Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Tony Hills.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a great electrical contractor? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor, jessica Thompson of the Electric Way. Jessica, how's it going?

Speaker 3:

It's good. Thanks for having me, Tony.

Speaker 2:

Awesome, awesome. We're excited to learn about you and your business. Tell us about your company. What is all that you do?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so I am one of the owners, but I actually work alongside my family. My brother-in-law is the master electrician for us and we basically help manage a group of electricians who do mostly residential work. So anything that you would need in your home, from swapping out a light to a plug that isn't working to, you just bought a hot tub or a new electric vehicle and you need to get that hooked up. So we do all of that.

Speaker 2:

Okay, okay, that's awesome, awesome. How did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

So my brother-in-law started the company about 11 years ago. I joined probably about six years ago now at this point and really it is just, you know, a family endeavor. So we're really close outside of work and obviously we work very closely together through the business. But I do all of the you know kind of backend stuff, this type of thing where we are reaching out to the community, getting our name out there and again just kind of helping to manage our team.

Speaker 2:

OK, that's great, Great. What are some of the myths or misconceptions of your industry?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I think one of the biggest things is that it doesn't have to cost a ton of money. And if you're getting somebody out there who is really just pushing you to spend a ton of money, even using scare tactics things like your family's not safe, your house is going to burn down that's such a rare situation in electrical. They're very obvious signs of something is unsafe. You should always just be getting a second opinion. They're very obvious signs of something is unsafe. You should always just be getting a second opinion. So the biggest myth is if someone's pushing you and saying you have to do this now, it's probably a red flag. Get a second opinion and make sure that you're choosing a contractor who you're really comfortable with and you feel like you're getting just honest advice from.

Speaker 2:

Okay, okay, awesome. Who are your target customers and how do you attract them? Okay.

Speaker 3:

Okay, awesome. Who are your target customers and how do you attract them? You know our target customer is really just homeowners, so really anybody in the Colorado Springs monument, even as far down as fountain area, and people who are willing to hire someone who's going to do good work in their home. So about 90% of our customers are repeat customers. We really like to feel like you know, once you hire us, you have an electrician for life. So we're going to work really hard to build a solid and authentic relationship with our customers.

Speaker 2:

Okay. So outside of work, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

I spend a lot of time with my family. Obviously I see them a lot through work, but outside of that you'll find us hanging out for barbecues and lots of birthdays and holidays really just any chance to get together. We like to watch movies and make food, and again, just any chance to spend time together.

Speaker 2:

Okay, that's awesome, so let's switch gears a little bit. Yeah, can you describe a hardship or life challenge that you had to overcome and how it made you stronger, and what comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

I think you know the biggest challenge that's come up for I think a lot of people was the pandemic you know through 2020, having to lock down through the electric way we were actually considered essential workers. To lockdown through the electric way we were actually considered essential workers. So we kept running through that and had to adapt and figure out what the company looked like, how we were managing our families really all of that. Like everybody, I know that that's not a unique situation. We all had to figure out how do I want to show up in my life through this and then learned a lot after that of things that we could take away, lessons that we learned on how we want to then approach life and approach business.

Speaker 2:

OK, ok, all right, great. So, jessica, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about the electric way.

Speaker 3:

The thing to remember is that we provide free estimates and free, honest and friendly advice. So whether you're going to hire us or not, we are always happy to have a conversation with somebody to make sure that things are operating safely and that you're getting the right service that you need. So I would just never hesitate to give us a call and ask a question.
