EP #95: Everyone over 18 needs an estate plan, not just the wealthy.

Tony Hills & Masayo Quick Episode 95

What makes Masayo Quick with Quick Law LLC a good neighbor?

Attorney Masayo Quick shatters common estate planning myths and reveals why legal preparation matters for everyone - not just the wealthy or elderly. Drawing from compelling real-world examples, she explains how proper documentation prevents unnecessary complications for your loved ones during already difficult times. Would you know what to do if a family member became incapacitated without having the proper legal documents in place?

Quick Law LLC offers comprehensive services beyond basic estate planning, including probate assistance, trust administration, and specialized elder law guidance for navigating long-term care options. The firm helps seniors understand and qualify for benefits sooner, ensuring they receive necessary care without financial devastation. Masayo's passion for her work traces back to an inspiring business law professor whose purpose-driven approach to the legal profession made a lasting impression.

Parents of young adults might be shocked to learn they lose automatic access to their children's medical information when they turn 18. Without proper documentation, parents can't help make medical decisions in emergencies - regardless of who pays the bills. While most clients seek estate planning services later in life, Masayo emphasizes that everyone over 18 should have basic legal protections in place. Ready to ensure your wishes are properly documented and your loved ones are protected? Contact Quick Law LLC at 720-515-2259 or find them on Facebook to receive the same high-quality legal service they provide to all clients, regardless of financial status.

Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Tony Hills.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of estate planning, probate or elder law? Help might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor Masayo Quick with Quick Law LLC.

Speaker 3:

Masayo, how's it going Good. How are you?

Speaker 2:

Awesome. We're excited to learn about your business. Tell us about what you do.

Speaker 3:

Well with estate planning. A lot of people sometimes don't understand what that involves. It involves wills, powers of attorney, living wills, declaration of last wishes, powers of attorney, living wills, declaration of last wishes, things of that nature. So there really are things everybody should have. We also do probate when a loved one passes, and trust administration. If they did have a trust in place, we can help wrap that up as well, and we do elder law. So usually that deals with people who are seniors who are looking at entry to long-term care, whether it's home care, assisted living or skilled nursing care. We can help with the legalities to make sure they get qualified sooner for those benefits.

Speaker 2:

Okay, awesome. How did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Well, when I was in college I majored in business because I figured no matter what you do, it always comes down to business and business law was a required course and it was taught by a deputy district attorney and he was really inspiring. So whenever I talk to people who know him and I say I think his body makes more serotonin than the rest of us, they all agree wholeheartedly. So he's just such a positive, upbeat guy and you could really see that he saw a lot of purpose in what he did.

Speaker 2:

So that really inspired me to go into law lot of purpose in what he did, so that really inspired me to go into law. Okay, what are?

Speaker 3:

some myths or misconceptions in your industry. Well, I think a big misconception is that estate planning is only for people who are wealthy, because really anyone, we've seen that it would have been really helpful even for people who are. A very meager means to have a will. For example, we had this one situation where a professional needed to do a. It still would have been very helpful if she had a will because she had an estranged brother. So without a will you're surviving parents. So fortunately she had a surviving father, over 100 years old.

Speaker 3:

We were able to get him to sign off to have a professional take care of things. But you know, we really had to hot foot it over there to make sure we could get his signature. But if he had passed, it would be an equal priority among all her siblings to take care of her estate, including that estranged brother. And trying to get his signature when nobody knows where he is definitely would have been a huge problem. When nobody knows where he is is definitely would have been a huge problem. So really it doesn't matter how much or how little. It's something everybody really should have. It makes it so much easier.

Speaker 2:

Okay, who are your target customers and how do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

Well, really, we can do estate planning for anyone who is over 18.

Speaker 3:

Although we don't see a whole lot of people signing on their 18th birthday, we did have one who made sure she signed right when she turned 18.

Speaker 3:

It can be more important than people realize, because a lot of people have college age kids and they just kind of assume that if something happened, they'd still be able to get their child's medical information make decisions for them. Well, that's not the case, because once they turn 18, legally they're an adult. So even though we don't see a whole lot of people in their late teens, early 20s although we do see a few most of our clients are seniors. That's usually when people start to feel the need a bit more, although we encourage anybody over 18 to plan, and so with our kind of line of work, a high level of trust is needed, and so we find that a general advertisement doesn't really motivate people to pick up the phone and call us. So most of our referrals are they were heard about us from a friend, a family member or a professional they work with, like a realtor, a financial planner, an insurance agent, something like that.

Speaker 2:

Okay, outside of work, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

I do like to swim and I do like to play card games. I'm really amazed at how many different games you can have just with a simple deck of cards.

Speaker 2:

Okay, great, let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame, how it made you stronger and what comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

Well, I would say, for something relatively more recent, is with my second stalker. He would show up at the office things like that just very unexpectedly. It was such a stressful situation, and so I really had to get into mindfulness techniques and it was so helpful. You know, I really feel, based on that, that everyone should get into that too, because we live in a stressful world and everybody really needs to be able to control their thoughts and to think as positively as possible.

Speaker 2:

Okay, messiah, please tell us one thing nature, remember about Quick Law LLC.
