Margot Zaher:Hi, I'm really excited to be here today. Today is the very first episode of the Enneagram Edge, and I'm Margot Zaher. I'm an Enneagram coach and a business coach, and I'm really excited to kick off this journey with you.
Margot Zaher:This has been a dream of mine for a long time to have my own podcast, and specifically around something on a topic that I'm so inspired by. The Enneagram has truly changed my life, and I have seen so many differences in the lives of my clients as well, so many entrepreneurs I've worked with. Thus, I'm excited to dive into this topic called the Enneagram. Perhaps you know a lot about the Enneagram. Perhaps you're like Enneagram what? What the heck's that? Or perhaps you're Enneagram curious. Wherever you're at, this is the perfect place to be. We're going to have fun diving into it, exploring why knowing your Enneagram even matters. You know why? It's a game changer for growth as an entrepreneur and a game changer for productivity, for gaining new clients, for being the best entrepreneur you can be and also for having a life you absolutely love. I'm really excited to dive into this topic with you, and so first let's look at what the Enneagram is. And you might be really curious again like "what is this thing?
Margot Zaher:Perhaps you've heard of Myers-Briggs. I think of it sometimes like the Myers-Briggs on steroids. You know.. that did a lot of yoga, read a few self-help books and then decided to go a bit deeper. So the Enneagram is a more vast way of looking at personality and specifically it's actually looking at a framework of nine different types. These nine types of people all have different motivations, different drives, different challenges. The difference between the Enneagram and perhaps some other of these tools for determining your personality styles, like Myers-Briggs, is that it's not just a personality test. It's really about figuring out what drives you, what drives core behaviors, what makes you behave certain ways. And what's really cool about it is that it helps you learn how to figure out what drives you and why you don't do the things you want to do.
Margot Zaher:You know, have you ever had that day where you're like, oh my gosh, I had a whole list of things to do and instead of doing that, I got distracted? And why am I doing that? Why am I not staying on task? Why am I not staying focused? Why am I procrastinating? Why am I overwhelmed? Why am I reacting this way? All of those things get a lot clearer when you know the Enneagram, because the Enneagram really helps shed light on what's happening behind the scenes, what's really going on in there.
Margot Zaher:Basically, at its core, the Enneagram reveals to us these hidden dimensions of ourselves. I'm going to call them the no-go zones, the places that we don't want to go. Every type is desperately trying to avoid something. There are these fears that cause us to avoid things that make us uncomfortable, and so we pretend that they don't exist and because of that, we get really disempowered in that area. And every type is trying to go in a certain direction, in the direction where they feel most comfortable, towards their strengths. So every type has superpowers, which we're going to go into, and every type has no-go zones or blind spots. Again, the more you know about yourself as an entrepreneur, the more you know about what actually drives your behavior, what makes you say certain things or do certain things, the more you're going to be able to be empowered and make those business decisions you want to take and figure out the right strategies for you to use in your day-to-day business life. And so it's really exciting this whole path of discovery.
Margot Zaher:With regards to the Enneagram, if you're saying to yourself "I don't really know what my type is, I'm not sure where I fall on the scale. Don't worry, I'm about to go through all nine types here. Give a little bit of an explanation for those types so you can get a sense of where you might fall today. And if you already know your type, you can use this as an opportunity to dive a little deeper and see more what resonates with you. With regards to your specific type, let's start with type one.
Margot Zaher:You know type one is normally referred to as a perfectionist. It's the one that likes to check all those little boxes off, make sure that it is doing the right thing. So, it has a very strong focus on improvement, Mr and Mrs Fix-It. Let's make sure that we get all those problems fixed so that we can really be functioning at these ideal levels! And so they're the ones that see the mistakes that are being made. Maybe even when they're reading something like oh my gosh, there is a typo. Those are the type one entrepreneurs out there, and so, again, their superpower is that they're really good at quality control. They're really good at figuring out improvement projects and programs. And their challenge, though, is that they get stuck in this whole perfectionism trap, right? And they strive so hard to make things perfect, but you know what? It's impossible, right? This is like trying to find the unicorn of business success. It's impossible to be perfect. You're going to make mistakes, and that's part of life. However, if you hold yourself back from moving forward because you're afraid of making mistakes, then you're falling into this type one entrepreneur Enneagram trap. So that's a little bit about type one.
Margot Zaher:Let's move on to type two. So type two's are really motivated by connection and service and relationship. They're the ones who love to create a good relationship with their clients, prospects, with their friends. They want to be seen as the ideal coworker, colleague, boss. They basically want everybody to see them in a good light. What's positive about this is they're really great at adding those extra touches that will create good relationships. Right? Sending those thank you notes. I know a lot of us have trouble with that. Maybe doing a surprise care package for somebody, maybe volunteering for things, even if they don't have a lot of time. So they're the ones that are gonna show up and be of service and help others, because they're called the helper on the Enneagram.
Margot Zaher:However, the big challenge with type two entrepreneurs and type twos in general is that they give and give and give and give. And you know what? Unfortunately, they use up all their energy and resources sometimes on others and their well end up being completely dry. And they're thirsty, exhausted and burned out, and so they suffer from burnout, kind of running on fumes in their life. And sometimes they don't get the things they really want done, done for themselves, right? That's the challenge with type two.
Margot Zaher:So now, moving on to type three, the achiever. Now, if you want to get something done, give it to an achiever. Those types love to get things done. They're highly productive, success and recognition focused. So if you're an achiever out there, you are the poster child for the business world of hustle and bustle. You know how to grind and get those things done. You're probably extremely good at creating a vision, at doing goal setting and at checking off things on your to-do list, and you probably have productivity habits 100% mastered because you love to be productive and explore new ways of being productive. That's awesome. And the challenge, though, is that you can go a little bit overboard and run into workaholism and just chasing the next thing, getting the next thing done, getting the next positive recognition from somebody, without really asking yourself "s this actually the direction I want to be focused in? Do I actually want to be doing this? Is this going to lead to my ultimate vision? Achievers can get into the habit of just producing, to produce, and then working themselves to death and waking up completely exhausted in the long run. So that's the challenge for type three entrepreneurs, putting way too many things on their plates.
Margot Zaher:Let's move on to type four, the individualist. Now, they are the ones who want to be seen as unique and special. They strive for that authenticity, that creativity. They want to live outside the box - no putting them in any boxes. They don't want to be mainstream. They're the artists, they're the ones who have style. They're the dreamers that you know, the ones who have style. So they're super great at creating unique products, services, and being very authentic and real. They're highly connected to their emotions, and so they're able to really connect with others on a deep level. The big challenge, though, for a type four is that they can get caught up with and get stuck on other people recognizing them for their unique talents and abilities. If they're not recognized, this can throw them into a bad space of like, well, nobody really sees me, nobody gets me, and that can really limit productivity effectiveness. And they can get kind of into a whirlwind of some negative beliefs about themselves that may stop them from taking action. Instead they may feel sorry for themselves because people are not recognizing how talented and amazing they truly are.
Margot Zaher:So moving on to type five. T ype five is called the investigator. They seek knowledge above all. Basically, the more they know, the better. They strive for competency. And so type fives are the ones that really go the extra mile when it comes to finding answers. They read tons of books about the topic. They watch 10 videos about it. They write an entire essay to answer your question. They love to understand everything in the most minute detail. They wanna be seen as the expert. They are going to focus on an area that they love. Perhaps even go into some sort of ivory tower place where they almost become a hermit. They just keep learning about that one thing they love until one day they feel comfortable coming out and sharing their expertise with others. A challenge is that they can go overboard with research and get stuck in this analysis paralysis thing where they keep researching and not getting into action. They can also become isolated in their research and not interact with others. This causes them to miss out on what fully might be going on in that domain due to not being more collaborative with others in their industry. So let's move on to type six.
Margot Zaher:Type six is a loyalist. They value security and preparation. One way to look at type six is kind of like a human version of a Swiss Army knife. They've got all those possible scenarios and backup plans in place. They're thinking about what could go wrong. They're very reliable. They're cautious and they're well prepared for the worst case scenario. They're called the devil's advocate also, so they're going to be asking you questions like well, what about this? Have you thought about that? And so they go back and forth exploring what really is happening, just to make sure that nothing can go wrong. But here's the cash. They can get stuck in indecision. They can get stuck in self-doubt because they're looking at all the possible worst scenarios instead of focused on what possibly could happen. Instead of focusing on what really feels good to their heart, their truth, they are focused on the outward possible issues that could occur. So decision making for a type six can be very challenging because there's a lot of self-doubt there. So that's where the opportunity for growth lies for type six.
Margot Zaher:Type seven the enthusiast. Everything is always great in the world of the enthusiast. It's like the sun is always shining. Life is good. The type sevens are kind of like the, you know, life of the business party. They've got a ton of ideas brewing. They've got perhaps 15 different business ideas brewing at once, three different courses in development and perhaps a shiny new startup project that's just around the corner. Because they love variety and adventure, there's always something new and exciting to do. They're the ones that have a natural enthusiasm for life. They're going to be super engaging with you, fun to hang out with. And you're going to really enjoy being with a type seven.
Margot Zaher:So what's the problem here? Well, the problem is that they tend to start a lot of new things and have challenge finishing these things. There's a ton of discarded notebooks, discarded ideas that fall by the wayside. Perhaps they buy 100 domains and only develop two of them and things just gather dust. A problem for them is that they keep changing directions so often that they don't get things accomplished. They're not able to really go in one direction long enough to see the fruits of their labor.
Margot Zaher:So moving on to type eight, the challenger. So they strive for control, they strive for justice. They're really the powerhouses of the Enneagram. You know when you're around a type eight. They walk through the door and they make those decisions and they kind of take their world on. You know that nothing's going to stop them. They are natural leaders. Most type eights just naturally become leaders. They don't let anything stop them from their vision, and so they may even bulldoze a little bit in situations. So that's really their drawback. Continuing to bulldoze and not necessarily listening to what other people have to say or collaborating with others. The point is that while they're natural leaders, it would be more effective for them to actually be collaborative leaders at certain times and listen to their team instead of just charging off in their own direction. So that is the challenge for the eights.
Margot Zaher:Type nine the peacemaker. They're all about harmony and peace. As their title suggests, they're kind of like the Zen masters of the Enneagram. They strive for connection, for unity, for calmness. They want to make sure that things are running in a very smooth way. So they are the ones who strive for everybody to feel valued and heard. The big downside is they're afraid of conflict. They're afraid you might get angry at them so because of that, what happens? Well, what happens mostly is they don't speak up. They don't tell their truth. They may hide a little bit. They may become really small. They may freeze up, kind of almost disappear, and so because of that, they don't get heard. Because of that, their great ideas may never get heard and they may never get into action towards making something happen. Because if they took action and stood up for what they believed in and wanted to see happen, they would rock the boat. And if they rocked the boat, people would get angry at them and so their biggest fear would be realized.
Margot Zaher:So that's a little bit of a tour around the Enneagram clock. And as you heard those, did any of them sound familiar? Any of them sound like you? ?? If you're still not clear on who you are on the Enneagram, that's completely normal. It takes a while to understand who you are. It's kind of a exploration process. In the show notes there's a link to take a 10 question quick assessment test to determine what type you might be. This is a high level test so it'll give you a little bit of a sense. I also some Enneagram typing sessions which are more in depth if you have some more questions about that.
Margot Zaher:me personally, it was quite the experience figuring out my type and in fact I mistyped myself for many years. I thought I was a type three, but actually I'm a type six, which makes a lot of sense if you know much about the Enneagram, because type sixes disintegrate or go to type three under stress . Something we'll be talking about in future episodes what happens under stress for each type. And so basically, when I was being typed to begin with, guess what? I was pretty stressed out. That's why I turned up as a type three. So why does your type matter for business success? Why do you care at all about knowing your Enneagram.? I've been working with entrepreneurs since 2000 as a business coach, and I was introduced to the Enneagram in 2003. And through all of these years years, over 20 years years, I've discovered that knowing your type as an entrepreneur is super key to your success. It really makes or breaks you, and there's so many amazing things that you are able to do and put into action. When you know your type. It really kind the playing field.
Margot Zaher:Today we're going to talk about three main reasons why knowing your Enneagram type is helpful, and there are many more than that. I just wanted to get started on this. One of them is basically leveraging your strengths, knowing your superpowers like what are you actually good at? Now, of course, you probably have some good idea of what you're good at. I hope so. However, a lot of times we aren't that clear on our true superpowers. We take them for granted. We're not fully leveraging them, and so we let some of them just sit dormant and because of that, we're not fully accessing our true potential. We're just kind of like, yeah, whatever, I'm going to do this and do that, but we're not leveraging what would really matter and make us highly successful. And what's worse is if you try to embrace somebody else's superpower and it's not who you naturally are, you have trouble with their strategies, with their ideas, and then you fail because of that. And you beat yourself up and you get into this terrible place because you're trying to be somebody else, somebody else in the Enneagram and not yourself. What's important is to realize the more that you leverage your talents, your natural strengths, your superpowers, the easier it is for you to be successful in life, and with much less effort. So it's all about being naturally who you are in the end.
Margot Zaher:Let's talk about a couple examples out there in the Enneagram world. So let's talk about type three, for instance. Some of their natural superpowers are they're really great at setting goals. They're really great at creating lists of things to do and accomplishing things. So if something needs to get done, they are powerhouses of productivity. So it's important for them to focus on "I'm really good at goal setting and driving the vision and making things happen in a company, so it's important for me to be in that kind of position." Well, what about like a type nine? One of their great superpowers is that they're really good at helping people understand each other and creating a collaborative environment each other and creating a collaborative environment. So it's important to be able to access that superpower. How to create, maybe, better relationships? Focus on the collaboration side of things in building a business.
Margot Zaher:What about type seven? One of their superpowers is their enthusiasm, is their natural exuberance for life and their ability to generate ideas. Bring in that idea generator. Figure out how to really leverage that superpower and that exuberance. How can you put more exuberance into your life and into your business if you're a type seven instead of trying to shut it down? These are some things to think about with regards to your superpowers, making sure that you leverage them instead of shutting them down. So think about yourself and perhaps the type that you feel you may be more aligned with, or just in general as an entrepreneur, what are some of your superpowers? And make a list of those superpowers and really start thinking about what am I really really good at and am I fully leveraging those or utilizing those in my business today?
Margot Zaher:So another reason that the Enneagram is so impactful is that it shows you what your blind spots are, what you can't see about yourself, and specifically what I call the dreaded no-go zone. What I was saying earlier is every type has a place they don't want to go that they're avoiding at all costs because it makes them uncomfortable, right? For instance, let's go back to type seven. Type seven is really good and comfortable taking action and doing fun things, getting into new environments with variety and adventure. Where their no-go zone tends to be actually are those boring, mundane tasks, the ones that they are like I hate this and because of that they put things off. They don't get things done and because of that they don't experience the kind of success they know they deserve. So another example of this is perhaps when you look at type one. They are focused on yes, I wanna do the right thing. I'm gonna constantly make sure I follow the right processes and the right rules, and so that nobody can tell me that I've made a mistake. So what they're really trying to avoid at all costs is making a mistake. That's the no-go zone of somebody telling them like oh, you shouldn't have done that, that was the wrong thing to do, and that will really irk and irritate actually type one to be told that because they're trying to avoid the whole area of making a mistake. Now maybe we should look at another one, which is type two.
Margot Zaher:Type twos want to be seen as this beautiful, ideal person that's generous and kind and supportive, and so their no-go zone is actually appearing selfish, is appearing needy, appearing like they're demanding something of other people. And so, because of that, they have trouble stating their needs, they have trouble setting boundaries. This can really backfire in business situations and in life. So think about yourself and your business and your life. Like what are some of your blind spots or no-go zones? What are those places where you're like, oh, I don't ever want to go over there, or, if I do, that makes me really uncomfortable? That's a really good thing to start investigating because it will unlock new opportunities for growth for you.
Margot Zaher:Okay, another place is building better relationships. This is an opportunity for growth for many of us, you know. I think relationships are the foundation for success in a business ? . The better relationships you have, the more clients you're going to have. , The the better relationships you have, the more people are going to recommend you to other people, and so forth. Relationships are the key to your success. Think about it for a second in your .. Perhaps there are certain people that you automatically are like oh my gosh, I get along with them so easily. You have your favorite clients, your favorite networking . , And and there's some other people that you're like . it's It's kind of harder. I feel like our conversations are kind of a little bit uncomfortable. They're a little bit rigid or strange or uneasy. I'm uneasy when I'm with them. Okay, so this is showing us very Very . that Different different types on the Enneagram get along differently. Some naturally sync up and it's easy for them to understand each other, and other ones are completely at odds. They're like whoa, I don't get you. What happens when if you're in a situation where you don't get somebody else is that you start judging them and thinking that they're ., There's there's something wrong with them because they're not like me. Well, the Enneagram really sheds light on this. It helps you get that, oh, they're just a different Enneagram type than me. It helps you not take things personally. It helps you realize okay, they're not doing this to me, they're just behaving like a type five or a type six or a type seven. That's just their natural way of being. And so what I found is that when you understand what type you are on the Enneagram, you are able to work more effectively with others together. And you're able to work with lots of different kinds of people and just understand like wow, they're just different than me.
Margot Zaher:ery we look at this, then there's some big differences in the Enneagram world. For instance, there's a type five who prefers to be more introspective, who prefers to spend more time alone to research things, to analyze things. They prefer one-on-one interactions in conversations. That's really different than a type seven who likes larger amounts of people, likes to interact with tons of people, is very outgoing. When a type seven meets a type five, that type five can feel intimidated and uncomfortable, like whoa, this is a lot of energy coming my way, which can lead to misunderstandings, right? Or, thinking about it from the opposite side, that type seven might think, oh my gosh, this type five is maybe upset at me because they're not laughing at my jokes. They're not really interacting with me. What did I do wrong? Or hey, something is wrong with this person because they're kind of shut down. And they can create negative judgments about people because they are completely different than them. So it happens all the time that we have these misunderstandings because we're very different than other Enneagram types, right? So if we look at this. This is really an opportunity to better understand each other by knowing our types, and to create more harmony and connection, not just in your business, but also on the planet. And with regards relationships, ask yourself this question, "Who are the people that I feel like I really resonate with? And maybe make a list and get curious. Who are the people that I feel like I really resonate with, and maybe make a list and get curious. Who are they on the Enneagram? And then make a list of people who you may not resonate with, who trigger you in some way, and ask who are they on the Enneagram? It's really interesting to do this because you will see a pattern developing.
Margot Zaher:So why am I so Enneagram obsessed? You know again, I've really seen the impact of this in my life. As I said earlier in this podcast, I was introduced to the Enneagram in 2003. And it wasn't easy for me to really get what type I was. It took a bit of a journey and when I finally discovered I was a type six, I didn't really like hearing that. Honestly, I wanted to be any other type, but a type six. I didn't want to be the one that needed security, the one that was driven by fear. Who wants to be that?
Margot Zaher:However, as I really dived into it, I started understanding why I had been blocked as an entrepreneur and what was really stopping me, not just as an entrepreneur, but in my life and in my relationships with others. So one of the things I learned was how much self-doubt was playing a role and how often I was limiting my ability to be successful by doubting my decisions. So I would make a decision and then reverse the decision, or I would just keep flip-flopping back and forth. Yes, this is a great idea. No, that sucks. I'm not ever going to do that. And so I wasn't making any decisions out of fear of making the wrong decisions.
Margot Zaher:Many opportunities came and went, opportunities that could have elevated my business, but I couldn't decide if I wanted to do them. Is this really a good way to spend my money or not? Because of that, my business was actually stalled out for a while, because I wasn't taking new steps and new directions based on this fear of making the wrong decision. I was just too scared. That's a good example of how the Enneagram stopped me.
Margot Zaher:When I realized this, I got like, wow, that's what's stopping me. It's not that I'm lazy. It's not that I'm actually procrastinating. It's that I have a core self-doubt to really look at and work through. I got how I was sabotaging myself and how important it was for me to work through self-doubt and how it showed up for me as an entrepreneur. So I learned to face my fears. Yes, I did a lot of work on myself and I looked at those beliefs that were holding these fears in place and shifted those. What I did that was most impactful was I befriended fear. You know, fear had been kind of driving the car, so to speak, and I no longer wanted fear to be in the driver's seat of my entrepreneurial life. I was sick and tired of it. I learned how to shift out of some of these places and it wasn't easy.
Margot Zaher:And still fear comes up, still still issues around "Am I making the right decision? Comes up Yet now, instead of letting it hold me back and stop me in my tracks, I'm able to be like, okay, that's my friend, fear. Let's embrace this fear and let's make a decision that really resonates with my heart. I'm able to make decisions faster than I ever have been able to make them, and decisions that feel better for me and decisions I don't regret.
Margot Zaher:That's been one of the really big opportunities for me as an entrepreneur and why I feel the Enneagram is super helpful. It got me unstuck and I know that it can help other entrepreneurs get unstuck because I've seen it happen. That's why I'm so excited about this. I was able to get out of my comfort zone. You know, start doing things that I hadn't mastered yet. Face those fears, you know, lead different events. I ran a retreat for women even when I doubted my effectiveness as a retreat leader. I went out and did some summits, and did some public speaking engagements when I wasn't that prepared. All of this is a way of facing my fears as a six and allowing myself to keep progressing in the right direction. There's so many other ways that the Enneagram has impacted me in my life and I will definitely continue to share those as we do this podcast together.
Margot Zaher:But today I just wanted to highlight that knowing your Enneagram type can really help you just get unstuck and help you get a better idea of what's going on in your life as an entrepreneur, because it's not easy, you know. So I really, really appreciate you listening to this first podcast. I hope it was something that helped you gain a better knowledge of the Enneagram and inspired you to open the door and start exploring this on your own.
