00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:09.439 This generation, and I believe our generation too, has you know, we we grew up in this in this generation of the internet and of social media, and um, you know, it's hard for us to not see everyone's highlight reels. 00:08:10.560 --> 00:08:23.920 We compare jobs, relationships, followers, we compare salaries, bodies, ministries, even callings, and even platforms. 00:08:25.120 --> 00:08:27.040 And here's the crazy part. 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:29.360 I don't think we even realize it anymore. 00:08:29.439 --> 00:08:34.399 Again, it's become a habit of us comparing, it's become normal. 00:08:34.639 --> 00:08:39.679 We're constantly asking questions to ourselves Am I successful enough? 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:51.759 Do I matter? 00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:56.720 And maybe you've never said those words out loud, but you felt them. 00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:02.720 Because underneath all of those questions is an even deeper question. 00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:04.320 Am I enough? 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:07.840 And here's what I've learned. 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:13.679 The louder the world tells us to build ourselves, the emptier many of us become. 00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:20.480 Because no amount of attention can satisfy what only Jesus was designed to fulfill. 00:09:22.639 --> 00:09:24.000 And here's what's interesting. 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:30.720 Jesus himself, in his 33 years, never woke up wondering if he was enough. 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:40.159 He never chased validation, he never competed for influence, and he never compared himself to anyone. 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:42.399 Why, you might ask? 00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:48.240 Because he already knew exactly who he was and what his purpose was. 00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:53.519 He didn't have to prove himself because he knew his identity. 00:09:54.960 --> 00:09:59.759 And see, when you are in Christ, you stop living for the applause of people. 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:08.559 And as we heard and read in Philippians 2, it paints a beautiful picture of who Jesus is. 00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:19.600 And that's what we'll discuss tonight of how the Bible and Christianity teaches us the complete opposite of what culture teaches us. 00:10:20.399 --> 00:10:25.600 Because the world tells us to climb higher, but Jesus says serve lower. 00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:32.240 The world says, make a name for yourself, but Jesus says, die to yourself. 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:36.559 The world says, get everyone to notice you. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:39.600 But Jesus says, make much of me. 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:50.159 And one thing I want to talk about, and when I was studying this, it was it was amazing to me because I had never thought about this in this light. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:55.039 Pride makes me the center of everything. 00:10:55.360 --> 00:10:59.759 And so before we talk about humility, we have to talk about pride. 00:11:00.559 --> 00:11:06.480 Because you'll never appreciate humility until you understand the danger of pride. 00:11:07.440 --> 00:11:13.360 Most of us hear the word pride and we immediately think of the guy next to you, right? 00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:20.159 Or that other guy, the loud guy, the pert, the arrogant person, the narcissist, maybe. 00:11:20.559 --> 00:11:23.759 The person who thinks they're better than everyone else. 00:11:24.480 --> 00:11:26.960 Well, pride is much sneakier than that. 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:29.919 Pride doesn't wear a crown. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:33.600 Sometimes it wears insecurity. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:37.679 Sometimes pride says, I'm amazing. 00:11:37.840 --> 00:11:38.879 Look at me. 00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:43.600 Other times pride says and whispers, I'm terrible. 00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:45.120 I'm nothing. 00:11:45.840 --> 00:11:54.559 But the thing is, both pride and humility, or both say, I'm still focused on me. 00:11:55.519 --> 00:11:56.559 So let's think about that. 00:11:56.720 --> 00:11:59.120 Arrogance says, look how great I am. 00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:02.480 But insecurity says, look how terrible I am. 00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:06.559 Again, both conversations have the same thing in common. 00:12:06.799 --> 00:12:09.759 It's you, it's me, it's us. 00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:14.399 Pride is simply being consumed with yourself. 00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:16.639 Did you catch that? 00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:21.759 Pride is simply being consumed with yourself. 00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:32.639 So when you are insecure, when you play the victim mentality, what you're truly doing is making it about you. 00:12:33.039 --> 00:12:35.519 I love this quote that I read from C.S. 00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:38.720 Lewis, and it has challenged me over the years. 00:12:38.960 --> 00:12:44.879 He said, humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:49.200 And to me, that was so freeing. 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:51.200 It put things into perspective. 00:12:51.440 --> 00:12:56.879 And again, when I read, when I was thinking about pride, I have dealt with pride before. 00:12:57.039 --> 00:13:02.399 And when I was thinking about humility, I was like, man, I didn't even know that pride could go both ways, right? 00:13:02.480 --> 00:13:08.159 That you can think of yourself as, oh, I'm the best guy ever or the best lady ever, whatever it is. 00:13:08.399 --> 00:13:10.480 Or you can think, oh, I'm terrible. 00:13:10.639 --> 00:13:12.799 And it's the same thing. 00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:18.080 Because humility doesn't mean you're pretending to have no gifts. 00:13:18.559 --> 00:13:20.879 It doesn't mean putting yourself down. 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:24.320 It doesn't mean walking around acting like you're worthless. 00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:26.639 That's not biblical humility. 00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:33.519 Biblical humility is having such a confidence in Christ that you don't have to constantly think about yourself. 00:13:35.279 --> 00:13:43.519 As we're reading in Philippians 2 3, Paul told us, do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:49.519 Notice he didn't say some things, he said nothing. 00:13:50.399 --> 00:13:52.720 And that's a pretty high standard, right? 00:18:41.920 --> 00:18:49.039 And Paul doesn't leave us guessing, he simply defines humility as Jesus. 00:18:49.359 --> 00:18:54.400 And we can see that Jesus truly redefined greatness. 00:18:55.759 --> 00:19:00.640 But if we're being honest, let's let's really look into what humility looks like, right?
