Sara and Joseph have been married for twelve years. There is no single moment when things begin to feel different. It is gradual. Work stress, different expectations about parenting, long stretches of silence that used to be filled easily. At first, they assume this is temporary, but after months of tension, the word appears quietly, almost academically. Divorce. Neither of them expected to say it. So they do what many thoughtful reformed Jews do when facing a serious life decision. They ask what Judaism says about it. And here the Torah is explicit. In Deuteronomy twenty four verse one we read A man takes a wife and possesses her. She fails to please him because he finds something objectionable about her, and he writes her a bill of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house. The language is difficult for modern readers, but it reflects an ancient legal framework in which marriage and divorce were initiated by the husband. But it also does something important. It requires process. Divorce is not abandonment, it is documented separation. A written bill of divorce, what rabbinic Judaism later calls a get, formalizes the end of the marriage. And then the Torah adds a striking limitation. If the divorced woman marries another man, and that second marriage ends, whether through death or divorce, the first husband may not take her back as his wife. The separation becomes permanent, irreversible. This is stated in Deuteronomy twenty four verse four. And Rabbinic Judaism builds extensively on this short biblical passage. Detailed procedures emerge. A get must be written intentionally, it must be given voluntarily, it must be received willingly. Over centuries, rabbinic courts oversee the process to prevent coercion and to protect women from being left in ambiguous marital status. What later becomes known as the problem of the aguna, a chained woman unable to remarry. Now Sar and Joseph are sitting in a rabbi's office. The rabbi explains, in Reform Judaism, civil divorce is legally sufficient to end a marriage in the eyes of the state. But many reform rabbis still encourage a Jewish divorce ritual, adapted from the traditional get, to mark the religious conclusion of the relationship. Modern reform divorce ceremonies are egalitarian. Both partners participate equally. Language is mutual. The emphasis is on dignity and closure, not blame. The rabbi also explains something else, the biblical rule from Deuteronomy. If they divorce and later regret it, Jewish law does not assume they can simply reunite if either has remarried in the meantime. Marriage, once dissolved under certain circumstances, cannot always be restored. That gives the decision weight. Tsar and Joseph leave the office unsettled, not pressured, but aware that divorce is not only emotional, it is conveniental. Judaism does not prohibit divorce, but it regulates it carefully, acknowledging both the necessity of endings and the seriousness of breaking a shared life. They begin conversations at home. Some are difficult, some are clarifying, and slowly something shifts. They realize that what they want is not separation, but repair. The Torah root remains. Marriage can end. Rabbinic Judaism builds legal protections around that ending. Reformed Judaism emphasizes mutual dignity and ethical process. But Jewish tradition also assumes that covenantal relationships are worth tending where possible. Not because divorce is forbidden, but because now they understand what it would mean.
