Episode 8: The Importance of a Transportation Captain

Denis OBrien

Hey everyone, welcome to Episode 8 of Make Your Film! Today, we’re talking about a role that often flies under the radar but is crucial to keeping your production running smoothly: the Transportation Captain.

If you're working on a film set — especially when you're moving between locations — you need someone to be in charge of all the vehicles. Think about it. You’ve got vans, trucks, talent cars, gear trailers, and maybe even some personal vehicles on set. If you don’t have a clear plan, chaos ensues. People start looking for keys, vehicles get blocked in, and before you know it, the whole schedule falls apart.

That’s where a Transportation Captain comes in. Their job is to:

  • Manage all the vehicles on set.
  • Coordinate parking and ensure vehicles are positioned efficiently.
  • Distribute keys and track who has them.
  • Ensure vehicles are ready to move when needed.

This role is especially critical if you’re moving between multiple locations in a single day. You don’t want to waste time figuring out who’s blocking who or scrambling to find keys. You want to stay on schedule and keep your production flowing smoothly.

So, assign someone to be your Transportation Captain. It’ll save you time, headaches, and money.
