EP #78: Performance Psychology: How to Reach Your Peak Potential with Priya Ford

Tony Hills & Priya Ford Episode 78

What makes Priya Ford with Elite Edge, LLC a good neighbor?

What does it take to perform at your absolute best, day after day? Dive into the fascinating world of performance psychology with Priya Ford, founder of Elite Edge, LLC as she unravels the mental ingredients that separate good from great.

Priya breaks down common misconceptions about her field, explaining that performance psychology isn't just about fixing problems—it's about enhancing what's already working. Drawing from her background as a college volleyball captain, she shares how her own search for mental edge led her to create a business helping others overcome similar challenges. The conversation reveals how self-awareness around our thoughts, mindset, and belief systems can dramatically transform performance outcomes in any area of life.

One particularly powerful moment comes when Priya vulnerably shares a pivotal leadership challenge that shaped her career path. After making a team decision that split her volleyball teammates, she learned that even with the best intentions, leaders can't please everyone—a lesson that now fuels her passion for leadership development. Her story illustrates how personal struggles often contain the seeds of professional purpose.

Whether you're an athlete looking to break through performance plateaus, a professional seeking to excel under pressure, or a leader navigating complex decisions, this episode offers practical wisdom about optimizing your mental approach. Ready to discover what might be holding you back from reaching your peak potential? Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Tony Hills.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a performance psychology consultant? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor Priya Ford with Elite Edge LLC. Priya, how's it going?

Speaker 3:

Hey, good morning Tony.

Speaker 2:

It's going so well. Hope you're doing well today. I'm doing fantastic.

Speaker 3:

We are excited to learn about what you do. So tell us about your business. Absolutely so. At Elite Edge, what we do is we help people reach their peak potential, and how we do that is we do one-on-one sessions with people. We also bring together groups and teams, and basically what we do is we do one-on-one sessions with people. We also bring together groups and teams, and basically what we do is we help people build self-awareness around their thoughts, their mindset, their belief systems and figure out what's working for them. And, if that's the case, keep things rolling and we try to figure out what's working against them mentally and, if that's the case, maybe make some changes here and there.

Speaker 2:

Okay, awesome. How did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that's a great question. So back in the day when I was growing up, I played volleyball and there were some coaches that really helped me reach my peak potential within volleyball and some coaches that actually weren't so helpful for me, and at the time I really needed someone who was in this space to help me realize the way that I was thinking wasn't helping me be my best. And so luckily, I networked through undergrad and my graduate degree and found out that performance psychology was a field and I just see it as the missing element that I needed when I was younger. So here I am today trying to provide that for others.

Speaker 2:

Okay, what are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

Oh, that's a good question, okay. So one common myth I think people tend to believe to be true is that if you're working with a counselor, a therapist or clinical psychologist, that means that you're working or you're getting the. That means that you're working or you're getting the same information that you would from a performance psychology consultant. But that's not the case. And here's why it's not the case because we each have our own individualized specialties that help us be successful in the space that we're in.

Speaker 3:

So just because you're working with one person in the psychology industry doesn't mean you're getting the same services that another person might be able to provide. So that's one myth is that if you're working with one doesn't mean that you're working with all. And the second myth is that if you have a bad experience or a not so great experience with one performance psychology consultant or sports psychology consultant, that doesn't mean that you won't click with somebody else. Kind of like you got to find the right physical therapist, you got to find the right nutritionist, dietician that's going to help you make the changes that you need to be at your best. Same thing with sport and performance psychology and leadership development you just got to find the right person for you. So if you've worked with someone before and it didn't go so well doesn't mean that it won't go well in the future with somebody different.

Speaker 2:

Okay, who are your target customers and how do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

Oh okay, target customers, my target customers. Target clients would be people who are wanting to get better at whatever it is that they do, and I know that that is a super broad statement, but let me make that a little bit more clear. If you are the type of person who has some sort of performance, whether that's in the sporting industry or whether that's in your day-to-day job, whether you're a leader, if there's just something that you're trying to be really good at, that you are my target person. So if you're ready to make some changes and figure out how you can be mentally on top of your game, maybe make some small tweaks here and there to be optimizing your performance on a consistent basis, that's the type of person I want to be working with.

Speaker 2:

Okay, outside of work, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Oh, lots of things. So I already brought up that I played volleyball growing up. Luckily, being here in the Springs, we have so many opportunities to play volleyball, so I continue to play volleyball every single week. And what I also do is I love to travel. So whether that's within the US or outside of outside of the US, I just love having new experiences, trying new foods, learning about different cultures. And you know, worst case, if I'm lost in a book, hey, I'm happy with that as well. So anything I can do to just have some fun and enjoy life, that's what I try to do outside of my work hours.

Speaker 2:

Okay, let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame? How it made you stronger? What comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, absolutely, and actually the challenge that comes to mind is one of the reasons why I got into the space that I'm in today. I remember when I was playing volleyball in college, I was lucky enough to be a team captain and that was my first formal leadership role. So with that formal leadership role came more responsibilities and decision-making opportunities, and I remember I don't remember exactly what the decision was that I made, but I remember there was some decision that I made and the team was divided. Half the team liked the decision and the other half of the team did not like the decision that I made.

Speaker 3:

And that was a really tough moment for me because that was the first experience that I had where I realized, no matter how hard I work and no matter how good my intentions are, I could still make decisions or do things that might upset people, where people aren't happy with me, and that was a tough pill for me to swallow at the time. But honestly, like I said, it's one of the reasons why I got into where I am today, especially focusing on working with leaders, and I really just want to help people understand that challenges, adversity and stress that's all a natural part of life, especially being an adult. We have so many things going on all the time, but we can do things to help work through those challenges, get through that adversity or minimize some of that stress and worst case. We're learning through all of these challenges and experiences that we have.

Speaker 2:

Okay, okay, priya, please tell us just one thing you need to remember about Elite Edge LLC.
