2 Corinthians 4 Discussion

The line “the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers” can feel intense until you’ve watched it play out in real life. We’ve all seen it: someone you love can’t see the beauty of Jesus, and no amount of clever arguments seems to move the needle. So we open 2 Corinthians 4 and slow down, because Paul doesn’t just diagnose the problem, he points to the only cure.
We talk about spiritual warfare and spiritual blindness, why the Bible can call Satan “the god of this world,” and how God’s mercy still rules the story. Then we lean into one of the most encouraging images in all of Scripture: we are treasure in jars of clay. You’ll hear us connect Christian weakness, suffering, and perseverance to God’s surpassing power, along with the gritty promise that you can be afflicted, perplexed, and struck down without being destroyed.
From there, 2 Corinthians 4 gives a steady rhythm for the Christian life: the outer self wasting away, the inner self being renewed day by day; momentary affliction being turned into eternal glory; a stubborn refusal to quit. We also get painfully practical about integrity in Bible teaching and personal discipleship: renounce underhanded ways, refuse to tamper with God’s word, and bring your whole life under Scripture’s authority even when it costs you.
If you need Christian encouragement, a clearer view of the gospel of Jesus Christ, or a Bible study that helps you hold on when life presses hard, this conversation is for you. Subscribe for more, share this with a friend who’s tired, and leave a review with the phrase you’re clinging to right now.

Who Is The God Of This World
Pastor PlekAnd welcome back to a chapter a day. Keeps the devil away. I'm Pastor Pleck. That's Pastor Holland. We're talking 2 Corinthians chapter 4. We're gonna outline it, observe it, interpret it, and apply it so that you can be fully immersed in God's word today. All right, so 2 Corinthians 4, 1 and 2 starts out with Paul's ministry is sincere, it's bold, it's merciful, and he challenges everyone. Hey, we don't lose heart. And then verses 3 and 4, listen, the gospel available. It's it's people are blinded by the God of this age. And then verses 5 and 6, listen, we proclaim Christ, not ourselves, so that God's light or God shines light in their hearts. And then uh verses 7 through 12, we got the power in weakness. We are treasure in jars of clay. And then uh verses 13 through 18, uh, this faith, this proclamation, just have this ultimate eternal perspective of not losing heart. And then he wraps it up and to say we're gonna focus on the unseen eternal things, not on what is seen and temporary. All right, what you got? Observation.
Pastor HollandOkay, the God of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. Who is the God of this world? I thought there was only one God. Oh what's going on, Pastor Pleck?
Pastor PlekAll right, so I think that's gonna be representative of the Elohim who rebelled from God and is now demonic power, aka Satan and his minions, the God of this world who's got everyone's eyes veiled and hardened hearts.
Pastor HollandSo why is it called a God when he's the devil?
Pastor PlekHe is the devil, but he was a part of the Elohim, which is all aka the gods who had dominion and authority over the earth as part of God's shared rule and reign in heaven. That's how I see that.
Pastor HollandHow about you? Yeah, and so the the God of this world is a rebellious spiritual being that we identify as Satan or the devil, um, who rebelled against God and is now um uh because of God's mercy, God didn't wipe out um the rebellious spiritual beings, the the demons, um, the the satanic forces. Um God didn't wipe them out, but allows them to still be on the earth and have influence and even to blind people's minds. Um and yet God's purposes will not be thwarted. Would you say that's mercy for them or mercy?
Pastor PlekWho's the mercy for?
Pastor HollandYou said like they have mercy on Well, like I mean, he didn't just immediately utterly annihilate them, right?
Pastor PlekI think that would be more merciful. But yeah You think so? But maybe they're I don't know.
Pastor HollandI see it as like um he is you know, they're awaiting final judgment. What we read in Revelation is that Satan and his devils, you know, they're gonna be thrown into the lake of fire. And so like the fullness of God's judgment against them is coming in the future.
Pastor PlekYeah, I guess why I bring that. I've heard non-existence is worse than hellish existence.
Jars Of Clay And God’s Power
Pastor HollandHmm. Okay. Yeah. Well, I mean, they still he still gets to be a god of this world. Yeah, he gets to live in this world, in a sense, with real power and influence. And he doesn't get prowling at first Peter says prowling around like a roaring lion. Um seeking those whom he may destroy. He's lying, he's deceiving, uh, he's blinding the minds of unbelievers. And yet um God is still winning. And so it's it's also like it's a mercy, but it's also to Satan's like shame. It's like you're on the you're a forever bad guy. Yeah, and God's going at whatever you you know, the worst that you can throw at um the church, I'm gonna beat you, I'm gonna be victorious. The church is gonna grow, the gates of hell will not stand against um the church. Right. So pretty awesome. Yeah. Uh kind of wild. Uh but also just real to understand there's a real enemy, a real spiritual being who wants to who is blinding people's minds. And so we have to pray. With this to me, it gets to the spiritual reality of the Christian life. And it's not just information and teaching. Right. Yeah.
Pastor PlekThere's someone actively fighting against you, and we are considered jars of clay, which seems to me like hold holding priceless treasures. Now, jars of clay, although it protects the priceless treasure on the inside, sort of, but it's not like invincible. Like jars of clay are breakable. Very breakable. And and so um it's like we're going up against the God of this world, but just being like, I'm a jar. Yeah. You have to depend on God's.
Pastor HollandIt's not that we're stronger than Satan, it's that God's stronger than Satan and He dwells in us and works through us. Yeah.
Light Of Christ In Dark Hearts
Pastor PlekSo I feel like Jesus ultimately becomes a central focus of this proclamation, not Paul's own self. His death, resurrection provide the pattern and the power for believers. Uh, and the glory is revealed in his face. Look at that. Hold on. Yeah. Yeah. For God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Pastor HollandSo that's how a person is saved is we're blinded by the God of this world, and yet God will shine the light of the knowledge of his glory in the face of Jesus Christ through the proclamation of the gospel.
Afflicted Not Crushed And A Song
Pastor PlekLight. I love it. Okay. Um, I do love uh we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed, perplexed, but not driven to despair, persecuted, not forsaken, struck, struck down, but not destroyed. Like this reminds me of I'm trading my sorrows, uh, old school song from like the 80s or 90s.
SPEAKER_01And so how does that song go? I'm trading my sorrow. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm trading my shirk. Lay them down, I'm laying them down. For the joy of the Lord, I am pressed but not crushed, persecuted, not abandoned. I've been struck down but not destroyed. I am blessed beyond the curse, for his promise will endure, and his joy is gonna be my stray. The sorrow may last for the night. His joy come with the morning.
Renewed Day By Day
Pastor HollandYeah, yeah. I knew that you couldn't resist, and I just felt like the people deserve a treat. And so I had to ask. That's one of my favorite all-time songs. Okay. Uh, what else do you observe? Um that's the main thing to observe right there. People got their money's worth today.
Pastor PlekHow about there's not a loss of heart? Like, even though you're getting old and even though you're wasting away, the inner self is being renewed day by day. How is how is how are you being renewed? God's word, affliction is preparing for you something even better. So the when you take God's word, you take the affliction, you put your hope in him in spite of affliction, you're growing more and more and more. Um you're gaining more glory in a sense, yeah, to be given to him.
Pastor HollandYeah. I love that. Um, and then he says in verse 15, I just love this, it's all for your sake. Like we're doing all that. Paul's life was not about how can I get the most from me, right? It was all about how can I pour myself out for other people. And I just love that.
Pastor PlekOh, that's really good. Um, all right, let's get into some nature of man. Uh, how about people without Christ are spiritually blind and perishing? They can't see the gospel glory due to satanic deception. Yep. Like there is a real demon out there who is a god of this world. That's wild.
Pastor HollandYeah. Um I love that uh when he says our outer self is wasting away, um, but our inner self is being renewed day by day. It's so encouraging that, like, the older you get, even as your body is breaking down, your soul can continue thriving and growing and you know, being nourished and flourishing spiritually, even as your body breaks down, um, your soul doesn't have to break down. Yeah, it's good.
Pastor PlekUm, yeah, I think people are jars of clay, they're frail and vulnerable. Um, and you're gonna experience being hard-pressed, you're gonna experience being perplexed, you're being experienced being per persecuted or struck down. That's part of being human.
Pastor HollandYeah, and if Christ is in you, none of that has to destroy you. Boom.
What God Is Like In Affliction
Pastor PlekUm yeah. All right, how about some character of God? What do you got? God is how about he's merciful?
Pastor HollandHe shines light into that's what I was gonna say. He opens the eyes of the blind. And he's doing this. Wait, is that how does that one go?
Pastor PlekNo, I I'm not that's uh not quite as awesome of a song, but it's still good.
Pastor HollandUm Yeah, he's merciful, he opens blind eyes and um reveals himself to people who are deceived by Satan. Um he's a merciful, powerful God, mighty to save. My God is mighty to save.
Application: Speak And Don’t Quit
Pastor PlekOkay, uh, so God have I had to be. I'm just gonna keep tempting you by saying lines. It's really hard for me. I'm a singer at heart, and I wish I could sing. All right, so God has surpassing power and it works through our human weakness. So all the weakness that we do have, he likes to work through it. Um, so that reveals the glory belongs to him, not to us. And that and also that in affliction, he's the one sustaining us because there's no possible way a little jar of clay could manage against and that's just like the amazing grace of God, wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is amazing grace. Yeah, it is. All right. Um how about a simple one? Uh, God raises the dead. Mm-hmm. Yeah, and he's gonna raise all believers. He turns momentary affliction into eternal glory. All right, how about some application?
Pastor HollandOkay, we do not lose heart.
Pastor PlekThat's why we sing songs.
Pastor HollandThat is right there. Right? We do not lose heart.
Pastor PlekRemind yourselves of the truth of who God is and how your victory is in Jesus.
Pastor HollandVictory in Jesus. Yeah, you got me on that one. Okay. Um, we do not lose heart. I love this is like this is the this is Christianity. We don't do it. We don't give up. No, but we are not quitters.
Pastor PlekWe are not quitters. Uh how about promise to claim? Oh, wait, I forgot to tell you it's send to avoid or confess. Promise claim, example to follow, command, obey, knowledge to believe. Uh, promise claim uh that you could trust God's mercy and his ministry will sustain you even when through affliction.
Pastor HollandAmen.
Pastor PlekUm how about example of follow-up? Paul, just his sincere boldness in proclaiming the gospel of truth openly, and then his humility in preaching Christ, even when the people he leads to Christ would critique him, reject him, and he considered himself a servant of those people, even though he's got way more education, way more life experience, way more everything. He's there to help them grow.
Pastor HollandYeah. Uh, I also love when he says verse 13, I believed and so I spoke. We also believe and so we speak. Nice. Example to follow. If you're a believer, speak about Jesus. Nice. Tell other people about him. God uses it to open blind eyes and save sinners. How about this? Command obey. Do not lose heart. Yes, that is the one that I said first, but you should say it again because it says it twice in this chapter. It does. Verse 1 and verse 16. 16. There you go.
Pastor PlekYou're looking at verse one. I'm more of a 16 guy. There you go. Uh, and so I want to make sure that I got said twice. Um, all right, anything else?
Final Charge And Goodbye
Pastor HollandUm the verse two, we've renounced disgraceful underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or tamper with God's word. I feel like that one too, just an example to follow of like Don't tamper God's word. Don't twist it, don't manipulate it, don't try to make it fit your, you know, the positions you already held. Rather, bring all of your beliefs, positions, everything, everything in your life under the authority of God's word. And it might cost you. That's hard. But it is always worth it. And that's why we do not lose heart. That'll be my final application. Don't lose heart.
Pastor PlekHey, thanks so much for joining us. We'll see you next time on a chapter a day.
