00:03:47.199 --> 00:03:50.960 We want to remember what Satan knows to be true. 00:03:51.199 --> 00:03:56.240 His time is short because Jesus' work is certain. 00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:02.719 We live on this side of the great promise of the crushing of Satan. 00:04:02.960 --> 00:04:06.800 We live with a view towards his eradication. 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:09.120 So we're going to walk through this chapter. 00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:20.240 We will be introduced to the main characters in this tension and this ongoing drama, this certain drama with clear resolution. 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:33.199 And in chapter 13 of Revelation, John introduces us to the counterfeit trinity, counterfeit Father, counterfeit Son, counterfeit Holy Spirit. 00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:42.240 But we move now into this character presentation with this assurance of our God reigns. 00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:52.560 The unfolding of this story runs throughout this season between the advents of Jesus, his birth and his return. 00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:57.519 So it's important to us, it's important for us to understand the opposition, right? 00:04:57.680 --> 00:05:03.199 The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians that we are not unaware of the schemes of the enemy. 00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:20.720 So to understand chapter 13 of Revelation is to get a better understanding about how messy the conflict gets on this side of the cross, but with a certain view towards beginning to smell the aroma of our coming life in the new heaven and new earth. 00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:33.680 So we're going to look at the great dragon, Satan himself, who is the counterfeit father, the beast from the sea, who is the counterfeit son of God or Antichrist. 00:05:33.839 --> 00:05:42.879 And then thirdly, the third character in this drama in Revelation 13 is the beast from the earth or the counterfeit Holy Spirit. 00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:49.439 So let's jump right into the text beginning at verse 1 of chapter 13 of Revelation. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:51.199 Let me pray briefly for us. 00:05:51.439 --> 00:06:06.959 Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, true Trinity, how thankful we are for how you've been meeting us in this study of Revelation, how you have charmed, crippled, expelled many of our fears as you've increased our faith. 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:13.600 You are showing us a clearer and more sure understanding of the centrality of Jesus. 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:20.480 Delight, not doubt, defines life before the throne of grace. 00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:25.839 And it should increasingly capture our hearts, Lord, not being naive about the conflict. 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:33.839 Even as we're here today, some of us could very well lose our earthly life in service to Jesus. 00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:36.800 But evil has an expiration date. 00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:37.839 We do not. 00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:38.879 Hallelujah. 00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:42.720 Lead us in the study, we pray, in Jesus' name and for his glory. 00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:43.519 Amen. 00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:50.399 Verse 1 this emergence of this pseudo-or counterfeit Trinity. 00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:54.480 And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. 00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:59.279 And I saw, John writes, a beast coming out of the sea. 00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:08.720 He had ten horns and seven heads with ten crowns on his horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:17.519 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. 00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:29.279 Now, verse 2 there should remind us pretty quickly of a vision of an incredible statement in Daniel chapter 7. 00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:47.839 In fact, all these animals that John describes relative to this beast, they represent successive world powers that Daniel wrote about, successive world powers, all which would try futilely to overthrow, overthrow the true reign of our God. 00:07:48.319 --> 00:08:01.839 Again, this this beast in the book of Daniel, this composite of all these different elements, it was Daniel's vision towards, here's where history is going to unfold, towards the coming of the true king. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:06.079 And so it's a clue for us, right? 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:08.720 That John is not frightened. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:11.360 He's remembering the promise of our God. 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:27.360 He's remembering his place in the story of redemption that Daniel spoke of so clearly, and Daniel modeled the life of faith along with his friends in full view of incredible evil and opposition through the empire of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:41.840 So this beasts, of course, that are described, the horns, remember with me, as you've learned earlier in the study of this study of Revelation, that a horn represents a kingdom of power. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:55.200 It represents the attempt of fallen men to exercise authority over the true and lasting authority, that, of course, centering in Jesus himself. 00:08:55.440 --> 00:08:58.799 But beast is emerging out of the sea. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:01.759 Second part of the second verse. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:44.000 Verse 3, one of the heads of the beasts seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:10:02.159 Now, most commentators I've studied through the years agree that this particular head on the beast, who we will further see as the Antichrist, is a way of reflecting upon the first promise God made in the scripture. 00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:24.399 First Proto-Yuangelion, first gospel promise, Genesis 3.15, when God promised in response to the nefarious work of the evil one in the Garden of Eden, that a day would come through the family that God had created, Adam and Eve, through the seed of the woman, a seed would emerge that would crush the head of the seed of the serpent. 00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:46.720 Well, most commentators would say this wounding on this beast is a reminder that Satan himself, his entire minions of darkness, have been wounded, but this apparent healing is just a unique literary device that would remind us that Satan has been defeated, but has yet to be eradicated. 00:10:46.879 --> 00:10:51.360 Now that's important language that we'll revisit again as we look at Revelation 13. 00:10:51.519 --> 00:10:58.720 We need to know, as the Bible said, the reason that Jesus came into the world was to destroy the works of the devil. 00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:10.399 He defeated the devil, and he put in place the sure eradication of the evil one. 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:18.320 But that tension, that season between the advents, birth of Jesus, and his return, it's one we must understand. 00:11:18.480 --> 00:11:32.080 It's one that should be increasingly a call to worship for us, a call to wisdom, but always a call to hope, no matter what following Jesus costs us. 00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:40.000 So this particular picture of a wounding that seems to have been healed reminds us that God has been faithful. 00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:44.080 Satan has been crushed, and therefore we are cherished. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:45.360 Let's go on. 00:11:45.759 --> 00:11:47.200 Second part of verse 3. 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:50.960 The whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 00:11:51.200 --> 00:11:56.240 Men worship the dragon because he had been given authority to the beast. 00:11:56.639 --> 00:12:00.320 And they also worship the beast and asked, Who is like the beast? 00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:02.399 Who can make war against him? 00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:11.360 Now, in these two words, John begins to further remind us that all of life is a worship war. 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:22.080 That whatever else you have come to cherish about the book of Revelation, I pray that you were seeing this central theme over and over and over. 00:12:22.799 --> 00:12:26.720 The biggest theme in life is who has our worship? 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:30.000 Our hearts, our minds, our affection. 00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:37.200 Man, mankind, fueled by the powers of darkness, or God Himself. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:40.799 The dragon and the beast seek worship. 00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:48.320 It'll be the earth beast, the counterfeit Holy Spirit, that tries to make that happen in so many outlandish ways. 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:50.720 But this language, who is like the beast? 00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:52.080 Who can make war against him? 00:12:52.240 --> 00:12:55.360 You know, it's echoing some of the great songs in the book of Revelation. 00:12:55.440 --> 00:12:56.399 Who is like the Lord? 00:12:56.559 --> 00:12:58.320 And the answer is none. 00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:00.559 But many would try. 00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:13.200 Paul captures, helps us understand this view of all of history as a worship war when he writes in Romans chapter 1, beginning at verse 21. 00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:27.279 For although they, speaking of mankind, for although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 00:13:27.519 --> 00:13:40.240 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, and listen to this, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal men, and birds and animals and reptiles. 00:13:40.480 --> 00:13:51.279 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the creator who is forever praised. 00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:52.159 Amen. 00:13:52.480 --> 00:14:00.879 Well, there in Romans 1, 21 through 25, Paul is capturing what John is describing for us in apocalyptic imagery. 00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:09.120 Satan wants to supplant the worship that alone is due, the living God. 00:14:09.519 --> 00:14:15.759 And the worship that is filling the courts of eternity now and one day will cover this earth. 00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:27.840 Verse 5, continuing in this unfolding of the different characters and the schemes of the enemy and what he's really after, and how he goes after even the people of God before the return of Jesus. 00:14:28.080 --> 00:14:28.879 Verse 5. 00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:49.519 Now, once again, this language of 42 months comes to us from various places in scripture, primarily the book of Daniel. 00:14:49.759 --> 00:15:06.000 And it's best to understand these 42 months as not 42 literal 30-day months before the end of the world or Jesus returns, but these 42 months cover the entire period of what the Bible calls the last days. 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:23.200 Now, I think when I preached from Revelation 4, uh reminded us that whenever the Bible, especially the New Testament, uses the language of the last days, it does so looking at the first coming of Jesus for the inauguration of the last days. 00:15:23.360 --> 00:15:42.879 That's why the book of Hebrews says in chapter 1, in the previous days, in former times, God our Father spoke to us through the prophets, but in these last days, he has spoken to us through his Son, whom he has appointed the heir of all things, all the nations, the entire earth. 00:15:43.200 --> 00:16:00.480 Likewise on the day of Pentecost, when Peter stands up in Acts chapter 2 and he quotes from the prophet Joel, describing, defining what's Pentecost all about, he writes, quoting Joel, In these last days, says the Lord, I will pour out my spirit on all mankind. 00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:09.679 Brothers and sisters, the last days of the beginning of these 42 months happen with the first coming of Jesus, as life, death, and resurrection. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:20.559 So this 42-month period in which we should anticipate the manifest powers of darkness, the work of Antichrist, it goes on between the entire period. 00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:24.559 It's not just before the return of Jesus. 00:16:24.879 --> 00:16:31.759 Life between the two advents of Jesus is marked by the work of this counterfeit trinity. 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:33.200 Verse 6. 00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:43.840 He, the Antichrist, opened his mouth to blaspheme God and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 00:16:44.080 --> 00:16:49.279 And he was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. 00:16:50.240 --> 00:16:55.440 And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. 00:16:55.759 --> 00:16:59.039 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast. 00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:02.399 Now, really important we understand what's going on there. 00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:09.359 Once again, the mimicking, the parroting of language we find relative to the promises of God. 00:17:09.519 --> 00:17:14.000 This is exactly what John says our lying enemy does. 00:17:14.319 --> 00:17:21.200 We have more than once already met this language, every race, tribe, tongue, and people, group, and whole earth, right? 00:17:21.279 --> 00:17:24.160 We've already encountered the language of fullness. 00:17:24.319 --> 00:17:31.119 And it's God speaking about his work, his promises in the world through Jesus. 00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:41.039 Well, Satan's work is must be understood, as John would use this imagery, as being pervasive. 00:17:42.640 --> 00:17:43.839 This is what John means. 00:17:43.920 --> 00:17:52.079 He's not saying that literally there'll be a time or has been a time when everybody on the earth worshiped the false God Himself, Satan. 00:17:52.240 --> 00:17:54.640 No, he's saying you cannot go anywhere. 00:17:54.799 --> 00:17:57.039 You cannot go in any place of history. 00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:04.640 You cannot travel to any place in the world where the pervasive work of darkness is not pronounced. 00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:13.680 It may be through the seductions of prosperity, it may be through the fear-fueling reality of persecution. 00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:20.000 But Satan is at work as counterfeit trinity all the time, everywhere. 00:18:20.319 --> 00:18:24.000 His presence is pervasive, but his work is limited. 00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:26.559 Again, hear what you heard last week. 00:18:26.799 --> 00:18:31.680 He, Satan, is filled with fury because he knows his time is short. 00:18:31.759 --> 00:18:34.400 Let's not forget what Satan knows to be true. 00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:36.079 His time is short. 00:18:37.440 --> 00:18:57.759 Now, I love the last part of verse 8 because it's this gigantic redemptive qualifier, just when we're reading words about the whole earth, you know, seemingly falling down to worship the Antichrist and this incredible picture of every tribe, people, and language and nation uh bowing down. 00:18:57.920 --> 00:19:00.319 Uh, look at the second part of verse 8. 00:19:00.400 --> 00:19:08.079 And if this does not put chili bumps on your arms or cause you to want to stand up and worship and shout, hallelujah, I'm not sure what it would take. 00:19:08.240 --> 00:19:13.119 Here's this great redemptive qualifier about the pervasiveness of Satan's work. 00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:16.720 Look at uh Revelation 13, 8b. 00:19:17.680 --> 00:19:44.880 So the entire world worships except all those whose names have, uh except for all those whose names who have been written in the Lamb's book of life according to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world, probably uh uh slaughtered that reading there, but John's making a contrast between those who worship the Antichrist and those who do not. 00:19:45.519 --> 00:20:10.799 And uh it's beautiful to see he speaks of us, of you and me, of the entire body of Christ, of this massive family that have already been described in the book of Revelation and chapter 7 as a number that no one could count from every single race, tribe, tongue, and people group, streaming through the 12 tribes of Israel into the New Jerusalem, streaming through the work of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. 00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:12.799 This great number, who are they? 00:20:12.960 --> 00:20:22.880 They are those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life, who was slain before the creation of the world, or slain from the foundation of the world. 00:20:23.119 --> 00:20:28.240 That's just John's way of saying that the work of Jesus was never an afterthought. 00:20:28.720 --> 00:20:46.400 He's not saying that Jesus was crucified in eternity, he's just saying it is so certain in eternity that the Son of God would come to suffer for us, for you, for me, that his work is seen in its fullness now as we even wait for its completion. 00:20:46.559 --> 00:20:47.920 But just think about that for a minute. 00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:49.440 Don't you all love that language? 00:20:49.680 --> 00:20:52.480 Your name being written in the Lamb's Book of Life. 00:20:52.640 --> 00:21:13.519 If you are a simple follower of Jesus, a brand new follower of Jesus, someone that has known Jesus, and you helped plant Belmont Church with Don Finto, no matter how long you have known Jesus, your name has been written with the indelible ink of God's grace on the book of the Lamb. 00:21:13.599 --> 00:21:17.440 And there is no eraser that can eradicate it. 00:21:17.680 --> 00:21:30.160 Once again, you see, this young church, these churches in Asia Minor receiving these words, they're so small, they're so frail, that their Jesus is so big and glorious. 00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:33.359 And he is the one that wrote their names in his own book. 00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:41.039 They didn't write their names in the book of the Lamb through their works, through their do more try harder, through their piety. 00:21:41.279 --> 00:21:48.799 No, by the blood of Jesus, by the ink of grace, we are written, dear friends, nothing's gonna separate us from the love of God. 00:21:48.960 --> 00:21:59.759 This is who we are, even when life in this world seems to contradict it, even when it seems like evil is winning, this is what's more true than anything else. 00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:07.119 That's why John goes on to say in verse 9, he who has an ear, let him hear. 00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:12.960 Now we've seen that language earlier in Revelation 2 and 3, the letters to the seven churches. 00:22:13.519 --> 00:22:18.160 We all have ears, but there's a there's a hearing, there's a taking to heart the good news. 00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:24.240 There's an understanding both of the, we dare not minimize the conflict, but we understand the conflict. 00:22:24.400 --> 00:22:26.319 Our suffering is purposeful. 00:22:26.559 --> 00:22:31.920 There is an expiration date to every tear, to all evil, to all terror. 00:22:32.640 --> 00:22:34.400 And that's when Jesus comes back. 00:22:34.480 --> 00:22:37.279 But it's already been saddled by his finished work. 00:22:37.759 --> 00:22:41.680 Verse 9, speaking of suffering, he writes, Hear this. 00:22:41.839 --> 00:22:47.359 If anyone, verse 10, if anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. 00:22:47.519 --> 00:22:51.599 If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. 00:22:51.920 --> 00:22:56.079 This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. 00:22:56.319 --> 00:23:06.559 Now, that's odd language, but what's going on there is this duh, but of course, God would say to us, in the unfolding of my story, there will be martyrs. 00:23:06.880 --> 00:23:13.680 In fact, there are martyrs in heaven now that we have already encountered in chapter six who are crying out, Lord, how how long, O Lord?
