Beauty For Ashes And A Life In The Spirit

When a promise names your pain and then names your future, you lean in. Isaiah 61 does exactly that, and we walk through it line by line to show how Jesus fulfills the prophecy and how the Holy Spirit turns heaviness into praise, captivity into freedom, and ashes into beauty. We share why meekness is not weakness but the doorway to power, how abundant life flows from reliance not striving, and why the Word becomes our map when sight fails.
We start with the heart of the passage: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me.” Jesus lived this anointing with prayerful dependence, and that same Spirit now equips us to live with purpose. From there we trace the mission—good news to the meek, healing for the brokenhearted, liberty for the captives—and get practical about the chains people carry today: condemnation, grief, failure, betrayal, and habits that keep us small. We talk about feeding on Scripture so freedom lasts, and we explore the great exchange God still offers: oil of joy for mourning and a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, forming us into “trees of righteousness” that stand steady through changing seasons.
Grace frames the whole story. The “acceptable year of the Lord” means welcome is open and spiritual riches are real, even in a world marred by war and worry. We pray for leaders and nations, not as a sign-off but as part of our calling to proclaim what God is doing now. And we end where the passage points us: sent as Jesus was sent, empowered by the same Spirit, to speak hope, embody truth, and testify to a freedom that holds. Setting Isaiah 61 In View
SPEAKER_00Give me the Bible. Today I want to take you to Isaiah. Isaiah the thirty sixty first chapter. We want to look at what God is doing. We can understand what God would have us. We do. We understand that the Bible teaches us how to live. You want to live. Like the Bible says. Listen to the Bible. Long chapter in Isaiah, but I'm gonna look at chapter sixty-one. And three verses we're going to look at today. Look what God has done. That's the way we ought to live. God wants us to live like Christ lived. Like Christ lives. It says in chapter 61, Isaiah chapter 61, beginning at verse 1. It says, The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind the brokenhearted, who proclaim liberty to the captives, and to open the prison to them that abound, who proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God, who comfort all that mourn, who appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty, for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness and the planning of the Lord, that He be glorified. Thus God gets the glory for what he has done, what he is doing. As we look at this passage and meditate upon what we are reading, it says the Spirit of the Lord God is upon me. This is a prophecy, prophecy concerning Christ. As he lived as a human being on earth, he was sent by his father. He is the only begotten Son of the Father. He was made flesh and he dwelt among us. He walked the earth among us. He walked depending upon the spirit of God. He says, it says that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Jesus. As he walked, he walked in the spirit, depending upon his father. He talked to his father in prayer. His father talked to him through his word. He gave his son the word. The Son has given us the word. The Son has told us and constantly helping us about life. Jesus said, I'm come that you might have life and have it more abundantly. He shows us how to have that life. What he did for you and me, whether we recognize it or not, when some who understand it give praise to the Lord. We don't walk on our own, we walk with the help of our Father through Christ Jesus our Lord. Christ has brought to our attention that we are to walk in the spirit, link us through prophecy. The way he walked the earth was through the spirit. He said the spirit of the Lord was upon him. What did he do as he walked in the spirit? Well, it's amazing as we look at scripture. And Lord help us to understand your will as we read. Jesus says, What happened as he walked the earth? He came preaching good tidings unto the meek. See, God would have us to be meek. But God calls you and me to be meek and lowly, not high and mighty. Meek and lowly. Humility is not easy to understand, but ask the Lord to help us to understand what it means to live in the Spirit, not only to hear about Him, but allow Him to live in us. It has to be by faith. We walk by faith. We need to understand it's by faith, a new and living way. Praise God. We can testify as we walk, we walk in the Spirit. We are taught to walk in the Spirit. Christ walked in the Spirit. Spirit was upon him. Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, I want you to understand from this day forward, never forget, you and I have been given the Holy Spirit to walk in him, and you will see a difference in what life is all about. If we don't walk in the spirit as we are called upon to do, we will never understand what it means to have the abundant life. The life of peace comes through the Holy Spirit that is given to us. I just love to preach the word of God, because what He has done for you and me, He has given that word given. That's what God has done. When we talk about grace upon grace, we're talking about what God has done, what God is doing in our lives. Once we understand that, we can understand peace, we can understand what God is doing. Oh, as we live, we live by what God is doing. Oh, He has made us what we ought to be in Christ. When we have the Spirit has given to us like He's good within Christ, we make a proclamation. Proclamation simply means proclaim means to cry out, to cry forth. We ought to cry forth the goodness of God. Define crying forth of sorrow. Define folk crying forth, help, help me. We're always in trouble, but we don't need to be crying forth our troubles. We need to cry forth what God is doing. We walk by faith and not by sight. When we understand that, we understand, we will begin to understand what it means to live abundant life. Praise God. See, God is taking care of us today. We hear wars, we see on our television wars, and what's happening, people are dying because of war. But God in his spirit helps us and keeps us. Praise God. We pray for our government, that the Lord will continue to bless those in leadership. Praise God. He has kept us, he's keeping us. Praise God. We pray for the nations that are at war. We keep praying that God is keep helping, helping all of us. He helped the nations. He's constantly doing it. Those in the nation, sometimes uh they don't want to live like God wants them to live. They want to live according to their own goodness. They think they have goodness, but no one has goodness on his or her own. Our goodness comes through the Holy Spirit that God gives us. Praise God. The proclamation. But God does. He appoint he gives appointments, and his appointments is all grace. He appoint unto them that mourn in Zion. He gives to them beauty for ashes. Praise God. Oh, look what he's doing. And he gives oil of joy for mourning. We don't have to be mourning and crying out of the Lord, oh Lord, but give him the glory, praise him for what he is doing in our lives. He gives us a garment of praise, not the spirit of heaviness, but the spirit of praise. The garment of praise, praise him, that they may be called. Here's what we are called. We are called trees of righteousness. And understand, understand the planning of the Lord that he might be glorified. That's how we give glory to him. We praise him for what he is doing. Praise God. As we look at it further in the prophetic scriptures, the spirit of the Lord is upon me. The Spirit of the Lord is upon all of us. He has given you in me the Holy Spirit. We have been empowered by the Spirit. Jesus was sent to preach good tidings to the poor. This refers to the gospel of salvation. Jesus went about all over the cities and villages preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Oh, what a blessing we have this day to be in the kingdom of God. We don't have that spiritual bankruptcy. We have the glory of God. We are blessed beyond measure. Blessed are the poor in the spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This is what God is doing for us. Also, Jesus was sent to heal the broken-hearted. The heart of man can be broken by many things. It can be broken by condemnation, it can be broken by grief. It can be broken by failure. It can be broken by betrayal and more. Jesus comforts and restores those who trust in him. Praise God. Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be confident. Not only that, but we uh in the gospel, he proclaims liberty. We need freedom. Christ gives us freedom. He gives a liberty to the captives and the opening of prison to those who are bound, as with captive Israel. Of all people today, get into bondage on their own to the world system. They become captivated by worldly thinking, bound by bad habits, imprisoned by ungodly relationships. Jesus is the great liberator, praise God. All who cry out to him and feed thereafter upon his inspired word, give me the Bible. You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Praise God. Therefore, if the Son, Jesus, makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Surely, surely, free indeed. Furthermore, Jesus was sent forth to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Ultimately, this speaks of the entire age of grace. Oh, grace upon grace. God gives us what we need, whereby lives are accepted by God through faith in his beloved Son. And enriched by Christ with immeasurable spiritual riches. God has blessed us. Listen carefully as we close. God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ. Praise God. We also sent forth the minister. As the Father has sent me, I also send you, as it was with Jesus. We can only fulfill our calling by the same Holy Spirit who empowered his ministry. May God with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Testify, church. Each one of us should testify, give glory to what God has done and is doing in our lives. You have given it to us, help us to read with understanding. Continue to bless us and continue to strengthen us to live accordingly as you have dictated to us in your word. And we continue to glorify your name. Amen. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before his presence with exceeding joy. To the only wise God, our Savior be glory and majesty, dominion, and power. Now in favor, let us all say Amen.
