Sar and Joseph met in their late twenties, not a synagogue, at a mutual friend's dinner party. They both grew up reform. They both had Paten Bar Mitzvah ceremonies that felt meaningful, but also ordinary, part of growing up. Their early dates are not theological, but eventually the question surfaces quietly, if this becomes serious, what kind of Jewish home would we build? Marriage in the Torah is not introduced with romance, it is introduced with structure. Genesis 2, verse 24 states Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. Living, cleaving, becoming one flesh. This is descriptive, not ceremonial. The Torah gives no wedding script, no canopy, no ring formula, but it does frame marriage as a reordering of loyalties and a new relational unit. Later in Malaki two verse fourteen, marriage is called a covenant. She is your companion and your covenantal partner. That language matters. Covenant is not casual, it implies obligation, endurance, seriousness. By the time we reach Deuteronomy twenty four, marriage is clearly treated as a legal status with consequences. Divorce requires a written document, because marriage is binding enough to require formal dissolution. From these biblical foundations, Rabbinic Judaism builds a wedding structure. The ketuba, a written marriage contract, emerges to define obligations, originally to protect women's financial rights. It is not in the Torah, it is rabbinic. The hupa, the wedding canopy, symbolizes the couple's new household. Its exact origins are debated, but it becomes standard in medieval practice. The ring exchange develops with a specific legal formula. Behold, you are consacrated to me. The Shiva Brachot, seven blessings, are compiled in the Talmud, weaving together themes of creation, joy, and Zion. And the breaking of the glass, a much later custom, reminds the couple that even at moments of joy, Jewish history includes loss. Now fast forward to Sar and Joseph's wedding day. They stand under a hupa in their reformed synagogue courtyard, and their ceremony reflects development. Derketuba is egalitarian. It does not describe Joseph acquiring Sarah. It speaks of mutual commitment, partnership, respect, shared responsibility. They exchange rings, both of them. The rabbi explains that in traditional Jewish law, marriage was enacted through the groom giving something of value. Reform Judaism reframes this as mutual consecration. The Shiva Brachot are read in Hebrew and English. One blessing praises creation, another speaks of joy between loving companions. Another imagines the streets of Jerusalem filled with celebration. Ancient words, modern voices. When Joseph breaks the glass, guests shout Mazatov, but what matters most is quieter. Sar and Joseph were born into covenant individually. Now they choose to build a shared life shaped by it. They speak private vows they've wrote themselves, promises of honesty, intellectual partnership, shared ethical commitments. That language is not biblical, but the idea beneath it it is. Marriage binds two lives into responsibility, and in Reformed Judaism, that responsibility includes equality, not hierarchy, not ownership, partnership. As they leave the hoopa, they're not entering something invented yesterday. They are stepping into a structure built layer by layer. Biblical foundations, rabbinic law, medieval poetry, modern ethical revision. The tree has grown, but the root remains visible. Next episode, we move into more private territory.
