The Work From Anywhere Agent
27. What your business says about you
Do you ever feel like your business is running you instead of the other way around? Today, I had a breakthrough moment while reflecting on how your business truly acts as a mirror of you. It was a transformative realization that made me reevaluate how elements like discipline, fear of success, and time management are not just business challenges—they're reflections of personal growth areas.
In this episode of The Work From Anywhere Agent, I share my journey of bringing structure to chaos by hiring an executive assistant. This move allowed me to shift my focus, boost productivity, and truly enjoy the process of business building rather than just chasing after the next task. It's a reminder that sometimes you need to hire for the chaos in your own mind, not just the tasks at hand.
Join me as we explore how embracing brutal honesty with ourselves can lead to business breakthroughs. When you peel back the layers of positivity, confront the uncomfortable truths, and put yourself on a path of continuous growth, real change happens.
I invite you to dive deeper into this journey and share your thoughts in our lively Facebook group. Let's discuss how we can align our personal growth with business success and keep pushing towards our goals. Running a business is like the weirdest thing ever. I have fully embraced this idea that your business is a full reflection of you. Like, if you're not signing on clients, that's a reflection of a lack of discipline when it comes to your lead generation, or it reflects self-sabotage and a fear of success. If you're struggling with time management and you find yourself working like 12 or 14 hours a day, that's probably something rooted in a need for control, because you don't have systems, you don't prioritize and you're probably not leveraging, and so like there's all these things that your business becomes a direct mirror of you. And if you can step away and kind of zoom out for a second and be like okay, what is my business telling me right now, then you can start really focusing on not just fixing the business but also fixing yourself in a way that you go, oh, okay, this is something that I need to work on.
Speaker 1:When I was bringing on my VAs and when I was sort of going through this process of structuring my business, it was almost like I was hiring people for these different roles, but I didn't hire anyone to manage the chaos in my brain, and what I mean by that is hiring my own executive assistant, and so Glenna is who I brought on. I brought her on in October and, I have to tell you, has completely changed my life. So it's pretty common that I go on like these random brain dumps, right, and I just share a whole bunch of stuff I need this, I need that, here's all my random ideas and so she basically organizes all of them. We have a couple of VAs between the Orbit side of our business and then also my client side of the business, and so she's the one who's kind of like playing air traffic controller, right, like you go, you go, you do this, you do that, so on and so forth, so I can focus on being present and in the moment with the people who are in front of me and focus on relationship building. And so I have to tell you that yesterday I was actually at a yoga class and my girlfriend's like I hadn't seen her in a while and she's like how are you, what's new? And I was like you know, I have to tell you, I feel like I'm so productive without being chaotic right now, and the instructor happened to be like walking past at that moment and she's like wow, I love that, I'm going to start using that, and it truly is the most refreshing and liberating feeling of when you know that things are getting done, you know that your thoughts are organized and all those things that are like causing low grade anxiety are no longer consuming your brain. And so this made me think back to.
Speaker 1:There's a book called A CEO Does Three Things, and it comes down to a CEO does literally three things people, culture and numbers. The people and the culture is making sure that number one your people are taken care of, that you're leading them well. The culture is how your clients are taken care of, the culture of your team members. And then the numbers are your KPIs and the accountability right. And so now that I'm focused on having basically Glenda be the sort of air traffic controller, I can focus on the development of my people and I can focus on all the crazy ideas that I want to take on. So tomorrow I'm going to tell you about my crazy 30-day experiment that I really just want to try and see, and I know that I'm going to be able to one stay consistent with it because I now have the brain space to do it. I know I'm going to be able to stay consistent with that literally, because I have the brain space to be able to think about doing that every single day, and so I'm really excited to share that with you tomorrow.
Speaker 1:But I wanted to remind you that your business truly is a reflection of you, and if there's something in your business that is not working, don't just look at your business as the problem. Look at yourself in the mirror or, in this sense, looking at your business as a mirror and saying, okay, what is my business? Telling me about myself that I need to break through. And if you can do that without being emotionally defensive, emotionally detached, if you can be really, really honest with yourself about the thing that's holding you back, I promise you, when you are ready to fix it, you're going to see that next breakthrough. But that truly starts with being able to be really brutally honest with yourself, and that is the trick of it.
Speaker 1:Most of us don't want to be honest with ourselves. Most of us love being able to say like I'm awesome and I'm this, and you know, we may not use those exact words, but we might be like I'm so positive, Like I don't want to focus on the negative. But it's not about focusing on the negative, it's about being realistic and being honest with ourselves so that we can fix it. And sometimes being so positive forces us to be blind to the things that are actual problems, because we don't want to be negative or we don't want to let our vibe or our energy get to that place, and so we have to sit in the ugly, we have to sit in the darkness, we have to sit through like where those things are holding us back and understanding that the way through that is trusting yourself enough that you know that you'll figure out a solution to it. So understanding and identifying the problem is not a negative thing, as long as you very quickly pivot to how do we fix this and being okay with the fact that your first or your second or your third or your fourth solution might not be the perfect solution.
Speaker 1:Right Like these are things that we have to grow through and lessons that we have to kind of try and things that we have to experiment with to make sure that we are growing alongside of our business, but trusting that eventually you will get it right.
Speaker 1:And this is also where being growth minded and leaning into your resources, leaning into mentors, leaning into books, leaning into the all the things that we can learn from other people's wisdom is where all this comes into play, and so I hope that this is helpful today.
Speaker 1:I know this is one of those airy-fairy type of topics where it doesn't give you a whole lot to hold on to or to practically implement, but all I can say is you and your business are mirrors of each other, and if our business is not giving us the results and the outcome that we're looking for, that's okay.
Speaker 1:But we have to be really honest with ourselves. We have to be willing to look at ourselves in the mirror, wipe away the fog, the rose colored tint that we get to see there, and just get down to what is the real issue and how do we start fixing it. And then you test and tweak, and test and tweak, and test and tweak, and test and tweak until you figure it out, and that becomes the new journey. And so this is where, when they say being obsessed with a destination is not going to make you happy, it's because if you don't learn how to fall in love with the journey and have fun with the journey, then you miss the whole point of living, you miss the whole point of running a business. And so, with that in mind, please join us in our daily discussion in our agent Facebook group, and I will see you in the next episode.
