The Making of a Champion: Time Management, Family Support, and Determination
Youth, passion, and rodeo excellence take center stage as we welcome Carson, an eighth-grade competitor who's quickly making a name for himself in junior rodeo. Fresh off an impressive showing at the Wildfire competition where he secured buckles in both Steer Dobbin and Breakaway, Carson shares the journey that's brought him to this point.
The chemistry between Carson and his trusted horse Pistol forms the cornerstone of his competitive success. Their partnership—built through countless hours of practice and mutual understanding—has yielded multiple victories and no less than three second-place finishes at recent events. With disarming honesty, Carson walks us through his pre-competition routine, from trailer packing to horse preparation, while offering a glimpse into how he manages the inevitable nerves that come before entering the box.
Family emerges as the foundation of Carson's rodeo pursuits. His father serves as both life coach and technical instructor, while sister Logan partners with him in team events. As he prepares to balance eighth-grade academics with his ambitious rodeo schedule, Carson offers wisdom beyond his years about time management challenges and his goals for the upcoming season. Whether discussing his professional inspirations or sharing fishing tales from ponds and ocean piers, Carson's genuine enthusiasm for both competition and camaraderie shines through. For parents and young riders alike, this conversation provides valuable insights into nurturing passion while navigating the practical demands of youth athletics.

All right, welcome to the Beasley Econ Podcast. We're here with one of our sponsored writers today, Mr Carson. How are you, sir? I'm good. Thanks for taking your time out of your day to sit down with us.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And you haven't started school yet. Not yet Next week, monday oh boy, what grade are you going to be in? Eighth, eighth already, holy cow. Are you excited or nervous?
Speaker 2:I'm pretty excited. I'm ready to get started.
Speaker 1:Yeah, your sister was complaining about homework. You think you'll have any homework. Oh yeah, it's not going to get any better. No, so what got you started in rodeo?
Speaker 2:Just watching everybody around me.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:I went to a couple of them that Avery was in and I wasn't in it and so I started entering with her and stuff like that yeah, and you enjoy it quite a bit.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, what horse are you riding right now?
Speaker 2:His name's Pistol.
Speaker 1:Pistol. Yeah, the gray horse, mm-hmm, we really like Pistol. Oh yeah, he's cool. What all do you do on him?
Speaker 2:I heel and break away and ribbon rope sometimes. What is ribbon roping? So you you have a roper and a runner. The rope will rope, the calf dally stop and the runner has to get the ribbon off their tail. Run back to the heel box stops time are you the rope or the runner? I'm the runner most of the time are you fast?
Speaker 1:no, who's your Roper? Avery, oh nice nice, nice, uh, miss pistol. Your favorite horse to ride yeah, right now how long have you had him?
Speaker 2:oh gosh, I guess it's been since, like last fall okay, I was thinking last year, what's?
Speaker 1:what's the favorite thing you do on him? Heel you know, yeah, who's your header avery, avery.
Speaker 2:she's a pretty good hand, isn't she? Yeah?
Speaker 1:Yeah, she's a pretty solid team. What about the? What's the first you got a buckle on? Did you win that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I won this last weekend. Oh Wildfire, Yep.
Speaker 1:Yep, your sister really wants to win a buckle. Yeah, she won a saddle, that's pretty good.
Speaker 2:She's won two saddles.
Speaker 1:Two. What all did you win last weekend at Wildfire?
Speaker 2:Steer Dobbin and Breakaway Nice.
Speaker 1:And what did you take home from that?
Speaker 2:Two buckles from that, and then I got second and a lot of other stuff.
Speaker 1:I saw a picture with some saddle pads. Yeah, three of them, I think yeah.
Speaker 2:All the second place saddle pads. I got them.
Speaker 1:You had the second place locked down. Huh yeah, so you rodeo with a lot of your friends and family yeah um. I know most of them and you kids are a lot of fun. Do you have any really funny memories from a any specific thing? No, no, I mean not necessarily anything like specific, it's just hanging out yeah, avery was talking about the time she fell off and landed in the dirt. I don't remember that, or not? Avery Logan? Yeah, I've been called her Avery all day.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I do remember that that was funny.
Speaker 1:Yeah, she just got up and shook it off. Yeah, yeah. So when you're getting ready for a rodeo on the weekend or a show or something, what do you do to prepare?
Speaker 2:Just make sure everything's organized. Get everything loaded in the trailer. Give your horse a a bath. Get everything ready to go. Make sure you've got everything before you take off yeah, and do you ride every day?
Speaker 1:and not every day I tried to ride so your horses are pretty well in shape and ready to roll anytime you grab them yep, nice. Um, I guess your parents probably help a lot too, right? Oh yeah, yeah, is your dad a pretty big inspiration for you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, for sure he helped me rope a lot.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so do you. I remember the. I went with your grandpa actually to Louisville.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think it was this state fair or something.
Speaker 1:But we rode in Freedom Hall Okay, and that was like the biggest place I've ever been in.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I remember being super nervous.
Speaker 1:Do you ever get nervous before any of these?
Speaker 2:events. Yeah, right, when you're back in the box.
Speaker 1:Yeah, how do you handle your nerves for that?
Speaker 2:It's just trying not to think about it. Just go do it.
Speaker 1:Yep, yeah. Well, you put in a lot of practice too, though, don't you, yeah, try to, yeah, just muscle memory, who would you consider your coach?
Speaker 2:my dad, yeah, riding and roping everything yeah, he's.
Speaker 1:He's my life coach yeah kind of I do ask for advice every now and again. Yeah, what else do you do to keep your horses healthy and happy and ready to grab them and go?
Speaker 2:Keep them well fed, keep them in shape.
Speaker 1:You got a good farrier. Oh yeah, who's your farrier? My?
Speaker 2:dad, of course.
Speaker 1:You're going to be in eighth grade. You go to New Hope.
Speaker 2:Yep.
Speaker 1:What's the hardest part about going to school? I mean, you've been off all summer but now that you're back in the school routine and weekend rodeos. What's the hardest part about that?
Speaker 2:Just being able to ride. It's like you know you get home and you got all your stuff to do and then if you have spare time then you can go ride and go rope, but it's just having time to do all of it, yeah, and time management is tricky, yeah, and it's just going to get worse. Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:So practice that now.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And get good at it. No scrolling on Facebook. Do you have a Facebook?
Speaker 2:No.
Speaker 1:Good, do you have a professional rodeo hero?
Speaker 2:Yes, junior, I guess you could say I watch him a lot, do you, junior, and joseph harrison? Yeah, as I watch a lot on the internet youtube yeah, um.
Speaker 1:So you and pistol, you guys are pretty tight yeah is that a bond you've built, just being around him so much and riding and getting to know him, or how do you?
Speaker 2:yeah, riding him a bunch figuring him out. I guess he figured me out. You could say over time.
Speaker 1:Yeah, if you could. I was talking to Logan about it. There's some kids out there that are probably thinking about you know they may ride a little but not necessarily compete or do the rodeo. Do you have any advice for any of kids listening of of how to get started or what, what to do?
Speaker 2:I get if you're wanting to rope. I just think you just got to rope the dummy a lot and just riding as much as you can, learning to ride, yeah, and it's pretty hard to put those two things together at first yeah, it's like trying to pat your head and rub your belly. It's like multitasking.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you got any big goals this season.
Speaker 2:Well, I'm hoping to make it to both finals the Little Bridges and Junior High and then hopefully win something there. I think the biggest goal is just qualify for both those finals.
Speaker 1:Yeah, when are finals for those, do you know?
Speaker 2:July. It's like end of June, start of July.
Speaker 1:Oh, so next, next year? Yeah, next summer.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's already been finals this year.
Speaker 1:So hopefully we'll be sitting down with you this time next year talking about everything you won. Yeah, that would be awesome. That would be cool, get, get another buckle.
Speaker 2:oh yeah, saddle yeah, that'd be awesome. A trailer I heard you can win a trailer, murray. Oh really yeah, and murray, they're doing the all-around gets a horse trailer that's awesome.
Speaker 1:That'd make mom and dad happy. Probably, yeah, probably, more than a buckle yeah, for sure so if you could, um, if you could give pistol a superpower, what would you give him? You can wave a magic wand.
Speaker 2:I don't know, maybe be able to run harder and stop harder, I mean.
Speaker 1:You know what I would give him? I would give him the ability to talk.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, that'd be cool.
Speaker 1:So when he comes in here I can say what's wrong, pistol, yeah and he can tell me.
Speaker 2:That would be cool.
Speaker 1:Save us a lot of sweat. Oh yeah, yeah, so you're also a fisherman. Oh yeah, you're also a fisherman. Oh yeah, You've been fishing much this summer.
Speaker 2:Not as much this summer as what I have been.
Speaker 1:What do you mainly fish for?
Speaker 2:Just bass in the pond.
Speaker 1:Yeah, worms, yeah, like the plastic worms.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's my favorite, that's what works the best in there.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:They're pretty simple fish yeah. Do you ever fish in the ocean? I guess I've done it once, like off the bank. I went to this resort and they had fishing rods you could rent. I just went and like fished off the bank, caught those little like snapper things or whatever they're called.
Speaker 1:Catching stingrays. No, I fished from the beach at Gulf Shores and that's all I caught was stingrays.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Or some type of rays, I don't know. I didn't get close enough, I just let them go. Yeah, I did fish at the pier at Gulf Shores or some type of rays, I don't know.
Speaker 2:I didn't get close enough, I just let them go. Yeah, I like the ocean.
Speaker 1:I did fish at the pier at Gulf Shores. If you ever go down there, that's fun. Yeah, mainly Spanish mackerel.
Speaker 2:Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1:But there's so many sharks. If you don't reel the fish in fast enough, you'll just reel up a fish head.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I've seen that.
Speaker 1:And they used a thing called these bubble rigs, which was like a plastic bobber, and then you had about three foot behind it with a treble hook.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And you know those like neon things that hold your sunglasses on.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:You cut those and just put that over the treble hook.
Speaker 2:Really.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and you just kind of fish it like a topwater bait, yeah, but when the sharks see it land, they just go up behind it and follow it.
Speaker 2:Wait for something to take it, yeah, and then they'll try to get it. That's smart.
Speaker 1:Yeah, there's some big sharks down there yeah. We went there the first day of vacation and walked out on the pier and I was like, okay, I'm not getting in the ocean.
Speaker 2:We went snorkeling in the Keys over a reef and there was a lot of nurse sharks and a couple reef sharks.
Speaker 1:But those don't bite you right.
Speaker 2:No, they won't get you. They just lay on the bottom, yeah.
Speaker 1:Just any jellyfish.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. On the way out we came through a big old school of them. I guess I don't know what A bunch on top of the water.
Speaker 1:Call it not getting in the water. Yeah, but all right. Well, you probably better go get ready for school. Yeah, have you shopped? Got all your back-to-school clothes?
Speaker 2:No, I mean, we got a little bit, but not much.
Speaker 1:Got all your crayons. No, but, carson, thanks for stopping by today and thanks to all of our partners. With this, you get to I think you already picked all yours up, but protect gi a bunch of hats, um, all kinds of good stuff so thank you yeah, we're.
