Edward Theodore Gein was born on August 27th, 1906, 49 00:03:12,120 --> 00:03:15,120 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. 50 00:03:15,120 --> 00:03:23,120 He was the second of two sons born to George and August Augusta Gein, almost missed her name up. 51 00:03:23,120 --> 00:03:31,120 His father, George, so he was an alcoholic and mostly unemployed from what we've seen or read. 52 00:03:31,120 --> 00:03:39,120 His mother, Augusta, she ruled that house and she ruled it with fear, she ruled it with religion, 53 00:03:39,120 --> 00:03:49,120 she was extremely controlling and she was obsessed with the idea that women and sex were sinful. 54 00:03:49,120 --> 00:03:54,120 Eventually she moved the family to a remote farmhouse in Plainfield, Wisconsin. 55 00:03:54,120 --> 00:03:56,120 That's where she isolated. 56 00:03:56,120 --> 00:04:05,120 Isolate, thank you Dawn, and his brother Henry from everyone else, she read them passages from the Bible, 57 00:04:05,120 --> 00:04:10,120 mostly the Old Testament, and that was all just about Punishment and Sin. 58 00:04:10,120 --> 00:04:15,120 It's like she wanted to create this world where only her beliefs existed. 59 00:04:15,120 --> 00:04:21,120 Unfortunately, Edward worshiped her. She was his entire universe. 60 00:04:21,120 --> 00:04:29,120 Exactly, and when his brother Henry kind of started questioning what was going on and what his mother was trying to teach us to do of them, 61 00:04:29,120 --> 00:04:33,120 that really infuriated Ed, and he defended his mother. 62 00:04:33,120 --> 00:04:42,120 Then in 1940, Ed's father died from heart failure, probably due to alcoholism, and then after that, 63 00:04:42,120 --> 00:04:50,120 Ed and Henry, they took some odd jobs around town, they did things like handiwork, baby sitting, which is a little odd. 64 00:04:50,120 --> 00:04:53,120 I'm really confused by the baby sitting. 65 00:04:53,120 --> 00:04:56,120 Right, and they did things like farm labor. 66 00:04:56,120 --> 00:05:02,120 The people in Plainfield actually thought Ed was kind and pretty much harmless. 67 00:05:02,120 --> 00:05:13,120 He was quite, polite, maybe a little strange, but they didn't think that he would ever do anything like this and considered him to be a pretty trustworthy guy. 68 00:05:13,120 --> 00:05:21,120 In 1944, tragedy struck again, Henry died during a fire on their property. 69 00:05:21,120 --> 00:05:28,120 It's not confirmed, but they did say that the circumstances were kind of weird. 70 00:05:28,120 --> 00:05:35,120 Yeah, it was very weird. The fire burned through a marsh, and when they found Henry's body, he had bruises on his head. 71 00:05:35,120 --> 00:05:44,120 Ed claimed that it was an accident, but there were whispers that maybe it wasn't. the authorities, of course, never proved that. 72 00:05:44,120 --> 00:05:50,120 But some thought Ed might have had something to do with his brother's passing. 73 00:05:50,120 --> 00:05:56,120 And then with Henry gone, now Ed was completely alone with Augusta. 74 00:05:56,120 --> 00:06:04,120 Then probably just from the stress of Henry, obviously not proven, but she suffered a stroke soon after. 75 00:06:04,120 --> 00:06:15,120 And then Ed cared for her until she died in December of 1945. And you can only imagine, obviously her death devastated him. 76 00:06:15,120 --> 00:06:18,120 Some people think that just kind of broke his mind. 77 00:06:18,120 --> 00:06:23,120 He went as far as to board up her room and a few other rooms in the house. 78 00:06:23,120 --> 00:06:29,120 He wanted to keep them exactly the way that she had them, sort of like a shrine. 79 00:06:29,120 --> 00:06:33,120 But if you would look at the rest of the house, it was trashed. 80 00:06:33,120 --> 00:06:38,120 And then with his mom gone, he started slipping into this obsession. 81 00:06:38,120 --> 00:06:50,120 He started reading these magazines, books about anatomy, Nazis, and super casual reading about cannibalism. 82 00:06:50,120 --> 00:06:57,120 Yeah, and eventually that led him to digging up graves in the local cemetery. 83 00:06:57,120 --> 00:07:08,120 He admitted later that he'd go out late at night and exume recently buried women who reminded him of his mom. 84 00:07:08,120 --> 00:07:10,120 He'd bring these bodies home. 85 00:07:10,120 --> 00:07:14,120 This is where it gets graphic and horrifying. 86 00:07:14,120 --> 00:07:19,120 He would use their body parts to make things. 87 00:07:19,120 --> 00:07:26,120 He was quite the artistic fella. He made furniture, mask, even clothing. 88 00:07:26,120 --> 00:07:37,120 Police later found lampshades made a human skin, bowls made from skulls, and he even had a belt made out of nipples in his collection. 89 00:07:37,120 --> 00:07:41,120 I like how you call them artistic fellow. 90 00:07:41,120 --> 00:07:43,120 Made that true. 91 00:07:43,120 --> 00:07:44,120 Yeah. 92 00:07:44,120 --> 00:07:45,120 Head of vision. 93 00:07:45,120 --> 00:07:46,120 Yeah. 94 00:07:46,120 --> 00:07:49,120 It was like something clearly out of a nightmare. 95 00:07:49,120 --> 00:07:50,120 But real. 96 00:07:50,120 --> 00:08:00,120 Plainfield was a really small town. No one expected that Ed Geen was living in this house of horrors. 97 00:08:00,120 --> 00:08:06,120 No, and in 1954, local tabern owner Mary Hogan went missing. 98 00:08:06,120 --> 00:08:10,120 Her bar was empty, but there was blood on the floor. 99 00:08:10,120 --> 00:08:15,120 No one had any idea what had happened to her until three years later. 100 00:08:15,120 --> 00:08:25,120 That day, November 16, 1957, Bernice Warden, so she owned the local hardware store in town and she disappeared. 101 00:08:25,120 --> 00:08:35,120 Her son, Frank, he came back to the hardware store that afternoon and he found blood on the floor and the cash register was gone. 102 00:08:35,120 --> 00:08:38,120 And suspicion immediately turned to Ed. 103 00:08:38,120 --> 00:08:46,120 He'd been one of the last customers in the store and had told Bernice that he'd return in the morning for antifreeze. 104 00:08:46,120 --> 00:08:52,120 And then when police went to his farm to question him, "Done, done, done." 105 00:08:52,120 --> 00:08:55,120 They didn't just find that evidence. 106 00:08:55,120 --> 00:08:58,120 They found the craziest scene. 107 00:08:58,120 --> 00:09:03,120 Bernice Warden's body was actually hanging in the shed, gutted like a deer. 108 00:09:03,120 --> 00:09:15,120 And in the documentary, the police had said that it was nighttime and so they thought it was a deer, but then when they looked closer, it wasn't. 109 00:09:15,120 --> 00:09:17,120 No, no, it was not a deer. 110 00:09:17,120 --> 00:09:23,120 And when they moved to the inside of the house, they discovered the remains of at least 15 women. 111 00:09:23,120 --> 00:09:27,120 Though, Gein claimed he'd only killed two. 112 00:09:27,120 --> 00:09:29,120 Bernice Warden and Mary Hogan. 113 00:09:29,120 --> 00:09:33,120 The rest, he said, were dug up from the graves. 114 00:09:33,120 --> 00:09:46,120 Ed Gein was arrested immediately and when questioned, he was calm, almost childlike, and hopefully you heard that on the little clip that I played, he was very calm. 115 00:09:46,120 --> 00:09:51,120 And he seemed confused about why everyone was so horrified. 116 00:09:51,120 --> 00:10:05,120 I think that he maybe thought that since these people were already deceased, that he didn't really do anything wrong, I don't know, that's just kind of what I guess. 117 00:10:05,120 --> 00:10:10,120 It kind of sounds like you might be right. 118 00:10:10,120 --> 00:10:25,120 So, authorities quickly declared him mentally incompetent in 1958. He was found unfit to stand trial and sent a central state hospital for the criminally insane and Wupon, Wisconsin. 119 00:10:25,120 --> 00:10:36,120 So, he stayed there for over a decade and then at that point, doctors said he was competent enough for trial and in 1968, he faced the court. 120 00:10:36,120 --> 00:10:46,120 That was for the murder of Bernice Warden. He waved his right to a jury, the judge found him guilty, of course, but legally insane. 121 00:10:46,120 --> 00:10:51,120 So, instead of prison, Ed was sent back to the Central State Hospital. 122 00:10:51,120 --> 00:11:02,120 And he actually lived out the rest of his life in mental institutions. They said he was quiet, compliant, and even helpful to the staff. 123 00:11:02,120 --> 00:11:09,120 Well, it probably didn't hurt the fact that he was assessed and medicated. True. 124 00:11:09,120 --> 00:11:19,120 Ed reportedly liked reading, painting, and doing chores. When people visited or asked questions, he acted like he didn't understand what the big deal was. 125 00:11:19,120 --> 00:11:25,120 The doc said he seemed to thrive better because of the structure he got. 126 00:11:25,120 --> 00:11:27,120 That makes sense. It does. 127 00:11:27,120 --> 00:11:38,120 And then he died on July 26, 1984. He was 77 and he died from respiratory failure due to cancer. 128 00:11:38,120 --> 00:11:48,120 Get this. Even his grave become a curiosity. People chipped away pieces of the headstone until it was eventually stolen in 2000. 129 00:11:48,120 --> 00:11:52,120 It was recovered in 2001 and placed in storage. 130 00:11:52,120 --> 00:12:02,120 He doesn't have a headstone because our friend Tim @Inthepresenceofothersparanormal goes to his grave site on a regular basis. 131 00:12:02,120 --> 00:12:05,120 And there is no headstone there. 132 00:12:05,120 --> 00:12:13,120 As we know, his crimes inspired some of these horror characters/movies. Amy talked about them. 133 00:12:13,120 --> 00:12:22,120 Earlier Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface, which is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and then Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lams. 134 00:12:22,120 --> 00:12:38,120 Yeah, he never set out to be evil in a cinematic sense. But his warped devotion to his mother and total psychological collapse made him one of the most steady criminal cases in American history. 135 00:12:38,120 --> 00:12:49,120 I really know it's going to be a very unpopular opinion. But I do have empathy for him. 136 00:12:49,120 --> 00:12:50,120 I do. 137 00:12:50,120 --> 00:12:52,120 I totally get it. I do. 138 00:12:52,120 --> 00:12:57,120 I have such a hard time and I think we talked about this before. 139 00:12:57,120 --> 00:13:02,120 The things that his mom did clearly messed with his head. 140 00:13:02,120 --> 00:13:10,120 Listen, I feel horrible that she did that and all that. So I do. She was ill too though. 141 00:13:10,120 --> 00:13:14,120 I know. I just, yeah. I think. 142 00:13:14,120 --> 00:13:21,120 But our all murderers, I just have a hard time. I'm kind of like, okay, you turn 18. You're an adult now. 143 00:13:21,120 --> 00:13:25,120 And listen, this was a long time ago. It's different than it is now. 144 00:13:25,120 --> 00:13:32,120 But you turn 18, go handle your shit. Like go get your brain fixed. Go get your mental illness. 145 00:13:32,120 --> 00:13:40,120 Looked at and assessed and go talk to someone. I don't know. It's obviously I feel that way because of what happened in my family. 146 00:13:40,120 --> 00:13:44,120 Right. But I totally understand what you're saying. 147 00:13:44,120 --> 00:13:50,120 I mean, my question is if he had had the support he needed and a little bit different of a raising. 148 00:13:50,120 --> 00:13:52,120 Could this have maybe been another outcome? 149 00:13:52,120 --> 00:14:00,120 Right. Yeah, and prevent. Yeah. Yeah. I got it. I think that whenever we have mass murders, which is like every day now. 150 00:14:00,120 --> 00:14:05,120 I wonder about that. If there was early intervention in school or something. 151 00:14:05,120 --> 00:14:09,120 Something. I don't know the right answers, but something. 152 00:14:09,120 --> 00:14:16,120 And then also he was isolated. He was out. His mom moved them out to the middle of nowhere. 153 00:14:16,120 --> 00:14:23,120 And then what you said, mental illness. I don't know. It's not it's like super chilling, not just because of what he did. 154 00:14:23,120 --> 00:14:32,120 But he's the quiet man next door, which makes it like this could happen to anyone at any time. 155 00:14:32,120 --> 00:14:36,120 Oh, exactly. The monster wasn't hiding in the woods per se. 156 00:14:36,120 --> 00:14:42,120 He was living in plain sight right with the rest of the community. 157 00:14:42,120 --> 00:14:47,120 When he was arrested, he was having dinner with his neighbors. 158 00:14:47,120 --> 00:14:49,120 Right. Yeah. 159 00:14:49,120 --> 00:14:54,120 I don't know how else to say this and I'm the direct one. So I'm just going to say it. 160 00:14:54,120 --> 00:15:06,120 On a level of one to 10, Ed Geen is a 10 out of 10 for me. He's my favorite serial killer, if you will, because this is next level. 161 00:15:06,120 --> 00:15:13,120 And I find his brain fascinating. Obviously not in a I love serial killers. 162 00:15:13,120 --> 00:15:17,120 Right. Right. Right. Just you know what I mean. 163 00:15:17,120 --> 00:15:27,120 There's a lot to him and the things that he did that the normal person doesn't understand. 164 00:15:27,120 --> 00:15:30,120 So I get what you're saying. I do. 165 00:15:30,120 --> 00:15:37,120 Exactly. It's not just I murdered someone and left their body and went home. 166 00:15:37,120 --> 00:15:39,120 Right. This is different. 167 00:15:39,120 --> 00:15:48,120 Almost definitely. I mean, and even if you take out, which we're not going to take the murders out because that's very, very important. 168 00:15:48,120 --> 00:15:59,120 Yeah, it's just awful. But for someone to think that it's okay to go to a cemetery and dig up people, 169 00:15:59,120 --> 00:16:05,120 get what you want from there or either just take the whole thing. It's not like a shopping center. 170 00:16:05,120 --> 00:16:10,120 That to me is what makes she what can make a person think that's okay. 171 00:16:10,120 --> 00:16:16,120 Well, and it makes me think to the part where he was reading those books about Nazis and whatnot, cannibalism and all that. 172 00:16:16,120 --> 00:16:23,120 When you combine that with mental illness, this is probably where we get a lot of current day mass murders. 173 00:16:23,120 --> 00:16:33,120 You know, they have something mental going on and then they're reading all this wacky outrageous shit on the internet all the time. 174 00:16:33,120 --> 00:16:35,120 You know, it's like there you go. 175 00:16:35,120 --> 00:16:39,120 A switch gets flipped. It's yeah, I get what you're saying. 176 00:16:39,120 --> 00:16:51,120 Maybe there's a switch per se or however you would like to call it that gets flipped and then you become the monster. 177 00:16:51,120 --> 00:16:55,120 Or you're not just Ed Gein anymore. 178 00:16:55,120 --> 00:16:57,120 Speaking of monsters. 179 00:16:57,120 --> 00:17:00,120 Oh, yeah, speaking of monsters. 180 00:17:00,120 --> 00:17:08,120 Of course, when you go into a show like Monsters, we've seen them. There's several of them now. 181 00:17:08,120 --> 00:17:11,120 And what Lizzie Borden's coming up next, isn't it? 182 00:17:11,120 --> 00:17:12,120 Yep. 183 00:17:12,120 --> 00:17:14,120 Yeah, so I mean, yeah, we've seen them. 184 00:17:14,120 --> 00:17:26,120 They aren't made to go with what actually happened. Of course, it's made, it's dramatized and it's made to sell the whole time that I was watching. 185 00:17:26,120 --> 00:17:28,120 Though I'm back ticking. 186 00:17:28,120 --> 00:17:32,120 I don't, this just wasn't my favorite. 187 00:17:32,120 --> 00:17:39,120 We, we did finish it Shannon and I and I was confused part of it for one. 188 00:17:39,120 --> 00:17:45,120 All the flip flop and back and forth in the scenes and I don't know. 189 00:17:45,120 --> 00:17:50,120 What are you, I know you haven't completely finished it, but what do you think? 190 00:17:50,120 --> 00:17:54,120 I watched four episodes, which I think is about half of. 191 00:17:54,120 --> 00:17:56,120 Yeah, it's eight episodes. 192 00:17:56,120 --> 00:17:58,120 Okay, so I'm halfway through. 193 00:17:58,120 --> 00:18:06,120 I really, really enjoyed the first monsters. It was the Jeffrey Dahmer one with Evan Peters. 194 00:18:06,120 --> 00:18:15,120 I feel like, and maybe I don't know if I'm just remembering it wrong, but I feel like that one was slightly more factual. 195 00:18:15,120 --> 00:18:19,120 And then we got to the Menendez Brothers. 196 00:18:19,120 --> 00:18:22,120 Menendez Brothers, yes. 197 00:18:22,120 --> 00:18:35,120 Admittedly, I watched the first one and got pissed because you and I had covered them and I just know how off they were making the brothers look. 198 00:18:35,120 --> 00:18:39,120 And I got irritated and only watched the first one. 199 00:18:39,120 --> 00:18:42,120 So I got through four of them for Ed Gein. 200 00:18:42,120 --> 00:18:47,120 It's very, very not factual. 201 00:18:47,120 --> 00:18:49,120 I don't know the percent, 10%. 202 00:18:49,120 --> 00:18:50,120 I don't know. 203 00:18:50,120 --> 00:18:56,120 I just feel like sure you and I are sitting there and I know other people who said the same thing. 204 00:18:56,120 --> 00:19:02,120 They were on their phone checking facts, but not everyone's going to do that. 205 00:19:02,120 --> 00:19:07,120 I know it's a show. It's not a documentary. I get that. 206 00:19:07,120 --> 00:19:11,120 But can we even just do like 50/50 reality? 207 00:19:11,120 --> 00:19:14,120 We've discussed this before. 208 00:19:14,120 --> 00:19:24,120 At what point when you go to remake a show and put an actual individual's name tied to it? 209 00:19:24,120 --> 00:19:29,120 I'm going to say it. How disrespectful is it to add that much jump? 210 00:19:29,120 --> 00:19:32,120 Don't even put their name attached. 211 00:19:32,120 --> 00:19:41,120 If it's only going to be 10% factual, why did just make a show about a random person? 212 00:19:41,120 --> 00:19:51,120 Because you can watch Psycho, you can watch Texas Chainsaw Massager and it's different. 213 00:19:51,120 --> 00:19:55,120 You know, okay, they made it with that idea in mind. 214 00:19:55,120 --> 00:20:01,120 But I don't know. I was just so disappointed. I'm not going to lie. I was very disappointed. 215 00:20:01,120 --> 00:20:06,120 And Ryan Murphy, so he did, well, he does American Horror Story. 216 00:20:06,120 --> 00:20:10,120 And he's done a ton of things. One of my favorite shows of all times was Pose. 217 00:20:10,120 --> 00:20:13,120 And Ryan Murphy did Pose. 218 00:20:13,120 --> 00:20:21,120 I just, the last, I don't know, half of the seasons of American Horror Story didn't do it for me. 219 00:20:21,120 --> 00:20:26,120 I stopped watching, honestly. Again, this first monsters I did enjoy. 220 00:20:26,120 --> 00:20:30,120 And then these last two, I just didn't. It's for me. 221 00:20:30,120 --> 00:20:34,120 I always feel like Ryan Murphy starts out strong and then falls off somehow. 222 00:20:34,120 --> 00:20:41,120 I am interested to watch a Lizzie Borden one though and see what direction they take. 223 00:20:41,120 --> 00:20:46,120 But Ed Geins didn't, didn't do it for me. 224 00:20:46,120 --> 00:20:47,120 No. 225 00:20:47,120 --> 00:20:52,120 I agree with you. It was probably about 10% actual facts. 226 00:20:52,120 --> 00:20:59,120 He didn't have a girlfriend and that was like such a huge part of the series. 227 00:20:59,120 --> 00:21:03,120 And I do know a lot of people who didn't like. 228 00:21:03,120 --> 00:21:08,120 In fact, I don't know any, well, I know one person who did like it. 229 00:21:08,120 --> 00:21:12,120 The whole split of Anthony Perkins Psycho. 230 00:21:12,120 --> 00:21:19,120 It was a whole different storyline. It was like two shows in one. 231 00:21:19,120 --> 00:21:22,120 And most people did not like that. 232 00:21:22,120 --> 00:21:27,120 If you're listening and you thought it was good that, yeah, I get it. 233 00:21:27,120 --> 00:21:30,120 Like how somebody could watch that and joy it. 234 00:21:30,120 --> 00:21:39,120 But I'm more so look, when I hear the name, I'm more so look for his actual story than all, you know, the extra stuff. 235 00:21:39,120 --> 00:21:42,120 So that's why disappoints me so much. 236 00:21:42,120 --> 00:21:48,120 And I get that. I feel I think we're too close to it doing what we do. 237 00:21:48,120 --> 00:21:51,120 I like facts and actual history. 238 00:21:51,120 --> 00:21:53,120 Yeah, exactly. 239 00:21:53,120 --> 00:21:55,120 That's just me. 240 00:21:55,120 --> 00:22:04,120 The good note, the documentary, which was Unseen Confessions From the Real Life Psycho on YouTube. 241 00:22:04,120 --> 00:22:05,120 And it was pretty good. 242 00:22:05,120 --> 00:22:10,120 Yeah, we that was what I watched directly after Monsters. 243 00:22:10,120 --> 00:22:17,120 I was looking for something that was long enough that you could actually have enough information and go back and forth. 244 00:22:17,120 --> 00:22:26,120 I did see one on there where they were comparing the facts with what actually happened and what they said happened on Monsters. 245 00:22:26,120 --> 00:22:29,120 I just didn't watch that one. I went ahead and chose this one. 246 00:22:29,120 --> 00:22:32,120 Yeah, it's sure it's under an hour. 247 00:22:32,120 --> 00:22:35,120 So it's 49 minutes. 248 00:22:35,120 --> 00:22:38,120 I'm more I guess a facts person. 249 00:22:38,120 --> 00:22:40,120 I don't know. 250 00:22:40,120 --> 00:22:43,120 And I mean, they actually have interviews as well. 251 00:22:43,120 --> 00:22:45,120 And I like that. 252 00:22:45,120 --> 00:22:47,120 Oh, and there is the show. 253 00:22:47,120 --> 00:22:49,120 I think I talked about this before too. 254 00:22:49,120 --> 00:22:50,120 MGM plus. 255 00:22:50,120 --> 00:22:52,120 And they have, I think it's four parts. 256 00:22:52,120 --> 00:22:57,120 They have a show where that clip that I played came from. 257 00:22:57,120 --> 00:23:04,120 And I think it's called either the Lost Tapes or like A Real Confession or something like that. 258 00:23:04,120 --> 00:23:06,120 I think I've seen that. 259 00:23:06,120 --> 00:23:08,120 No, you couldn't you couldn't find it. 260 00:23:08,120 --> 00:23:10,120 It's on MGM plus. 261 00:23:10,120 --> 00:23:13,120 And then I think also it was on Amazon Prime. 262 00:23:13,120 --> 00:23:15,120 I don't know if it still is. 263 00:23:15,120 --> 00:23:24,120 That's where if people really want a great longer form series to listen to that is factual. 264 00:23:24,120 --> 00:23:29,120 Although there are already guys on there that have a podcast they're kind of annoying. 265 00:23:29,120 --> 00:23:32,120 So just know they're on there. 266 00:23:32,120 --> 00:23:34,120 I don't even know who they are. 267 00:23:34,120 --> 00:23:36,120 But the rest of it was amazing. 268 00:23:36,120 --> 00:23:42,120 And they play lots of parts from this interview of him when he got to the jail. 269 00:23:42,120 --> 00:23:43,120 Nice. 270 00:23:43,120 --> 00:23:48,120 Yeah, I mean, that's the stuff that I would rather hear. 271 00:23:48,120 --> 00:23:51,120 People that knew them knew the victims, him. 272 00:23:51,120 --> 00:23:52,120 You know?
