Gym self-care: Cold plunges and hot saunas
In this Episode 17, Cheryl and Danielle discuss how their tolerance and patience have changed as they age, and one place the difference is very evident is at gym. Is no place sacred? When they aren’t yelling at people to shut up in the sauna, they’re giving the side eye to those who don’t wipe down their machines after use. However, the meat of this episode is actually spent discussing how to stay cool at the gym – in a cold plunge, that is. Cold water therapy stretches back as far as 3500 BC, when it was noted in the ancient Egyptian medical text The Edwin Smith Papyrus as restorative for the body. They discuss research about how these dips are specifically great for middle aged women dealing with inflammation and soreness. Add in time in the hot dry sauna, and you’ve got a great routine of self-care that goes beyond pumping iron and cardio (although those are important, too).
