Welcome back to Episode 62!  We are getting ready to start memorizing Psalm 23!  I hope that you were able to get a bit familiar with the Psalm last week by reading and diving in ahead of time and making lists about The Lord and David.  Maybe you will want to continue to make lists about other keywords as you study God’s word!  If you learned anything interesting while you were digging a bit deeper in Psalm 23,  I would love for you to leave a comment on my blog or  send me a message via the link in the show notes where it says, send us a text!

As we start to venture into Psalm 23 I wanted to update y'all that we will be adding a new kind of podcast that will encompass reviewing while you are doing something active, such as walking, driving, cooking etc.  This will show up after you have learned 2 verses and will encompass all of the verses you have learned up to that point.  This is an option for anyone who likes to walk or do any form of activity while listening to a podcast.  I think you will really like it because it will be a time of review on the go!

So for this week we will be memorizing two verses through a sequence of four engaging episodes: two focused on learning the verses, one for prayerful reflection, and one designed for active review which is perfect for listening while walking, working, or moving through your day.

Before we start today let's pray

Lord, I ask that you would still our hearts and minds as we start this week.  You know our circumstances. Help us to look up heavenward as we live our lives daily.  Today, give us the ability to focus on verse 1

Alright—go ahead and grab your notecard, journal, or whatever you’re using today. Take a moment to make sure you’ve got your pen or pencil ready too. I'll go ahead and read the verse out loud as you gather your things.

And just a quick note: when I’m preparing to memorize Scripture and I see something like “ A Psalm of David,” I personally choose not to include that part on my card or commit it to memory. But that’s completely up to you—feel free to do what works best for your flow

[Psa 23:1 ESV] A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Take a moment now to write verse 1 on your note card or paper AND the First letters on the back of the notecard. If you're unsure about what I mean by first letter, check out the link in the show notes.  Alrighty then,  I'll give you about 45 seconds to write out the verse AND the First letters on the back.”

As we step into the second part of our time together, where we focus on today’s new verse, go ahead and choose a memorization method that works best for you.”   Here is a little reminder for everyone, there is no perfect method, so if you already like a way of reviewing that I have not listed please go with that!

Alright, if you have you have decided on the method your going to use today, take the next 1.5 minutes to work on learning verse 1

Let’s transition into the final section: "Review All Verses Together."  Today your task will be easier because it's just 1 verse. You might want to explore a different way to review than what you did earlier today — like trying voice inflections, adding movement, or even sketching out a drawing while you go over the material.  Take 1.5 minutes to work on reviewing these verses.  Pause the podcast if you need more time.

I have long appreciated the teaching ministry of Pastor Stephen Davey. Before becoming a member of The Shepherd's Church, I regularly listened to him online through Wisdom for the Heart, and his messages deeply shaped my spiritual growth. As we end todays podcast quote from his 2014 sermon, Introducing the Creator-Shepherd, which can help us see continues to speak powerfully into our understanding of God's character.

“ David effectively writes, “The great all-powerful, self-sustaining, timeless God… has stepped into my time and my space and has become my personal Leader. The creator God is interested in my puny little world.  And the more we know about the world, the smaller we become.”  Davey, Stephen. “(Psalms 23:1–2) Introducing the Creator-Shepherd.” Wisdom International, January 5, 2014. Accessed August 5, 2025. Wisdom International Psalm 23 Lesson.

Think about this a bit.   “The great all-powerful, self-sustaining, timeless God . . . has stepped into my time and my space and has become my personal Leader.”

The creator God is interested in my puny little world.

AlI I have to say is Wow!! What an amazing mighty all powerful God we have near us at all times. This concept is hard to grasp at times but is it Truth.  Ruminate over the verse today. The Lord Is My Shepherd, I shall not want.

Here are a few quotes from the book I have been reading from the book A Shepherds look at Psalm 23

page 23 “Yet, the staggering fact remains that Christ, the creator of the universe of overwhelming magnitude, deigns to call Himself my Shepherd and invites me to consider myself his sheep- His special object of affection and attention. Who could better care for me?”

As you go about your day, think about what it means to not be in want.  Are you in an area that you feel content?  How will you respond to the Lord who is your shepherd today?
