EP #103: Bringing Integrity Back to HVAC: The Pendleton Family Story

Tony Hills & Brandy Pendleton Episode 103

What makes Brandy Pendleton with Pendleton Heating & Cooling a good neighbor?

Meet Brandy Pendleton, who took a leap of faith from teaching to transforming the HVAC industry in Colorado Springs. Together with her husband, who brings nearly two decades of hands-on experience, they launched Pendleton Heating & Cooling in 2019 with a refreshingly simple mission: "bringing integrity back to HVAC."

What sets this family-run business apart is their dedication to honesty and education. While many companies might push for expensive replacements, the Pendletons focus on helping you maximize your current system's lifespan through proper maintenance. Serving communities from Monument to Fountain, they handle everything from routine maintenance to complete system installations for furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, and indoor air quality systems.

During our conversation, Brandy debunks common HVAC myths that could be costing you money. Did you know furnace filters need changing every three months? Or that those high MERV-rated filters marketed for allergy sufferers might actually damage your system in Colorado's high-altitude environment? These practical insights reflect the Pendletons' commitment to treating every customer's home like their own. Despite launching their business just before the pandemic hit, their resilience and flexibility have helped them thrive even through challenging times.

Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Tony Hills.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a great residential HVAC specialist? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing our good neighbor, Brandi Pendleton. With Pendleton Heating and Cooling, Brandi, how's it going?

Speaker 3:

Hi, there, I'm doing great. How are you?

Speaker 2:

I am awesome. We're excited to learn about your business, so tell us about your company.

Speaker 3:

I'm super excited to share. So thank you for having me. Our name is Pendleton Heating and Cooling and we are a local residential HVAC company here in the Colorado Springs and we serve the whole surrounding area. So we do go out to Monument and Payton and Elkhart and Woodland Park in Manitou Springs and Fountain is the furthest we go south. So we serve the whole area and we have service maintenance, repair installations of all things heating and cooling. So we do service boilers and furnaces as well as many split systems, air conditioners, heat pumps, all of the things. We also have indoor air quality systems that we can offer and we do gas lines and venting and all the HVAC stuff.

Speaker 2:

Okay, awesome, how did?

Speaker 3:

you get into this business. Well, my husband has a long background in HVAC. He started with doing duct work and venting, like building the duct work, and he moved into gas lines and then into HVAC. So he's been in the industry for probably close to 20 years or so. And I was an educator, I was in the education field, I was a teacher, and he was working for the company and the company decided that the owners didn't want to run the company anymore and we had the opportunity they offered for us to be able to take over. So we decided to do that and we jumped in headfirst and I left the teaching career to help build the business. And here we are. That was in 2019. So we've done pretty good.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. What are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

You know, I think the biggest one is that you don't need to change your furnace filter very often. We have a lot of people that don't realize that it needs to be changed at least every three months. If you have a home that has a lot of pets or dust or a lot of traffic in and out, you might even need to change it more often than that. And then really the second biggest one is still filters, but it's about the MERV rating of the filter. There's a lot of companies that say those very high MERV rated filters will help with allergies and such, but truly they're very restrictive and since we live in a place of high altitude and thin air, it really overworks your system and it does a lot of harm to your system. So we recommend lower MERV filters, changing them more often.

Speaker 2:

Okay, who are your target customers and how do you attract them?

Speaker 3:

Well, you know, we love to serve our community. Anybody that owns a home or some property that they are interested in maintaining their systems to make sure that they last for a really long time, people who are looking to install new systems or improve the systems that they have um, we do a lot of repairs and and service as well, so we love to educate, so people who want to learn about their systems. I am happy to do that too. You know. Know, with my education background, it's one of my favorite things to do so and we really enjoy being a part of the community. So people who have opportunities for us to help within the community participate in community events. We'd love to connect with them also.

Speaker 2:

OK, outside of work, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

We really love Colorado. We really love to be outdoors. I know that's probably an answer for a lot of people, but that's why we live here, right, we love to camp and fish and I love to go hiking. Kip's not so much of a hiker, unless there's going to be some fishing at the end of it or a reward for him, but we do enjoy being outside and we really love to spend time with our family and our friends, of course, and for me personally, I love to quilt. I think that's a very soothing, relaxing, quiet time for me and I enjoy that a lot.

Speaker 2:

Okay, let's switch gears. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame, how it made you stronger and what comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

I think, if we're talking about the business specifically and thinking about that, we started in January 2019. So we were only open for a year-ish and then COVID came and you know that was a really trying time for everybody and being a new business owner having decided to jump in head first and leave teaching and this was our thing it was a little bit scary for us navigating, being new business owners and making sure we were staying safe and healthy and within the rules that we had and all the things it was. It was a lot, but we made it through and here we are still standing. We learned a lot about how to follow the rules and how to work with our customers and be flexible, that's for sure work with our customers and be flexible, that's for sure.

Speaker 2:

Okay, that's awesome, brandy.

Speaker 3:

Please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Pendleton Heating and Cooling. I think if I wanted people to remember something about us, it's that we are not just like every other HVAC company. We are family run, we're a small business and we really strive to treat every home like it's our own. Our mission statement is to bring integrity back to HVAC, and that is truly something that we strive to do by delivering quality service and being honest and reasonable in pricing. And that education piece trying to help people make sure they make their systems last a really long time, instead of having to sell them a new one. Not that we won't sell you a new one, but we'd like to help you maintain the one you have and last as long as you can.

Speaker 2:
