Ladies and gentlemen, welcome once again to another episode of Dragon's Gold, the magic of mindset. Today, we have the pleasure of having the founder of Empress Capital, George Salas. George, welcome to the show. Justin man, I've actually been looking forward to being in your podcast here for a few weeks, man. Thanks for having me, man. Super excited. Absolutely, my friend, welcome. And we're stoked to have you. So let's dive right in. Let's talk about the origin story. Who is George Salas? Where did you come from? And just share your story with us, Yeah, absolutely, man. I like to say my story really started when I was six years old. I was living in Lima, Peru at that time. And one day, mom brought my brother and I into a room and said, hey, we're going to go see grandma. Nevertheless, parents are getting a divorce. So. We found ourselves traveling, you know, moving to grandma's house. This was an Adobe house in a small town in Peru in the jungle side of Peru called Tarapoto. Right. we lived in an Adobe house for nine years with half of that house literally collapsing. So Adobe house is the way they're, they're built. You know, you've got these older Spanish tiles on top. So there was a hole in there. Boom. The roof started to leak. We didn't have any money to. to fix any of this, all of a sudden two storms, boom, the entire roof collapsed. So we had to move over. And for nine years, we lived in two rooms. This is older. talking about those houses don't exist anymore. But that was the beginning of a journey. Yeah, what a start and how many people were living in those two rooms? So the house had one room that was divided by a sheet, a plywood sheet. Grandma's room, then the living room was on the other side. Then you had a kitchen that just had these, you know, ceiling that was open on both sides. Then we had another room with my brother, my mom and myself. And then we had an area in the back of the house that wasn't even a room and that was one of our uncles. So total five or six, five, five, yeah. Well, that's, mean, it's still a huge thing. luckily a roof over your head, even if half collapse and like being able to have that. But so when George, did you know that you were destined for something greater? When did you have that hunger or that drive? When did you know you wanted more? First time was whenever I was realizing, I was maybe 19 years old. I was working at this restaurant. It was a sushi restaurant in Midtown Houston. And all of a sudden, I get fired. And I worked there for a year. And I met two people that continued to come in. there were two venue owners of two venues around Midtown. And I built a relationship with them, right? And they would tell me about their ventures and their venues and their, you know, filling the places up with people. And I was like, I could do better than this. know, I was being, was serving, was bartending and I'm like, I could do this and I could come in and be of value to this, these two guys. And That was the first time, right? So I got fired and then I decided I'm going to go start this marketing company. Right? So I got my best friend and him and I started a marketing company and what we would do is we would market and promote nightclubs, right? And we would promote venues. This is like, was 21 years old, right? And I always had the entrepreneurs edge. I always had that fire and I was like, man, I could do better. Like, what am I doing now? Like I've got to step into that next level, but sometimes in life, something Drastic something tough, something that really like knocks you out of the park and you fall like getting fire from your, one of your first jobs happens to you. And most people wait until that happens before they make a decision. Some people don't ever make that decision. Right. So that was the first time. So when did you move from Peru? When did you move to the States? Um, I moved here 2000, right? So the year 2000, we arrived here right before the new millennium. it was, you know, mom was getting married. She did the online dating thing for the first time. mean, internet was out and she got to know this person over a few years. Married moved over here. Right. And, uh, I live in Houston now, you know, so, and that, that, that, that whole thing was the cycle. A blessing. And at the same time, I was able to see my mom, you know, like really, she always wanted to build a life for her and us that was different than what we had there before. Right. So you're 2000 and, surviving for the new millennium. When you came to the States, I'm curious, what was your initial perspective? What did you think? What feelings did you have? Opportunity was the first first thing I thought right moving here We went we flew in through Miami. So what I remember I'll never forget is the cars were twice as big And it was beautiful every time I just took my father to Miami will get there But we went through then we were in Florida for a week when we got him here to visit, you recently But we'll touch that subject in a little bit But it was so different And it was a completely different world, right? And Miami, everything was just a whole nother, just being another galaxy per se, right? So it was, it was, it was a journey just from that time, the whole entire journey changed. It's funny when I hear you say that I picture about how things grow and how things change and the evolution, right? The area of what you recall from memory and what you saw versus what it is now, how much has changed, but also so too, how much you've changed in your experiences, right? And how much life has helped to shape you and how you've been able to grow, right? The growth, the maturity, the lessons that we take, the things that we learn. I'm curious in that over time, the trials, the tribulations, the gauntlets, the things that we have to go through and overcome. What are some of the moments that you look back on that were perhaps difficult, but that helped you to grow? Yeah, so from the time I arrived here, that drive was there, right? I always wanted to be something better than myself, right? So fast forward, call it nine years, okay? And I had started this marketing company that I told you about, right, earlier, I think of a topic here of the air. And I was just trying to... figure out like, hey, what do I do better? And all of a sudden, I was able to partner with different people and I was able to really start a movement. For me, it was my first movement. was 23, 24 years old at that time. And I had realized that I could do better after quitting that or getting fired from that job. And from there, just a whole other journey began. It was good for a few years, right? It was great. I was young. was energetic. I was naive. I was full of energy, but the energy had no direction, right? I was just putting it wherever, wherever I could in whatever came in front of me without the, the wisdom, without the skills, really, I was just a driver and I've always been that way. And in most people, Can drive but they never fulfill themselves with that energy right with that energy and the wisdom and the skills because wisdom in in just a quick Summary for me wisdom is experience plus introspection introspection right so By back then I you know, I didn't have much of that. So as the journey went through fast forward another seven years and closer to 2017 Now I've been invested into my own venue, right? So now it's eight, nine years into this industry. I am putting together sort of a group. I was partnering with somebody as an investor or limited partner, right? For those of you who don't know what a limited partner is, somebody that does not have... Partnerships say so in a commercial partnership or in a limited partnership, right? So you invest. So that's an investor. And it was also hired by that business, right? That was created. So it was an investment. So I invested about $300,000 over the course of a year to help this group start our own venue. And a year and a half after that, this is 2018 now, we lost everything. So was my first investment and it was my first rock bottom. I had lost everything I've built in my entire career with this business. had saved over $300,000. I'm 20, know, 23. So fast forward nine years. Now at this time I'm 32-ish, right? And I lose everything. That's when I realized I'm like, I could do better again, right? So almost a decade goes by and sometimes people... Just wake up. Right. So if you're listening out there and then all of a sudden, you know, something hits you. Right. And you don't know where to go. Like this is the time where most people try to wake up, right. Or make that decision. So I made that decision right then and there. And in 2018, after I had lost everything, right. Cause this venue went out of business because of Many reasons not going to get into that, but I was naive, um, in business, I did not have the skills that I do now. So I was invested into a partnership that I was blind. was blindsided because I didn't know any better. I didn't have the correct, you know, the correct team, the right attorneys, the information, you know, and sometimes you just make decisions because you're a driver, right? You go with your gut instinct. So that was me. And that was the biggest lesson. So how do I turn it around? Justin? Well, I've got to make another decision. And all of a sudden, one of my friends here out of Houston calls me one day. This is right after the hurricane and says, George, I need you to come to this property. Right. And it's, it's a fix and flip that I'm doing. It's in Cypress, Texas, where I live now, you know, and this is November of 2018. I still have that voice message saved in my phone. I drive over there, there's 15 people there for three hours. This guy starts speaking greatness to this group. I walk out of there with a different mindset. I could do this. That was the moment that woke me up and said, I can actually go build something way bigger than what I even imagined back then. I love one of the things you mentioned about that idea where you go through, have all this energy, but there's no focus, right? And when you can harness that focus, it's, it's incredible the power that comes from that. But sometimes you don't know where to put that attention or where to put that energy. Right. And so when you having gone through and experienced and again, experience plus introspection equals wisdom, right? Once you've got that wisdom and you're in a moment where you go through an investment, it fails. And you have a situation where you're left with nothing of all of that work and that time, that money, all of that you've invested. What it doesn't take away from you is that wisdom. It doesn't take away the experience that you have. And now you can build back better and stronger and faster. than you ever did before because you're already coming from a place of power. You're already coming from, know that I can do this. I always believed in myself. I pushed myself through. And even though now that I've lost it, I know how I can get it back and build bigger. Right. When you had, when you left that, that meeting, the person speaking greatness, when you left there, that fire, how did you channel it now based on the wisdom that you have from the previous experiences? At that time in my life, I was having awakening moments, right? And one of those moments to me was like, maybe there was some information out there that I could read. Maybe there are books that could channel my energy. That's when I went into personal development in 2018, when I was lost, rock bottom broke. I didn't know where I was going to go. was in a bad relationship. The only toxic relationship I've ever been in. And I said, I'm going to do this. So I took my entire network and I started learning. did what I do now, right? Which is books, growth and learning, my number one core value, right? That's what you've to do. The first thing for anybody wanting to change their life is go figure out there are things out there. There's information out there, especially with chat GPT now. that you could create. You could create your own plan. there are books you can read on specific topics and immediately start creating these ideas. So I channeled it through first books and courses. Then I started going to networking events where I was meeting people just like I did in my past. I was in the event venue, business, production. So I would meet a lot of people. But I didn't know what to do with these relationships. So now I was like, OK, well, I need to build a relationship. you know, relationships out there with people and we need to support each other. Right. So started doing that. also was attending seminars specific on how to build a real estate business and all that energy instead of going in three, four directions now started being channeled to like, Hey, George, go learn real estate, figure out what's your niche. Like, how could you, based on your need and my need at that time was, Hey, I'm coming. out of nothing, right, from rock bottom, it was cash flow. So I started doing fix and flips, going into real estate, education, education, books, courses. My first book was a mindset millionaire book. It's called the Millionaire Real Estate Investor. And that book changed my life because it made me realize and it gave me the view of what I could do over a long period of time, right? Boom, boom, boom. in literally Justin, literally six months. Okay. First deal on 2018, beginning of 2018, six months later, we're launching 10 short term rentals. Okay. That same year, first year in real estate, 300,000 in actual revenues from our wholesale deals flipping in short term rentals. Okay. Then more wisdom at the end of 2018. I'm working 18 hours a day, still channeled through real estate. Now it's not everywhere, but now I'm like, okay, there's a few things I need to change here again, right? You're always kind of coming down from your high and then realizing, hey, this is one move I need to make. was the end of that year was one move I needed to make was letting these other strategies go and focusing on one and getting really freaking good at it. And that was short, tremendous. Why? Because I needed cashflow. I needed money to live on. needed to pay my bills. by investing and getting partners and doing fix and flips and managing these deals, waiting three, four, five months to get paid, didn't work. Wholesaling was inconsistent for me. And I did fairly well, right? Middle of that year. That's what created the investment capital that year to be able to invest into these show fundamentals. And then at the end of that year, I started with a strategy called rental arbitrage. If you have no money or you have a little bit, this is a great strategy. We don't do that anymore, but we would rent these apartments in Sublease if I make the mark, make the difference at Delta. So we were, we were netting, you know, anywhere between 500 to a thousand dollars a door. Imagine two, three months later at the end of 18, we have 10 doors. Then by the end of 19, we literally have 30. Now I'm taking some of these renovations and rehabs I'm doing and flipping them into short terminals and I'm going into the house game in 2019. I'm going to take my house and make it into a short terminal. So I did that with two or three. Then I hit another rock bottom. I am full energy. lot of deals. COVID hits it the beginning of 2020. Boom, 40 doors, 37 of them were these apartments I had. Downtown Houston is completely closed. Now for six weeks, nobody can travel, barely getting booked at, right? I had my properties and now I'm having to carry this load of lots of rents and mortgages. And that was tough. That was the second rock bottom, right? Two rock bottoms without the proper, right? The decision-making, the things you're sometimes like decisions that you make. or what put you where you are today, right? Every decision. So from there, I learned a lesson, right? And it was diversifying, always taking risks, but being prepared and risk averse by understanding a lot of the backend side of things, your numbers, the investment side of things. And this, nobody could see what COVID brought, right? It the the amount of change that came from that event is incredible and being an end to the same point, the amount of change that came to you after hitting those rock bottom moments, those moments of pain, right? And pain plus reflection equals growth. And so the idea about being able to grow back from those experiences, taking all that wisdom that you've accumulated and then applying it. and then help being able to pivot and course correct and then change and going into those short-term rentals, finding the way to do the cashflow because of course the bills don't pay themselves and you have to be conscious of the fact that we need to create that. But also in regards to things that you can't plan for, the best laid plans unfortunately don't always work and oftentimes don't, but being able to have an idea and a trajectory of a vision of where you want to go with it helps you to align. When that way, when things go off course, you can find a way, you know where your destination is. You can course correct and bring it back. Being able to change the past is not something that any of us can do, but be able to change the future based on the experiences and the knowledge and then taking the action to move forward to it. That's, that's your gift. And so I'm going to ask, we talk about the darkest hour, a moment that was just painful where you were going to throw in the towel and you've touched on some moments that, that were, that were absolutely difficult, but you Obviously and thankfully been able to come out of those what are and I call this the the dragon's gold the the mindset shifts that we experience What are some of the values in that mindset shift that you've experienced? That you can share with the listeners that you've learned having gone through these tough times Yeah, absolutely, man. so as, as those events were happening, you know, there's transformation. read this book called fix this next. Okay. By Mike McCallewick's business book, great book. And this is 2020 during the pandemic. My number one realization of that first six months of that year was bigger is not always better. Profitable is better. Right? So I'm doing a ton of deals and I have all these doors, all these rentals, but the margins are very small. So anything that could change in the industry, in the market could put you out of business. Thank God I was prepared and I had some back reserves that were a allow me to pay some of the bills for the next two months, even though I was losing money for two months straight. Bigger is not always better. More profitable is better. More concrete and defined and niche. To me, now, niches is what we go after, right? The riches aren't in the niches, right? So I learned that. I also learned that, you know, sometimes you don't have to do everything. I was doing everything. I was working 18 hours a day and this is why I started really going deep into, you know, meditation, journaling. productivity, know, writing my goals and doing all of this stuff that I do every single day and I'm sure you do too, but those are just habits, right? So you can't implement five habits all one time. It's got to be one or two here and there. And I mean, you would see my calendar today. And then the way I do have it's I want to plug in a really cool tool that I've been using. Maybe I should do it at the. we call it tools and weapons things that you've used on your journey that have helped you and so What are some books that you would share with our listeners? Yeah, absolutely. there's. Millionaire real estate investor allows you to see the growth thinking, grow rich allows, allows you to see what could happen if you change your mindset to an abundance mindset. Now there's another book by Carol Dweck, right? Called mindset. That's probably the. the groundbreaking book for anybody that is going through something and wants to change their life and it's just maybe they don't know that that that mindset needs to be tweaked a little bit, right? So, but the growth continued for me was massive growth, right? And that's personal in all domains of my life from there. Right? So that's when I think the most pivotal time in my entire life is going through a semi rock bottom second, not as tough as the one in 2017, but, go into something tough during the pandemic where like, is what I need to do. Okay. So go deeper in these areas. Right? So now creating wisdom in many areas of your life. Like that's what I started doing fast forward to, to today. You know, I've got two concepts that I want to share with, with the audience today, right? One is who, not how that's in all areas of your life. So now I use a support system of who's for every area of my life, for my spiritual life, for my love life, for my, you know, mindset, for my mission, for my productivity, for everything. I have a mentor for every area of my life, basically. Right. And the mentors in the form of. different books or coaching programs or a mastermind, which, which is where you and I met, you know, and then the other one is 10 X is easier than two X. And for some reason, both are from the same, same author, Dan Sullivan. Yeah. So the concept of who knows how comes first, start creating the who's in your life that can really help you get to where you want to be faster. And then once you've got the who's. Go faster by going more niche defined, which is 10 X each and then two X go faster by doing less, by working on things that really matter and that create impact your life and the people that you surround yourself with and your clients and customers. I think something you say there is so relevant in regards to what you do, that focus, that attention, when you really leverage the tools, the resources and your network, you grow, but you also help others as well. And you talk about mentors, whether it's through books or in life, whether it's friends and allies, we call it the fellowship. And so in your journey, who would you say has been instrumental in your changes and your growth? as a mentor or an ally. Yeah, there are two people that I'll always remember, two of my mentors, Ray Perez and Dave Van Hoos. These two gentlemen, they are fantastic marketing coaches. But when I joined their group, I basically went through their, I dealt with these guys, you know, And I joined their group for a whole year, but I dealt with them at a personal level in our group. There was only maybe five or six people, right? And this is a very high end, very close mastermind. And these guys taught me what excellence is, right? How you do anything is how you do everything. One thing I got one of the many, but the most important thing. that changed the course of everything I do today was in 2021 when I was going through this program with these guys is how you do anything is how you do everything. That thing alone, that concept and psychology of, of, of you making decisions every single day of how you do anything is how you do everything. Change my entire life. And that was probably the third and most important concept in the entire trajectory of the last 20 years. I think that's absolutely resonates. Funny enough, I just quoted that yesterday as well. And the idea behind that is that it is so powerful. And when you find yourself in that moment, if you are questioning the way that you're handling something, like that's a great point for reflection to be able to think about how can I change this? How can I grow and how can I become better? Right? And not comparing yourself to other people, but comparing yourself to yourself. How How are you doing something? Can you do it better? What's your system? What's your process? And then how do you emulate that or repeat that in a positive manner? In the journey that you have gone on, what would you say if you were to share a lesson, if you were to share a lesson with our listeners, and you've already shared many, I'm super grateful, George, for the insights you've had. So we call this the hall of heroes. This is the legacy, the passing the torch. If you were to have a statue and you're gone from this world and on this plaque, it has something that you can share a moment, something that you want people to remember you by. What would it say? There are three things in life that if you focus on, no matter how hard life is and how many changes you're making progressively, right? I would say number one is if you want to change your life, growth and learning will do that for you. Next to growth and learning, you've got to have that action to apply what you learn in the conviction. to just keep going. Okay. The next thing is changing your process as you grow. Because I mean, you've, you've heard the story. Like you never know what life's is going to give you. Life can give you whatever it wants. Right? So it's all based on, you know, everything you've learned, decisions you're making. So changing your process as you go. Right? Maybe this didn't work. Let me try this thing. Right? Maybe I made a mistake on that. I will never make that again. And actually journaling about how you did. Now I've got a really cool journaling routine that I do every single Friday. Right. And I will mention that they're into tools, but little, I go through a 30, 45 minute process of how my week went. And then that creates analysis and introspection. Right. For me to change my process and make that thing better next week. And then the third thing is knowing the end, which is purpose, right? Like where do you want to go and why that is to me is probably the biggest thing. I write down my goals every day. I write down my purpose and, I really work on not just having mean schools, right? Not just having goals that are attached to numbers and metrics and stuff, but what do you see yourself with your family in a few years? How are you going to create impact to the people that you surround yourself with in two, three, five years, right? So doing that type of introspection every week, really following the path of five items, four or five items I just mentioned, if you just applied that to your life, 30 minutes a week, you know, in three, four months, maybe less, you will see amazing changes to just the way you think. So you'll start making different decisions. I think the benefit of that compounding effect, right? All that effort, that time you put in and the way that it refines and the way your system and your processes refine and then suddenly how much more powerful you become as a person. Talking about the idea about having those long-term visions, those long-term goals, those three years, those five years and so on is hyper relevant and it gives you, I call it the lighthouse. It gives you a destination to move forward. But you talk then about taking those weekly reflections and those moments. And that's the magic. That's where you can course correct real time to be able to realign yourself and recognize, am I moving the needle? Am I moving in the right direction? And you won't always make the most efficient progress because it's not easy. It's messy. There's a lot of things that come into play between personal life and business, et cetera. How you feel from health. and health is wealth as they say. And so all of the things, the factors in life that will affect you, if you can look back and understand what impacted it and then how you can pivot and grow and how you can make those changes, what to remove, because sometimes what you have to remove is as much as important as what you have to add to be able to refine your process and to grow. Thinking back, George, about that idea of the statue, if someone were to walk through and see a plaque, in that hall of heroes, what would you want them to read? What would you want it to say? One line, don't ever let anyone or anything stop you from achieving your dreams. Very powerful. And I completely agree with that. I love it. Don't ever let anybody tell you what you can or can't do. Don't ever let anybody stop you from achieving your dreams because your dreams are absolutely valuable. Anything. And I'm going to, I'm going to quote Napoleon Hill, anything the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve. I love quotes and I'm going to ask, I call this the words of the wise George, is there a quote? that resonates with you, that you would share with our listeners. That was the quote. That quote was so powerful for me Your dream could be to have a beautiful family. Don't let anyone or anything stop you from that. Right. You dream could be to have a billion dollar company. Don't let anyone or anything stop you from that. I love that quote because it really resonates with what I've gone through. And if somebody out there is going through a tough time, same thing. So this is a quote that you could tell yourself every single day. So George. What's the next quest? What's next for George Salas and Empress Capital? 2025 is a leverage of 10 X impact, right? Nothing will stop us. But the impact that we're making is in what I mean by 10 X is doing bigger projects that are more meaningful, creating more impact and actually create, a. grow our business in a much bigger way. So my entire career has been doing for me one deal at a time, one decision at a time. Now, this year we're launching an investment club, right? This year we have right now a 12 and a half million dollar portfolio. That's more than my personal assets in one portfolio that I've built over six, seven years. Right. So this year, we're gonna acquire two more portfolios which will triple our assets, right? This year, I'm 10Xing my marriage, I'm 10Xing my health, right? So very defined, 10X impact, high leverage activities, right? And once you learn that, Once, I'm sure you know this, but once everybody out there listening can learn. how to multiply themselves by doing 10x leverage activities, you move so much faster in life. And I'm not talking about money because money, you know, money is a complete, that's one of the nine or 10 areas that, that I'm just mentioning. I'm talking about every area of your life. George, think when you say that it's so relevant because oftentimes I say wealth is a tool, but joy is the ultimate outcome, right? The intention right now is what is wealth, but something to help us to achieve those experiences, those memories, those opportunities to be able to help people, whether it's growth and opportunities to experience moments with your family or to give them the comforts and conveniences that we are so lucky to have accessible to us. But also, What can that wealth provide as a tool to help others, right? To create that impact, as you say. And ultimately, who else can we affect? What are the ripples that we can put out in a positive way that will change your life for the better, but also the lives of others and the lives that you touch? George, I'm going to ask a question that is hands down my favorite to ask. If you could be any mythical creature, what would it be and why? So I thought about this one. I looked up mythical creatures and I came up with something different at uni. Okay. A fish taco that is P I S H taco. One word. What that is is sort of a four for cloric boogeyman figure in the Peruvian Andes, which is where I'm from. Right. So in this, you know, full cloric figure consumes fat in his victims. of some sort, still learning about this. And in this case, this represents being able to take the opportunities, right? And then removing the bad ones and only taking the good ones, which is the perfect example for creating a 10x future. I love it, my friend. Definitely, and I like to pride myself on the fact that I know quite a few of them. You did expand my mind with that. I was not aware that existed, but I love the idea. I love learning and I love that you shared it with us and our lover listeners. It's the idea about helping to take that opportunity and to grow from it. While I'm not intimately familiar with the fish taco and Peruvian culture, and I will be looking it up, Thank you to the age of technology making that accessible for me to learn. But I think about the growth that comes from those opportunities, not just for what you can do for your family, but also again, the impact that you can make to others. You create lodging on a short term so that people can create their own memories with their families or be able to have temporary residency. So for employment purposes, where they don't have to set down permanent routes. And so it gives them the flexibility. And so just the multiple ripples of the benefit that come from the investments that you're making, that's incredibly powerful. I love that that's an opportunity that you become vested in and that you're able to help people to invest in as well. Thank you. Thank you. And not only that, I mean, that that's the core of what we do, but I haven't even mentioned to you the side where we we help other investors create their own. Right.
