Why Your Willpower Fails And How The Spirit Leads

What if the gap between your desire to please God and your daily reality isn’t a lack of effort but a misplaced source of power? We open the Scriptures to explore why willpower cannot produce holiness and how walking in the Spirit leads to the abundant life Jesus promised. Grounded in Galatians 5 and Romans 7–8, we trace the honest struggle every believer knows—the tug-of-war between flesh and Spirit—and uncover a practical path out of frustration and into freedom.
We start with the foundation: new birth by the Holy Spirit and a clear destination with Christ. From there, we tackle the myth of self-sufficiency head-on. The flesh, our natural humanity apart from God, craves control and self-indulgence, and it cannot deliver the life it promises. Even good intentions collapse under pressure when fueled by the wrong engine. Paul’s confession rings true: “For the good that I want, I do not do.” That honesty becomes a doorway to hope when he cries, “Who will deliver me?” and answers with gratitude to Jesus Christ.
Moving into Romans 8, we lean into the liberating promise that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets us free from the law of sin and death. This is not abstract theology; it is a daily posture of trust. We talk about what walking in the Spirit looks like in ordinary life—hearing the Word that builds faith, relying on the Spirit’s presence, and seeing love, holiness, and unity grow in our homes and churches. Dependence replaces striving. Gratitude replaces guilt. And a steady, faithful walk replaces the cycle of resolve and regret.

Flesh Versus Spirit Explained
Why Willpower Cannot Produce Holiness
SPEAKER_00Walking in the spirit. We understand what God has given us through His Spirit, we began to live. Jesus said, I am come that you might have life and have it more abundantly. Abundant life is life lived in the Spirit. He has given you me the Holy Spirit. I know the Holy Spirit is not proclaimed like it ought to be. We declaim that's from human theory and imagination. But let us really get serious with the Bible. Give me the Bible. I'm serious about the Bible, the Word of God, because He reveals Himself to us. Whatever we need, He shows us that He is a giver. We have nothing in ourselves to bring to God and say, Dear God, my good works. You don't have any good works without Christ. It is Christ who lives in you and me. He produces the things that are pleasing to God. You remember the term walk, he's used many times in the Bible. A walk, you remember, as a beginning and a destination. Our beginning was in Newburgh. The Bible taught us in John 3 through Nicodemus' approach to Jesus. We must be born of water and spirit. But since it's the age of the spirit, we must understand that it's the spirit that gives the new birth. Our destination is heaven forever, with the Lord and Savior. And thus we shall always be with the Lord, according to First Thessalonians 4, verse 17. Remember that a good walk is steady and progressive. We are called to be faithful. Oh, listen to the word faithful. When God calls you and me, he's going to say, Well done, good and faithful servant. Listen, faithful servant. We are called to press ahead. Again, through Paul, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. Paul says, I press toward the goal. Yes, we are going forth. As we look at this perspective of the Christian life, living in the spirit makes complete biblical sense. When we connect our daily walk to how we found spiritual life in the first place, the Bible teaches if we live in the spirit, Larry's also walked in the spirit. It was strictly by the work of the spirit that we received life initially. Therefore, let's take each step of life as a Christian, walking in the spirit. Now we have to understand something else concerning the spirit that has been given. There is in us flesh. And the Bible teaches us what goes on within us. Let's listen to the Bible. In Galatians 5, chapter 5, verse 17. Uh let the Bible answer probably the questions we have, what goes on inside of us, and why we go struggle here. I hear Christians, some Christians struggling. Oh, they have such struggle. And uh I look at the scriptures and say I say we don't have to have that kind of struggle. Jesus came that we might have abundant life. Listen to the Bible. For the flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Every believer, what's you hear this? Every believer in Christ has had the frustrating experience of wanting to do what pleases the Lord, but being unable to actually accomplish such. Amen. We are told here a spiritual struggle is behind the failure that we have as Christians, and it's the flesh. Listen to the mic, for the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. The spirit of God dwells within our lives. He is true, he is the spirit of holiness. Romans 1, verse 4. He desires the spirit of God, he desires that we be partakers of his holiness. Hebrews 12, verse 10. And thereby walk in godliness. The flesh, listen carefully, the flesh is the natural, is natural humanity, is what you are at birth. Natural humanity is also present in our lives. These natural desires of humankind are not toward holiness, but rather toward self-indulgence and self-sufficiency. How many people have you heard? Probably yourself standing up, which you're going to do and what I'm going to do. Don't smoke it, don't drink it, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't. What do you do? We have a wrong concept sometimes of what the Bible teaches us. We must become partakers of God's holiness. These natural desires of humankind are not toward holiness, but rather toward self-indulgence and self-sufficiency. Stresses, I want you to hear that. Thus, what the spirit desires and what the flesh craves are set against each other. These are contrary to one another. The consequence of this internal conflict is that you do not do the things that you wish. Even though godly desires develop in us as new creatures in Christ, we find ourselves unable to implement these longings by our good intentions. That's why I say again and again, nothing good sourced from us. We think doing something good, we bring it to God. Goodness does not source from you nor me. The apostle Paul gave testimony to his own failure in the battle. Listen carefully. Romans 7 verse 19. For the good that I will do, I do not, but the eagle I will not do that I practice. The problem was that Paul's personal resources called the flesh, listen carefully, very important, were not adequate to produce desired results. Listen to Paul, for I know that in me, there's a parenthesis there. Listen to the notice the parenthesis. That is, in my flesh, nothing good dwells. But how to perform that? What is good, I do not find Romans 7, verse 18. Yes, Paul had some godly desires. He says, For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. Romans 7 22. See it. Nevertheless, there was a problem that he could not resolve on his own. You and I can't either. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members. Romans 7 23. A tendency to sin that dwelt in Paul's human members, his body, his brain, pull him down to defeat. He needed help. Help, Lord. And it comes as we look at this passage of scripture, thank God for revelation. Access to that necessary divine rescue was through a humble cry for deliverance. Listen to the cry. He says, Oh wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? See, Paul understood you and I should understand the struggles that we have. Who shall deliver us? See, we need deliverance. God in Christ, who is our delivering us, always recognizes as we live each moment of life. We are wretched in ourselves, we need help. This appropriate confession of the spiritual bankruptcy of his flesh led to another confession of certain victory. Listen to Paul. He says, I thank God it is true, Jesus Christ our Lord. Praise God. Romans 7 25. It's humble, humble turning from self to Christ allows one to walk in the spirit. Romans 8, living by his victorious resources of the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Praise the Lord. Lord, we thank you for this revelation, and we cannot do anything of ourselves without your help. All the good we think we can do in and of ourselves, no. The goodness that we have is through the Holy Spirit that you have given us. The love that we have is given to us through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit residing in us, we learn to love. Agape. Help us understand it's by faith. Oh, thank you, Lord. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. You told us through this lesson today, we cannot live holy on our own. We cannot even produce holiness on our own. You keep teaching us it's not us, but it's the Son of God. This is a Christ that dwells in us through the Holy Spirit. He's the one, praise God, help us to understand this. The church will become much stronger than it is right now. Everyone who's a member of the church would learn that's the Holy Spirit that gives us life abundantly. We all learn to love each other. Love would be in the home, love would be between husbands and wives, love would be between family members if we learn and hear the word. Unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before his presence with exceeding joy. Now and forever, let us all say amen.
