Before we met on Earth, chapter five, the secret inside the suitcase. Some things are hidden to protect us. Others are hidden until we are ready to remember the story keeper. Click, click. The clasp had opened. Michael held his breath. The forest had become impossibly still. No birds, no breeze. Even the gentle stream beside him seemed to pause, as though the world itself was waiting. Very slowly, Michael lifted the lid. Inside there was no treasure, no gold, no forgotten fortune. Only three objects rested neatly inside the old leather suitcase. An aged brass key, a folded letter, and a faded photograph. Michael blinked. That's it. Someone had hidden this suitcase beneath the stones as though it held the greatest secret in the world. Yet inside were only ordinary things. Or so they seemed. Still, something about them made his heart beat faster. He reached for the photograph. The edges were worn soft with age. The image showed two children standing beneath an enormous oak tree. A girl, a boy, about his age. Their faces were faded, as though time itself had tried to erase them. Yet the feeling remained. He didn't know them. Or perhaps he remembered them. He turned the photograph over. Six words were written in elegant handwriting. Remember what was promised before. Michael frowned. Before what? Only silence answered. He carefully laid the photograph beside him and picked up the brass key. It was heavier than he expected, more, as though someone had been holding it only moments ago. Carved into its center was a tiny symbol, a compass, surrounded by circles of stars. His fingers traced the engraving. A strange ache filled his chest. Not sadness, longing. The kind of longing you feel when trying to remember a dream that disappears the moment you wake. Finally, he unfolded the letter. The paper crackled softly with age. There was no greeting, no signature, only one sentence written in deep blue ink. When the compass awakens, do not seek the path. Let the path seek you. Michael read it again. Compass. What compass? Before another thought could form, the wind returned, not as a breeze, as a rush. Leaves spiraled into the air. The photograph fluttered, the letter trembled. The old suitcase groaned. And somewhere, far beyond the forest, something else has awakened. Three hundred miles away, Mary sat beneath the listening tree. The afternoon sunlight danced through the branches. The small brass compass rested quietly in her palm. And without warning, the needle moved once, twice, then faster. Round and round it spun until it became a blur of gold. Mary's heart began to pound. She stood so quickly the compass slipped from her hand and landed softly in the grass. Yet the needle continued turning. She looked towards the western hills, towards a place she had never seen, towards someone she had never met. Then, without sound, without words, she felt it. Not a voice, not a thought, a presence. So familiar that tears filled her eyes before she understood why. She pressed her hand against her heart. I know you, she whispered. The wind answered by carrying the scent of rain across the fields, and just as suddenly as it had begun, the compass went still, pointing west. Far beyond forest, far beyond clocks, far beyond the stars, the story keeper sat behind the ancient book. His fountain pen rested motionless. He wasn't writing, he was watching. Words appeared across the page by themselves, one line at a time. His expression slowly changed. No, he whispered. The room behind him grew colder. The familiar figure stepped from the shadows. It has begun. The storekeeper closed his eyes. They were not meant to remember this soon. You knew this day would come. I hoped, his voice faltered, that they would have more time. The stranger looked towards Earth. The suitcase has chosen. The storekeeper slowly opened the ancient book once more. No, his voice was quiet. It has answered. Silence filled the room. Then the ink began writing again. The storekeeper read the words. His face lost all color. Very softly he whispered. So it remembers. The stranger frowned. What remembers? The storekeeper never answered, because at that exact moment, three hundred miles apart, Mary gasped. Michael dropped the photograph. Neither of them understood why, but both heard the same sound. Not with their ears, with their souls. A child laughing. It echoed only once, gentle, joyful, filled with a love that neither of them could explain. Then silence. Michael slowly looked back inside the suitcase. The key, the letter, the photograph. They were still there. But they were no longer alone. Resting quietly beside them was a fourth object. Michael was certain, with every part of his being, it had not been there a moment ago. His hands trembled as he reached towards it. Far beyond the stars, the storekeeper suddenly stood. No, he whispered, please. His voice broke. Don't touch it. But Michael couldn't hear him. His fingertips drifted closer, closer. The room beyond the stars fell silent. Not a single page turned. Not a single clock ticked. Even the wind seemed afraid to breathe. Michael's fingertips brushed the mysterious object. The instant he touched it, the forest exploded with light. Not light from the sun, light from somewhere older. The stream rushed backwards. Leaves flew upward instead of falling. Every bird in the forest took flight all at once. Three hundred miles away, Mary fell to her knees. The compass in her hand began to glow. A single tear slipped down her cheek. She didn't know why she was crying. Only that somewhere, someone needed her. Far beyond the stars, the storekeeper closed the ancient book with a force that echoed like thunder. His voice was barely a whisper. It has chosen. The stranger looked at him. The storekeeper slowly shook his head. No. His eyes never left the earth. They have. At that exact moment, the mysterious object burst into Michael's hands. His eyes widened, his breath caught. He stared at what lay before him, unable to speak, unable to move, as the light grew brighter. His whisper barely escaped his lips. Who are you? Join me next Saturday as we explore the name he shouldn't know in chapter five.
