Aged to Perfection

John and Jo # 8

John Longo

Well, it's time for John and Joe again. Hello. It's, our anniversary today 36 years. Did you forget? I almost did. Lost two years. so we had a nice celebration yesterday, father's Day, and we combined, father's Day and, anniversary and we went to the Cheesecake Factory and had a great meal. I did, we did. We had reservations, luckily because they had. A lot of people there, and we even got a close by handicap parking spot, which I always get concerned about when you go to the Mall of Georgia because it's so busy. at any rate, here we are turned out. we have to do a few disclaimers on our last episode, which we said was episode number nine. And due to, my miscount, it was really episode number eight. So now this is episode number eight and number nine. Going backwards. A few, clarifications. On our last one we talked about going to a pub in San Francisco. And it was really what they call the Buena Vista. Buena Vista is kind of a landmark there. I, Referred to street cars, which are really cable cars. And you all knew I was, I meant that. And down by the ena vista is a turnaround. And when you get off the cable car, all the occupants, turn it. Joe even, helped turn it. that's where the guy told us that we were too old. We should be not paying full fare. even though we were on our honeymoon, I guess that cleans up what we did wrong. We thought we'd talk a little bit about our dogs that we've had, and a lot of you have had dogs. I know. we love dogs. dogs are a good reason, for exercise, good companionship and the love their dog gives you. Joe and I have had separate dogs and we've had together dogs. So I thought maybe Joe, you could talk about your, dogs before John and John will talk about his dogs before Joe. then we'll talk about John and Joe's dogs. So, Joe, over to you. The first dog I had was a black copper spaniel named Curly, curly was a great dog, but she did not like Debbie, my first born child. I had lost my father just before Debbie was born, so we gave the dog to my mother for companionship, so curly became her dog. Then we, had a hunting dog that dog never came in the house, so I never named it. I'm sure my first husband did, but I don't recall what the name was. Was that a beagle? It was a beagle. Okay. Outside dog? Yes. He used it, for hunting What about your German Shepherd though? Oh, we had a German Shepherd. That's right. Now my husband, I told you my husband went hunting and every year he would go hunting and I would get Phone calls from a man, it was a very disturbing phone call. So after I got Penny, I never got another phone call from that person, See, he must have lived in the neighborhood and knew when my husband left and Penny protected us. after that, we moved to Florida. in Florida there are a lot of fleas because of the sand. So we got ASEs, which are African dogs that have a very, very tight fur the fleas cannot get through to skin, but also they do not bark. They yodel. Like Dale Evans and Roy Riders. Not quite like that though. It's a very loud, loud yodel. You could be a block away from the house and he would hear that yodel. So the first dog that we had was named Redstar and unfortunately, we went on a cruise and left our dog with one of the ladies from the dog club. And Red Start ran out and got hit by a car and was killed. Well, they were pretty upset about that. so we contacted the breeder, and the breeder said she had a dog that was traumatized. unfortunately the man that owned it, shot his wife and the dog, saw all that, and became very upset. So we took the dog and we nurtured that until my husband died. after I met John, and we became an item. he said, we're gonna get married and you're gonna come to Chicago. Well, he had a border collie and border Collies and vice. don't get along too well. So I found a couple in Jacksonville that had just lost their bassi. I interviewed that couple and, they took the dog to Jacksonville. So I then became, Dogless until you, Met Jim. Well, Jim did not like me every time I sat down next to Jim. Or next to John, Jim would bite me. John also had a problem One time when we were on the telephone, John said, I think I have to go to the hospital. You want to tell the story? No. You, you can tell it. Well, you were walking the dog. Mm-hmm. And what happened? Well, I was talking to Joe and all of a sudden I noticed, blood coming down my hand and my dog. Jim had bit me. So how did that happen, Jim? Well, he didn't like his feet touched and when I was trying to get the call, you know, get the lead out from under his feet, he bit me. So went to hospital and they said, do you know whose dog bitching? I said, my own dog. So that was kind of a beginning of the downhill for Jim. So now John, he also chased children. Jim was a bad dog. Our son, the doctor said we should put him on Prozac. wait a minute. We're getting in on my dogs. You had your time to talk about your dogs and now you're talking about my dogs I'll stop. My first dog when I was a child was a Spitz. You don't hear much about Spitz, but Spitz's name was. Rex. Now Joe claims that the dog should not have been named Rex'cause it's a male dog. Because, Rex had puppies, several puppies, and one of'em was fuzzy. And I kept fuzzy and I kept Rex, when I was little. Later on growing up, we had a chow dog, you know, with purple tongue. That dog name was Skippy. And Skippy was a terror. We couldn't get milk delivery. We couldn't get mail delivery. We could not get garbage pickup because Skippy would chase after people and we'd put'em in the backyard and we had a clothes line. My mother had a post on, you know, either end, we had about 10 feet of wire. We'd hook Skippy up. Skippy would run, pull the wire down, pull the post down, and chase after anybody in Skippy's way. Okay, so I was told, you know, like some dogs go to the farm. I was told this dog went to the army. I don't know if that was true or not, but he did. Later on, after I was married, I got a St. Bernard, I was traveling in, Pueblo, Colorado, and I had to spend the night I was servicing, I was a service tech For RCA and I was, spending the night out in the road. It was about a hundred miles from Denver and I wanted to get a St. Bernard I saw this ad and he said, puppies for sale. So I said, I'll go look. the guy said, a hundred dollars. I said, I don't have a hundred dollars, I got$5. He said, gimme five and mailed me the balance. I said, okay. So I took, excuse me, that's sorry. Right? Brandy Ann was her name. Duchess of Denver. her father was Penrose, prince of Penrose. Barbara, my wife, said, I'm not gonna work to support a dog. She didn't work. She quit anyway, but, we did have the dog for 15 years. Dog had, bladder stones and our vet took a dish, pan of stones out, made key chains for his patients, to give them. From John's dogs, bladder stones. Then I got a Lossa Opso. And this Lasa Opso had been in a pet shop for Christmas, never sold at Easter. I bought Yum, yum was his name, and yum didn't shed, but I couldn't train that dog to do anything. when I got transferred to Chicago from Los Angeles. On the plane was yum. The dog. my two kids, my wife and, a cat named Neiman Marcus. Neiman Marcus had partial tails, so her daughter wanted to give him a fancy name, so Neiman Marcus. So we got two Chicago, with those animals. later on I got to Border Collie, which Joe, didn't like, and unfortunately we had to have. Jim put down because he was kind of vicious. Well, I didn't like him'cause he bit me. But he was very smart too. Renee. He could chase a ball. Yes, sure. so then we get to our dogs. You can talk about Max. Yes. max was the, Shetland, Shetland sheep. She sheep dog. Mm-hmm. Beautiful dog. Just beautiful. Well, we bought at a, pet store, didn't we? No, I think we got him in a newspaper head, didn't we?'cause we, oh, okay. Remember we went and we got his paperwork and we went to the vet to get his shots and said, here's the paperwork. And the paperwork they gave us was on a cat, not on the dog, But we had the best groomer every time we wanted to go someplace. The groomer said, let me have the dog, I'll take care of it. Not only did he take care of it, his daughter had the dog in her bedroom every night that the dog was there. then we lost. The dog. he was very sick. had a lot of problems and I used to have to carry him out in the snow, shovel an ear in the snow for him to go, and finally it just got too bad. So we were dogless for a long time. we moved to Aiken, South Carolina. And I said, Joe, why don't we get a dog? So I wanted to get a designer dog, you know, I didn't want just a regular dog. I wanted a designer. You know, like a poodle or something we went and bought a dog and we named him JJ boy did that dog work and cry all the time. day and night. We couldn't go to sleep, we couldn't go anywhere. so I said to Joe, I'm gonna take the dog back. No, we paid$350 to this. Mm-hmm. And we took the dog back, did not get a refund, and she resold it for$350. There you go. So that dog got, sold several times. Then we got a Maltese and we bought it from, school teachers, didn't we? In Augusta, Georgia. That's right. Mm-hmm. And when we bought him, Teddy, that was his name was under their bed and they had to scoop him out and we took him, Oh, my Joe was holding him in the fleas, jumping all over. All many. So we went directly from where we got the dog to y Vet and vet. Gave the dog a pill and got rid of the fleas. we had Teddy for, quite a while. Teddy, only weighed two and a half pounds. Unfortunately. He had encephalitis and blind and, He was the star patient at the University of Georgia Veterinary Clinic. He had five doctors. We took him up there all the time, and they gave him great care until we just couldn't do it anymore. he had seizures and just, would hit the wall and almost knocked himself out. It was a sad situation to the end, but that was in November come, Christmas. I told you we need to get another dog. he had been investigating Havanese dogs and we were at church one Wednesday night, we went to a class and John was talking to somebody in our row about wanting a Havanese. The woman in front of us turned around and said, my daughter breeds Havanese. So she gave us his, her daughter's. Information we got in touch with her and you want to tell what happened? Well, she was up in Hamilton, Virginia, so we drove up there. She was a year and a half old and she had a, now this is from Georgia. From Georgia. She had a liver shunt problem, so she couldn't be bred. So she was a show dog at the time. So we got her and she went into heat the very day that we picked her up. So we had to go to the doggy store and get doggy diapers. I said, would she ride in the car? the breeder said, I don't know, she hadn't been since her last show. Well, she rode, spent the night, and we bonded very well Very loyal. Had her for 12 years. unfortunately, she had throat problems and, We just had to let her go. So that's our last dog. So now we are Dogless, we would like to get a dog. However, our neighbor has a lab. A Labradoodle. And that dog's name is Wrigley. when Wrigley comes over she just gets up on our couch and, and gloves on us. And we feel like we have a dog again, it works out fine. Well, that's our dog history. hope you found it, somewhat entertaining. I'm sure most of you have had dogs maybe not as many as we've had, but we've had a lot I'm sure you can relate to some of the problems we're kind of happy to be dogless, but we do miss our dogs, So I think that's it, isn't it honey? we're starting on year 37, correct? That's correct. And, look forward to another great year and many more. So with that said, John and Joe are gonna say goodbye. Goodbye for now and we'll talk to you later. Okay. Bye bye.
