Welcome to season six of Sacred Garden. This season is about a life. Not an abstract idea of Judaism, not a list of rituals. A life. We are going to follow two fictional Jews, Sarah and Joseph. From birth to death. They are not biblical characters, they are modern Jews. They grow up in reform communities. They live in our world. And as they move through life, we will ask two questions at every stage. Where does this practice begin in Torah? And how has it developed through rabbinic Judaism and into Reform Judaism today? Because Judaism did not stop at Sinai. The Torah is the root, but roots are not the whole tree. The Hebrew Bible gives us covenant, narrative, law, and moral vision. The rabbis of late antiquity built legal systems and rituals around those texts. Over centuries, Jewish communities adapted those structures in response to geography, culture, and ethical insight. Reformed Judaism is part of that long development. It did not reject Torah. It did not erase rabbinic tradition. It asked which practices carry forward the ethical and spiritual heart of Judaism, and how do we live them responsibly in modernity? This season is about clarity. We will name what is biblical, we will name what is rabbinic. We will name what is medieval custom. We will name what is modern reform adaptation. And we do that to cultivate understanding. Because ignorance creates suspicion, and suspicion breeds hostility. And sacred garden exists to cast light instead. So let's begin before Sar and Joseph are even born. In Genesis seventeen, God speaks to Abraham. I will maintain my covenant between me and you, and your offspring to come, as an everlasting covenant throughout the ages. Throughout the ages, long before Sarah's parents met, long before Joseph's grandparents immigrate, long before any synagogue sanctuary where they will one day stand. The covenant already exists. That is the starting point of Jewish life. A Jew is not born into a vacuum. They are born into a story already in motion. This season will follow that motion. We will watch Joseph enter covenant at eight days old through Britmila, a commandment rooted explicitly in Genesis and Leviticus. We will watch Sarah receive her Hebrew name, a ceremony not commanded in Torah, but developed later to affirm that girls stand equally within covenant. We will see both of them reach Bar and Bat Mitzvah, a milestone with no ceremony described in the Bible, yet grounded in biblical assumptions about moral accountability. We will watch them stand under a hoopah. A wedding cannot be inspired by biblical language of covenant, but shaped by rabbinic law and medieval poetry. We will explore how Jewish law regulates intimacy, in Leviticus first, then through rabbinic elaboration, and finally through reform reinterpretation. We will even walk with them through a period of serious marital strain, when divorce becomes a real possibility, and we will look directly at Deuteronomy 24, where the Torah first legislates a bill of divorce, including the striking rule that certain separations cannot be undone. And eventually one of them will die, and we will sit with the other in mourning, asking where Shiva comes from, why Kadish never mentions death, and how memory becomes part of covenantal continuity. Judaism survives not because it's frozen in time, but because it grew while remaining rooted. Think of it this way. Rabbinic Judaism built the trunk. Reform Judaism tends the branches, sometimes pruning, sometimes grafting, always drawing from the same source of nourishment. If we do this season well, something subtle should become clear. Jewish life is structured, not randomly, not rigidly, but intentionally. Birth is marked. Maturity is recognized. Love is sanctified. Sexuality is bounded. Conflict is regulated. Grief is held. The Torah does not give us every ceremony we practice today, but it gives us the foundations. A reform Judaism does not invent Jewish life anew. It carries it forward consciously, critically, ethically. On the next episode, Joseph is born. He is eight days old. He does not know Genesis seventeen. He does not know Abraham.
