 The origins of dentistry trace back to around 7000 BCE in the Indus Valley Civilization, where flint-tipped tools were used to drill into teeth, likely to treat decay. By 5000 BCE, the Sumerians believed tooth worms caused cavities, influencing dental practices for centuries. Ancient Egyptian texts, such as the Ebers Papyrus (c. 1700 BCE), described remedies using honey, herbs, and minerals like malachite for oral health. Hesy-Ra, an Egyptian official from 2600 BCE, is the first known dentist. These early civilizations laid the groundwork for later advancements in dental care and treatments.
