Bible or swipe there on your device, 2 Samuel chapter 12. 00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:24.799 We're right where we left off before we came to the Advent season uh and before that stir up Sunday, uh we finished in chapter 12, and at that particular point what had happened was David had really crashed and burned. 00:01:24.879 --> 00:01:28.480 We stopped hearing that David was inquiring of the Lord. 00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:35.120 Um uh we found out that it was the time of year when the kings go out to battle, and yet David did not. 00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:56.799 He remained in Jerusalem, he was on his couch, then he walked out onto the palace roof uh where his eyes fell upon a near neighbor, uh a woman who happened to be bathing, and um and he he looked more than once, he he began to gape at her, and he he lusted in his heart for her, he uh uh sent his men to get her. 00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:02.319 So he's essentially kidnapping, dragging her to his palace. 00:02:02.480 --> 00:02:06.400 Uh he have he has his way with her and then uh uh sends her home. 00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:17.599 Uh it turns out she comes up pregnant, and uh all the while her husband is off at war under the command of 00:03:02.319 He ends up sending Uriah back to the battlefront where he arranges for Joab, his nephew David does, arranges for Joab to put Uriah in the heat of the battle where he will surely be killed. 00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:21.039 So David is guilty of coveting another man's wife, he's guilty of adultery, uh, he's guilty of murder, uh, and in any number of different ways you could look at it, multiple other uh breaking of God's laws and some of those capital offenses. 00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:26.000 Um is confronted because God is seeing all of this happen. 00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:42.800 Uh he's confronted by Nathan the prophet earlier in chapter 12, and uh Nathan uses a prophetic kind of a parable approach and and uh and and essentially gets David to see just how outrageous it is that he would have done this kind of thing. 00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:47.360 And uh uh then uh Nathan says to him, Well, you are the man. 00:03:47.439 --> 00:03:54.159 You're you're like the person in this story, you're the one that did this, uh, to which David offers up a complete mea culpa. 00:03:54.479 --> 00:04:01.439 Uh he does not uh uh offer up excuses, he confesses that he sinned before the Lord. 00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:07.599 And um uh and I think we made the points as we were studying that all of our sins are before the Lord. 00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:16.879 Some of our sins are against other persons as well, um, but all of our sins are against the Lord, and so an offense to God is the way that we look at sin. 00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:20.480 We turn our back on God, we essentially say, has also taken away your sin, you shall not die. 00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:58.560 Again, these were capital offenses, capital sins according to Jewish law. 00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:01.279 And so David deserved to die for some of these things. 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:07.519 However, Nathan says, because by this deed you've given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:06:04.959 And it's interesting that the narrator continues to call Bathsheba, not by her name, but as uh he's only done that once, but but has has called her multiple times Uriah's wife, or Uriah's afraid he would actually commit suicide or that he would try to hurt himself because of his uh uh contrition and the conviction uh of it in his own heart about this and that this was his fault, and they're in their warfare practices, it was nothing for them to pluck an eye out of their enemies, it's nothing for them to literally rip open the stomachs of pregnant women, uh, killing the women and David and said, I've fought against Rabah. 00:12:22.559 --> 00:12:33.840 I've even captured the city of waters, and that that must be some indication of a significant place in the city from which they labor, not under saws and sawing them in half, but he set them under saw, in other words, put made the gave them the burden of these tools and set them about the business of serving uh the children of 00:17:33.920 Um there's much here still that as we look at the life of David and we see him go through this repentance in chapter 12, and after doing all of those heinous things, after being uh oblivious of God, after after being completely indifferent to others, after using people over, you know, this is a great dark moment in his life. 00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:42.960 And and then today, as for once and for all, I still, at the same time that I'm a justified, I'm a believer who's been justified by faith in Christ, I still fall into sin from time to time until he returns and takes that a lot of us believe in the sort of nonsense that's out there, you know, the ascent of humanity, that we're all just continually ascending to higher heights and moving on up and all that sort of thing. 00:20:51.039 --> 00:21:07.119 As smart as we may think we've become, as sophisticated as we may have become, as convinced as we might feel about the ascent of humankind, in spite of all the disnefied, Oprah-ized views about the goodness of every person, the Bible tells us straight up that we've got a basic problem. 00:21:07.920 --> 00:21:12.319 And the problem is sin, as the Bible calls it.
