Episode 44 – Build Your Team
Hey everybody, I’m Denis O’Brien and this is Make Your Film — a few minutes of producer wisdom from a guy who’s been on more than a few shoots.
Today’s topic — Build Your Team.
As you go into a series, documentary, or film production, one of the most important things you can do is start building your team early. Before the gear, before the locations, even before the budget comes together — you need people you can rely on. People who understand what you’re trying to do, and who are ready to help you get there.
Now, a lot of new filmmakers want to jump right into forming a company, filing an LLC, printing business cards — but hold up a second. You don’t need to run out and start an LLC just because you’re finally making your film. That can come later.
The time to start an LLC is when there’s money in play — when you’ve got an investor standing in the doorway, ready to sign. That’s when you need the structure, the paperwork, the bank account, and the protection.
But before that? Build your team. That’s the real foundation.
Everyone approaches this differently, but if you haven’t spent your whole life in this business, your first job is to surround yourself with experienced, trustworthy people — folks who’ve done it before, who can help you navigate the chaos. That inner circle becomes your ship crew. Together, you’re going to cross the ocean.
These projects take time, and the journey can be rough. So build your vessel carefully. Choose your captain, your first mate, your navigator — people who will look out for you, protect your vision, and keep the project moving forward.
That’s how great films get made. Not by one person running around trying to do everything, but by a team that’s built with care.
