We learn Italian step by step | Impariamo l'italiano piano piano
Impariamo l’italiano piano piano is a story-based podcast for B1–B2 Italian learners who want to improve their grammar and vocabulary by following an ongoing mystery, rather than studying isolated lessons. Beginners are welcome too - everything unfolds piano piano, one step at a time.
Each episode advances a serialized story, Le Pagine del Passato, allowing you to experience Italian in context as meaning builds gradually through memory, dialogue, and investigation. Grammar structures such as the imperfetto, passato prossimo, congiuntivo, and object pronouns emerge naturally through the narrative, helping you recognize how Italian works in real situations.
Hosted by Myra, an instructional designer and adult language learner, the show is joined by Antonio - a dramatic, opinionated presence who interrupts, comments, and occasionally derails things, making the learning process both human and entertaining. Together, they guide listeners toward greater confidence in Italian, step by step.

Episode 17: Combined Pronouns - The Basics
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Impariamo l’italiano piano piano, we start learning one of the most useful (and most confusing) parts of Italian grammar: combined object pronouns, also called pronomi combinati.
You’ve probably learned direct object pronouns like lo, la, li, le and indirect object pronouns like mi, ti, gli, le. But what happens when Italian needs to say both:
- to whom something is given
- and what is being given?
That’s where combined pronouns come in, and once you understand the logic, they start to feel surprisingly elegant.
In this first part of the lesson, we’ll cover:
- the difference between direct objects and indirect objects
- the basic rule: INDIRECT + DIRECT
- the sound change: mi → me, ti → te, ci → ce, vi → ve
- how gli becomes glielo, gliela, glieli, gliele
- why we get double consonants in commands like dammi and dammela
Plus, Antonio checks in on Paul after last episode’s mysterious window escape… and we share a quick clip from Paul about what the podcast has helped him learn.
In the next episode, we’ll continue with where combined pronouns go in the sentence, practice them in longer structures, and start working more with modal verbs and the passato prossimo.
A presto, and let’s keep going piano piano.
