all of us, we are watching the world cry out for justice. economic, social issues, and yet the underlying theme is people crying out for things to be made right. 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:30.319 You know, we can argue about which things we want fixed or what we perceive to be broken in the world, but one unifying trait is that we all sense that things aren't the way they ought to be. 00:19:30.640 --> 00:19:33.519 And we long for things to be made right. 00:19:33.839 --> 00:19:36.799 We are aching for justice. 00:19:37.519 --> 00:19:44.319 Part of our human predicament is that we are looking for finite solutions for our problems. 00:19:44.960 --> 00:19:49.839 We think that if we can just try harder, we can solve our social issues. 00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:54.079 If we're more tolerant, we can solve our political issues. 00:19:54.240 --> 00:20:05.680 And we think if we just accumulate more data, more science, we can cure cancer or COVID or solve all of our environmental issues. 00:20:05.839 --> 00:20:18.480 And while the goals are admirable, in a sense they are unrealistic because these problems are much deeper than what a finite solution can reach. 00:20:20.559 --> 00:20:27.680 If God is going to deal with suffering finally, 00:23:38.240 And don't underestimate how important this is because of how that miracle, how that relates to what we call communion, the Lord's Supper, and how it looks forward to the wedding feast of
