Everything Hurts

When your elderly parents won’t listen

Danielle Murr & Cheryl Fenton Season 1 Episode 7

With snow on the ground and Cheryl’s 79-year-old dad reaching for the shovel, Episode 7 takes her and Danielle’s conversation to a frustrating place – what to do when your elderly parents want to do too much. They discuss moving into caretaker roles and how parents can become difficult as they view these new limitations as attacks on their autonomy. They become who we once were – kids that won’t listen. Cheryl and Danielle address the “40-70 rule” as a timeframe for talking to your parents about how to care for themselves so they remain healthy and safe, as well as what their wishes are should they fall ill. They also address utilizing your town’s Council on Aging, to assist in the process. The ladies close out the show by laughing about another role reversal that’s inevitable – we will become our parents. So take notes on what your folks are doing, so you don’t do the same to your kids (which, let’s face it…you will anyway).
