Before we met on Earth, Chapter Six, The Moment That Time Remembered. There are moments in every soul's journey when the universe holds its breath. Not because something has ended, but because something forgotten is about to be remembered. The Story Keeper. The Storekeeper turned the page carefully. Not because the page was fragile, but because some stories must be handled gently. Some moments carry more than memories. They carry the weight of promises made long before the first hello, long before the first touch, long before two souls ever recognized each other. And this, this was one of those moments because Michael had found the fourth object inside the suitcase. And the moment his fingers touched it, everything changed. The river had always been a place of movement. It carried stories from one shore to another. It carried leaves, branches, and memories that had fallen into its current. It never questioned where it was going. It simply followed the path created for it. Until now. Michael stood frozen beside the water, unable to understand what his eyes were seeing. The river was moving backwards. At first, he wondered if he had imagined it. Perhaps exhaustion had finally caught up with him. Perhaps grief had created another impossible moment. But then a single drop of water lifted from the surface and flooded upward. Michael watched it as it returned to the branch above him, joining the leaves that had already begun to rise. The impossible was happening. Nature itself was undoing what had already been done. The river was remembering where it had been. The leaves were remembering where they had come from. And Michael Michael felt something inside of him remembering too. He looked down at that glowing object in his hand. It wasn't bright like a flame. It wasn't harsh like a light. It was softer than that. Almost alive. Almost as if it recognized him. Why me? Michael whispered. The forest did not answer. But somewhere beyond what Michael could see, someone already knew. The storekeeper watched from the place between moments. A place where past and future rested beside each other. A place where every soul's story was carefully protected. The storekeeper had seen countless beginnings. They had witnessed souls choose their paths. They had watched promises made before Earth. But this was different. The fourth object was not supposed to awaken this soon. Not this way. Not before Michael understood what he was searching for. The storekeeper stepped closer to the pages of the story. Their hand hovered over the words that were appearing. And for the first time in a very long time, the storekeeper hesitated. No. The word was barely a whisper, a plea, a warning. Not yet. Because remembering was powerful. But remembering too soon could change everything. Michael felt the wind return, not the gentle breeze that had been there before. The wind carried something else. Something ancient. Something familiar. It moved around him like it knew him. Like it had been waiting. The leaves remained suspended above the ground, caught between two moments. Between what had happened and what was about to happen. Michael closed his eyes. And for just a heartbeat, he felt something. Not a picture. Not a memory. A feeling. A longing. The kind of longing you feel for someone you have never met. The kind of missing that makes no sense. A name almost formed in his mind. Almost. But before he could grasp it, the moment disappeared. The river returned to its normal flow. The leaves gently began to fall again. The world continued as if nothing had happened. Except Michael knew something had. Across the world, Mary sat quietly with a compass resting in her hands. The clockmaker had given it to her long ago. At the time, she didn't understand why. The old man had always spoken in ways that felt like riddles. He had smiled when she asked questions. He had answered questions that she hadn't asked. And he had always seemed to know something that she didn't. Clock does not tell time, he told her once. It only reminds us of time that's passing. Mary had laughed then. She thought it was just another one of his strange sayings. But now, holding the compass, she wondered if she had been trying to prepare if he had been trying to prepare her. Because lately the compass feels different. Like it was waiting. Like it was listening. Mary ran her fingers over the old brass surface. You know something, don't you? She whispered. The compass remained still. But somewhere deep inside, something had shifted. Back beside the river, Michael carefully placed the glowing object back into the suitcase. But it no longer felt like a collection of old belongings. It felt like a message. A message written for him. A message he was only beginning to understand. He looked at the suitcase sitting beside him. For years he had believed he was searching for answers about the past. But perhaps he had been wrong. Perhaps the past was searching for him. And perhaps the greatest mystery wasn't what his grandfather had left behind. Perhaps the greatest mystery was what Michael had left behind before he ever arrived on Earth. The storekeeper closed the book halfway. Not completely. Never completely. Because this story was still unfolding. And somewhere between the ticking of clocks and a whisper of a river, two souls were beginning to remember. Join me in the next chapter of Before We Met on Earth, The Clockmaker's Promise, where Mary discovers that the compass was never meant to lead her somewhere new. It was meant to guide her back to something she had forgotten. I will see you there. Bye bye.
