EP #59: Unbridled Yoga Colorado: Holistic Healing Through Movement, Breath, and Energy

Tony Hills & Carol O'Brien Episode 59

What makes Carol O' Brien with Unbridled Yoga Colorado a good neighbor?

Have you ever wondered if there's more to healing than conventional methods? Carol O'Brien from Unbridled Yoga Colorado joins us to reveal how holistic practices can transform your relationship with your body and mind.

Carol's journey begins unexpectedly. With a background in speech pathology and a family of educators, she assumed teaching meant classrooms and blackboards. After facing personal health challenges, she discovered that teaching could happen in a yoga studio, on a massage table, or in an immersion room—anywhere people gather to learn about their bodies. This revelation led her to create Unbridled Yoga Colorado, where she combines yoga, Reiki, sound healing, and breathwork to address physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

With clarity and passion, Carol dispels common misconceptions about her field. "Yoga isn't a religion," she explains, but rather a philosophy compatible with any faith tradition. Similarly, she bridges the perceived gap between "woo" and science, highlighting the substantial neuroscientific research supporting energy healing practices. Her approach serves diverse clients—from teenagers uncomfortable in their changing bodies to grandparents wanting to play with grandchildren without pain, to parents rediscovering themselves as children grow up. The common thread? Everyone deserves to "live life unbridled," experiencing the freedom that comes with truly inhabiting one's body.

Carol's message resonates with refreshing accessibility: you don't need flexibility or strength to begin this journey—these qualities develop naturally through practice. Whether you're curious about yoga, considering energy healing, or simply want to feel more at home in your body, visit unbridledyogacolorado.com to discover how Carol's holistic approach might transform your relationship with yourself.

Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Tony Hills.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an intuitive healer? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor, carol O'Brien, with Unbridled Yoga. Colorado, carol, how's it going?

Speaker 3:

It's going great Loving Colorado this time of year.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. Hey, we're excited to learn about what it is that you do, so tell us about your company.

Speaker 3:

Unbridled Yoga Colorado embraces all aspects of healing the body as a whole, so I look at the movement aspect through yoga poses, but I also embrace all the parts of yoga, which is also your breath, mental and emotional well-being, and I address that through other modalities like Reiki, which is an energy healing, vibrational sound bowls and breath work.

Speaker 2:

Okay, okay, awesome. How did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Okay, okay, awesome. How did you get into this business? Well, it started a long time ago. I have a bachelor's in speech pathology and audiology and I was going to be a teacher in the special education community. I really grew up in that field and family I have a principal, my grandfather was a principal of an elementary school and I have family that are teachers. So I always thought that teaching would look like it was in a room with a blackboard, and then started having health challenges of my own and exploring these other aspects of what it looks like to heal your body and realized that I can teach from a yoga studio or from a massage table or an immersion room and help somebody empower their own health through those teachings. It doesn't have to look like a classroom with chairs and tables and a blackboard.

Speaker 2:

So what are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

Oh, wow, probably when it comes to yoga, that people tend to think it's a religion and it's not a religion. Yoga has a philosophy, but you can have any faith or belief within it and still practice yoga and reap the benefits of it, because I don't know about you, but you have to breathe, right. You get up in the morning and you're still breathing and your heart is beating, and that's kind of what yoga helps us. Do is be more conscious of each breath and fill it to its fullest. Do is be more conscious of each breath and fill it to its fullest. When it comes to the Reiki or the sound healing, there can be a lot of different myths, but the basic one is that it's there to help you and it's based in science. It's not just woo, I didn't make it up. There's a lot of neuroscience and biology science behind why it works within our body. So trust the science if you won't trust the woo factor.

Speaker 2:

Okay, awesome. Who are your target customers and how do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

I really love working with people that are looking to feel better in their body. It might not be an actual injury or somebody who is concerned about a specific thing, but they just they want to feel more themselves, live life unbridled. I live life with this freedom to be able to embrace every moment that they live. Sometimes it's adults who maybe they have grandkids and they are realizing they can't get down on the ground to play with those grandkids quite as easily as they used to. Sometimes it's teenagers that really aren't feeling at home in their body. High school and or middle school, I mean, they weren't comfortable for me, so I really help them find this confidence and this empowerment to feel comfortable within their body. And sometimes it's a mom or a new parent who is looking to find themselves again as their kids grow up and what that new normal looks like for them.

Speaker 2:

Outside of work. What do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

I love to camp and hike kayaking. I have a horse and love to ride the trails and explore. I can't wait, like May is, I think, my favorite month here because the wildflowers are so gorgeous and just spend time with the family doing all the outside things. Okay.

Speaker 2:

Let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame? How it made you stronger? What comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

comes to mind. So we I'm from Nevada, a little bit of a transplant, and when I lived in Nevada I owned a yoga studio. I wasn't a yoga teacher yet and I had bought the business to sustain the community. And when we moved here I had to make that hard choice of do I continue to manage this business from 16 hours away and sustain the community and I did for a couple of years all through COVID. But making that choice to dissolve the community was so hard People's expectations of a continuity that they're looking for and when a community comes together like that, the stability behind all of it when it feels like it's being lost.

Speaker 3:

It really allowed me space to see that it doesn't have to look a certain way in order to continue with that community. So then, moving here, becoming a yoga teacher here and seeing how that space came together and how I could include my community from Nevada in my new community here and how the space just looks. It looks however you want it to be, so you don't have to put it in a box. It kind of like working in a classroom. Your classroom can look like whatever it wants Working in a classroom.

Speaker 2:

Your classroom can look like whatever it wants. Okay.

Speaker 3:

Carol, please tell all this is one thing nature remember about Unbridled Yoga Colorado. One thing to remember about Unbridled Yoga Colorado is you don't have to be flexible, you don't have to be strong.
