From Abuse to Overcomer: Finding Your True Identity

Nicole Cater Season 1 Episode 15

Jacqueline Williams shares her powerful journey from abandonment and abuse to becoming an overcomer through finding her identity in Christ and learning to release her past to God.

• Growing up without parents—a mother who didn't want her and an abusive father
• Writing "Overcomer" through Holy Spirit inspiration after encouragement from her typing teacher
• Learning to bury the past and release painful memories to God completely
• Finding healing through periods of isolation with God where He "reprogrammed" her heart and mind
• Recognizing that many people today lack spiritual sight, focusing on the natural realm instead of seeing what God is doing
• Understanding that our identity in Christ gives us confidence and purpose
• Accessing the spiritual power God has already given us instead of remaining vulnerable to the enemy

We're going to have a great conversation today, as always, so I'm not going to hold up our time because I mean, you guys hear from me all the time. Let's dive into this conversation Today. I'm so excited as we have Ms Jacqueline Williams joining us today.

Speaker 1:

Jacqueline is a Watchman, Intercessor, podcast host and author. She is called to dedicate her life to God. She has been featured in Canvas Rebel Magazine. She is a woman who has overcome obstacles and hardships. She has not only survived, she became an overcomer. Living in Mississippi, she is a mother dreamer, a believer in the hope to rise up, to defeat life's challenges, not being a victim but to become victorious. She described herself as a charismatic person who has an outgoing, energetic and likable personality that seems to naturally draw other people to her. Jacqueline has a humble spirit with a great sense of humor. So help me welcome Jacqueline Williams, Hello.

Speaker 2:

Thank you for having me on this morning. I'm very grateful to be here.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely. It is my pleasure and I am just really excited for just good conversation. I feel like whenever we talk about the goodness of God, we can't go wrong. Right, Right, right, Absolutely. Well, I'm so intrigued to hear more about your story Before we do.

Speaker 2:

I understand that you recently released a book yes, it's Overcomer by Jacqueline Williams, and it's available on Amazon.

Speaker 1:

Oh okay. So all right, we're just going to dive right into it because I'm like Overcomer. There's already stories that mean are wept into that. So tell us about Overcomer, like what inspired you to write? Write it, where did this come from?

Speaker 2:

well, I, um, I had no attentionally uh, of an idea of right, even writing a book. What came about is my typing teacher. Um, god had brought her back into my life for, you know, only a season. And so she called me one day and she said you know, jackie, you ought to put your life story in a book. And I was like me, I'm like that was way out of my head, but I didn't tell her that I just said, yes, ma'am.

Speaker 2:

and so when I got off the phone with her after that, all I was hearing in my spirit was write a book, write a book, book, write a book. And I'm like God, I don't know how to write a book, but I had to finally change my mindset and my words, because our words, you know, speak either life or death. So I had to grab a scripture from his words saying I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me. So, uh, god, after I said that, god and the Holy Ghost came in and helped me, you know, to put this book together. He would give me, you know, even at night time, he would give me things to put in the book and he would give me information you know that I could get that's available on the Internet about the drug and everything, oh, and everything to put in everything.

Speaker 1:

He just put it together and helped me format so tell me, like, as the holy spirit inspired this, and help you put together this format for this book, what can people kind of expect in hearing from your story I mean without moving us to all the details, of course, like I'm interested in overcomer, like what type of things can they expect?

Speaker 2:

one thing, a couple things they can expect. One thing is when they read the book, they will see, uh, how god displayed his power in my life when the enemy tried to take my life, how god prevailed over him, uh and uh protected me through all the obstacles and challenges that I went through in my life. So they will absolutely see that, and also they will. They will see that, you know, it wasn't me in my own strength that overcame these obstacles and challenges, but it was, uh, god's strength that gave that gave me strength. I went through and and was overcome because of his strength and not my own strength.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yes, I love that absolutely. I mean, I think so many times, like we know that just in our human nature, right, we see something and we're like, oh, I could do this. So we try and do it on our own. And I'm often reminded how the scripture says to pray about all things right, take all things to him, so that, truly, like, the Holy Spirit can lead us, to guide us, give us direction, and that we can have the strength of the Lord behind us. I mean, we know the joy of the Lord is our strength, and so I love that aspect because I too, y'all you guys know I'm very real and transparent with you.

Speaker 1:

There are so many times where this young lady thinks that she's in control and I'm still learning. You would think I had learned the lesson, but I have not. Y'all I still find myself saying, oh yeah, I'm not in control. Did I go before the father? Did I bring him into the circumstance? Am I leaning on his strength and not my own? And so I love how they can get that from your book, just the inspiration of how, when the Lord carries us through. So I'm imagining, like when you write a book. I know many times when I am writing a piece. In my aspect of writing, I'm already considering the reader and I have a certain way that I want them to experience the book or come into the book. And so let me just ask you, like, what do you want people to experience when they're reading your book?

Speaker 2:

I want them to experience that they can overcome, they can be their overcomer, and and and not to fear, you know, because that's what the enemy brings in fear. But God said he will always be with us, no matter what we go through, no matter what we face.

Speaker 1:

And I want them to experience to, to lean in in his peace and his rest and his strength and allow him to lead and and and take over their life, to bring order in their life, that they can be their overcomer I mean just thinking that alone, like when I think about fear, um, the first thing that comes to mind is just perfect love, cast out fear and we allow God to love us first and we don't seek for validation in other spaces that we can have that fear be cast out because we're driving from a place of his love. Uh, how? And as I'm thinking of that, I'm just curious, like how have you experienced his love that carried you through and casting out that fear through your experience?

Speaker 2:

well, I grew up without my parents and when I say without my parents, I grew up without them in my life so because my mom, she didn't want me, and my dad, he took me in but he was very abusive. So I I had to grow up in in my immediate family, you know, like my aunties and uncles. I never had them in my life. So I had to really grow up really fast, oh, as far as that is concerned, and I wanted to experience that love, you know. So I began to, with all the hurt and the abuse and all the hospital things I went through concerning my health. I had to come to the crossroad to make the decision that I had to bury my past. I had to have a frown, so to speak, with my past and I was so hurt that I said I was going to block all of this out. And just, I had bleeding wounds and a hurt heart that I said I'm just going to put a bandage on it and so to speak, and just jump into these relationships thinking it was going to be better, it's going to heal and everything. But it got worse because all of the abuse patterns fell into those relationships. You know, guys, that I dated. They would abuse me, if not physically, mentally and you know people that said they was my friends. You know they took advantage of me or manipulation or rejection.

Speaker 2:

I went through all of that but the case was that I didn't blame them. What I did I told God. I said God, I don't blame anybody, I'm not pointing a finger. Deliver me, lord. You know I need inner healing. You know, sometimes you know God will remove you from the situation, he'll remove you from the people and he'll remove you from yourself. But you still have those injuries. After he delivered me from the situation and the people, I still had the injury. I survived it, but I was still hurt and I needed him to deliver me and to heal me. That internal healing heal those wounds, heal the heart, change me. Just make I told him, just do a whole new makeover in me. You know, make me brand new.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you know I think about you know in Philippians. Yes, you know I think about you know, philippians. I mean, I remember this scripture from a child and almost holding on to it, not even recognizing what I was holding on to, but where Philippians 3, I believe it's 14, says forgetting all those things behind me and pressing forward towards the mark. And so I think about how even our brains, how our body works. We have these implicit memories that we don't even consciously always remember. But the way, the beautiful way God actually designed our bodies is that they hold on to these memories and that often, if we don't take time to sit with the Lord, ask him you know when we're responding to things hey, where is this coming from?

Speaker 1:

Why am I feeling bitter about this? Why am I feeling jealous? Why am I feeling hurt about this? Lord, show me where this is coming from and then help me walk through healing in it. Right? You know I am a firm believer that therapy and theology go hand in hand. Our listeners know this. I believe that there is no coincidence in how God shaped our physical body, our mental aspect, our emotional aspect and our spiritual. There's a reason why there is all four components, and so I'm curious to ask you throughout your healing process, what resources, what tools did you find yourself uh, I want to say tapping into, in addition to, of course, sitting with the lord and letting him lead the way for your healing?

Speaker 2:

well, after he um, there came, there was in my life and it still is a lot of isolation. I had a whole lot of isolation and during those times of isolation it was just me and the Lord. He just wanted me and him so he could take out things out of us. It's almost like a computer. Sometimes you have to reprogram the computer. So God has to reprogram us a whole lot. He has to tune us up. He has to reset us. He has to tune us up. He has to reset us.

Speaker 1:

So that was mostly my time alone, in isolation with him, allowing him to just reprogram me. Yes, yes, I love that. I love it, if you look at our society today and Lord knows we have a lot going on. But if we look at society today, if you had to just pinpoint, like, what would you say is one of your biggest, what are the biggest challenges you see amongst society?

Speaker 2:

The biggest challenge I see is not people, not, their eyes are not open. That not. The eyes are not open spiritually. That's what I'm saying here. They're more focused on the natural, this natural realm here. And when we are so focused on the natural realm, then we can't see what God is doing, because he says in his word, in Isaiah 43 and 19, that he's doing a new thing. And if you don't see the new thing God is doing, then you're going to be left behind doing the same old things that you did 20 years ago. You're going to still be in your own way, as you were 20 or 10 years ago. When god is doing something else, he's doing something new within us and he's doing something else within this earth and in this nation yes, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

You know, it makes me, uh, think about the scripture in Colossians, and Lord knows our listeners, though I probably say it every episode like y'all, I will start quoting scripture and I have to be like, wait, wait, wait, let me give you the location. So Colossians 3 and 1, if, then, you've been raised to Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. And so, even when I just think about that scripture, I mean we have direct instruction to seek the things that are above, seek those heavenly things, look at things from a spiritual eye, look at the aspect of what's happening in the spirit realm, because we know that what's happening in the spirit is what we're seeing here, right? I always say, you know, we know scripture says that we don't fight flesh and blood, right, but it's spiritual warfare. And so when we try and do this thing called life here on earth, here in this world, and not doing the spirit thing, we're actually doing second things first versus first things first. And so, you know, when I think about Paul's writing in Colossians, when he wrote that he tells us to see things above, meaning pursue those things, and I'm going to break it down for our listeners, like pursue those things that are spiritual growth, those virtues, those values that align with God's kingdom. This, you know, when we talk about Christ's teachings, the humility, the love, the righteousness, like when we look at the things happening amongst the world today, we can find where there's a lack of spiritual focus, where there's not a heavenly perspective, where we're focused more on the flesh. Which description did tell us that this is where things will go right, where men become lovers of themselves.

Speaker 1:

And so, as we have listeners and viewers here, I would implore you to really dive into that and evaluate, like, do you run to the spirit realm first or do you sit with what you see? We know that we're to look at the things that we don't see right, the unseeing things. And even as a mom and I'm sure you know you can relate like there were times that things are happening with my children and I'm looking at it physically, but I know I'm like this is a spiritual thing. I need to go to war in the spirit for my kid, I need to be interceding, I need to cast off anything that's trying to attack them. I need to pull my scriptures out and remind the enemy of the God that I serve and who my child is, and so it's a spiritual thing and I absolutely agree, Like that's one of the things that I think, even from just the.

Speaker 1:

I mean of the things that I think, even from just the. I mean, yeah, I date myself, so 40 years old, I think even what was happening even in churches 30 years ago yes, that church was perfect. There was many things that maybe were lacking. We wasn't talking about emotional health, we wasn't talking about mental health, but I will say we were up at 6 am for intercessory prayer, we were doing overnight watch services and praying and worrying, and so that is a perspective that is missing in the sense, I would think, of our world. We're so microwave sense now right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and technology.

Speaker 1:

Oh yes. Absolutely, absolutely. I say all the time like I have this love-hate relationship. You know, with technology it has its good purposes, but yet it can pull you in so easily, right?

Speaker 3:

Hey, let's take a quick break. Consider this paradox. We live in an age of medical breakthroughs. Advanced treatments, therapies, drugs and technologies improve the science of medicine every year. However, the prevalence of heart disease is up nearly 10% since 1999. The prevalence of cancer is up nearly 20% since 1999. And diabetes up 35% since 1999, is a gateway to other diseases. Unless we reverse this trend, experts predict that, for the first time in history, one in three children born today may live shorter lives than their parents.

Speaker 3:

So why aren't we healthier? It's largely because we're overfed and undernourished. Take a few seconds to think about it. We often choose convenience over our health. Fast food sales have increased 2,000% since 1981. Eating fast food more than twice a week is associated with an increased risk for diabetes. Even so-called healthy foods are full of artificial ingredients and fat. Only two percent of us get our daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, and studies show that produce is not as nutritious as it used to be. Poor nutritional habits are becoming a national epidemic. But you are in control. Countless studies show that nutritional supplementation can positively affect your health. With proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, 80% of all heart disease in women is preventable. 60% of all cancer-related deaths could be prevented. 90% of all type 2 diabetes is preventable. Proper nutrition and supplementation are critical. Give your body the nutrients it needs. Invest in your health today.

Speaker 1:

When you think about how you had to forget those things that were behind you right, and really like bury the past. How would you suggest someone who is looking to say, like I have a past that I'm trying to leave behind, I'm trying to bury it, like? What tips would you give them?

Speaker 2:

I would tell them to give it to God. And when I say give it to God, and when I say give it to God because I used to go, I went when I was in my situation I went to people that were spiritual and I asked them and I talked about it to them and they said give it to God. And I was like, well, how do you give this to God? And a lot of people don't know how to give it to God. And I was like, well, how do you give this to God? And a lot of people don't know how to give it to God. And and one of the ways is to give it to God you begin to let it go and say, god, I give it to you. I can't handle this situation, I can't fix it, I can't do anything about it or with it. So I put it in your hand.

Speaker 2:

And when you put it in his hand see, sometimes we so easily put it in his hands and then we take it back. You know it's just a back and forth. You know going on a tug of war here with that. But once you release it, see, if you keep holding on to it, then it's saying that you don't trust God. You know, and when you keep holding on to it, it's bringing more anxiety into you. It's bringing all those things you know that's not of God in you. You know anger, whatever the case is hurt, you know it's hurting you more as far as holding it when you and you can't do anything with it. But when you release it, you know you feel that burden lift up off of you and you become lighter. So you have to have, so you have to have, you have to keep a relationship and and and and stay in communication with God and and just talk to him. I talk to him just like I'm talking to you. I just talk to him. He just wants us to talk to him. He's our father.

Speaker 1:

Yes, he wants us to come to him about anything, even though he already know yes, I mean, I just think about relationships, right, like I don't necessarily just get up in the morning and say, okay, I'm gonna talk to my kid for 15 minutes and then I'm not gonna speak to you again until I lay down at night and say good night to you. Like, no, we are consistently communicating. When things are happening throughout the day, I'm like, hey, guys, guess what, when I'm even having challenges, I think about my husband and I, right, like, I will have that conversation of like, hey, can I talk to you? Hey, this is what's going on, even if it's just me offloading right, just me offloading right, which, if I'm offloading, you have to offload, right, you know. I think of when we, if someone comes and says, you know, or we decide to give right, there's been times where I've decided to give financial funds. Once you release it, I can't be in control of like, okay, I released this to you, but listen, I want you to spend $5 here and do $10 here and do this dollars here. No, if I am giving it to them, I am releasing it, and I'm releasing that aspect that I can still control that dollar that I gave. And in that sense, we have to learn to release things to God and not to try and step back into control, because essentially it's very much like you said of it's a saying we don't trust that you can do this as good as we can, when the reality is, lord knows that he can do it way better. I think about the song like Frank Forrest has, your way is better. So so, so true.

Speaker 1:

And, as I stated from the very beginning, not knowing we're going to touch this, that is a thing that I, even daily, have to make a choice and remind myself. God, you are in control, I give this to you, I am your vessel. I don't want to carry this burden because it wasn't meant for me to carry, and so let me release it to you and trust that easiest thing or it should be the easiest things to do. But that's why the Bible tells us to renew our minds Right. That's why we're told to cast those imaginative thoughts down, because the enemy will love, like once we give it away, to try and come back in. That's a method that he uses to come back in and say, oh, this is not being handled right, or oh, you need to step back into this. You gave it away, you forgave somebody, and then they come back in the picture. Oh, that's, you shouldn't have forgave. You need to take this back on versus what you already released to the Lord.

Speaker 1:

And so I just want to encourage our listeners, as we even discussed this, like, consider the things. Like I sit with the Lord daily and say, hey, like David said, create in me a clean heart, a renewed mind. Like, what do I need to release to you, lord? That's not meant for me to hold on to, because, to your like, it affects us. Like you said, anxiety, I mean, it affects us health-wise, right, our, our bodies respond to the very thing that's inside of us.

Speaker 1:

Um, I'm looking at the time. As always, I'm like gosh, we just get to talking and the time gets to fly. Um, I say it, our listeners are probably like Nicole, you say that every episode. But truly, y'all, I'm trying to tell you like the time gets fine when we're just talking about what God's done for us and in our lives. And so, before we go, before we close out, you know, jacqueline, I want to ask you how would you say you know the value of your words? And to our listeners that maybe are struggling with self-worth or identity, like, how would you say that you learned the value of your words.

Speaker 2:

I had an identity crisis as I was going through my journey of all that of my past and I had to come to know who I was and who I belonged to. So I had to know my identity in Christ. And there's so many people out there that don't know their true identity. They don't know their true purpose, they don't know their true call, they don't know their true uh worth in in themselves, and and, and I had to find that, and and God brought me to this lady that was online and she became my spiritual mother and God.

Speaker 2:

The gifts that she had because everybody has a key to somebody's deliverance and she had the key to my deliverance and she helped me, through the gifts that God given her, to find my true identity in him. And once we find our true identity, then we have the confidence in ourselves and in him, knowing that he loves us and that he and we are a true as the Bible says, we are a royal priesthood. And see, you have to get scriptures that pertains to your situation and you have to get it in you so, when the enemy comes at you, you won't fall completely to be destroyed. You can get back up.

Speaker 2:

You won't be destroyed if you don't fall completely to be destroyed, you can get back up, you won't be destroyed If you don't have the word of God in you and then if you don't know the power that lies within you. There's so many people that it's not you and even the church. They're not using the power. I went through a situation one time and God said well, you got the power, I gave it to you. What you going to do with it? It's time to use the power and if we sit on the power, that gives the enemy to come in and just knock us any kind of way. If you're not fighting back with the power, he can just do anything he wants with you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yes, that's so true. So, so, so true. I mean, as you were talking about power, I'm thinking about even how the it was so important to have the Holy Spirit power that Jesus, when he ascended, he gave them instructions to wait. Don't just go do what I instructed you to do, don't just go start spreading the gospel, wait until the Holy Spirit falls upon you. And so that's just how important it was. These are the people that walked side by side with Jesus and were given instruction to wait until that Holy Spirit, our fellow Barnum. And so I absolutely understand and agree where you're saying we sometimes, again in our humanity, think that we have the answers, think that we can intellectually just figure this thing out right. Even in churches sometimes it can become so program oriented, so intellectually driven, that we forget that this drive should be Holy Spirit inspired, holy Spirit power ignited right and in our lives. Absolutely, that is where the power that we draw from, right as we talk about identity in Christ.

Speaker 1:

Again, I'm always mindful of our listeners. We don't know who may be on here and if you are a Gracefield Community listener and you haven't had a chance to connect with me, I am a very relational person and so I would love. I invite you to just shoot an email to grow at gracefield communitycom, but I do want to give you some key points on identity, because invite you to just shoot an email to grow at gracefieldcommunitycom, but I do want to give you some key points on identity, because if you're listening and you're like, hey, identity is something that I'm struggling with. Number one if you have the scripture says that if you believe in your heart and you confess with your mouth Jesus Christ is Lord and savior and he died and rose up on the third day, that you can and will be saved. And so number one is, if you're a child of God, you are a believer adopted into God's family. So I would encourage you to look at John 1 and 12, but all who received him, who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. Second thing of your identity is that you're a new creation. We're putting those things behind us In Christ. 2 Corinthians 5, 17,. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come.

Speaker 1:

Third thing I want to tell you is that you are chosen and loved Ephesians 1 and 4, for he chose us. When I say us, that's you and me. He chose us Knowing all I always like to say, knowing all the dirt, all the times. I'll betray him, all the times that I would not be obedient to him. He didn't choose me because of my works. He chose me before I was ever even formed. And he chose you and he loves you.

Speaker 1:

Number four you are forgiven and you are redeemed. Don't let anyone tell you different. If you are in Christ, you are forgiven. Ephesians 1 and 7 says in him we have redemption through his blood. Y'all who gave up his blood for you, the forgiveness of sins in accordance to the riches of God's grace. And the last thing is secure and victorious.

Speaker 1:

As we're talking about overcomer y'all Romans 8 and 37, know in all these things we are more than conquerors.

Speaker 1:

Through him who loved us, your identity y'all is secure. You have victory over sin and death. Know whose you are and you're a child of God. So I encourage you, if you are listening to this and you're like, hey, identity is, yes, a thing. Overcoming is, yes, something that I need. Plug into those scriptures I know I kind of rolled through them Y'all rewind, press that 10-second button, go back, write it down. Do press that 10 second button, go back, write it down, do what you need to do to see what the Lord says about you. You are written all throughout that book because he loved you and he had you in mind from the very beginning. Jacqueline, I want to thank you so much for coming on and just sharing more about your own story, sharing some insights on overcoming and just healing with the Lord. Before I let you go, I want to be mindful, too, for our listeners. Where can they stay connected to you? Where can we get your book? Speaker 1:

Graceville Community is all about doing church the way Church of Acts did, using five main principles that we see in the book of Acts Sharing resources, as believers pooled their possessions and resources to support those in need, as we see in Acts 2.44. Through hospitality the early Christians practice hospitality by opening their homes to others, as we see in Acts 2 and 46. By financial aid the church in Antioch sent financial aid to believers in Judea during a time of famine, as described in Acts 11 and 29. Prayer and encouragement they supported each other through prayer and encouragement, as we see in Acts 4 and 24. And finally, spiritual guidance the apostles and elders provided spiritual guidance and teaching to help strengthen and build the community, as we see in Acts 15 30. I would like to encourage you. If any of those areas are areas in which you are in need or can contribute, please reach out to Graceville Community. We are working together across the world with ministries and individuals alike to help bring back the Church of Acts.
