Staff Episode 2: More Than a Job — A Calling
Now that you’ve got your contract, forms, and systems in motion, we want to talk about the bigger picture: Why working at Glow Church is more than just employment. Why this is more than a job — it’s a calling.
Welcome to Episode 2
This is where the real journey begins.
Now that you’ve got your contract, forms, and systems in motion, we want to talk about the bigger picture:
Why working at Glow Church is more than just employment.
Why this is more than a job — it’s a calling.
You’re Not Just on Payroll — You’re on Purpose.
Glow Church UK is a church, not a company.
We’re a registered charity, yes — but our mission is spiritual, our culture is Kingdom, and our staff are called, not just hired.
So while your job might include spreadsheets, staging, pastoral care, policy writing, or planning youth events — your role is ministry.
Not just function. Formation.
This means your heart posture matters as much as your performance.
At Glow, we hire for skill, but we also look for spirit — humility, teachability, flexibility, and faith.
Staff Roles in a Church — Dual Nature.
When you work in a church context, you're holding two things at once:
You're an employee.
You have a contract, working hours, policies, boundaries, and legal protections — and we honour all of that.
You're a culture carrier.
Your presence shapes the atmosphere.
Your tone sets the temperature.
Your words, your decisions, and your example form the future of this house.
That means you’re on the team, not just on the rota.
And every team member helps lead — not just the ones with microphones.
Staff Expectations — The Spiritual Kind.
So what kind of staff do we want at Glow?
We’re building a team of people who are:
Learners – Staff who ask questions, embrace feedback, and stay teachable
Servants – People who see a need and step in — even when it’s not in the job description.
Builders – Not just maintaining what’s there, but improving it.
Worshippers – Not just helping others experience God, but leading from your own walk with Him.
Representatives – In the car park, the WhatsApp chat, the team meeting, and the café queue.
And most importantly… Disciples.
Because staff should never be “above” the culture of spiritual growth.
You lead best when you're being led.
What This Means in Practice.
Here’s what that looks like, day-to-day:
You arrive early and carry presence on Sundays — even when you’re not rostered.
You’re generous — with time, attitude, and giving.
You serve beyond your hours when it counts — not out of pressure, but passion.
You speak well of the church — even when things are challenging.
You own your area — and ask how it serves the whole house
You’re not just filling a job — you’re helping build a church.
Let’s bring this back to Scripture.
Colossians 3:23 says:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters..."
That verse is our foundation.
Whether you’re planning worship, organising car parks, ordering catering, or replying to emails — you’re doing it for Jesus.
This is ministry — and it matters.
In the next episode, we’ll unpack the Big 7 — the seven key annual events where your presence as staff is more than expected… it’s essential. We’ll also talk about volunteering beyond paid hours and why this is part of how we model service in the house.
But for now — reflect on this:
Are you carrying this like a job… or like a calling?
Thanks for leaning in.
See you in Episode 3.
