Make Your Film - Episode 17: Don’t Bootstrap Your Movie,  Unless…

Hi, it’s Denis O’Brien from MakeYourFilm.net. Remember, we’re here almost every day with a few minutes of wisdom from the perspective of a producer. We’re not talking about screenwriting, directing, editing, or acting. No, we’re here to talk about producing—bringing your project home, on time, whatever that means for your film!

Let’s get into it. If you think you can bootstrap a film, maybe you can. But let me tell you: don’t bootstrap unless you are ready to make this movie with everything you’ve got—all things in your life considered. Don’t bootstrap unless you are ready to burn the bridges and go all in. Don’t bootstrap unless you’re prepared to ask everyone—and I mean hundreds, maybe even thousands of people—for funding and support. Don’t bootstrap unless this is the most important thing in your life right now.

If you’ve just written a script and want someone else to make it, go elsewhere. Learn how to write query letters and network differently. I’m here to help the people crazy enough to want to finance and gather resources to make their own films. You can do it, but you need to start learning early.

The Package Sells It

So, what’s the key? The package. Ideally, you need either a director with some credibility or a producer with similar credentials. If you have both, that’s even better. But if both are unknown, then it gets harder—unless you can still bring actors with credibility to the table. If you can do that, you can sidestep some challenges and secure funding.

The package is everything: story, director, actors, producer, and more. You’re running a nonstop campaign, so you need to keep updating and refining your package. Take the time to examine how movies are packaged. Look at proposals and read the backstories of successful films. Understand how they were put together and funded.

Be Ready for the Haul

This is going to be an adventure, and you need to prepare for the long haul. You’ll be working with:

  • Tax Credits
  • Grants
  • Personal Funds
  • Family and Friends’ Funds
  • Matching Funds
  • Presell Funds
  • Crowdfunding
  • Co-Productions

Every option must be on the table. It’s a marathon, but if you’re passionate and committed, you can make it happen.
