On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, with Trenton as its capital. The state’s history stretches back to prehistoric times when the collision of tectonic plates formed the Appalachian Mountains. During the Ice Age, glaciers shaped its landscape, leaving behind rivers, swamps, and meadows. The Lenape people, known for their matrilineal society and trading networks, inhabited the region before European exploration began with Henry Hudson in 1609.

New Jersey played a crucial role in the American Revolution, earning the title “Crossroads of the Revolution.” Key battles, including Trenton, Princeton, and Monmouth, helped shift the war’s momentum. In 1789, New Jersey was the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights. Industrialization later transformed the state into a manufacturing hub, home to innovators like Thomas Edison.

Today, New Jersey is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and contributions to innovation. It is the "Diner Capital of the World," home to the first professional basketball game, and a key agricultural producer despite its urbanization. From the first organized baseball game to the Atlantic City Boardwalk, New Jersey continues to be a state of historic firsts and cultural impact.
