Joseph dies in late autumn. Not suddenly, there is time for hospital visits, time for conversations that circle gently around what is happening without always naming it directly. Sar is with him at the end, and then, very quickly, there are decisions to make. Jewish mourning begins almost immediately after death. But if we turn back to the Torah, there is very little formal instruction about how to mourn. There is grief, there is burial, there is memory. In Genesis 25, verse 8, we are told that Abraham breathed his last, dying at a good ripe age, old and contented, and he was gathered to his skin. Gathered. Similarly, in Deuteronomy 34, Moses dies and is buried, but the text gives no mourning ritual beyond the people weeping for thirty days. The Torah acknowledges loss, but it does not prescribe a detailed mourning system. That comes later. Rabbinic Judaism develops structured practices to guide the living through grief. Burial ideally takes place as soon as possible. A burial society, Hevra Kadisha, prepares the body with ritual washing, known as tahara, and dresses the deceased in simple white shrouds. This practice is not described in the Torah. It reflects a later commitment to dignity and equality in death. In Sara's reform community, the funeral home works in coordination with the local Hevra Kadisha, trained to provide these rites respectfully, without imposing practices that families do not request. Joseph's funeral takes place two days later. Sara participates in Kriya, the tearing of a black reborn worn on her clothing. This act symbolizes the rapture she has experienced. Again, not a biblical command, but a rabbinic response to biblical grief narratives, such as Jacob tearing his garments upon believing Joseph dead in Genesis 37. After the funeral, Sarah returns home. For the next week, she seats Shiva. Friends bring food, visitors come in the evenings. There are moments of silence that are not awkward. Sarah does not host, she receives. Atish gathering a short prayer service is held, and there is one prayer in particular she repeats daily, the mourner's kaddish. What is striking is what the Kaddish does not mention. There is no reference to death. Instead it begins magnified and sanctified be God's great name. Rabbinic tradition reframes grief as a moment not to dwell on mortality alone, but to reaffirm a relationship between the mourner and the community and between the community and God. Reform liturgy often includes English alongside Hebrew, allowing Sarah to understand what she is saying even in the exhaustion of early mourning. After Shiva, the intensity of visitation lessens, but mourning continues. For eleven months, Sarah recites Kaddish regularly. Each year thereafter, on the anniversary of Joseph's death, she lights a candle and attends services to remember him. The Torah gives us the fact of death. Rabbinic Judaism builds practices around mourning. Reformed Judaism adapts those practices to modern life, sometimes shortening Shiva, sometimes adjusting expectations on daily prayer while preserving the underlying intention. Grief should not be faced alone. Memory should be structured, because when Joseph dies, covenant does not end. It continues in Sarah, in their children, in the stories told at the Shiva table.
